I have them made from a previous Droid but how do I set them in the Captivate? I had an Epic 4G before this phone and it was simple. Go to contact, edit contact, assign ring tone. This phone dosen't have this option(at least the option dosen't show in the settings). Is it an AT&T vs Sprint thing or do I need my contacts in certain area?
EDITED: Ok...found my answer as to why I cant but dont know how to fix.....seems that you can not asign ringtones to contacts that are linked in some way...example... I have all my contacts linked to gmail for back up and to facebook.....but AT&T numbers that are not linked to anything, I can assign...now to figure out how to un-link my contacts from google and facebook
When you edit a contact, did you scroll down far enough? There is a field to change the ringtone.
ok...this is a bunch of crap...If I am doing this right...the only way to get a ringtone for a contact is for the contact to reside on your phone...not link to any other account....so, with that said, I reset my phone to factory defaults(had to in order to get rid of the Google linked account). Then applied ringtones to certain people just for a test. Presto...ring tones...Ok...now that that is done, I want to re-download my apps from the market. Guess what? You need to link your phone to Google to get them...so what happens?...all my contacts are now linked to Google automatically and can't assign ring tones again....Is this right...am I the only one?...I cant believe that Google and Facebook contacts take precidence over contacts that are directly on the phone?...is there anyone out there that can correct me if I am wrong?
From what I can tell you have to have the contact saved on your phone to assign a ringtone.
You can make a new contact on your phone and then link it to an existing Google contact. Then when you edit the contact you can set a ringtone. At the top of the Edit page there will be tabs to switch between the Google contact and the contact on the phone. You have to edit the contact on the phone.
There are apps that can export all of your contacts and save them as phone contacts. That seems to be the quickest way of doing this if you're going to assign more than 2 or 3 different ringtones.
Try it with one first to make sure it works for you.

Ok, I know that title is a little convoluted, but I don't know how else to put it. Basically when entering the recipients name in the "To" input field, some contacts don't show up. Example: Say I wanna send a text to Brian Knoll. I open Messaging app and start typing his name in the TO box, I get Brian Davids, or Briannna, or Brittany, but no Brian Knoll. I'd have to back out, search for his contact via phone search or contacts app and then compose a text that way. This is the same for about half my contacts and is NOT rom specific. I know it's not SIM contacs screwing it up either, cause I can store a brand new contact and have the same thing happen when trying to find it. What gives???
I also noticed this problem. In fact, I only get listed those contacts which have been synced from Facebook but not the ones comming from the sim card...

Click to collapse
I think as far as your problem is concerned, You can fix that in contact settings > import/export > import SIM contacts.
make sure its saved as a mobile number and not home or work it won't add a home number cause you shouldn't be textin a house
Easy fix.
Go to brian first and then compose the text message.
so i delete #'s i no longer need out of my phonebook but when i go thru my phonebook from handcent or messanger - the phone # still shows up. Is there some sort of secondary book the program is looking in when you want to send an SMS/MMS?
If they are on your friends list on facebook and they have their number posted it will do this. Otherwise I'm not sure why it would.
no - my fB isnt set to sync nor are the numbers im talking about even on my Fb friends list...
its numbers i've once added, then i went thru and deleted old #'s i dont call so theyre not longer in my phonebook but when i go to text message someone, it shows up in my "text phonebook"
this is very interesting. perhaps its related to the "wrong recipient" thread over in the general forum. its gotta be a bug no matter what, right?
this happened to me a while back when I tried to delete my ex.
what worked for me was when I logged into my google account (i logged into voice)
and clicked contacts, and deleted her from there. that worked for me, but idk.
Try to check whether you have included the respective folder/label of contacts in your contact list. Perhaps the messaging app searches through all contacts regardless of label.
Contact list will only show those contacts that have the labels you have chosen. Perhaps the deleted contacts got moved to a [Trash] label?
I'm thinking this is more of an issue with the People app than with the widget, but here is my issue.
Just rooted my wife's Hero from 1.5 and flashed Fresh ROM 2.3.3. Previously, in the HTC people widget she was able to add two different contacts for me, one to call work and one to call cell. I'm guessing she did this through adding both contacts to the favorites group that was used for the widget.
When adding the new widget there is only one contact for me, and when editing the favorites group there is no option to add a second entry for me with a different contact method.
Without adding a completely separate contact for me with the second phone # is there any way to fix this?
Thanks.
Check to see that the two Contacts of you aren't linked together as one. Sometimes the People app will automatically Link two contacts that have the same name, and you may need to go manually un-link them. Look at the very top right of the Contact screen
Does anyone know of a straight forward way to set a ringtone for all numbers that are not listed in your contacts?
I am going to try out the free app Call&SMS Filter but it would be good if there was a way to do it without a third party app. All my contacts are from Google so there isn't even an easy way to set a ringtone for all of them as I'd need to setup an empty contact for all of their names, link it and then add the ringtone there.
The only way I can think of is to set ringtone "A" as the global ringtone under settings. Then go into your contact list and then set a custom ringtone for each contact. That way if a contact calls it reverts to the custom ringtone, and if a non contact calls you get standard ringtone "A". If you have a lot of contacts that could take quite a while to do. Thats the only way I can think of doing it, unless there is some app that would do it.
ok so I know the captivate won't allow me to choose which gmail contact groups to sync (although other phones do, wtf), and I've told it to only display contacts with phone numbers, and I've also chosen to display only a certain group.
my problem is when choosing a contact to send and sms to it shows ALL contacts so I have a bazillion sale****@craigslist.com to sort through... using the search allows me to find what I want, but as a bit of a perfectionist it bothers me that this one little hiccup is left in my setup.
is there anything to be done about this? I'm ok using a different contacts program, or even a different sms program, so long as this issue is resolved.
