I just got a replacement Hero after mine puttered out. It was a rooted hero, and my replacement is running 2.27.651.6 like the last one so I should be able to use universal androot again. I had a few nandroid backups from the last phone. Could I just use the clockwork recovery and restore an old nandroid or is there something in it that makes it phone exclusive?
I've seen this discussed before, but I wanted to ask on the CDMA Hero forum to see if there was perhaps some intricacy within our Heros that might prevent this from being possible.
I could just manually do it, but this would save me an hour or so.
So sorry if this has been covered.
If it is the same exact phone then I guess you can, why not?

Ok so I use my phone all the time. At work it tends to get beat up. I was wondering if I buy a second g1, after I root it, can I just flash my nandroid backup from one phone to other? Then I can just transfer sim card and use beat up one at work only.
Now what about a my3g? Can I go back and forth with it and g1?
No, I really wouldnt reccomend something like that, G1 backup isnt compat with a mytouch..If you want a paper weight then fine do it.The choice is yours, all i can offer is advice.
I have nandroid backups of Cyan Build, Mamoth Pule roms, Motoblur, Soulife, and Dwang and I flash and back up to them all the time.
Of course I wipe before restoring but that's learned sense.
I wouldn't know about the MT3G I don't like that phone and I know theres the 32a and b version and that makes a difference somehow, but Idk.
I however have tried to pull files from 1 nandroid to the other [the data file] and flash that, it was working up until it tried to restore the file, but mind you I pulled it from a cyan build and tried to place it in a soul life backup.
I've really ****ed with nandroids hahaha.
Maybe if you're running a cyan build on your g1, back it up, and on the MT3G make a nandroid.
Look at both folders kinda examine em then pull the data file from the g1 folder and place it in the MT3G folder than flash.
Since Cyan roms are universal, I could see that working.
But like the guy above me stated about making paperweights, we all take risks.

You really shouldn't answer people's questions if you don't know.
OP: Yes, you can restore a nandroid backup to a different g1 with no problems. Restoring a g1 backup to an mt3g is a bad idea however, The userdata partition will probably work, but you'll essentially be flashing a g1 rom on an mt3g which will break things like wireless and bt. It will probably boot, but it's not a good plan. You're definitely not going to end up with a paperweight though.

Kind of what I thought but wasn't sure, wondering if other people have done it. Does nandroid reflash radio? I have 26I radio and death spl, only way I could see getting a brick is if I flashed a nandroid off an old radio and nandroid replaced it. (Which I don't think it does)
The mt3g does not have 32a, they are all 32b. Magics have some 32a versions. (Yes I know they are the same phon, but they are not the same phone, lol.) I can see some stuff not working, but at same time most roms are g1/mt3g compatabile having both build.prop files in rom so thought it woulkd, guess ill have to just try and find out, lol.
Last question. What if I do the duel g1 thing with sim cards in both? Would I get my email on both, but have different phone numbers?

New versions of nandroid don't touch the radio anymore.. the old ones did though.
Not sure about your last question.. I imagine you'll just get emails on both. I don't think there are any restrictions on syncing 2 android devices with the same account.
1) Is it possible to brick while rooting? (my guess is if a file is corrupt or you type something incorrectly it would)
2)Possible while flashing?
3) Has anyone ever bricked their hero?
just use the auto rooter in fresh's kitchen, its basically two clicks and your done, and use the search functionhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606172
and to answer your question ive never seen it done but guess its possible
Haha, no no I already did all this jazz, I was just wondering
1. Not likely
2. Yes, but nandroid backup will save you.
3. Stay in the CDMA section, don't wander through te Hero section, and you should be ok.
Just don't get click happy
the only way that people seem to have bricked their heros is if they try to flash the Radio or a GSM ROM. just be sure that you download your rom from this section of the site, CDMA Hero
In fact, I'd recommend you start with FRESH 1.1, found at www.geekfor.me . it's what I use and it's great.
+1 for Fresh ROM 1.1 Also, flash gbhil's Gumbo Kernel to your phone. You'll notice a disgusting increase in speed (and less lag) from your phone.
ive never seen it done but I guess its possible. always do a nandroid ( saved my ass a few times)
and in theory if you **** up with a nandroid backup then you can even wipe to stock, correct?
I'll get back to you about bricking a Hero after I've finished trying some overclocking options in the kernel
@gbhil,
hahaha.
"OH MY GOD THIS IS LIGHTNING FAST"
"Wait, whats the sizziling sound?"

send me the good stuff I've got the black tie protection plan at best buy... if I do manage to brick most likely sprit will hook me up if not then best buy will
duplicate post, sorry.
1. As long as you study up on how to root the phone you will have no problems. Flip has a kitchen that you can download and it will root your phone automatically and decrease the odds of you messing up the process. Look for it in one of the stickies.
2. Installing ROMS for the CDMA Hero won't brick the phone. Just be sure to download the CDMA only ROMS as people have bricked their phones by downloading the GSM ROMS.
3. There have been a few people who have bricked their phones due to flashing the wrong ROM (GSM). If you download CDMA ROMs you won't have any problem.
Remember to do a Nandroid backup right after rooting your phone so you can always return to state if you have problems down the road, particulary associated with Beta ROMs if you chose to install them.
**Edit** LOL, I started the reply just after the thread started and stopped to make something to eat. Come back to send the reply and find it on page 2. lol
I recently had to get a new Hero due to damage to my original one. After I rooted and did a back-up I installed cm6. After a few days I decided to go back to check for any prl updates since I forgot to check before I flashed. Once my backup was restored I noticed some ... funky-ness ... unlike usual, none of my stuff was in the right place and the Market is missing.
Discounting all this here is my question...I'm still kind of new so excuse me if this sounds really stupid... Would there be any issues in restoring a back-up from my previous hero? I saved them to my computer to keep a back-up of my back-ups.
My wife had a back (nandroid) of Fresh 2.4. When a new PRL came out I read that we can update them from that rom so I flashed back to her nandroid of Fresh and hers updated right away. I decided to take her Fresh nandroid from her sd card and put it on my sd card, it let me flash back to it BUT it would not update PRL. In fact it wouldnt do much of anything! I flashed back to cm6 download Fresh, flashed and updated with no problem. I think something in the build prop or something messes it up when putting it on a diff phone.
Hi guys, all of us usually makes a nandroid backup right after we root up phone and install ROM manager (w/ the htc sense still in).
So i have that original backup made. I was wondering, do we make a nandroid backup after we have installed the cyanogen mod? This is so incase anything happens - I can just go back to the state when i first installed my mod and not any further back. I have not heard any suggestions of doing this previously leading me to believe it will not work.
Any input is greatly appreciated !
=)
Well you really dont need one of when you first install the rom, as you can do a "factory reset" in recovery to get back to that point (rom with no apps). You should make a backup as soon as you get all your apps set up, then every few days after that, deleting older ones as newer ones are made.
It certainly won't HURT to make an immediate backup of your Sprint ROM after rooting. That's what I did. Then install the Cyanogen 6.1 mod, and enjoy it. I upgraded my sdcard to 8GB, for more room, and have probably 6 different Nandroid backups , at various points of my progress. Probably overkill, but it's not much of a chore either.
Some people might call it "fun".
Yeah, you don't *have* to do it ever, and *can* do it whenever. It just makes sense to do it before you're about to flash some new stuff, which is why that's all you see.
You can always move them off the sd card and onto your computer too. I have like 2-3 gigs worth of them on my couple comps. (You know, in case I have to go back to how my phone was on 7/15/2010 just before I flashed....something, 40 flashes ago.)

Same here. I got little nandroid bastards running around all over the place. Got em on at least 3 pc's that I know of maybe 4. Oh, and let's not forget the ones on my sd card.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Make a Nandroid once you get things up and running. If you ever need to wipe because a problem is occurring you can just restore the Nandroid and skip the setup process.
So, I'm tired of my slow ass Hero, and I want to see what it's like having CyanogenMod on it. I just wanna make sure of the process before I do this.
1. I'm going to root the phone using this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753910
2. I'm going to install a recovery image on my phone (ClockworkMod)
3. I'm going to make a Nandroid backup of my phone and then wipe it
4. I'm going to install CM6 from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731659
5. I'm going to flash gapps in order to get google market apps.
My software version is 2.31.651.7.
I just want to have this process confirmed before I do this to make sure I assembled all my information correctly.
Are there any other warnings or tips/tricks for me before I try this?
Na. I think your pretty much got enough to give it a shot. Might want to look into getting adb setup on your pc. Its very helpful. Good luck.
Yea its me again with the
Modified Hero--
Trouble installing CM6 on my cdma htc hero
Hope someone can help me here...I already rooted my CDMA HTC Hero and was in process of installing the CM6 zip file from my sd card through ClockworkMod Recovery...After rebooting, It just shows the HTC screen and it just sits there. I took the battery out and reset back to the original...I am running 2.15 update and a build of 2.32.651.2...This is my first time rooting/modifying a phone...Thanks
CM has a pretty good install guide on their wiki.
