Hello!
I'm thinking of de-branding my Galaxy S in hoping I may get latest updates faster and not have to wait for o2 to "OK" the update.
Can anyone tell me if this is worth it?
Well you could always wait for the official froyo release and see.
I'm not sure whats different on the O2 branded firmware, With the orange one they had changed the icons and theme and it was horrid.
De-branding was one of the first things I did when I got the phone (like literally the first day! )
Edit: probably should add this shouldn't be in the dev forum....
I have a o2 Galaxy S and the only branding on it I can see is a extra o2 Arena wallpaper, and o2 bookmarks in the browser which I deleted all of them.
Their latest firmware is JM1.
Mine doesn't have the 3 button recovery mode, so I have to wait for official o2 release of Froyo
Is jm1 the latest official update from samsung? Iv only just got the jm1 update the other day and it seems that most people got it ages ago. hmmm just dont know what to do!

PSP:
Are you sure you don't have the three button recovery?... 3 buttons have always worked on my handset, bought in the UK and on O2 with O2 firmware...
ScottSmith:
O2 JM1 was available with test mode was turned on in kies a while back, but they pulled it and it has now re-appeared on their servers. It is the latest official release from O2.
As for de-branding to get updates... I'm waiting to see how the froyo rollout goes before going through it... With O2 the branding is minimal and the handsets don't seem to be locked in any way so I'd say bare with it and wait to decide when froyo is avail.

I'm sure recovery mode has been disabled, tried numerous times with no sucess. I got mine 3 weeks ago, had JM1 preinstalled. Guessing that the newer phone have it disabled.
Thank you all for your advise! I'm going to wait for froyo and see!

Try recovery mode by holding volume up instead of down.

Hi. I have looked around but I'm still confused and want to get it right so I can sit back and wait for froyo to be available through kies officially. At the moment i'm using jg5.
I got JM1, updated via Kies.
JM1.
I got a brand new one at 23th August and the firmware is JM1. But I can not get into download mode with 3 buttons comb.
Thanks guys. Ive gone to samsung firmwares and there are 2 jm1 firmwares, one says its the new one. Which one should I go for to enable me to update through kies in the future? Or will the both work?
JM1 new..

I'm in exactly the same position, got it little over a week ago, came with JM1, but no access to the 3 button combo
Thanks.
I did the update yesterday without TEST MODE and it gave me Android 2.2.
without TEST MODE
Just flashed jm1 new and in kies it says that this devices firmware cannot be updated. Is it the wrong one? Thanks
Plain and simple:
Galaxy S from Vodafone Romania bought in September 2010.
Issue 1: 3 button recovery mode disabled
Issue 2: locked out due to "too many unlocking patterns trials"
Of course, the combo gmail account + null password or ANYTHING else is not working, and trust me, I've been reading about this issue for 12 hours...
What to do next except a trip to the Service?
(I use to have a HTC TD and installed a lot of ROM into it so I'm familiar with these)
Install the MTU drivers, download adb, go to adb/tools folder and type in command promt the following:
adb reboot recovery
that should restart it in recovery mode.
Even if the device is set to USB debugging OFF (default setting)? Will it work?
I can confirm that the 3 Button stuff does not work on Vodafone Galaxy S.
I will call Vodafone today and also Samsung to ask them what to do.
Keep you posted.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You should try the 3 Button Fix. I, myself, have a phone from Vodafone RO bought in Sept. Came with stock JM1. The 3 Button fix worked for me. After that, everything is easy.

Maybe you would like to share with us your hardware details...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Seems like Vodafone Romania installed some custom firmware on the phone. Which firmware are you running?
I got my 16giger from Vodafone UK, and it came with stock XXJF3, no branding whatsoever on the phone. No problem with 3-button recovery/download mode.

Is that a branded firmware? The official UK update via kies was XWJM1.
I have exactly the same problem :/
3buttons doesn't work.
USB Debugging OFF
unlocking patterns.
Telephone from Orange network with branding.
The only thing I did is an update from I9000BVJF3 to I9000XXJM1 using KIES test mode. Phone has been sent to service

Do not have a clue. I think is stock...
Any way the show is starting with Vodafone and Samsung here in Romania.
Vodafone said it doesn't have support for this type of issues and it is a problem of Samsung.
Samsung said that the feature doesn't exist on this phone so way am I asking.
Sent two mail's until know to them...waiting for an answer.
I would like to know if any of you have upgraded to Froyo in the way it was meant to be. By this I mean without rooting/flashing/Odin/regedit + Kies, I mean by simply connecting the phone and clicking on upgrade firmware in Kies and tada Froyo?
Reason I ask is I've heard that the official Froyo release is available in some countries but I want to know if it's true?
So if you have upgraded to Froyo by this way please post and also what country you're from.
I'm from South Africa and I'm still waiting.
There's been loads of posts about this, think it was just released to Nordic countries...

I tweaked the registry in Kies to get the JP6 update as froyo still isn't available in the UK. Samsung soon pulled the Swedish update for whatever reason.

I've upgraded to FroYo with Kies (without any reg hacks) and I could still get it a couple of weeks ago, didn't tried to flash my phone again tho, because all the problems I had, was gone, after I restored my phone from the recovery menu.
I'm in Denmark btw.
Wait, you mean we should be able to flash phone through KIES??
:O
Was already wondering what is kies all about..
I am only on Firmware Verion XXJF3 and I know that a newer version is avaiable. Yet for some weird reason my Kies application does not recognise this. I thought getting the new version would help and today I got the latest Kies 1.5.3.10103_100 but still no joy :-(
Also my phone was purchased on Orange Contract if this helps
any ideas please?
I think it's because the phone is an Orange contract phone, Samsung have said Froyo has been released but won't be available for contract phone users until about the end of this month.
Hang in there buddy
xt9 bug

Thanks for the reply. Im surprised that even the newer version JM1 is not avaiable as opposed to Froy. I would have thought that at least I could update to this version :-(
device's version cannot be updated
Hi,
When I select firmware upgrade from Kies, I get this information:
Model Name: GT-9000
CurrentVersion: PDA:JF3/Phone:JF3
This device's version cannot be updated.
I have done a factory reset to my phone and even unrooted the phone but still i am getting the same error.
I have tried to reinstall Kies as well but no luck.
Did any one find any think on this.

Hi,
I have a question that's related.
If you have an Orange contract phone, but have flashed with a firmware to remove Orange branding, does Kies then think that your phone is non-contract and subsequently update it?
Thanks!
Hello guys,
I bought my wife a Galaxy Note for her birthday last month. I have been waiting for the ICS update to show up on the phone and I have gotten nothing. I go into settings > about phone > update, it says phone is up to date. I tried Kies on two different laptops and it says GT-N7000 does not support initializing. I have removed Kies and reinstalled it, but no luck.
I did more digging to see where my phone was meant to be sent. The model is N7000XXLA4, so according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356325 , my phone is the one meant for Germany. Yet they got their updates almost 2 months ago. I have tried a factory reset on the phone but still no luck. Can anyone let me know what I am doing wrong?
PS: I know how to root and install ROMs. As the phone is not for me, I really want to stick to the official updates.
Thanks!
Is the phone rooted? That'll break any updates.

No man, never rooted the phone.
Anyone?
If this is German ROM, you will get the OTA update only when you are located in Germany and connected to a German Carrier.
If you are located outside, you can download the update here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
and flash with Odin 1.876 (same link).
