Set a ringtone for all numbers not in contacts? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a straight forward way to set a ringtone for all numbers that are not listed in your contacts?
I am going to try out the free app Call&SMS Filter but it would be good if there was a way to do it without a third party app. All my contacts are from Google so there isn't even an easy way to set a ringtone for all of them as I'd need to setup an empty contact for all of their names, link it and then add the ringtone there.

The only way I can think of is to set ringtone "A" as the global ringtone under settings. Then go into your contact list and then set a custom ringtone for each contact. That way if a contact calls it reverts to the custom ringtone, and if a non contact calls you get standard ringtone "A". If you have a lot of contacts that could take quite a while to do. Thats the only way I can think of doing it, unless there is some app that would do it.

Unique ringtone for private numbers?

I want to set a different ringtone for callers with no number displayed. (In my case this is how my work contact me.) Is it possible to set a calltone for callers diplayed as a "private" that is different to all the others. Thnx.
BUMP
Will this work?
If I enter the text "private" in a phone number field of an outlook contact will the Kaiser match it with the Caller ID "private" that displays when an unlisted number rings? I can then assign it a unique ringtone.
Nope. It won't. Not sure on how to make tones assign to private/unknown. Your work calls you from private numbers? Who are you double O 7? lol jk
Third Party Software.....
Either Photocontacts or smartfilter. Google either. Both will do what you want. Photocontacts has more features and options.
Shame I have to add and buy a third party utility to do such a simple thing. Without installing these apps.... they appear to do forwarding and blocking according to caller ID. None of their blurbs mention custom ringtones for private/unknown though?
Is there not some way this could be achieved from in the registry.
is there an update? is there anyway to assign ringtones to private callers?
I had wondered about this issue myself. What I have done is set up S2U2 and Ringo. I have a picture of "The Stig" as s2u2 allows you to dislay your own gif image for unknown callers. In Ringo I set up all my contacts into the correct categories and so the default caller basically works as unknowns, which incidentally you can set to your own mp3/wav etc...
My solution to this was to assign tones to different categories using ToneManager, so that anyone not assigned to a category (i.e. private or unknown numbers) use the default ringtone.
Hope this helps
6 months on.... Just bumping this up.
Has any one yet found a non-third-party-software way of achieving a distinctive ringtone for callers with no number displayed. (In my case this is how my work contact me.) Surely this must be possible.
Workaround?
I have distintive numbers for people who I DO know about / reveal their number to me. For everyone else that comes up as "unknown" or "withheld" it plays the default ringtone, assigned in Sounds & Notifications.
Works for me as my company always calls me from a withheld number.

[Q] Anyone heard of an app like this?

I was wondering if anyone has heard of an app that can select ringtones for contacts in your contact list and have another ringtone for calls not in your contact list? I know programs that I can select ringtones for each contact but not everyone in my contacts list gets their own ringtone so I was looking for a program that will give me the option to have a different ringtone for calls from people not in my contacts. Thanks for any help anyone can provide
Select a default ringtone and then assign a different ringtone to all the callers who are in your contacts, then the default ringtone will ring for anyone not in your contacts. The OS itself can do this. You don't need a separate app.
i dont think he wants to go through his contacts one by one to do this. i have over 200 contacts in my phone and going through each one would be a ball ache. to create one tone and use it for all contacts with a simple setup is what he is after.
You can email this dev to add ring tone mod to their app.
Market > call filter by telemarks.co.jp
open app
select control specified numbers
press call filters
press menu > add list
select input = numbers not in contacts
press the [numbers not in contacts] in the filter list to select action > silent mode
now if your device is setup to vibrate during incoming call, it should just vibrate when a call comes in that is not in your contact list.

Help: cant get contact ringtones

I have them made from a previous Droid but how do I set them in the Captivate? I had an Epic 4G before this phone and it was simple. Go to contact, edit contact, assign ring tone. This phone dosen't have this option(at least the option dosen't show in the settings). Is it an AT&T vs Sprint thing or do I need my contacts in certain area?
EDITED: Ok...found my answer as to why I cant but dont know how to fix.....seems that you can not asign ringtones to contacts that are linked in some way...example... I have all my contacts linked to gmail for back up and to facebook.....but AT&T numbers that are not linked to anything, I can assign...now to figure out how to un-link my contacts from google and facebook
When you edit a contact, did you scroll down far enough? There is a field to change the ringtone.
ok...this is a bunch of crap...If I am doing this right...the only way to get a ringtone for a contact is for the contact to reside on your phone...not link to any other account....so, with that said, I reset my phone to factory defaults(had to in order to get rid of the Google linked account). Then applied ringtones to certain people just for a test. Presto...ring tones...Ok...now that that is done, I want to re-download my apps from the market. Guess what? You need to link your phone to Google to get them...so what happens?...all my contacts are now linked to Google automatically and can't assign ring tones again....Is this right...am I the only one?...I cant believe that Google and Facebook contacts take precidence over contacts that are directly on the phone?...is there anyone out there that can correct me if I am wrong?
From what I can tell you have to have the contact saved on your phone to assign a ringtone.
You can make a new contact on your phone and then link it to an existing Google contact. Then when you edit the contact you can set a ringtone. At the top of the Edit page there will be tabs to switch between the Google contact and the contact on the phone. You have to edit the contact on the phone.
There are apps that can export all of your contacts and save them as phone contacts. That seems to be the quickest way of doing this if you're going to assign more than 2 or 3 different ringtones.
Try it with one first to make sure it works for you.

Caller Groups, Selective Ringing

I had a Nokia a long time ago that had caller groups and I had a "VIP" setting that would allow only people selected to ring and txt with an audio report. Everyone else was silent. I would set this ringer profile when I was going to sleep and anyone who I didn't want to wake me couldn't and everyone who I wouldn't mind hearing from could. I want my girlfriend to wake me if she needs anything but I don't want to hear from anyone else
Is there a way to do this on the N1?
Thanks
Ringtone can be selected per person.
Apps like "Contact GroupU" allow to set ringtone over a group, and to modify groups - default Contacts app doesn't have the feature (but it's accessible from Gmail).
You could use something to change your default ringtone to "silent" on demand, and this way your ringtone for VIP persons would remain the only one.

Set the ringtone for a certain contact to "none"

Recently I tried to set a custom ringtone to certain contacts to "none" (i.e., when those contacts call me I don't want the phone to play any ringtone). I did this via: contacts - (selected a contact) - edit contact - set ringtone - none - OK. Then saved the changes.
The problem is that this setting does not apply. I then tried changing to any other ringtone specific to a contact and the setting changed properly. So, it seems that only the "none" setting is not working. I am running Android 6.0.1, build MOB30I, stock/non-rooted. Can anyone assist?
Create a silent ringtone in Audacity on your PC, and use that for those contacts you don't want to hear notifications from. It's a workaround, but should do what you want it to do.
