Just installed atk pro...questions - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so i have no idea what's safe to kill and what's not.. Security level is set to low... A bunch of things I never seen or even run are in there..
Reason I ask is I seen some people say they'll have 200 free memory after running atk...me all I have is about 135/145...
Maps also just reappears on its own along with stock messaging...I use handcent.....

Well after almost a complete day with it installed hasn't helped battery at all...may have even made it worst...
Now more appso auto starts...like maps even though I have yet to open it....
Also when I kill I get only 75/85 free mem.....
Some one has to know something...
Seems that atk may not help me...

You don't need a task killer on these phones. The more you try to mess with how it works, the less battery life you will get. I get 2 days on a single charge, with daily usage.

I agree with miztaken1312. The system manages running apps pretty good on its own. I do have ATK installed but I only use it for a game or app that freezes and I can't "force stop" it from the built in running application list. To keep ATK from running in the background and wasting battery I keep it on the kill list so when I kill apps it kills itself until I open it again.

Loads of apps start on boot

I use advanced task killer (not the advanced part just using it manually) and have been noticing loads of random apps on startup. Is this normal, is it killing my battery or making my startup slower? Mostly concerned about the battery.

No one can give you a real answer on this. I used to us a task manager. I stopped. I do not notice a difference. Then again I flash a new rom every 4-5 days

The biggest misconception is that the tasks you see are "running" in the back ground. Nothing can be further from the truth. There's a reason that the apps start back up immediately after they are killed. Remember, this isn't windows. Android OS, especially 2.2, is designed for multitasking. The apps begin to load because it makes it easier for the OS to perform certain tasks. They appear to be running, but in fact are merely being used as a place holder so to speak. When the system recognizes it isn't needed, it stops the app from running and replaces it with said place holder. And even that is ended after a while. In essence, Android itself is a task killer. If you think about it, it's actually counter productive because the system expands more energy, or battery, when you close tasks that aren't ready to be closed, and uses more battery restarting those apps. Trust me, the OS knows what's best for the phone more than we do. I stopped using task killers and noticed a slight difference in my battery life, for the better, when I let Android to its thing.

Ok but why are they starting up during my boot?
I only use the task killer for poorly behaved apps if they malfunction or need to be reloaded for some reason, i don't turn on the auto part.

Android actually tries to start everything... at least it seems so to me. That way it doesn't waste time nor energy (battery) starting apps when it (or you) need them. Get something like osmonitor or system monitor or watchdog. Then you can see what the apps are actually using. Most of them sit there idle using 0 cpu time. Mostly you should let 'em be. It's a feature, not a bug!
I tried watchdog, it's pretty good. Now i can see the usage percentage, much better.

Also y can't laptops have an option to multitask like this? Seems like loads of battery would be saved.

When you kill a process and it has to start up again fresh that kills your battery more. To a certain extent, those task killer apps are scams

The apps that were booting were random ones like Yelp, and Adobe Reader etc that I don't think ought to have any bearing on startup. Using Watchdog, they don't seem to be affecting any CPU when they startup but aren't they slowing my boot for no reason? Or no.

Jerky performance problem, is it RAM or too many apps etc?

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone experience jerky performances.
I have about 10 pages of apps installed mostly games and stock apps.
When I use advance app killer, usually i see stock apps eg. facebook, browser, ebook, etc.. When I kill them all, performance doesn't improve much.
If the 10 pages are the reason, any way to know which is running in background and sucking up resources?
The performance of your Gtab is jerky coz of the apps that run in the background even if you close them they restart.. u cn use startup auditor app to increase performance... if all fails hard reset nd install only required Apps not the apps u don't use but run behind nd eat up RAM nd battery

a certain app may be using up too much background resources. try uninstalling the culprit. detct it by trial and error
I was in a similar situation until I last had to factory reset my Tab due to the whole issue with Google Apps Google Accounts not having access to Google Checkout on the Android Market.
Installed over 100 apps on my first day with the Tab (over-excited, I know ), and realized that my Tab started to lag when opening the app drawer. The problem became most apparent when I shut down or rebooted the Tab; it would literally take minutes to boot up, and often it would freeze and force close my launcher several times in a row.
I chalked it down to having too many apps, but later read that many apps start themselves up on boot even if they had no reason to (e.g. Amazon, Aldiko, etc.)
I've since only installed apps that I would really use throughout the day, but would you guys say that so long these apps do not run on startup (say I disable them using the Autostarts app), I can install a hundred or even two hundred apps without the boot up lag?
So there's no way to see which app is running in background and % memory used, similar to windows task manager?
When I use Advanced task killer, are those 'apps shown' considered as background apps or are background apps invisible?
From my RAM manager, I see like 180+ to 200mb out of 400+mb. I think that's the remaining RAM ?
Anyone knows the stock RAM out of the box?
It might be because carriers pre load crap on them

Installed the free startup app and found the culprits ... GAMELOFT games. They are huge in size and think they eat up the memory in background/at startup.
After disabling, all back to normal.

Why on earth would you want to detect it by trial and error when there is plenty of apps you can use to find it specifically?

Use a app like system panel, It will show you all the running apps and there memory/cpu consumption etc.

[question]regarding default task killer and free/usage Ram

after reading in one thread about atk somewhere in xda, I agree with the author and immediately remove from gt my P1000. then after a few days without atk there are some things I want to ask:
1.
the killer task default samsung just ending not more than 4-5 applications where my habit to always use the back button from one application to another. this is much different where atk while still using 17-20s can reach the applications in turn. what makes the difference between this 2application?
2.
Since i'm back to defat task killer, i always been 80-90% of ram usage and everytime i killed it always been around 350 ram, way different with atk which might reached 175 of usage ram. What is all about?
I'm running with default GtP1000 firmware no rooting. Appreciate those whom willing to brighten me up about this free ram
Regards

You probably want to go through and freeze any garbage/bloat apps that you don't need or use. Personally i use Titanium backup to freeze things, but there are a handful of free apps in the market that will do something similar.
As far as ATK, I generally don't use task killers, and rarely have any issues with my devices.

Meaning no need apps to clear-uninstall right? i can see that your device is rooted? yhanks for respond

freezing apps isn't uninstalling them (though there are plenty that come with stock firmware from any carrier that can and should be uninstalled) when you freeze them, you basically prevent them from running in any way on your Tab. You can defrost them to run if you find you need something you've frozen. Bloat Freezer on the market is a good cheap app that works very well.

Still curious what is the main different the way atk and default in killing task?
send from my premium XDA GT-P1000 2.3.3|DXJPE
the default task manager, only kills apps you manually started that are currently active. atk will kill the inactive apps, as well as some background tasks.
Once you get all the bloat frozen, you should see a better battery life, and better performance..

Prevent apps like Facebook from automatically running

I'be had fairly poor battery performance. When i went into running services i saw that quite a few were running that i didn't start up myself. Like Facebook. Tripit, hootsuite. I've made sure that notifications have been turned off but these apps are still loading up. Any way of making sure they don't load unless i manually load them?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I've been using watchdog. It lets me know when an app is running in the background and lets me kill it. If there's an automatic solution, I'd like to know about it too.

Don't use task killers/managers. It's like shutting your computer off repeatedly without shutting it down properly and has the ability to screw **** up.

Agreed, task killers... kill batteries.
Honestly, having it run in the background doesn't kill your battery. Its the syncing. I'm assuming you are NOT rooted? If so, then there are a number of apps to help you, primarily Titanium Backup so you can FREEZE the app.
If you want to have a quick free fix, go under accounts, and turn off sync for those apps. Saves battery life like you wouldn't believe.
There's also an app called "LTE Switch" that brings you to the LTE Menu so you can switch to CDMA (Also a HUGE battery saver)
Good luck!
I am rooted and running UNL3ASH3D V2.0. And yes I understand it's the syncing that kills the battery. I've turned off syncing on these apps but they're still loading which makes me think they are still using at least some battery. None of these programs (like Facebook) are listed in Accounts.

None are showing under Accounts? Hmm, thats odd. Usually, when you first get your phone, it asks to set these up. What all apps start up upon reboot? And you are NOT rooted, correct? I'll do some research
I'm not using the Social Networking app. Standalone versions of Facebook, Hoot Suite, etc.
What I'm using is a program that is a part of my file explorer, ES Task Manager. Instead of KILLING the apps, I can force them at startup to not run. So I stopped Gun Bros and Contract Killer from running at startup because they had these annoying notifications they would send me about buying in-game stuff and really didn't need to be run at all. And I couldn't find a way to turn them off lol, so this works out well for me. If you don't want something running at startup, you can do it this way, and it could potentially help battery life because it would only run when you tell it to. And you need root access to do this.
Great suggestion

Look for program called "Startup Manager" in market - works great!
hello...i used a auto start manager, works great..but i also want that when i close facebook from recent app that it kills the process...in rom tools task manager i see that facebook is a hidden app (like whatsapp) so the built-in task manager doesn't kill it when i close the app..any ideas how to make the facebook app "visible" so that the task manager auto kills it like other apps and games?

People say that but whenever I haven't used one, I can notice the difference in performance. My bionic runs better with ATK.

Advanced Task Killer?

Do I need to keep advanced task killer on my bionic running ics or is it unnecessary?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
You can kill runaway apps in settings, apps, running which should be sufficient. Using task killers that autostart and continuously kill apps will do more harm than good.
Haven't needed a task killer since my devices were on Gingerbread here. Hold the Home button to bring up the recent apps and swipe them away in there to kill them. Any other rogue apps can be shutdown like other poster said by just hitting settings>apps and Force closing them from there.
ICS certainly makes it easier. Quite frankly I haven't bothered with a task killer since Android is supposed to handle all that pretty much automatically (at least we read about it everywhere).
Thanks, I'm going to give it a try and remove the app.

Good idea -- vestige of very early versions of Android.
+1 to what you have already been told.
Don't kill tasks unless you know you absolutely don't want the program open, or maybe opened it by accident.
Android will stack a list of apps you have used. When resources are getting near low, it will start to empty. I hope I am not giving misinformation on the exact process, seems to me what my phone does. Any apps you use more than once a day should not be killed, they will switch faster next time you access them. That's just how Android works.
