[Q] My phone is bricked isn't it =[ - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I was attempting to do a odin fix and well for some reason automatic updates decides to shut down my computer. Now if i plug in my phone, or power it on it shows me a phone ..... (caution sign).....Computer. I cant do anything is there a fix. I've been trying to access download mode, or recovery, but neither are working.

Did you buy it from AT&T and are within 30 days? Take it back and blame Kies and Windows update, don't know what happenned.

There are several different combinations to try, so I have read. Look at this thread first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911. If that doesn't work for you, try searching the captivate general, and the captivate android development forums for the term bricked. I've read that it is almost impossible to brick these phones. Hope it helps.

I will have to start a thread regarding this. But people really need to stop saying it is impossible or even almost impossible to brick these phones as an owner of a bricked Captivate I assure you it is quite possible to brick them. However rule of thumb has been if you get something on the screen you can usually recover it there are a bunch of permutations you will have to try (Hold power and vol. up button and plug-in the USB cable is one example). Unfortunately the best thing to do is read through the Odin3 One-Click thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I do not know all the recovery button holding permutations. You will see a lot of suggestions and examples of your situation (hint: search brick). Good Luck but I think you can recover your phone from this, others have

I trashed my Captivate by running an odin update and thinking it screwed up so I pulled the cable. Twice. After the second time pressing/holding power did nothing. I mean nothing, plug in usb cable.. nothing. ADB on the computer said device not present.
Remove battery, sim and micro sd card.
Open Odin on the computer.
Plug in the cable to the phone, insert battery, then hold in VOL UP AND DOWN. Keep these held in as you plug in the usb cable to the computer.
Phone enters download mode and is registered in Odin.
Profit.

It only works if the bootloader is intact.

[Q] did i brick it?

So this may have been dumb.. or actually it was very dumb.
But i was using the odin one click downloader, and it got stuck at setting pit file so i figured i'd unplug the phone and pull the battery to reset it. However now it won't turn on
Did i brick it?
Thanks
Probably not. Try using this method to put the device back in Download mode.
Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
Insert the battery
Hold both Volume buttons, don't touch the power button
Plug in the USB cable and continue holding both Volume buttons

I have to say.. I LOVE YOU!
Haha, i went to bed with the iphone all setup thinking i would have to use it. Thank you soo much!!
*Edit* I still love you, but do you have any advice on how to get odin one click to recognize it?
The phone goes into download mode now, but the computer says it's an un recognized device so odin doesn't see it
*Edit2* Ahh i got it, What i did was switch USB ports while it was in download mode and somehow that got the computer + odin to recognize it
Thanks again Neurp, you saved me and my phone
Trust samsung device are one of the hardst devices to actually brick, and by bricking i mean black screen, no download mode, no recovery mode, if you can access any of these 2 or your able to see the 'att world phone" screen which is the bootloader, your device IS NOT brick't =], most people tend to get confused with the word "brick" in mobile device

[Q] Captivate Bricked. No 3 Button Combo. PLEASE HELP

PLEASE HELP ME!
I was trying to flash back to stock but odin3 just sits at factoryfs.rfs
Read a different thread which said that you should unplug and replug into a different USB port. Tried that however got an immediate black screen.
The phone doesnt show the battery symbol when plugged into a charger.
If i can get into download mode I think I can flash stock with Odin3 because I changed the programs privileges to admin and turned compatibility mode on with WinXP SP2
Essentially NOTHING comes up on the screen, regular boot up is out of the question and I cant even get into download or recovery mode. 100% dead regardless of what i do.
I've tried the 3 button download mode trick. I held Volume down / up / POWER before plugging in the USB and Battery....I've tried everything and nothing is getting this thing out of a complete brick.
I've also read that you can make a wire and solder pins 4 and 5 of the micro wire with a 301K ohm resistor in between to simulate the 3 button trick...But im skeptical it'll work at all. (Going to try it soon anyways).
My question is.. What else can I try to get this to Download mode??
PLEASE HELP.
anyone ? any information is appreciated.
I have the same problem just like you.
I am waiting for the solution too.
As I know there was no way now.
u might have to try doing the solderless trick..ill reserach and see what i find though
Give the JIG (301k resistor between pin 4+5) more credit!
Here's a parts list and solderless directors to make a jig:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512
there are other ways to get into download mode.
Have you tried just holding the up and down volume buttons and then plugging in, or the adb method (adb reboot download)?
I have the exact same problem. my phone came back for a second with portrait mode and usb connectivity. usb worked on my desktop computer, i freaked out and ran to my laptop (that had odin one click, and mod software loaded on it) and plugged it in. while plugging it in to my laptop i noticed a bright blue spark on the usb connector wich i already had plugged into my phone and immediatly lost usb connectivity and went back to being stuck in landscape mode.... i wonder if this has something to do with it?
i had a similar problem and really thought my phone was bricked. I ended up having to use another computer to enter download mode. i installed the drivers first from the odin thread and held the up and down volume keys and plugged in the cable and it came back to life. This was after 24 hours or so of trying every possible combination and getting nothing but a black screen using my original computer.
When I connected the i897 and computer, there was nothing happened. No charging shows. No every modes. the screen have no response.

IT WORKED!
so i gave the 301K resistor and it worked beautifully!
- Fired up to download mode
- Opened odin (as admin and with compatibility on WinXP SP2)
- Plugged it in
- Clicked start on Odin.
apparently the new Galaxy S's dont have a hardware 3 button reset to get into download mode.

[Q] captivate won't boot after Axura clockwork

Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hmy captivate died after flashing Axura using clockwork
now I can not boot up the phone, unplug the battery for 15 Min and put it back but still the same can not boot up the phone....
please help
You need to figure out a way to get into Download Mode, use ODIN, and flash back to JF6. Once you have JF6 running, you can flash whatever rom you want again.
If you search, you'll see a bunch of posts on the different methods to get to Download Mode.
Goodluck.
Yes, I know if I get download mode I can flash whatever rom, but the problem is that the phone completely dead nothing shown in the screen, I have tried the following
1- try the combination of Vol down + Power
2- try the combination of Vol up + Vol Down + Power
3- try Vol down and then connect USB
4- try Vol down + Vol Up and then connect USB
all these while opening ODIN
also I tried this on both windows 7, and windows XP.
do you have any other suggestions to do.
please help
Still have the problem, need heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp please
How did it exactly die? It'd be useful for people who may know a solution. I've heard of JIG a few times.
you get the little home lights on the bottom of the phone to light up at least?
Also.. does the computer recognize the device?
If not and it's completely black screen and you don't even feel it vibrate while booting? Its toast.
But.. try doing the battery/sim card pull - hold down both volume buttons plug in the USB and jam in the batter and see if that works.
Or.. to the ATT warranty center you shall go.
I was flashing Axura rom using clockwork recovery, and after complete the installation and start reboot this back screen comes on, now not booting at all
Odin not recognize the phone, or even the computer does not detect any connected device,
I tried pull the battery, wait for 15 min then connect the USB, hold vol up, down and power keys then put the battery back while holding these three keys nothing happen, the screen still black and the computer not detect it.
I tired all ways but nothing works with me.
Now I think it is complete died, Even I tried the hair dryer trick but nothing works.
some posts talk about JIG
How this JIG works and how to do it?

I followed JIG solution, connect resistants of 301K on pin 4,5 on mini usb head, nothing works still black screen, no at&t log nothing
help any new suggestion
try charging the phone for a few hours, if possible try a different battery.
also you may be in download mode with a black screen. i had a bad crash once from too much overclock or a corrupted kernel flash with the manhatten project 1.6ghz kernel. it corrupted the image files for bootup and download mode, my startup screen was garbage and had a black screen for download mode. but download mode still worked. start odin, it may still show device connected.
I did connect the JIG for 10 sec then disconnect it, then connect the phone to the computer while ODIN open, but nothing happen the computer still not detecting the phone, also the screen still black, it does not even any sign of responding except it get heated when connect it to charger.
guys as posted in other thread, will reward 75 US$ for who will help me getting my phone back to life
if you got the phone through at&t, you might as well just go exchange it for a new one. the people there won't be able to determine if you've voided your warranty if they can't boot your phone either.
sorry I did not got the phone from AT&T, I bought it from Ebay so I can not send it back to them

Using your computer and usb cable, remove the battery from the phone. Plug the pc side of the cable into your pc. Put the battery back in the phone. Hold the volume up and volume down buttons. While holding the buttons, plug in the phone side of the usb cable and continue holding. You should be in download mode within a few moments. View my clip for a how-to video session on this...
Reply if this worked. It SHOULD work as you have soft bricked and this is a way of entering download mode during a soft brick of the phone.

Did you try the volume button method with plugging in the USB cable into the phone while it's plugged into the computer? It sounds like you are just doing the volume buttons plus power button method. The JiG is for HARD bricks which doesn't sound like it's what you have. Although it will work for SOFT bricks also.

how long did you hold the buttons up and down after you connected the cable? iv held it for 2 mins and nothing!
Ugh. This is the way to do the button combo:
Step 1 remove the battery, open odin3 the one click jh6.
Step 2 plug in the usb and hold the volume up, volume down, and power.buttons.
Step 3 put in the battery and release the power button but keep holding the volume up/down buttons.
Step 4 press download. This puts the phone in download mode. I found this method when I had a soft brick. Umyou don't need a jig since you can still boot to the white screen. This will work.

I will try this method, as I am in the same boat as the others here. I have already placed my order for the USB Jig but am hoping that this method will work.
However, under step 4, you indicate that you "press download." What do you mean by this? Where is the "download" button? On odin3, the only buttons I saw were start and master clear. Is the download button an option on the Captivate?
To my knowledge, there is no "Download" button on ODIN or a Captivate in a semi-bricked state.
Edit:
If those directions don't work, you might also try a method I've had success with.
1. Remove battery, SIM card, and MicroSD (if you have one) from the phone
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone having no power source
3. Hold Vol Up/Down, don't let go
4. Insert battery
5. If it worked, in a few seconds you should see Download Mode

I posted some suggestions in this thread...
good luck, dont give up
Axura CE RC2.1 w/ excalibur 2.1.6, ugjk4 modem, Voodoo, BlackFroyo theme
I think Im really screwed I have done everything that has been posted previosly and nothing seem to work. as soon I connect to my computer odin3 dose not do anything it's as though nothing is connected and my phone goes to that empty battery with the frozen loading star or what ever its called, it also does that when I connect it to the AC outlet.
Still waiting on the jig to arrive I think thats my last hope!
Why doesn't anyone use adb to get into download? The only time you HAVE use the 3 button is if you get phone!Pc screen. If your phone can get to the att screen, open command prompt, change directory to adb tools location, and type adb reboot download. Do all this before you hook your phone up to the computer. When you're ready connect phone to pc, turn it on, right after you see the att splash screen and hear that your phone is connected press enter.

how do you use a adb to get into download mode? is there a link you can hook me up with instructions I would really appreciated it.

Odin not recognizing phone

Im trying to flash my phone to 2.2 *captivate*, but everytime I put my phone off, take out batter and sim card, then put battery in, hold the two volume buttons on the left and plug the usb cable in, odin does not recognize it. It is only recognized when I put my phone on. (drivers installed) Pleae answer, Ive spend so long on this. Also, when I try to go into download mode, the yellow guy doesnt show up, it just goes to a battery charging state
Ensure that phone USB has debug enabled in the development menu under applications in settings... And hold the buttons, insert USB cable until the phone goes into download mode. Yellow triangle... Odin should then see the port...
Are you using original factory cord?
Have you tried all usb ports?

Yes Im using the original factory chord. Ive tried all of the usb ports except one. Trying it right now. It is still only recognized when the phone is on though.

Recovery our download mode?
Recovery
volume up and down and power. Wait till at&t screen comes on let go
download mode, needed for odin
Remove bat, sim, and external sd. Put bat back in, put cover on. Hold volume up and down hold, put usb in . Should be in download mode in a second or two

My computer wouldnt recognize my phone either after a while... it turned out to be the crappy samsung usb cable. I tried a different cable and everything was fine. If you have a different usb cable try it! Maybe that will solve it. It did for me. Good luck.
my phone is recognized by the computer, just not when it is off
Sounds like you have the"no 3 button recovery"issue. You should be able to use adb with phone on to boot into recovery, just be ready before you get carried away and get/make a jig as you will likely need it at some point to get you out of a bad flash where adb commands are not possible.
So... That didn't work
So i am having the problem with ODIN not seeing my phone when in download mode, although it can when it is on. I really want to get CM7 on my phone and do my own boot animation/splash screen. Yet I can't seem to find any good information as to how to fix this.
I am not a NOOb at this nore am I dev. but this is something new that no one has seemed to be able to fix.
If anyone knows how to fix this that would be awesome, or if any dev with a fair amount of credit would want so give this a go that would be awesome.
Hoping to get some ideas...
I highly recommend buying a jig. I use mine all the time to go to download. I have softbricked many times and it has saved me.
