I won't get picky about it.
But particularly I believe a world of a lot of g1 users, root and non root would really appreciate a home replacement that allows the user to do the following.
Choose which apps to show in the app drawer.
And the ability to move apps out into the "add to home screen" feature that shows up when you longpress the home screen/menu-add. In a new sub section called hidden apps/roughly around there.
So applications to prevent theft on the g1 could be hidden there over being spotted in the app drawer.
:]
Just an idea.
It is a good idea. Should post it in the dream applications+games section Though.

I was thinking that since the hero widget can't be ported to a normal g1 someone could try to use Sweeter home's layer option for an sms type widget similar to the hero.
I think it could work out very well since you can add layers and transparency.
An option to hide the apps in the tray would be nice!! I'm down for that.

Haha I know! Lately I've been bothered at having a very long app drawer, and apps like Photovault, password storage apps, and other not so commonly used apps would just fit beautifully in that new folder I'm suggesting.
I'm trying to keep this thread alive with hopes that a dev will see it and take the challenge so keep this thread alive :]
If anyone could do this, it would be the folks over at Better Android (OpenHome). In my humble opinion, they have the best home app on the market. You should forward this request to them!

I would like to, but half the time I've ever emailed better home they've done nothing but send me minimal short dissatisfying responses. But yea I use Open Home/have bought it.
Currently running Cyans build with the a hero theme or some widgets works fine enough with me.
But idk I think A home has a better go about things like this.
And of course Sweeter home is my favorite.
Yeah not sure why folders in the menu havent been figured out yet...I was almost sure someone would have cracked that missing feature long ago...
i would love a folder app or a tab app to put in the drawer,
you can hide icons, or make a whole tab of just games.
also, i wish there was a app that would lock icons on the main screens.
so nobody can move the icons unless you activate them.
anyone get my drift?
Better Android Says:
That's a good idea, although 'hiding' apps from the app drawer wont provide any securities because they are plenty to launch an app once you get pass the lock screen.

I sent him back an email saying that it would still help to weed out duplicates (like having a shortcut, and in the app drawer). I didn't get a response back on that one.
I would like to see this though.

Yea if we made a larger up roar about it and got more emails to the betterandroid guys they'd pretty much have to do it
Ive just made something like this.... you can "throw" away the application shortcuts from the app drawer and "restore" them using an added menu..

Haha rogro82 beat me to it.
I was gonna link his thread, but i guess he already linked his own.
Maybe you should provide screenshots and more details.
Thanks!
MY 2 cents
So far I love the suggestions and it sounds great.
Have you seen DxTop? I used it for a while and loved the one swipe to any of the 4 screens, maybe something like that. Maybe the ability to add more or subtract screens.
And always keep it fast.
I have heard that there is a mod that allows up to 10 screens, but I haven't found it yet. Please PM me if you know what mod I am talking about.
Thanks.

retske - Just so you're aware, the app that rogro linked to just a few posts above does all those things without needing to install bloatware (except for the "1 swipe" thing...what's a tap or 2 more?).
So after a couple of months using the Hero I wanted to share the Widgets I still use. My sense UI now has allot of app icons but I still find most of these Widget useful. Please add any suggestions and I will post them up on page. Lets create a resource to make the iphone peeps jealous
3RD PARTY WIDGETS:
BBC News (8/10) two widgets on my home page one for most popular and another for tech or sport
News Buzz (7/10) Still good but have stopped using it
Weather Bug (small) (5/10) Removed it
S2 CalenderWidget (9/10) for me by far the best calendar widget (two types to choose from)
Andriod and Me (small)(3/10) If nothing else to do a nice for android information
Twidriod Pro (8/10) simple but works well
Google scoreboard (9/10) I like this allot good for all sports updates
Facebook (don’t have an account I‘m a twitter man)
HTC WIDGETS:
HTC calendar (small) (8/10) Removed
HTC Settings GPS/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Mobile (8/10) Good functions I now only have gps as ModaCo's roms have a wifi off app already installed
HTC Weather/Clock (9/10) Still nice looking but have gone for 2X2 icon without clock
HTC bookmarks (8/10) still use them
HTC footprints (Large) (8/10) Was fun at first but now removed
HTC Album (4/10) Removed
HTC Picture frame( 4/10) still use it
Contacts (8/10) nice but don’t use
Other than the stock HTC widgets - small music player, messaging and the ones you listed, I also use Google's Scoreboard. If you're into sports, its pretty good.
Oh and I have the Facebook widget too.
Someone should write one for xda-devs, it could show you PMs and when people reply to your threads/posts.... Or maybe I'm just beginning to rely on the Hero just a little too much these days.
I agree Floridak xda dev should be more mobile friendly. It would be nice to get updates via a widget. It would also be nice yo have a mobile edition web page that you can post on.
+1
totaly agree with the XDA-widget!

what's different than getting to mob portal from web portal home page? (other than saving a click)
lets get back on topic. Any new Widgets out there?
try feedr. It's $0.99 but you can create an rss feed of xda forums and then place as many widgets on your desktops as you like..I like it a lot.
i use the normal xda website all the time from my hero, i find it great and if you zoom in the auto format setting kicks in to save you the hassle
Did anyone hear of widget that would show/hide my number when calling with one press on a home screen ? That would save a lot of effort

I found interesting the Volume Widget Pro.
It's pretty nice and really useful to change music and alarm volume level from the home screen. And it has lot's of options to configure the colors of the widget.
What I'm using.
Twidgit, nice little widget shows the latest tweet.
BBC news, small widget that shows the latest headline.
Did have 'android and me' but it wasn't much of interest on it.
Ditto engaget.
I posted about this issue a while back when i first got my Hero. I was told it was not possible then. I`m hoping someone can remedy this issue as i hate having to scroll through 30-40 apps to find what i`m looking for. Even WM 6.1 has this facility!

I remember a thread on here a while ago where people were theming to get the Windows Phone 7 look. There's now a launcher on the market called Launcher 7 that does most of the work for you, you should check it out.

Just tried it out. Its very smooth, and its the best one I have come across.
im enjoying this launcher, its really smooth.

Definitely. If there's one thing that I'd like to see more of on the Market, it's more "alternative" launchers like this. Launcher Pro, ADW, Go, etc. all have their differences, but they're more or less the same in that they're all plays off of the whole multiple homescreen and a dock thing. It's nice to see new ideas out there. I remember a while back there was a launcher that showed all of your texts, email, facebook notifications, etc. in kind of an agenda view. It never really took off, but it's good to see devs think outside the box about the homescreen.

Because thats the core of how android to this point is intended to work. I like Launcher7, its fast, smooth and functional so I play with it here and there but the tile UI is comparatively bland and boring even with widget support (and the custom ones I've seen that arent bland and boring are WAY too busy). I'm gonna put it on my wifes phone since she'll love the big ass simple tiles concept.

without using custom images those 2x1 and 1x1 tiles (and the headphone/camera images) are all there is. I'm not going to spend anytime importing images because I like my android phone as an android phone and it wont get any use anyway. I was basically showing how the UI looks unmolested.
Hi guys,
So I loved Twidroyd when Ubersocial hadn't messed it up. Now I've tried Plume and Tweetcaster which are too ugly for my liking. Also tried twicca which is sweet except for their system of notifying about tweets without downloading them first. Is there any way to get twicca to do that?
Or alternatively, an elegant twitter client or one with decent customizability in terms of appearance would be nice too.
Try fiddling with the Tweet Caster theme. Functionally rich and a great twitter client.

are there other options besides the 4 choices included in the app? couldn't find any on the market
Try Twicca
like i said, i hate the way twicca tells you about notifications without downloading the tweets mentioned.
plume seems second best to twidroyd so far. ubersocial just plain sucks
How about tweetdeck??

so you want it to tell you have a new mention and actually show the mention in the notification panel or something?
ive tried all the twitter clients and twicca is by far the overall best - atleast to me. it has the cleanest interface as it not being all cluttered with extra unneeded stuff on the screen and also being able to color code your followers is nice too. after twicca i would say tweetdeck would be in 2nd.
Those are pretty much it for Android twitter apps, gonna have to suck it up.. I personally use Twicca & Seesmic... Best bet is to learn how to develop apps and make one to your liking
i just use the twitter app?? it does everything fine.

i settled on plume premium. it works. what i meant was that it should have updated the app with the new tweets when it notifies me of updates, not wait for me to click on the notification, then load the app, then load the tweets.
plume premium comes close to what twidroyd used to be before ubersocial killed it. (damn you ubermedia)
I was thinking about this. If we choose to use a custom launcher, we will likely lose blinkfeed, right? I've got a dozen or so Apex tricks that I have come to rely on. I wonder how this will work??
I know in the past when i used a One X using a custom launcher pretty much removed all the Sense apps so I could see that happening again this time
i must be one of the only people looking forward to blinkfeed!
i almost always had a sports news widget on my homescreen (though not the main one to be fair) and for a large amount of time twitter and facebook too - to have all of that on a dedicated screen (not even a widget) should be really great for me.
I'm looking forward to blinkfeed myself. I thought more people would love that feature. I think it's great.
Sense 5 is so sexy. Why would anyone want to install a different launcher on it?

My wife is probably going to love it. I would prefer to be able to move it to off center. I'm not totally thrilled with any FB or Twitter (-Caster is my favorite on both) widget, but I use them for feeds as well. I can see liking it, providing it's fairly customizable.

I'm going to give it a go. I only use 3 homescreens currently anyway and my default one if very sparse with only 4 apps. The idea of blink feed seems good, as long as it can sync with all the stuff I look at on currents I will be pretty happy.
Still no word on the menu button for legacy apps though.
Yes, using a custom launcher will mean you'll lose blinkfeed.
The only way around that will be to wait until someone has made blinkfeed into a separate flashable zip. At that point, you'll be able to set up your custom launcher as you'd like and then I guess you'd just be able to flash blinkfeed to have the functionality of both.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
HTC Widgets only work on stock launcher, I don't see why Blinkfeed would be any different.
M.
Far as I can tell blink feed is another screen on sense. No sense=no blink. Personally I hope a dev can get rid of it. I don't need a news thing and I don't use Facebook or twitter so it seems kinda useless. Id like to see a messaging panel on it with a quick reply like on the Ubuntu touch where its in the notification.

I am looking forward to trying out blinkfeed as it now follows holo guidelines and they have dropped the horrid 3d look for a much more modern flat look and if I don't like it I will put on a custom launcher.
Does anyone know if you can move the blinkfeed to another home screen as it would in my opinion be much nicer in the middle screen so you can swipe left or right for widgets/apps
It is one of the things I like too. But I also like being able to turn off icon labels, create my on gestures, etc. in Apex. Seems like it might be kind of like switching to an iphone -- if you want blinkfeed, you lose ability to customize.
Meanwhile, I'm sittin' on my hands until I see a few audio reviews.

Hi. I pre-ordered and already have my hands on a shiny new HTC One, and BlinkFeed was not one of the reasons I bought it. One of the first things I did after getting the phone was installing Apex Launcher. I use its gestures too and I like the customizability it offers. Thankfully for me, BlinkFeed indeed goes away with a custom launcher
coming from a iOS device im looking forward on all the HTC features. iphone really gets so boring. does the blinkfeed feature use a lot of power and will using a custom launcher make the battery last longer?

My One is in for repairs but in the week I was using it i didn't notice any noticeable battery drain from Blinkfeed the the first few days battery life doesn't tend to be good as it needs a couple of charging cycles but certainly battery life is very good.
I'm a big fan of Nova I use it on my Nexus7 but i doubt I will be on my one.

hey, i'm surprised about the battery life with blinkfeed. Also the data traffic is less, in one week i had used only 40mb for blinkfeed. I think thats great.
