[RESOLVED] Flashed custom kernel, usb now not working - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After trying no less than 6 hours to get into download, just before I was going to head to bed feeling crappy, I got into download, flashed stock kernel and have my phone up and running again. I apologize to all those I have messaged and bothered tonight.
This is my first android phone. I'm out of ideas right now so if someone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
Earlier today, I installed a vibrant custom kernel by KingKlick. I THINK it's not compatible with the Bell i9000M variant and it's causing problems on my phone. The biggest problem I have is, the phone shuts down whenever the usb is plugged in. I backed up my rom with rom manager, but when I restored, it didn't work. Maybe I did something wrong when I backed it up? I don't know.
So now, my option is to flash it back to stock kernel, but I don't know what kernel I should flash it to. It seems that T-mobile is different from bell's vibrant?
I've downloaded odin, and firmware I9000UGJH2 but I can't do anything with it. When USB is plugged in, the phone shuts down
Thanks in advance. I might sound needy but I appreciate any help
EDIT: Is there a kernel I can flash to without Odin that is compatible with i9000M?

[Q] Stock Rogers Canada ROM

Hello All,
I'm starting a new thread, because I am in a situation where I want to get my girlfriends phone back to stock so I can warranty it, and hopefully someone here will have the answer and people will have one place to look for putting their Roger's Samsung Captivate back to stock.
I'm hoping someone can tell everyone why we can't seem to get back to stock on these ROM's, here are the things I've tried:
Originally cleared everything rooted the phone through an update.zip, then put on the Clockworkmod Recovery and flashed Cognition v2.3b8, Trying to fix, battery life and lagging issues on her phone, (had a couple of random restarts the day before I flashed, so I was hoping it would fix that).
Then she started noticing the random restarts more often, so I tried:
clearing everything again through the recovery and tried restore from my backup to put things back, it looks like it extracted (or Installed) successfully then when it boots, it gets to the black, "Swipe" screen, then it freezes.
I tried to flash the Rogers_Stock.zip, same thing. Then I extracted the zip, and put it into the backup folder, hoping it will restore it like a normal restore, same thing.
So right now I'm stuck with a phone that says AT&T when it boots (I read one post on how to remove that) and cognition boot up.
Basically, I want to get this to look enough like stock to return.
I was thinking I can try to get rid of that AT&T popup, then flash the stock ROM, and say it just stopped booting for some reason. But then I still need to get rid of the Clockworkmod Recovery.
Wow that was a mouthful.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide for use Roger's users (or their significant others).

There are others like it too. Just don't try flashing the bootloader or sbl !

Gin's got you on the right path for sure. A couple more items for you:
This post should help with removing the AT&T bootup logo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849789
If you use Heimdall to flash the Rogers stock firmware that is in the post the Gin linked to then you will absolutely need to follow the instructions to use the Heimdall drivers for your captivate when it's connected or it won't see the device when you tell it to start. Like gin said, don't touch primary or secondary bootloader, leave those out and don't try to repartition it.
Restoring the stock firmware will remove the custom kernel that is installed with Cognition (at least it should) and so the Clockwork recovery should no longer be installed once the restore to stock is done. You can double-check once you are back to stock by powering off the phone and then hold both up and down volume + power, let the power button go after it restarts once and you see the I896 for the 2nd time. It should take you to the stock 2e recovery screen. If it does, you should be golden.
HTH
Wow, thanks all,
I used that method without the PIT file,
I just want to say thanks to everyone that offered help,
Goina try to send it for warranty now.
thanks again,

How to remove kernel?

Hi,
Short story:
I'm bringing in my device (a Samsung Captivate i896) to get replaced at a Rogers store. However, I had installed a kernel (I think, I'm still new to this and I'm not sure which one it was) that flashes (i9000 Samsung Galaxy S) on the startup splash screen. How do I remove this from my startup screen so my device isn't voided?
Long story:
My phone dialler has, literally, just stopped working on me. When I dial out I hear no connecting tone, the other person's voice nor can they hear mine. I also can't receive calls. The only way my phone works is if I put it on speaker function (then I can hear everything) but the second I uncheck the speaker function, BAM the device dies on me. I'm trying to get it replaced.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks!
Go back to a stock rom.

HAHAHAHA!!! DUDE i did this last night!!!! flashed a cw comatible kernel and my phone no longer recoginzed a sim was installed anymore! i lied my ass off and got it replaced because i forgot to backup first and NEEDED my phone that night. couldnt play forever...
So... any idea where we screwed up? besides not backing up? is the usa att kernels not compatible with canadian sims?
Nope, not compatible at all. Once it says AT&T on the startup screen you're totally screwed since the phone will not recognize your SIM anymore (it thinks you're in the States).
How did you manage to get it replaced? What did you tell them? I'm pretty stuck...
I told them that my phone was eracing my music files on the internal sim card. then it locked up well I was transferring files and wasn't able to make calls anymore...
with my new phone I flashed the phoenix 4.1 rom which has a new kernel, and everything is great. Pm me for advice and back up files

Moved to Captivate Q&A
also, after my first experience, ive done everything possible WITHOUT odin. it took me forever to realize there is an Odin3 and an Odin 1step. have trouble finding info on how to use odin3.
so i use rom manager with clockwork mod (read the e3 link) or custom roms that have clockwork recovery in their kernel. Steam recovery kernels look good too.
Firebird 2.04 Kernel + Phoenix 4.1
Anyone know if the Firebird 2.04 Kernel works well with Phoenix 4.1? Can I use Clockwork to flash Firebird 2.04 Kernel to Phoenix 4.1? Thanks.

What did you guys do? I have been flashing ROMS like crazy and my Rogers sim is recognized.
I have changed kernels, roms and modems with no issue.
well im good now but with my first captivate i flashed a "cwcompatible" kernel with ODIN 3 into the *Phone* box. after that, couldnt make calls, and couldnt get into APN settings because it was telling me there was no SIM installed. i was too new and didnt backup properly.
Now i dont use ODIN and dont have problems. still not sure what i did wrong.
been extra careful ever since tho.

What you did wrong was use a CWcompatible kernal in ODIN.
The flash files go into the PDA section.
ah just figured out what i did.. and you helped. the kernel i had was for odin, from what i remember but it was going to flash a kernel that had cw in it. i was having trouble doing update.zip method because of e3 recovery.
I just opened oden for the first time since that day, and realized i confused PDA with PIT which i knew took a differnt type of file, and went with the next box that took tar... PHONE... my dumb mistake.

Glad I could help
The problem when I had AT&T running on my phone (instead of Rogers) is that there's no sideloading, hence, I was unable to enter download mode at all to put the Rogers ROM back on it. Therefore = screwed.
past tense? did you fix it? replace it? and you can always clockwork recovery flash anything.

[Q] Some questions about flashing back to stock Rogers 2.1

Hello! I apologize for adding yet another post about this, but I've looked around the forums, and it seems like all of the answers are scattered all over the place. It just ended up confusing me even more, so I'm hoping someone can clarify a few things for me.
I'm looking to flash back to stock 2.1 from Rogers, and update to 2.2 via Kies. I want to return my phone to Rogers since I'm having the shutdown problems (it's shutting down frequently now), so I'm trying to get my warranty restored. My phone is currently the unofficial AT&T 2.2 ROM from I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgear (ODIN one-click).
From reading around, I saw that there are two methods to restore stock - either by ODIN3 or Heimdall - but it seems like people had a different ROM from the one I have right now, and I'm not really sure if this should make a difference.
I don't really want to end up with a brick phone, so any tips you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

edit: i see you were posting in that thread already....
Yeah. orz I probably should have waited more, but I thought no one was really looking at that thread as frequently.
Thanks though! I'll just stick to that thread instead.
well, i haven't used heimdall, but i've used odin. it won't matter what rom you are currently on. what i would suggest is making sure you have 3 button recovery working correctly before using though.... just because there are versions of the one-click odin that will remove it, and i see that's what you have used... although i believe the flash you did shouldn't have removed it. you will not be able to get to "true" rogers stock, but if you follow some of instructions in the posts in that thread, your phone will get pretty close to stock - boot screens and all. i don't know how hard rogers will look at your phone before determining whether or not it will be covered.
Thank you so much for the reply!
The three-button recovery is the vol+, vol-, and power button, right? Also, if it isn't "true" Rogers stock, does that mean it isn't advisable to update to the official 2.2 ROM via Kies?

Flash to stock without Odin?

Hey guys. Forgive my lack of knowledge with the Captivate please, as I don't own one. I'm coming from the Evo 3D forums. My friend has a Cappy, and is having issues connecting to the pc via USB. I've searched a bit for some info, and all I came up with that was relevant was this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808580. His problem started with extreme battery drain, lagginess, and freezing up. He decided he wanted to flash back to stock, and at that time discovered that his PC no longer recognizes the device. He gets an error complaining of unrecognized device. Apparently you need to run Odin in order to flash back to stock, from what I understand. Since his computer won't detect the phone, he can't use Odin. The phone does charge via USB and A/C. Also, he said that when he shuts the phone down, it won't reboot unless he does a battery pull, or reboots it from recovery.
Basically what I'm wondering, is there a way to flash back to stock without using Odin? With my Evo, you have two options of flashing back to stock. One, is using the RUU executable file from Windows, and letting that flash the phone back to stock. The other is to put a file called PC36IMG.zip on the sd card (of course the file would be pre packaged with the same images as the RUU would use) and boot to the bootloader. At that point, the bootloader would detect the file and ask to update. Then it'd flash back to stock using the bootloader, thus eliminating any need for a computer. Is there anything like that with the Sammy's? Thanks in advance for any input.
Btw, he has tried re-installing the drivers already, and is going to pick up a new usb cable on his way home. He hasn't tried the new cable yet. I know cables fail, but I'm skeptical due to the other issues he's having with the phone. It all started at the same time. I'm not sure which rom he was using at the time, I'm waiting for him to reply to me with that info. I know a month or so ago he was on some version of Cognition, but am not sure if he still was.

No the captivate dosen't have something like that (at the time maybe one day), their is heimdall which is an open source alternative to odin.
Why are you posting for your friend? if he's running on a custom ROM shouldn't he have an account?

Thanks. I'll check it out. And yea, I know all about the search button (I did actually use it, just didn't have time to learn all the Sammy stuff). It's just that I don't have a Sammy, and everything here is wildly different than HTC. I didn't have the time to learn everything I'd need to in order to understand all the different terminology. I'll search for a JH7 and KB1 (although I don't even know what they are, haha) Sorry again for posting in your forum without having much knowledge on the Sammy stuff, and thanks for taking the time to reply.
It is my phone!!
The whole reason behind this is that I have till the end of August till the warranty expires. Running Serendipity VII. The phone will only boot with battery install, or power and volume up into recovery then reboot. So I want to go back to stock except PC won't see the phone. New cable, different PC deleted and re-install drivers. Still get usb device not recognized. With phone powered off plug in charger and nothing happens. Used to get image of battery. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't apologize for asking a question, that's why there is a q&a section. Search is a lot easier if you know what it is your searching for.
Jh7 and kb1 are firmware. Jh7 is the ota update that followed the release of jf6 (what a lot of captivates were shipped with) and is android 2.1. Kb1 is the 2.2 version that people upgraded to with kies mini(kies mini is the samsung online upgrade program).

[Q] Rooting my captivate, can't copy root file to phone

Hey folks. I'm bailing on Gingerbread because it was causing me too many problems. I'm trying to get back on Firefly 3.0 and I'm stuck at getting the phone rooted.
Whenever I try to copy the Root.zip from the AIO folder over to the phone's root folder, I get an error about the parameter being incorrect. I'm not sure what to do at this point.
Use Fugu root? Easier.... Also depending on what Gingerbread you are on there are kernels that have the root scrip baked in them.
^ you misread he's not on gingerbread, he wants to flash firefly.
You don't need root to flash a ROM. Odin a kernel that has cwm baked in. boot into recovery and flash the ROM.
Thought he was on GB trying to get on... you know what ya I missread. @OP do what Studa said xD. Wonder why people think they need root to flash roms..... I blame Rom Manager.
I know I don't need to root the phone, but in order to get certain things done on the phone, it's necessary.
I'm actually at a wall right now. I used SamsungCaptivate-SGHi897-UCKB2-Rooted-One-Click which successfully booted my phone to ATT 2.2 firmware, but I can't get any Odin to pick up on it now. I've tried five different Odins.
At this point, I think once I get the phone up and running on Firefly, I'll be walking away from flashing until I get another phone. Then I can use this for testing, etc.
On a side note, before I started this project yesterday, my modem was messed up. Now it would seem I have a successful connection to wifi, which I couldn't get.
As great as that is, I still can't get Odin to pick up my phone. Any thoughts?
Was that kb2 package heimdall?
If so you have to uninstall the heimdall driver and reinstall the Samsung driver.
Either way I would reinstall the Samsung drivers but it is a must if you used heimdall add the drivers conflict.
Alright. That's done, but I'm on I896UXJL1-stock now, and I'm pretty sure in doing that through Odin 1.85 I unrooted the phone. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's why I used the ATT stuff, because it auto-rooted the phone.
So it would seem I have some issues to work through. I can either root my phone and be stuck with ATT firmware that I don't want, or I can unroot the phone and use Rogers stock and hope for the best with Firefly.
This is by far the most confusing computer-related issue I've ever worked with. There's too many options to play with and they all work differently.
Why would you be stuck on at&t firmware? Why do you need to root before flashing firefly? Why don't you root Rogers stock?
you're confusing everyone involved lol
Okay, so maybe I'm a little in the dark on the rooting issue. Basically, I'm going back to Firefly because I thought it was amazing. Fast, responsive, and no issues I can think of on my phone.
I'm rooting the phone because it's my understanding that in order to spoof my location in order to get certain apps (Google Music), I'd need to be rooted.
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this done, and my biggest problem, to reiterate, is that I have about fifteen different Roms, all either ATT or Rogers, three different Pit files, and so, so many Odin programs.
I'm now on 2.1 with that Toronto stock firmware, in order to work around the 3e error in recovery mode when trying to put on Clockwork. Unfortunately, now I'm getting some other error in regards to the Update.Zip file, Status 7.
I apologize for confusing people, but I promise I've read as much as I can about the tools I'm using, but I'm running in circles, flashing back and forth trying to find solutions.
you do not need to root before flashing the rom. it will be rooted after and then you can do what you need to do to get your apps working if you need to (firefly contains canadian locale cause its based off of rogers froyo firmware) changing stuff before you flash so apps can work is a waste of time as the flash will overwrite the firmware you just tweaked.
now, since your on eclair i'm attaching an update.zip that contains cwm, put it in the root folder of your sdcard boot into recovery select reinstall packages twice and it should boot into cwm where you can then flash firefly.
You're a frickin' genius, Studa. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I've got Firefly on thanks to that Update file, and I'm getting the ball rolling on everything else. If I wasn't so broke, I'd donate, but I hope my thanks is good enough. I really appreciate the help. It cut through twelve hours of stupid.
