Hi
I have a HTC Touch Viva and I want to get internet from my laptop via WiFi (ad-hoc) I do make connection it has internet accessibility I can connect to my laptop from my Viva and when I ping it from my laptop it responds but I don't have internet on my Viva, one of my friends told me I have to set DNS server for Viva which there is no option for doing that, is there any step by step guide to help me I found something but it didn't work for me.
I'll be so glad if you can help me. (by the way, I use Evolution ultimate BETA as my current ROM if you need to know)
Best Regards
Why don't you connect your device to the laptop via Activesync (via Bluetooth or USB)? It will automatically allow you to share your internet connection with the device, and you don't have to set up anything.
Anyway, try going to Start>Setup>Connections>Wifi>Network Adapters and choose "The Internet" from the drop-down list. Reconnect to the laptop and try accessing the internet.
If that doesn't work, choose the "IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi Adapter" and tap on "Edit", it will take you to an interface where you can set a static-ip and the DNS servers manually.
Hope it works for you.
To tell you the truth it doesn't matter for me how to do it I just want to get my ADSL internet on my device via laptop I did as you said

How can I get internet via USB Activesync?
Thanks for reply
and I couldn't find a place to add DNS server in edit part of "IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi Adapter"
Well, it's there on my device:

However if things don't work out you can always try the Activesync method:
Assuming you're using Windows 7:
- Click on Start and type "windows mobile device center", and click on the program that appears in the list of programs.
- Now connect your device via USB.
- Your computer will recognize your device and start installing drivers for it (this only happens the first time you connect your device). Wait till the drivers are installed.
- The Windows Mobile Device Center will show up on the screen and ask you to set up your device for synchronization.
- Set up your device the way you want it. You could also choose to "Connect to device without configuration".
- Now try to use a browser in your device, it should work.
Note: the steps above are only necessary for first-time connection. After that, you could just plug your device via USB or Bluetooth and it will connect automatically so you can use the internet with no additional setup.
If all fails, please provide some more details about your network setup. And make sure that Internet Sharing (ICS) is set up properly on your laptop.
Good luck.
Thanks for helping I did but again I couldn't get internet on my device ether ways (Activesync, wireless) what kind of information do you need?
Tell us about your problem:
- Give us a step by step description of your problem.
- How do you connect to the internet at home? ADSL or 3G? What's your router brand and model?
- Why didn't Activesync work for you? What version of Windows do you use?
- Did you setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in your laptop?
- Does your ISP require a proxy to connect to the internet?
Sharing your internet connection should be fairly easy. I think the problem is a software conflict, or a misconfigured settings on the device or laptop.
Thanks for your answers
-I just make a conection on my laptop and I conect with my Touch viva I ping it through my laptop and it respond but there is no internet in touch viva
-I connect through ADSL modem, TP-LINK TD-8811 and I use Lan cabel
- I use Evolution ultimate beta, and ActiveSync works well on phone I can do anything through ActiveSync it just don't have internet
-about ICS I enabeled it by right clicking on it and allowing it to share internet with other connection.
-No my proxy don't use proxy setting
Ok, try this method:
- Reset your WiFi adapter settings in Viva (re-enable DHCP, and empty the DNS address fields).
- Download this program and try connecting through it:
http://www.connectify.me/
It will turn your laptop into a WiFi access point so you can see it in Viva and connect to it as a normal WiFi router.
Remember to revert the WiFi settings to default!
Try it and tell us what happens.
Good luck.

When I connect my 8925 via USB, ActiveSync creates a LAN connection (under My Network Places \ Properties) and this hoses my PC's network connection.
Anyone have a fix for this?
What do you mean by "hoses"? Be a little more specific with details and I'll try to help.
BTW, the LAN connection that Active sync creates is normal.
Once I connect my 8925 I can no longer get to the Internet with anything in XP. Seems like WM6 (or ActiveSync) takes over the gateway or something.
i remember that happened to me. just disable the "allow this device to connect to the network", or you can just properly set up internet connection sharing on your main connection.

as soon as I connect my 8925 my PC cannot connect to the internet. I must remove the USB connection from my 8925 and then disable/enable (in XP) my PC's NIC to get the connection back.
this sux big time... I appreciate the help guys!
Untick USB to PC?
Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC
Only thing I have different on my Connection Settings is I have the last box checked
...Allow wireless connections on this device..etc...etc.
On my Kaiser's Internet Sharing setting I have USB for the PC Connection and Media.Net for the Network Connection BUT it doesnt connect till I tell it to
Are you using a third party wireless network configuration service or wireless zero configuration service which is what I use
Could your home PC network subnet be the same as the subnet created by Activesync and your device? This might screw up the routing.
Do an "ipconfig /all" from the cmd prompt while your device is plugged in and post the output.
It is working fine again... I reinstalled ActiveSync... no clue why that "fixed" it since I have not made any changes otherwise.
strange!!!
thanks for the help everyone!

Strange, yet not. Glad you got it fixed, and thanks for the update.
It acts odd... as soon as I plug in the 8925 the internet connection stops working... it takes from 30 seconds to a few minutes then it "comes back"
I hate AS... MS sux big time with this app. seems like they only let the kindergarden programmers work in it.

PS:
- All DNS settings are same
Sorry for the bump.
I have no idea what you're trying to accomplish here, but you might try isolating DNS issues and try pinging an IP address, I usually just go with google.com, 209.85.225.104 is one of many..
I found that tethering my laptop to my HTC Rhodium in the past if I set the connection up manually (NOT using BT PAN) I had to set the laptop DNS to a specific AT&T DNS server or I couldn't resolve IPs.. If I used BT PAN, no problem.. Why I have no idea.. I suspect the routing is done differently.

Hi, i'm trying to do "reverse tethering" using Windows ICS and WiFi AdHoc.
I can connect my N1 to laptop via WiFi. But my N1 still cannot use internet. I also tried to change DNS setting to google but still no luck. Tried pinging 192.168.0.1 but got cannot resolve error message (using terminal). Tried turning off Windows Firewall on my laptop, still no luck.
I need help.
Have you tried a different device (a random PDA, iPod, or any other device with WiFi) to see if you can establish the connection on it? That way, you'll be able to isolate your issue to either the PC or the N1.
I don't have other device to test.
But just so you know, I've tried the tethering via usb and wifi from my N1 to my laptop, not working too.
Except when I use PdaNet application, only then i can tether my N1 into laptop. But PdaNet cannot reverse tether.
Need help.
EDIT:
Wait, I own PS3. Maybe I can try it. Will report back later.
At my PS3 it says: "Access Point not found". What did I wrong? But at my N1 i can connect to my laptop. Help.
Also, is this related to what ROM I'm using?
I don't know if the Bionic has some sort of special way it deals with WiFi but it can't seem to connect to the WiFi at home? Does it need some sort of special setup? My Optimus One is able to connect just fine. And the Bionic was able to download a few files while connected to the school WiFi.
Does it have problems with certain routers? It just keeps saying "Obtaining IP address" and it won't get connected. We are using an Airport at home and I'm not sure what kind of router the school has. Is there some sort of setting that is different in the WiFi advanced settings from other phones?
What are your wifi settings on? WPA/WPA2? your have to make sure you try to connect with the same settings that your router uses. There are various setups so you may want to check that out. Mine is on WPA/WPA2 but there are others.
Also, you may want to try unplugging your router and plugging it back in.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
You may also want to check out how many current connections you have to your network. If your wifi isn't password protected, your neighborhood may be using your network and your router may be at capacity for active connections.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
I'd try the advise above first and if that doesn't work then try changing your SSID to something unique and seeing if it will connect then. One other note may be to set your router to wireless G only, I've seen issues with mine trying to connect to certain wireless N routers.
In Wifi Settings, press Menu and go to Advanced Settings. Ensure that you have Enable AutoIP turned on. For some reason I dont usually see it turned on by default.

Alright I fixed it ^_^ I switched from WEP to WPA/WPA2 and enabled AutoIP just in case. AutoIp did not fix it though. Had to switch to WPA/WPA2.
Thank you everyone

Glad you got it fixed. I am adding this story in case anyone else might suffer from this.
My friend and his wife have Droid Bionics that could connect to wifi around town (hospital, McDonald’s, Starbucks, etc) but not to his wifi at home. They both had the 5.9.905 software on their Bionics. At his home he has a Netgear WPN824 v3 router (capable of B and G but not N) with fully updated firmware. The router was already set to channel 6 instead of auto and no mac filtering was turned on. When he would try to connect to the wifi at his house his Bionic would connect to the router but blocked apps from passing data back and forth and they would finally time out. The bionic would show a strong wifi signal and the wifi icon would be blue.
His encryption type had been ‘WPA-PSK [TKIP]’ and according to some forums we read that should have worked. We tried upgrading his phone to ICS leak .232 and we were very surprised that this did not fix the wifi problem.
It turned out that by turning off all encryption on his router his phone was finally able to pass data. I changed the encryption to ‘WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]’ and that seemed to do the trick for both their phones. I suspect that if you have a similar problem you could try changing to no encryption and if that works try one of the other encryption types and maybe one of them will work for you. I hope this helps someone get their Bionic and wifi working and saves you some time.
I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly what I should be doing in order to get my router to use my phones tethering ability. According to the ASUS FAQ it should be as simple as plugging the phone in and enabling USB tethering but nothing happens.
Does anyone else have a similar combination? Any tips or tricks to get it working?
Phone is i9305
Network is T-Mobile UK (Re-branded EE)
Router is ASUS RT-N66U on the latest firmware
The aforementioned guide is here.
There are also a bundle of other options regarding setting up USB modems etc, but as far as I can tell this is for when using 3g/4g dongles. See the guide here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My internet doesn't go down very often but I would rather figure out how to get it working now than mess around when it actually does go down.
Oh, wireless tether and USB tether work perfectly when used directly with a PC/Laptop/etc.
Cheers
Hello,
I have almost the same combo: same mobile but AC version of your router. Shouldn't change much though. It really is as simple as it sounds, plug it in and click usb tether. However, I upgraded the firmware today and it stopped working! I fixed it by going to Dual WAN (under the WAN options on the left) and setting USB as the primary one. Try it and see if it works.
Good luck mate.

That's great, thanks very much for that.
I've been in contact with the ASUS support and they are worse than useless. I don't get why companies even go to the hassle of setting up technical support when no one can be bothered doing anything other than sending generic, pre-written, responses. The first reply I got stated that the router wasn't capable of anything other than printer sharing and storage sharing, absolutely clueless.
Ok I gave it a go but didn't get anywhere unfortunately.
I'm assuming the status page is the same for both routers. With Dual Wan enabled I get 2 WAN connections at the top with "Disconnected" on them. The USB connections show nothing connected when I connect my phone to the first port, but it shows "usb_3g_dongle" when I attach it to the second.
With Dual WAN disabled I get either the first or the second USB connection showing "usb_3g_dongle" depending on which one it is connected to. Nothing works regardless.
I think I'll try messing around with an older firmware to see if that works.
Cheers
Still no luck
I installed RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_276
Reset the modem (reset button for 7 seconds)
Plugged phone in (WAN cable connection out) and turned on USB Tether
Nothing happened. 3G and usb_3g_dongle shows up but no WAN IP and it shows as "Disconnected".
When yours works, is the USB Modem option enabled? I've tried mine both on and off and it's made no difference, just thought I would check if that was perhaps a player in all this.
Cheers

Here is what it looks like

Not to worry, I got it working
To be honest I have no idea what I did to get it working as everything I did I had already previously tried. However, for the sake of rounding off the thread (should others have the same issue) here is the exact settings that I am using.
Firmware Version - 3.0.0.4.374_720
In Advanced WAN: Dual WAN
Enable Dual WAN - On
Primary WAN - WAN
Secondary WAN - USB
Dual WAN mode - Fail Over (This simply means it'll always use the Primary when it can, should your internet go down it'll switch)
In Advanced WAN: Internet Connection
WAN Type - USB
Enable USB Modem - Yes
Location - Manual
USB Modem - WCDMA(UMTS)
Everything else is blank other than USB Adapter which is set to Auto.
Once you have your setup configured as above simply plug your phone into one of the USB ports (I use the top one if your router is lying down) and enable "USB Tethering".
If everything is working you SHOULD see Primary WAN - Connected and Secondary WAN - Standby.
When your Primary WAN (cable for example) goes down, it switches to your Secondary WAN which will then change to Primary WAN - Disconnected and Secondary WAN - Connected.
Easy way to test it out is to simply unplug your WAN cable, it should automatically switch to your phone.
what tethering app did you use?
I've tried all of your settings, but I can't get it to work with PdaNet. Is that the app you're using?

Hi mate,
Not using any apps at all. Everything set exactly as I've written above, and enable USB tether on the phone itself. Obviously 3G needs to be enabled too, other than that... job done.
Our internet was down for a few days last weekend, came in VERY handy
Is there a solution to enable Wifi hotspot while being connected to Wifi - creating a wifi bridge? The Fastconnect 6800 can do it as it has dual wifi- and any other flagship I know can do it (Oneplus 11 only on another frequency on CN OS, while 5g/5g is possible with Global OS.
Is this just another damn limitation of Origin OS/this phone?

Hmm, very strange. Must be some setting then? Just which/what...
Do you get that warning that I show above when having hotspot enabled and trying to torn on wifi? Meaning for you it would only be possible to activate hotspot when wifi is on, but can you activate wifi when hotspot (mobile data hotspot) is on?
BTW can you enable "Data Network Acceleartion"? That point exists in my phone - and it tells me I cannot activate it while roaming - but I'm not roaming (though I do use a virtual network provider - so that may be part of the problem - meaning the vivo gets this wrong - I remember in very early Android versions virtual network providers meand you need to enable roaming)

If I turn wifi off and enable hotspot, it comes up with a message asking if I want to enable Wifi to use that to tether.
And no, I cannot enable Data Network Acceleration (I have roaming enabled and I am not using a virtual network provider.
Oh I was blind, didn't find the setting "allow WiFi network tethering" which was off. Enabling it enabled the bridge mode.
I wonder if the data network acceleration only works in China or if it's incompatible with virtual network providers or what's the deal there.
