[Q] Headphones with Phonecalls - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have upgraded my phone to 2.2 from 2.1 and when I make a phone call I can no longer listen to the caller with my headphones. I do not have headphones with a microphone I just wear my headphones and talk though the phone. This was good for when I was listening to music and I had to take a call, I did not have to remove them.
I have seen other threads like this for other phones but none for the Captivate and no one seems to know the answer for this. Does anyone know why this would change, and this was with the I897UCJI6 - Froyo firmware.

It is listed as a 2.2 issue for captivate. If you read through the big 2.2 issues thread you will find it.

Thanks for the reply, I saw that but was hoping there might have been a fix somewhere for it. Oh well I guess I will have to wait for a fix.

Not as of yet.

Rather than opening a new thread... I'll bump this one. Solution found?

would be interested to know the answer...
the stock headphones seem to work well but can no longer send the audio with any sort of volume through my car speakers

Until we get a non-beta build, we will probably be stuck with this issue.

Now that froyo officially got released for the captivate, has this been resolved?

Where did you get that information? There is no official Froyo for our phones yet.

[Q] Cognition v2.3b6, or Perception v4, or ?

Greetings-
I've searched, scanned, and read, but still as a n00b, I'm not sure of what my best options are. I'm on Cog 2.3b6 and like it, but I've also read that Bacon (based on Cog) pretty much rocks- but wired headsets don't work, which is a showstopper for me. I'm considering Perception 4 (largely due to ewingr's post yesterday), but I'm not finding much info about it (is it referred to as a different name?).
I'm also noticing that the battery charges slowly if I actively use the phone; most devices typically run off of the charger while plugged in, leaving the battery to simply charge. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing a device issue or a ROM issue.
So, I'm asking those that know for their input... stay on Cog 2.3b6, or try a different ROM to get the best experience? TIA
Wired headsets don't work in 4 either. But Bluetooth do.

At this point I'd wait. Based upon various comments it seems there will be a new Perception very soon.

Hmm... maybe I made too many assumptions about the wired headset problem. I have a pair of SkullCandy earbuds w/a mic and vol/mute controls that I need to use for calls... maybe I need to just try flashing Bacon and see what happens....

Wired headset works with Captivate kernels, but doesn't with Vibrant ones. It's a known issue. If you want a wired headset, don't flash a ROM with the Vibrant kernel. Read the description first.
Doesn't work with I9000 kernels, not vibrant.

It's the kernel that causes the problem. If you want to use the wired headsets for calls you cannot use SetiroN's kernel. Doesn't matter what kind of ROM it is.

[Q] Call audio through headphone out

hey guys,
first off i wanna thank all you awesome devs for making the android platform and the sgs the awesome experience it us i switched from iphone about a month back now and i have no regrets.
well maybe except one tiny one? when i was playing music in the car.. and i got a call.. the call audio would come through the same headphone jack and i could hear it through the car speakers while speaking through the phone mic.
is such an option possible on the sgs? also does anyone know of a way to lower the mic input volume for video so as to be able to film in loud environments such as gigs?
im running the megatron rom with froyo.
thanks for your time guys!
zorran
I would love for this to work too. I do a lot of work in very noisy areas, and use noise cancelling headphones to deaden outside noise. On my iPhone I could answer calls using the phone mic and headphones for the speaker. It's driving me insane that I can't do this on my Galaxy S.
search.. is that so hard for everyone .. i have posted solution to this multiple times.

[Q] Laggy in-call sound quality

Hi
Just wanted to know if others experience this too?
when making a phone call, my sound is lagging/blurry/scratching. Sometimes sound like (kind of) a robot.
I live in the city, and signal loss or network change is therefore not an issue.
Just thought it was wierd, but guess it will be fixed with update.
From post #12:
I hoped this was just a software error, but baseband upgrade and custom ROM didn't work. This is how it sounds

Thanks for heads up. Looks like it's software error fortunately, so Im more calm now
Found this at Paul's forum.
"Problem solved with the new baseband I think. Haven't noticed any tinny sound effect when in phone - either 2G or 3G connectivity.
It's a shockingly large improvement. Really bad that LG sells the phone with that software because mine was almost unusable in crowds because you had no idea what the other person was saying. Will be keen to jump to newer basebands now if they become available since it's proven it does make a huge difference. At least it's not a reason to NOT buy this phone anymore since it's easily fixable thanks to Paul now "

Hehe, funny to be quoted here, from a thread I started over at MoDaCo. According to my poll there a lot of 2X users experience bad sound.
Like I wrote at MoDaCo - I haven't noticed any weird sound after the baseband flash, so please upgrade and tell me if you also notice an improvement. I'll update the thread accordingly.
Btw, what baseband are you currently on?

If this is truly a hardware issue, don't delay- send it back. Furthermore, be mindful of the replacement you receive. Here is an example of an "ugly" situation that happened between two owners. Be firm & inspect your replacement thoroughly- if it's not in "like-new" condition or has residual data from a previous owner, argue for a brand new 2X.

I think we got quite good policies in Denmark, so I'll probably just get a new one at first But thanks for the advice. Hopefully the next will show up better.
A friend of mine experienced pixel "errors" on his AND his girlfriends, so the next one better be fully functional... I know that TDC provider in Denmark wanted to postpone the release too, because of malfunctioning devices. This was before they ever sold any, and they haven't got them in stock yet

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4651820/Stemme 002.amr (starts around 15 sec)
Now I just have to wait for "three" to send it in, and return a new one... if it happens three times, I'll get my mony back, and perhaps go for the SGS2 and hope it gets Tegra2... a shame, such a nice phone otherwise. Hope they make it work, but I hear a lot of complaints *fingers crossed*
EDIT: Damn, just heard of three occasions of the same problem here in Denmark... hope they can fix it
I'm not experiencing any scratchy sounds like you, not even before I upgraded baseband. So I guess it's not all O2X in Denmark that has the problem.
I bought mine through Callme.

The problem has been there all the time for me. Just saying the update didn't work for me, so I guess it is hardware related in my case. There has just been some discussions about wether it is hardware or software related.
The problem doesn't occure on all devices, but some are unlucky. 2 of my friends, which bought it on the release date, as my self, has experienced the same problem.
Also, on mobildebat.dk (danish forum) people complain about having the same problem. Such a shame.
I turned in my phone now, and has to wait for up to 10 days for LG to come up with a solution now Hope it goes faster. If i went down to the store last wednesday, I would hav gotten a new phone right away, due to 14 days return policy. Now I have to use my Nokia N82, damn it's slow
Hi,
I have had the same problems on my week old phone. Scrathy sound, Buzzing sound that both ends can hear and the other end sounding "tinny" or like a robot.
I also had random reboots.
Sent it in to repairs monday, hopefully it won't come back with "no faults found".
MY local Telia shop, where I bought the phone, hadn't heard about the problem from more than 1-2 people. Danish LG customerservice also hadn't heard about it. (This was a week ago.)
BTW: Is it normal for camera area to get very hot during calls? I had that too. Battery time was ok. 1-1½ day of normal use. Heavy wifi/talk/gps = less than a day.
I made a recording of the buzzing sound (starts at around 20secs in.):

[Q] Delay when answering a call on 2.3.3

Hey guys,
After JVK update I've been having this problem with delays in answering calls. The call wouldn't be answered for about 2 seconds even after sliding the answer call button. I have pure JVK, 512 pit and bootloader. No root or etc.
Is there anyway for me to fix this? It's so damn irritating..
Have you done anything to the ROM after installing it? I'm running XXJVK and don't have this issue.

Question revised.
Very strange bro, if you haven't modified the ROM in anyway I'm at a loss. I'm assuming you didn't use a custom ROM. I flashed the version with the bootloader so don't know if that made any difference.
I can confirm that!
STOCK JVK

I have made a small research and it seems all 2.3.3 phones (Nexus one, HTC) have this problem. And there is an app at the market named: Call Delay Patch. I did not try it yet. In fact I do not want to try! Because it is the basic function of a phone to be able to answer a call! You should not install some third party app to do that! Do you hear me Google!

It's officialy Google not Samsung. Google admited the bug at last.
Maybe the reason Google pulled the JVK update...
If you're having the call delay problem, especially on a device that is not the Nexus One, please star the issue here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16230
This is a known bug with Gingerbread, that Google recently declined, saying it was "device specific" (to the Nexus One).
However this problem is also being reportedly widely on the HTC Desire, as well as Samsung Galaxy devices. I have posted a new issue above and not attributed it to a specific device.
Please comment and star this issue. And please specificy especially if your device is not the Nexus One, so that Google gets this message that this is a widespread Gingerbread bug, which has nothing to do with the device.
Thanks.
The Google employee following up on the call delay issue, in the Google support forums, is asking people to fill out the following form, to gather information about how people are affected and on what devices.

[Q] A Captivate with Cyanogenmod that doesn't have sound.

I'm not entirely sure if this is an issue with my hardware or software which is why I'm asking where I should look (or start a thread) first. I've had sound before but now there is nothing, not even crackling or popping. I'm using Cyanogenmod 11 on a Samsung Captivate. I read a thread about loosening a screw near the speaker and tried that (along with a not-so-deep tear-down), but still not a peep (or beep). Something I should mention is that headphones DO work when they're plugged in. Additionally I've done some scouring of the Internet for a fix but I can't find any problems truly similar to mine.
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. It seems to me like you have a hardware failure. Which version of the Captivate do you have? Unbranded or AT&T?
Hi to you too
Thank you for replying. I believe it is the at&t version, although I'll admit I wasn't aware there was a Captivate that wasn't an at&t version. That would be found in the info part of the phone as the model number right?

That's right, and most at&t phones actually have the at&t logo somewhere on the phone, as well as the at&t logo during the boot animation. If it has either of those we can safely assume that is the at&t model, otherwise please let me know what the model number is.

Thanks for the extra information. I'm going to have this thread moved to the AT&T Captivate q&a section here:

That way it'll reach the people who are most experienced with your device, so if it is a common bug they should be able to walk you through it. It sounds hardware related to me but lets see what the Captivate experts say.

It does sound like hardware. Have you tried slightly pushing on the speaker? I tends to come loose.
If you have any flashing experience, you can try flashing stock to completely rule out software issue but since the aux works, I'm pretty sure it's hardware.
I have tried pushing on the speaker. The only reason I was thinking it might be a software issue is because I changed some of the settings in what I believe is called dsp. Before I flash it back to the stock software (firmware?) is there any other troubleshooting I could try? Putting Cyanogenmod on it was somewhat of a process and overall I like it. And if it is a hardware problem how much would it cost to fix (not that I have any money to do so anyway )? And before I end this reply, thank you for your help.

You could always flash CM over and that would rule out the system file possibility.
Was the problem there before flashing CM? And I have a neat little guide on how to flash in my "most thanked" posts if you need it to get back to CM after flashing stock.

I actually don't remember if the problem was there or not as I flashed CM on it pretty much as soon as I got it. Can I just start from the "install from zip" process to reflash CM on it? In the meantime I'll see if I can do that without there being any potential problems with bricking the phone etc. And thank you for being patient with me .

Yeah, just flash the ROM zip and the Gapps over your current one. It's called a "dirty flash" and will only wipe your system settings.
I was celebrating St. Patrick's day which is why I haven't replied sooner, apologies. Anyway, I will do that, although I learned from the previous owner that the sound was going out so now I'm 99% positive that it's the hardware. Is it okay for me to mention that replacement speakers appear to be relatively cheap (and possibly easy to install)? And one last question, for the future, is it more polite to leave the quote in the reply rather than take it out?

You should keep the quote, it notices the user you quote and that way, he can reply faster (me in this case).
And yeah speaker replacement is definitely an option. You should be able to find a quick video guide on youtube, I believe it's fairly easy to do.

I put an older CM version (that was under the stable category) on to see if it was the software and I checked with the previous owner to see if the sound was going out (it was). There still isn't any sound so it's definitely the hardware. Now the question is; do I spend money to replace the speaker on an old phone that I don't really need?
That'd probably be a different thread though.
Thank you for your help!

Does it really? I thought for sure it was hardware related, but if there's a way around spending too much money I'm all for it, thank you!
So I installed it and still nothing. But still thank you.

So, I think I know how to replace/install the speaker and I've watched a video or two on the process. Would you have any do's or don'ts, tips, et cetera?
