Ever since I factory reset my phone contact names are not displayed on the car when someone calls. It just shows the number instead of the name. Even before there was some contacts that did not show the name and some that would. Anyone know why this happens and how to solve it ?

do you have any numbers in your cars "phone book"? I know on my car (2011 Subaru Outback), it only displays the number, but I haven't tried to set up any phone book contacts yet. It's only a small scrolling screen. I can't recall what it's like on my wife's 2010 Mazda 6 with the LCD display screen.

I'm not sure if it stores any contacts in the phone book. What happens is everytime I turn the car on it connects to the phone and then it transfers contacts to itself. Which is where it should be pulling names from. It worked fine with a very old dumb phone don't see why it would not work with the SGS.
Where do you have your contacts stored on your phone ??
If in Google Contacts, maybe they need to be on the phone itself ?

Ya I was thinking maybe that was it but I remember before it was working with google contacts. Also to note is that when I try to voice dial out through the cars system I can use (google) contact names just fine. Almost all my contacts are stored in google don't really want to make duplicates if its possible to get it working with google contacts which I know there must be because it worked before with them.

Hello, does anybody found out how to sort contacts in iDrive system by last name? When I synchronized contacts from HD2, they were listed as Last Name First Name, but when I did it with HD7 they appear in opposite order.
I tried to change these settings in people hub, but it didnt help. It changed in HD7, but in the car it is still the same. I have BMW 730d E65.
Couple of days later, and I am still stucked in the same situation. Anybody could help?
Is it related to the "File As" in the contact? If not, then I would imagine that it's purely down to how the iDrive system interprets it.

Yes, I would contact BMW, it seems the way the Idrive reads the data is why this is happening, have you ever synced any other phones?
On HD2, the phone did not allow you to sort list by names, we had to dl an app to control that, I prefer to view my contact by first name rather then last name.
I know that in Idrive there is a view settings on how its vied but not sure how to access.

Hi, I have synced with my HD2 and it had sorted the list by Last Name, but with the HD7 it is sorted by First Name. I have tried to change the settings in People hub, but it did not help. In iDrive menu its not possible to change anything regarding phone. It just shows the list of the synchronized items.
Hi!
Have you got the solution?
In my car is the same problem, but I have Touch HD. I'd like to view the contacts in order "lastname, firstname". I think it would be anything with bluetooth transmitting procedure of the different phones. Maybe the HD and HD7 synchs the contact name other as HD2. It must be a setting for that anywhere on the phone by Bluetooth, but I don't find it. Maybe a registry tweak...
Bye,
B.
have you tried changing the sort order on the phone? go to settings, applications, people and change whether to sort/ display by first or last name
Yes, I tried that. It is no matter, how is the order on the phone.
But I found an application, Jetware is the name. This application can manipulating the bluetooth hands free setting, right the name's order through a synchronisation.
Now it is almost perfect, just by the names where it's only a firstname in the phonebook, shows now before a "(null)". E.g. on phone is there only a Joe, then on the display of the car it is "(null) Joe"...
Ok so when I pair my phone with my car everything works fine apart from individual people contact numbers are not identified as 'home', 'mobile', 'work' etc.
It's as this feature isn't being read.
When I 'call contact' it will come up with 3 choices but those choices are never in the same order, in fact on one occasion all three numbers were the same phone number!
The contacts are from my google account, synced in from there.
Did have an HTC desire hooked up with none of these issues, in fact car gave appropriate icons to individual numbers dependent on their classification tag.
Anyone any thoughts - it is making the phones use in the car very time consuming!
Thx in advance

Which Rom do you use?
I have noticed that the way your car processes your contacts depends on your device's protocol, but it also depents on the car's multimedia unit.
For example in my car the contacts are messed up, but when i try to hook it to another car, then my contact are shown correctly.
rom version
Thx for reply,
rom version is 2.3.6
Would anyone have any idea why I can't Voice Dial when paired with my new Jeep.
The phone works fine with the Jeep.
I can see all the connects in the Jeep. I can click on any and it connects fine.
All other Voice Activated things work (Nav, Music etc.)
When I try to Dial by Voice it says "Your Favorites List is Empty".
I tried adding contacts to the Favorites on the Phone and on the Jeep and both work if I use the Respective Touch Screen.
I don't know why it's restricted to Favorites in the first place.
I do have several accounts on the phone (Exchange - Work [unsecured], gmail, Hotmail etc.) Only Work Exchange has any contacts. So maybe the Voice Dial is looking in the wrong "account". No idea how to fix it though.
I might wipe it, and just manually add a few gmail contacts and see if that works. It's confused about something.
But everything else works fine.

For that system, make sure you are attempting to use the phone button to activate the VR for phone commands, instead of the general purpose VR button that gets used for tasks unrelated to the phone.
Hmmm,
I'm using the middle VR button on the steering wheel (See attached image). What button should I use?
If I say "Help" after hitting the VR button it says I can say "Call John Smith Mobile" along with Play Artist, Etc.
Maybe you are on to something though.
Ugh, that was it !!
I Pushed the Phone Button instead and it worked perfectly.
Weird that Help said I could say Call and the Error I got. But I'm happy now.
Thanks a million !!
Dealer didn't know either !!

Unfortunately this is one of the few bad things about Lollipop. The ability to display only contacts with numbers was removed.
These are the only options I've been able to find of what contacts to display
I had this option in my Note Edge, but in S6 I don't see it.
I was looking under phonebook, contacts etc.
Where is this option? Is it really gone?

I found a way to fix this but it takes a bit of savey but this is a developers forum...
Export your google contacts (csv)
Sort your contacts by the phone number (there's 4 fields there, I sorted all 4 type/number) since I wasn't entirely sure the mobile 1 is really always there or not if there is a mobile 2 (1 is primary) but regardless I just wanted to separate the entries with phone numbers and those that didn't.
After sorted I deleted everything without a number.
I went into gmail and made a Phone contact list (if you want you can make an example entry so you know what it looks like I guess) but I could tell it was like * something:::* All Contacts in the one field, I just changed this to * Phone:::*All contacts
then I wrote out the file
Unfortunately even thought it's a CSV it tab delimited it vs comma (this may have been the libreoffice)
so i edited with vi and substitute all tabs with ,'s
s/(control-v)(tab)/,/g
when I did this is also had three "blank" lines at the beginning with all ,'s so I just deleted those to get the titles on the top.
I then went back into gmail contacts and imported this file
It populated all those entries in my Phone contact list
I then went to the phone and told it to only display entries from my Phone contact list and ...
PRESTO - I see only the entries with numbers now
Everything else is there but I don't see it in my phone when i want to select someone to dial!
Personally I think this is BS to have to do this but I just don't think there is another option.
Solution
A simpler solution is by going to Contacts - Settings - Display preferences - Hide incomplete numbers.
Im running MIUI 7 Lollipop

Doesn't work on EMUI 4.1 on Huawei Honor 8.
I am having a interesting issue with my phone that I cannot figure out. When I receive a text message the system adds a +1 to the start of the phone number it is coming from, I am using the Samsung Messages application but this does the same thing apparently with the Google SMS app and the Verizon messenger app (as I have\ tried these as well), this only happens with a text and if I get a phone call or look in the address book no numbers have a +1.
The reason this is an issue is because my car imports my phonebook as it appears in the contacts and when I get a text it comes up as Unknown Caller because of the added +1 but phone calls do not have the +1 so they show up just fine.
While working on this I have discovered that if I go to the text by going to my contacts then clicking on the persons name it will remove the +1 and it will stay removed as I text them but the second I get texted back the +1 is added. I called Verizon eventually and was told reset settings, reset network settings, turn off assisted dialing. None of these work and there next solution was to factory reset, I don't think this will help because it isn't just my phone but my wife and son who also got the same phone have the same thing happen.
Has anyone experienced this and know how to fix it. I have been through all the phone and dev settings looking for something. I cannot find any other threads online for this except for a couple from AT&T users from different samsung phones years ago with no answer. Previous to this we were using Note 9's and did not have this issue. Any help is appreciated.
edit: The phone is not rooted or modded and is on Android 11 One UI 3.1, sorry forgot to add that.
I think it's under: Settings -> Call Settings -> Other call settings -> Roaming assistance

That is assisted dialing I turned off already and it didn't affect it. It's also just on text messages phone functions don't have this happen for some reason.
The +1 is your coumtry code prefix (USA).
While you can change this in your messaging app you can't change it from eveyone else's phone.
From using it in your car radio might be somethng in your car settings or else in your contact list add the +1 to all your contacts.

I understand that the +1 is the country code.
It isn't from other people's phones it is the way the Ultra is handling the information when it comes to text messaging. I did the following test. I removed my son as a contact in my phone and called my phone from his. The phone number shows up as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. I then sent a text message to myself from his phone while he still was not in my contacts. I have 3 different text applications on my phone right now for testing purposes (default Samsung, Google's SMS app, and Verizon Messeages) and all 3 shows the phone number as +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
The car isn't adding the the +1 to contacts, when my phonebook syncs to the car and I go into it the phonebook on my cars display they show the same as in my contacts "Contacts Name" (xxx) xxx-xxxx but when a text comes in it shows Unknown +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
The issue solely lies with text messages being received on the S21 Ultra as this happens when people on Apple phones or Android phones (multiple brands) text me.
In regards to text messaging in general, i live not far from you ( about 9500 miles ) and I have a different device then yours. Receiving text messages from someone in my contacts list shows up contact name. Receiving other text message not in my contact list will show as country code and phone number. There are exceptions to this in regards to texts from government agencies and google which will show up who are not in my contacts list. I think texts messaging work around the international standard ie: country code + phone number while phone calls may not (unless making international calls). So i don't think it's device specific as it more to do with the networks that you connect to.
In regards to talking to you car ( text wise ) i may be of little help as i don't have a android 11 device and a car to talk to.
Since your note 9 works, and as far as i know latest version is android 10, it could be an issue with android 11. From your test using your son's phone have tried to add the +1 to his number to your phone and see if it's make a difference.
