I bought the G1 with the intention of using the free yahoo mail that comes with tmobile prepaid's "t-zones." Now, I learned that T-Mobile blocks all g1 traffic to tzones. It works with my old iphone 2g and even my brother's mytouch, just not the G1.
If I flash a rogers dream or hero rom, will t-mobile not recognize it as a G1 and still let me on T-zones?
They do it by IMEI apparently, and since there's no way to change it (which would probably be illegal anyway)...

Does that mean a rogers dream phone would have worked? Should have bought that instead...

No. Rogers is Canadian, T-Mobile is US, the imei would just get rejected.
BTW please read the rules and look into sections before posting. This should be in Q&A. Thanks. Tagged for a move
It depends if both phones uses the same code in the IMEI to identify the device as a 'dream'. So it might, I really don't know. Since Rogers uses different frequencies than tmo you would loose 3G anyway, which appears to defeat the point.

You lovely people have never steered me wrong, so I have a question for you all.
I lost my account with AT&T (broke as a joke) and I am thinking about signing up with Credo Mobile since they are way cheaper and direct money to non-profits like the one I work for. I have a Tilt that is not unlocked and after reading through some of these posts I was wondering a couple of things.
1. Does unlocking the phone make it work with any carrier's SIM card?
2. Since I still owe AT&T scrilla, will they give me the unlock code, even if I lie to them and say I am heading out of the country? I am sure that I could find someone with an account and hijack their card for a second, but I'm still curious.
Any info would be most appreciated!

While this is posted totally in the wrong forum, I will answer anyway. Yes Sim unlocking your phone will allow you to use it with any sim.
And no, you have to have an account in good standing for AT$T to give you the unlocking code.
Just follow mskips guide and you will have no problem unlocking your phone.
Should have been posted in Kaiser General as it has nothing to do with rom development.
actually credo mobile uses CDMA technology like sprint and verizon, so a GSM phone (Tilt) isnt gonna work with them...just so ya know.

If credo is CDMA, then credo SIM can't won't exist, will they? And the point of SIM unlocking is to use other SIMs.

Hi folks. I'm visiting from the CDMA Hero section. My friend has G1 he doesn't need and I want to buy it off him it it can be unlocked and used in Europe (Barcelona and Paris) with something like a prepaid SIM card. As I mentioned, I'm visiting from the CDMA forum-- I've never had a GSM phone and don't know a thing about unlocking.
I've searched the stickied threads and general forum but nothing stood out. This possible? Worth it? I'm no stranger to custom roms or Android.
Please advise. Thanks.
It's possible and very easy, somebody just needs to call T-mobile and request an unlock code. Usually they send it within a week. Please note that you will not get 3G in Europe (99% sure) as they use different frequencies. You will still get the edge network.
It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.
BTW, canadian Dream should do just fine in Europe with 3G (once more, 99% sure)
Good luck.
thanks. that was painless.

I have a TMO Nexus One, which gets 3G no problem. My friend has a Nexus One that was bought for her, but she only gets Edge. When she puts her SIM in my phone, it gets 3G. When I put my SIM in her phone, I only get Edge.
My hypothesis is that she was accidentally given an ATT Nexus One, and not a TMO Nexus One, which explains why it will connect, but no 3G. My next test is to find a douchy friend with an iPhone and drop their douchy SIM into her phone and see if it gets 3G. But before I do that, is there a model number that I can tell which distinguishes the ATT vs. the TMO Nexus One?
Thanks in advance!

Odds are, your suspicions are correct. Check the APN settings in her phone to confirm that they're entered correctly, or entered at all. Sometimes this information is not entered. Worst case scenario, if it IS an AT&T N1, put it up on Craigslist for trade. I see a lot of people doing that in the Dallas market.
***edit****
One more thing, upon boot-up, is her bootloader unlocked? Do you see the unlock icon on the initial boot-up screen? If it's not there, then she DOES have a T-Mo N1. A T-Mo SIM can't work in at AT&T N1 unless the bootloader's unlocked.

APN settings were correct, but I will redoublecheck to satisfy my own OCD. her bootloader is locked, however, and her phone is bone stock, so this is doubly strange...

why not? the phone itself is carrier unlocked, why can't a T-Mobile sim work in an AT&T phone?

this is what i thought as well
Under the battery, there's a model number like PB99100. I got that from the TMO version. ATT is different, but I don't remember what it is exactly, something like PB99109.

ah i noticed that too...it was different from my TMO phone. like PB99110 or something close, but different. now to find a douchy iPhone user with a douchy SIM card and confirm my theory...thanks broseph!

I'm pretty sure PB99110 is indeed the model number for the AT&T-version N1.
I got my N1 from eBay and had to ask about the model number to make sure I have the right version.

there is a cell phone provider in canada.
not tmobile or att..
they claim to get fresh inventory of N1's
they claim that they will be locked to their network only and cannot be unlocked at all..
level one rep couldnt tell me what band they use-- just that phones will use their own 3G
they will sell phones outright but said that they are useless on another network..
what stock can i put in what i was told?
thanx
Most probably - 0 credibility.
A nexus one CANNOT be carrier-locked. End of story. No matter where you get your N1 from, it WILL come UNLOCKED.

You say that, but there are numerous reports of the French (SFR) N1's being carrier locked.

And it's about 100th time you're writing this and failing to read the reply - that ALL the SFR Nexus that were checked, weren't carrier locked at all. People report what the sales reps tell them.

It will be working on one of those. There are only 2 models of Nexus, one WILL work 3G with TMo, one WILL work 3G with AT&T. Nobody can change it without digging into HW and changing antennas, or at the very least changing the radio to restrict some of the communications - and nobody could get any of this done. HTC doesn't allow HW changes in their phones, and Qualcomm doesn't provide customized radio builds on demand (or at all).
Considering this, I believe the story of this carrier's rep has the same credibility as SIM lock of SFR Nexus - which is, 0.
im pretty sure they are going to videotron in Quebec. they use AWS.

I shall not mention it again

I wasn't serious about 100 times, either
But there were 2 reports on this forum from people that bought the phone, were told that it's locked, checked it and discovered it completely unlocked.

how can we find out which usa carrier they will work on?
the rep said that the company is using their carrier lines from old sony ..
i completely didnt understand this at all..
thanx
One way would be to find the carrier on this list:

Hello Everyone,
I've done a bit of searching but still can't find out if i'm having an issue or if this is the way it's suppose to work. This is my first experience with an Unlocked phone as well as Android. So here's the story.
I rooted my phone and then used the Unlock Pro to unlock it. I ordered an AT&T Sim card from Ebay, which arrived last week. I put the Sim card in my phone and it boots up, everything seems fine except that it says "No Service". I contacted AT&T and they confirmed that the Sim is active and it should be working.
To make sure that my phone was unlocked. I used the program to lock it again "with the rogers SIM in it" and then put in the AT&T sim and I was asked for an Unlock Code. So I took that to mean that it was properly unlocked. So I unlocked it again, and then put the Sim in but still "No Service".
I tried to put in the APN settings that I found on a site, but not sure if they are correct. and now i'm at a loss. I had purchased this for an upcoming trip to the states, but don't want to put any money on the account if it's not going to work.
I guess my first question is this "Should a new sim work out of the box?" i.e. should I be able to put in and get service even though I would be roaming in Canada?? Or do I have to be in the states first before it will work and allow me to roam in canada?
Any help you guys can provide or explaination on how it "should" work, would be great.
Well....does att provide service in canada? I don't know if rogers is part of att or not. If they don't I would assume the sim would not work because of no att towers?
Thanks for getting back to me. Rogers is not part of AT&T but they use the same GSM Frequency. So anyone travelling up here on AT&T would use the rogers towers (I believe).
That's why I'm thinking I need to be in the states before the SIM will work.
I would call att back and ask them if the case. Makes sense to me, but I'm nobody.
actually Rogers is owned by att. it is AT&T rogers wireless~!
but that does not mean that it should work.
APN settings are for data, you should still be able to make calls...
LOLOL cute
Ya i think I will do that tonight. When I was talking to them last time, the woman didn't really understand why i couldn't connect. but then again i don't think she really understood that I was in canada. LOL
Canada has the internet? Lol

Wow I'm still running with my 9800 Baud modem. Saving up for a 14.4.
Bing bong biiiiiiiing.....ahhhh the soothing sounds of dialup....those were the days.
I just tried the SIM again, seeing if maybe after a week it might just work now but ya no luck. you never know it could happen. LOLOL I'm wondering if I need to get a roaming package added to the Go Phone plan that i'm on before it will work. Gonna call customer support and find out
Since this is my first time with anything like this I'm not really sure about anything LOL
Okay so I just called at&t customer support. Didn't start off so well. First the guy told me that don't offer any service nor can any AT&T customer roam in canada. then he placed me on hold when I asked him to confirm, and he came back saying that AT&T doesn't off roaming in canada on their pay as you go phones. So i guess I can believe that one
Looks like i'll have to put some money on the sim and then hope it works when I go down there, Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.
