I was trying to do some mod thing, didnt really know what i was doing and figured id try it anyways, lol so yeah I'm an idiot, my hero is stuck as the first screen, just says HTC in green with the white background, apparently I formated the system and cache folder when i was in recovery mode as it instructed then i tried to do something else, and i dunno what happened, so yeah I'm an idiot.. if anyone could help me thatd' be great. =)
What were u trying to flash and what recovery are u/ using.?
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions
What's ur recovery? And what rom are u using?
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
ummm, not exactly sure, all ive done was root it using theunlockr.com's tutorial
Well after u root u should flash a custom recovery I recommend RA 1.6 u can find it on hear fairly easy with a little searching after that u should flash a custom rom I recommend CM6 stable this will then give u root access root access is only achieved by flashing a custom rom the mod u were trying to flash is used to mod ur recovery that u have already flashed to the phone so ur still ok ur just stuck in a kinda boot loop I think tell me do u know of or have adb access
Edit
You can find the rom and the recovery image fairly easy I can't post a link I'm on my cell
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
i installed the android sdk and did the adb devices thing to see if it would show up and it didnt so idk what to do
Are u able to get to the recovery??
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
yeah i was just on it a second ago somehow, lol idk how but yeah it did and i remembered it said clockwork or something like that
Easiest thing to do is just run the Sprint 2.1 RUU found here. Plug your phone into USB and your computer, then run that .exe from your PC and it should return your phone back to straight stock. Then you can re-root and start over (Make sure you fully read about what you're doing next time )
Go back to recovery wen ur there plug ur phone into ur computer from ur recovery menu select USB toggle and c if ur computer recognized it if it does ur in a good spot you might b able to just place a stock rom on ur SD card and flash it allowing you to access or download terminal and flash a different recovery

I just read your post but I don't think I can help. I don't have Ubuntu so I've never messed with adb in Linux. Also, I'm not using CM6 so I don't know about those other CM6 things you asked about either. Sorry, good luck tho.

Question for chromiumleaf
Plug your phone into USB and your computer, then run that .exe from your PC and it should return your phone back to straight stock. Then you can re-root and start over.
chromiumleaf, if I do this will it return my phone back to stock including getting rid of clockworkmod recovery and going back to stock recovery?
If you go back and try firerats custom partition again, follow the steps exactly up to the part where you make your notepad file...instead of 102 2 use 115 3...that should help you....try installing rom manager from the market after you re root, its a very easy to use recover for beginners, let me know if I can help further with the partitioning

Yes, running the RUU .exe will completely wipe everything on your phone including your custom recovery and even the radio if you had changed that. It will take your phone back to pure stock like it was just fresh out of the box.

ok, in the flashrec method, you most likely didnt name tell it to find the right file.. I suggest trying it again, and when you get to the backup recovery image, go to you sd card and copy that recovery-backup.img file to your desktop. Then take the Amon Ra recovery image file and rename it to recovery-backup.img and hit restore backup image. That should fix your problem.
hold on a sec, tryin that now!
thank you, i just got past that step, following your youtube vid now, ill pm you if i run into any more problems, and thank you again! I was getting sooo frustrated with that!!!!!!

ok, I hope everything turns out well
After waiting for the official AT&T froyo release with the captivate, I decided to just go ahead and flash a froyo ROM. I've decided to flash the axura ROM first since i heard good things about it.
So while I'm finishing charging my phone before the flashing, is there anything I need to keep note of before flashing so that I can prevent bricking my phone? I've read up on the forums and watched the video from connexion2005 from the post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867153.
Its pretty scary since I'm not much of a tech savy guy and this is my first android phone. Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

Backup all your apps and data with Titanium Backup. Make sure your battery is fully charged, and removing your sim and SD cards are good practice.
Have fun! You won't go back.
- Backup all your files and make a nandroid backup!
- Get Odin3 One-Click and drivers to get your phone back to stock in case you brick it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
- There may be additional precautions you can take, so read through related threads on xda.

If you've read as much as you claim to have read, then you're probably in good shape. It's really not an unsafe process as long as you have some idea of what you're doing. I was very nervous about it myself the first time, but since then I've probably flashed 20 roms without a problem.
A couple of things that I would tell you, if you aren't already aware:
1. MAKE SURE that BEFORE you flash, you can get into download mode from the phone being off using one of the methods. I'm sure you've seen the one-click flash back to JF6 (stock) that was posted - download that if you haven't. For me, removing the battery, sim, and ext sd, replacing the battery, and holding down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB works really well - just make sure Odin is running before you do that. If you do manage to brick it, you will want to be able to get to download mode and flash back to stock.
2. After moving to a custom rom, it is best to always flash back to stock before flashing a different rom; you can avoid a lot of potential problems this way.
3. After rooting your phone, backup the update.zip in /sdcard/ on your computer. Any time you flash back to stock, you can reinstall CWM really easily by just putting that update.zip back in /sdcard/ and choosing "reinstall packages" from the recovery menu again. Sometimes you may have to do it twice before it enters CWM.
4. OCLF in the market is, to me, the easiest and quickest way to root your phone, but the one click root method isn't much worse. Just a matter of preference, I guess.
Good luck! Come back if you have any problems.
EDIT: apparently two people replied while I was typing my response lol! But what they said is very good as well.
Thank you for all your help. One quick question though, do I need the android ID changer?
the biggest mistake people make is not making sure they have the button combinations to enter recovery or download. (download = hold both volume buttons own and plugging usb cable in; recovery = hold volume buttons down, then holding power until AT&T screen pops up, letting go of power but still holding both volume buttons) if either of these don't work, you must, before doing ANYTHING else, flash the stock odin one click with the button fixes; it is posted somewhere in the development forum. and no you shouldn't need the android id changer unless you want to keep the android id that your phone came with. then open the changer and click save id and flash your rom of choice. most custom roms have a script to automatically load a saved id or randomly generate one if there wasn't a saved one. good luck in all your flashing endeavors!
edit: also as bodaciousdrake mentioned previously about cwm recovery, you should always keep the update.zip that contains cwm recovery on your sd card and you'll never need to change that to something else because using cwm recovery you can flash any .zip file that you want and it does not need to be named update.zip.

Yes, you need it. Download it from the market, while on 2.1, and save your id onto your sd card. After you are on 2.2, choose Load id and it will automatically reboot.

What exactly is the point in saving the phone id? Sorry I'm kinda a noobie at this and looking up things about phone id, it seems like it just is an identifier for the phone but doesn't really provide anything.
Also, how do I get out of download mode? I've put it in download mode to make sure it works and it seem I can't get out of it... I've done the 2 volume bottons with the usb cord.
there's another thread in this forum that answers that question perfectly. also to exit download mode you need to pull the battery out.

Basically, a lot of 2.2 Roms come with the same android id, 977blah... If you don't want market issues later I would suggest that you put in your original 2.1 android id. You can always search more if that answer isn't sufficient. And yes, do a battery pull to get out of download mode.
I've master cleared but can't seem to root. Every time I try with the one click root, and I go to recovery, it said it can't find the update.zip from the /sdcard/
yep, just pull the battery. also you don't need to root to flash roms. just grab the update.zip containing clockwordmod recovery from the thread in the development forum, put it on your sd card, boot to recovery and select reinstall pacakges. after that, reboot the phone (you might have to reinstall packages again) then you'll be ib clockwordmod recovery and you'll be able to flash any rom you want without having to change the filename.

For some reason I got this too the first few times I tried to root. I then noticed that in the cmd prompt, for a split second it said failed to push update.zip or something due to privileges.
How I fixed it was ran the one-click root on windows in admin mode. It worked after that.
Thanks guys for all your help. I got it to flash the ROM and it seems I haven't bricked my phone
Thanks again
I have been looking through the threads, and havent seen what I am looking for. So hopefully i will not get flamed to bad. I tried to install mikeymikes GR12, I got through the first stage of downloading the gingerbread rom to the phone through odin, but then it went south. I lost root and was unable to get back to the download screen. I then tried to use the all in one tool to root the phone, and that put me to the recovery screen where i could not use the ok button, just the volume up and down buttons. I just managed to get the download screen to come back, but i cant get anything else to work. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go from here.
Thank you for your help
I would go back to stock first. I believe your problem lies in the bootloaders. There are two bootloaders in the beginning and if you don't have the gingerbread ones installed, you won't install gingerbread properly.
I would use DesignGears One Click Odin to go back to stock and load the Froyo drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Make sure you open up Odin first before plugging in your phone, then hit the Start button.
Once that is done, you can try again, but read about getting the GB bootloaders installed properly before you try to flash a GB ROM. Any of the GB ROM instructions should get you there. Just make sure you know all the steps before you try it again.
Good Luck!!
I don't see why you would be flamed for your question. That is what Q&A is for and you are in a bad spot. The biggest thing to remember is to be as specific as possible when you post a question. This includes what you were trying to do, what steps you took, what was the result, when did the problem occur (which step) and what you have tried to do, if anything to fix it.
One more thing. It is always possible that the USB cable is bad or that the USB port you are plugging into (on the computer) isn't working properly. You might also want to plug into a different USB port.
Sorry these posts are broken up, but as I'm coming up with ideas, I'm posting.
Here's something you should try:
(I wrote this for Team Phoenix, hence the sig.. But it works the same with every ROM. There's a link to a very nice tutorial I suggest you follow).

Me too. If we can ... Remember not all things can be recovered from so please read everything twice before ever touching your phone.
10-4. My next question is: where do I get froyo from. Kies sees my eclair version as unregistered, so it wont update. And my ota sees an update is needed, but when i tried, the area im in has crappy signal, so the update failed and now i have to wait 24 hours to do it.
Any suggestions?

Going on official froyo will get you the signature failed error (which you need the 3e recovery fix if you ever want to flash a custom ROM).
So, basically, if you want more than 2.2 official release. We suggest you don't update. If you're perfectly fine staying on 2.2 Froyo, then there's no problem lol
As for Kies, you shouldn't have any problem using Kies mini. Other than that, there is a 2.2 flash around here. I'm sure you'll find it doing a little search
I had root on my official froyo for a couple of months without a problem. Right now i cant get my phone to go into download mode, it only goes to the battery screen. If i can get to download i can make some headway

Is there an easy way to get adb without getting the sdk. I downloaded the sdk and it keeps saying i need java, when i download the java crap it says the same thing.

Haven't messed with a hero in a long time, but since you can get into h-boot, try to find a HERCIMG.zip of either the recovery or a full rom. (I see you now have an Evo, so HERCIMG.zip is just the Hero version of the PC36IMG for the Evo). Since the hero is pretty easy to root, I would suggest the entire rom to start fresh. If you are not familiar with HERCIMG.zip, put it on the root of your sd card and boot to hboot. It should then prompt you for the update.

If you are using a full rom image, you will need to re-root. Just use the one-click root for the Hero. But yes after you flash the image, I would boot just to make sure you are now good.
If just use a recovery img then try to boot into recovery and flash a very basic, maybe stock like rom.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804692
What did u name the zip file?
... it's been a common mistake with this process that people actually name "hercimg.zip", which now becomes "hercimg.zip.zip"
But u have to name it just "hercimg" since it's already a zip file.
Its just a thought ... and plz excuse me for questioning u if u did it correctly and it truly did not work.
Good luck and take care

It Worked? Great man... Glad it Helped you!
Well I bought a used Hero cdma phone, rooted it and installed cyanogenmod on it. I did all this before activating it with sprint. When I called them they were not able to get it hooked up. I didnt want to tell them it was rooted so after an hour of them trying things we gave up.
I am trying to unroot and go back to stock now to see if it will activate. I have been running into nothing but trouble.
I have been reading alot of threads here and have gotten this far...
after trying to install stock rom i got this "Verifying system type.... E:unsupported radio version, E:Update failed...."
I downgraded the radio by flashing an older recovery and turned s-off
now when i try to install hercimg.zip I get "cant open....(bad)....install aborted"
The only thing I can see is the problem is I need to be using hboot 1.41 not 1.47 that im on.
Any input, help or a point in the right direction would be super awesome!
Thanks in advance!

Neither method work for me! I have Tried everything. As far as I can tell RUU's wont work because my HBOOT is 1.47. I have tried to flash a HERCIMG I have flash year old nandroid back ups! and many other methods but the hboot won't go back to 1.41! Do you have any insite. Hercimg flash just fails and RUU give a usb connection failed. AS far as I can tell from reading other post, the new hboot starts different and screws up the ruu! Thanks in advance!
