I came from an iPhone about a month ago, and have a few questions:
1 - Is there a 'copy and paste' function like on the iPhone, so where I could copy and paste text say from a web page.
2 - Is there a way to 'zoom in' when entering text? So when I type a line on the iPhone and want to go back and correct something, I can press and hold to zoom in and find an exact place to put the cursor in. With the Captivate I can't zoom in and it's hard to get the cursor in the right place.
3 - This phone has flash support, yet there are still multiple websites I go to (try Taco Bueno) use flash and the flash icon is still displayed. Do I not have the latest version, is there a way to get it outside of just waiting for Froyo.
Thanks for all your help!
#1 - For copy and paste from a website, you need to press the MENU button, then MORE, then SELECT TEXT. Then on the website, highlight the test with your finger and it will copy and paste it to the clipboard.
#2 - This is a little more convoluted. If you're using the Samsung keyboard, long press on the ?123 key and it will bring up some cursor buttons. You can use them to move the cursor to where you want it. Or you can just press the line of text where you want the cursor and it may take a couple of tries, but it places it fairly well for me.
#3 - Not 100% sure about this one. I think the flash support is limited and not complete.
Hope this helps!

Yes, depending on the exact program you are using, pressing the menu button or long pressing on the screen will allow you to do this.

if you use the Swype keyboard, swyping from the swype logo to the SYM button will bring up a hidden menu where you can maneuver and highlight around the input you currently have focus on. It's very handy for changing misspellings and such.

Not currently. Any website that requires Flash 10.1 is only available with a Froyo ROM. There is a rumor flying around somewhere that someone managed to port Flash 10.1 to Eclair, but it's highly unstable.

My text in bold.
Let's say someone sends me a tracking number in an email, how do I copy that and paste it into a search box in the browser?
I don't care for the spelling correction thing on the swype keyboard, and the samsung keyboard doesn't have it at all, is there another keyboard that I can download?

when i place a phone call my normal procedure is:
1: press the green phone button
2: slide the keyboard out
3: begin typing a few letters of the name
4: use the arrow key on the keyboard to scroll down to the persons name <--- this is very important
5: hit return and talk
i am finding that i am unable to use the arrow keys to scroll down to select a contact on the Tilt as opposed to the HTC 6800. remember, i'm already have the kb open at this point and would prefer to just continue using it.
this then requires me to pull out the stylus or try and nail tap the contacts name from the list that appears.
it seems to only way to scroll through is to select Contacts first, start typing a few letters then scroll down and click the name then scroll some damn more and tell the phone to call. this strikes me as gratuitious.
has anyone else experience this annoyance and if so, has anyone found a solution?
i tried replacing the dialer with the touch dialer but it seems to simply skin the same lame functionality.
please advise.
I understand you want to use the kb at this point, but how hard is it to just raise your left thumb up 1.5" and use the D-pad?
I can duplicate the problem, but I've got a similar "OK... But..." comment.
Why use the keyboard? When the phone pops up, start tapping the numbers associated with the letters in the name and it'll intelligently start filtering the list. Then use a finger or the D-pad to select the one you want.

ok - i had never really done that. im just so comfortable typing on the qwerty kb that that has always been the method i have used which worked up until this phone.
only irritant i can find with the dialpad method is there is no space key for first letter first name first letter last name.
i can live with it i guess but its not nearly as bling when yer tapping on the dial pad like every other phone out there instead of using your kick ass slide out keyboard.
the habit may have transfered from my days with a treo where you simply type the name and dial.
very convenient.
I downloaded a hex editor and a rom and loaded the rom onto the hex editor.
But that kind of stuff is far above me.
I'm trying to edit the keyboard mapping, i need to switch some keys around.
I have the tilt, i would really like someone experienced to help me with this because my keyboard is basically useless right now, and ill have to buy a new phone if i cant fix it.
is there not a cab file to change from the tilt to the keyboard mapping you require?
The answer is...(drum roll please)..YES!
use the forum search option for "tilt keyboard fix" and you will be pleasantly surprised.
plz remember that unlike your girlfriend search will always be there for you. ;-)

lol i know theres that fix i just wasnt sure if it was tilt to kaiser one he required lol
no its not the keyboard fix i know about that. My issue is unique, i need to remap some of my letters. I'm fairly certain the issue involves modifiying a rom, it doesn't matter which, and to do this i would have to use a hex editor.

what keys do you need to remap and maybe someone will know a fix.
ok my k,n, i m, and period keys are unresponsive. this is a hardware issue, ill explain further if u want. this makes the keyboard quite useless without these keys functioning.
I never use my arrow keys so I would like to map each faulty letter key (K,n,i,n,.) to a corresponding arrow, and maybe the "ok" or "tab" button.
basically when i press left arrow, the letter p would pop up...etc
i would be truly gratified if u guys helped me fix this, because ill get a cheap unbreakable phone if the tilt wont fully work. Its been really frustrating,
how old is your kaiser?
do you have a warranty on it still?
could be easier to have it replaced.
well thats where i mentioned i could go into depth further. I cracked my screen, and replaced it myself. In the process I accidently nicked the side of the ribbon wire connecting the keyboard to the main unit. This resulted in those 5 keys becoming unresponsive.
I got the phone about 6 months ago, but the warranty was voided when i took the phone apart to replace the screen.
AE Button Mapper use google..... "Not AE Button Plus"
ok i downloaded it and got it installed but i have no clue how to use it.
theres some buttons to reassign keys however u have to press the key you want to reassign and that it not possible being that those keys are disconnected.
ok little update, i think the AEK program will work, however the first step is it has to create a chart by logging all the keys. You have to press all the keys individually and it logs them with a four digit number. For example pressing the letter "d" logs key 0044. Once all the keys are logged you can type them up in a text document and mix and match accordingly.
My obstacle is that i cannot press my keys that are unresponsive, for them to be logged. I tried to find a pattern by pressing keys around these and saw nothing that made any sense.
I'm not sure if the numerical values attached are standard for every application in the phone, or specific to the AEK program. I can't find a thread, that would list the value for those letters i can't press.
Does anyone know if there is a chart with all the values assigned to each key of the tilt?
Snowman, give me a link to this AEK program and I'll use it to log all my keys on my tilt, then perhaps we can compare them to what you have and hopefully get the missing codes for you
Moved to General.
Hex Editing a ROM file won't get what you need. I've seen people trying to patch the keyboard driver for this, but no success. Sorry, couldn't be more help .

In the new froyo release, when you hold down over a letter key and swipe up above the keyboard, a row of numbers and commonly used punctuation appears. You no longer need to switch to the number board to type numbers!
I haven't seen this mentioned in any reviews or commentary about FroYo. I can't be the only one to notice this, can I?
I saw it somewhere on the web, some sort of review. Don't remember where though.

This was mentioned several times in one of the thousands of "what's different in FroYo" threads that popped up the day following its "release" (escape is more likely, it seems).
You can also change keyboard language sets by swiping sideways on the space bar
Oh. Well, I wasn't lurking on the XDA nexus one forums then, I've only just started since I got my Nexus One about three days ago. Before that, I was getting my FroYo news from places like engadget, androiddog, etc.
Thanks for the response, though. XD
the .com button is missing from the keyboard when in the browser too, very annoying...

Don't forget that the basic punctuations are above the keyboard after you type a full word too. And the fact that if you type an unknown word in the dictionary, you can tap the grey word above the keyboard and it will say "<-- tap again to add to dictionary"
That's one thing that bugged me is having to hold down the textbox, scroll down, select add to dictionary, push ok and go back to the app before. They got that idea from the HTC_IME ^_^
I also noticed that if you long press the period (.) or the emoticon keys a popup will show more of the symbols / emoticons.
I'm not sure if this was new to Froyo or if this was also in eclair.
anyone noticed that now the keyboard is more responsive, I can type very fast now... I don't need skp.
I wonder if that is due to JIT compiler or if they have made other changes like adding muti-touch?
If I type and hold down both keys it looks like it now registers both correctly (except it waits until one finger is lifted to recognize the second letter)
I think this is different from eclair which wouldn't handle the second letter correctly.

+1
The new method may be easier to understand, but it
adds an (unnecessary) extra tap to get the job done.

Both of these are just from 2.1, not new.
Thanks for clarifying those Rusty. I guess I wasn't using the keyboard enough in 2.1.
Meh. Swype.
I have installed a Scandinavian keyboard, but since I can't get the keyboard choice screen to appear I can't use it. I do get the screen to appear when I click on a button after installation, but that only shows the standard Android keyboard. I think it's because I need a reboot after installation of the Scandinavian keyboard, but I can't be sure until I find a way to force this screen. On other Android units you can press and hold in a text box to get it or press and hold on the keyboard icon when the keyboard is visible, but none of those work here. I looked for an app to choose keyboard but couldn't find one. Any ideas?
If you have Twitter installed, I've found that you can long press on the text box for writing a new tweet, and get the input method popup.

This method works on the Nook Color?
-CC
Have you tried this app?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830177
It was made to allow the choice of different keyboards for different orientations, but it'll probably do what you want (kind of). Only negative is that it's an extra process that needs to run, but big deal.
sombody managed to doe in the general discussion by uninstalling the defualt keybord and replacing it with a different one or something...
here's a little app i wrote that allows you to switch soft keyboards

I've seen people have this problem as well, but I have found no solution for it.
On the NC, if you are using the gingerbread keyboard.. when you long press a key to bring up more options (ex an accent on an e) a directional popup will come up, but it will be empty. You can guess what direction to press to get a symbol, but you cannot see what you are picking.
Is there a fix for this?
Thanks
can anyone at least confirm that they don't have this issue?
hmmm
I had to reload it by following the directions on the nook portal on their front page. My GB KB Didn't work at all at first did this and everything works, just a quick adb trick and walla.
Me Too
I'm seeing the exact same issue.
I've cleaned out the /system/app/LatinIME.apk and copied gbkb-en.apk to /system/app and rebooted.
I see some of the symbols on a long press (the ones under the period for example) but not others (the numbers or the 1/3)
It's actually been this way since I rooted it a month ago. I've just been dealing with it.
