[Q] How to Sideload Apps - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some non-market apps that i downloaded on my computer. Is there a certain place I am supposed to copy the .apk on the phone or am I supposed to use a program? I've heard some thing about AppsInstaller but I am still not 100% sure about how the process goes. I've got the OCLF and Titanium back-up working so I'm pretty sure my root is good as well.

Go into the Market and search for "Astro". Its a file manager. Once you've downloaded it open it up and go to whatever directory that you saved the apk's to. Select whichever apk you want to install, and the default application installer should come up. Also if you have the Vibrant you could use the stock file manager. Hope this answers your?.

How to get apk files

Found this cool trick out today so wanted to share with all. Ok go into market and download the file manager Astro. Open up astro, hit menu, application manager, check all apps installed and hit backup. When your finished mount sd card then look for backups folder. Open it up and inside are all the .apk files for everything you have on your phone. You can now get apk's for almost anything as long as you install it and run the above steps.
...and as long as it's not Pac-Man....or the paid apps, when they start coming out.
Haha yeah i figured you already knew about this. I'm trying every app and game i can to see what wont work. Now i can scratch pacman off my try out list.

Astro can't backup pacman because its a .zip file and not a .apk, if you have JF's rc30 you can still get by busybox coping it to your sdcard, its in /data/app. As for pay apps they are probably encypted
We've been through this. I was joking with 555 up there
Noob here,
how can you locate or transfer a apk files? where are they exactly saved?

[Q] I stupidly uninstalled gmail, how to get it back?

Long story short, gmail kept freezing on me so I used Titanium to uninstall it and now gmail doesn't show up in the market and the apk's that I download don't give me the option to install them.
Any ideas?
I was able to get the Android email program to sync with gmail, but I still can't figure out how to get the actual gmail program back on.
Sorry, didn't mean to hit "Thanks". Don't know where you got the gmail apks, but try putting one of them in system/app then reboot.
You also might want to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 but just run the commands for gmail

I'm kind of a noob with all this. Where exactly would I find system/app? I don't see it in Astro. Thanks.

I assume you're running stock rooted.
Try this,
1. Download the signed Gapps.zip from here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642189 its in the second post.
2. Now from the zip file you downloaded. Extract the Gmail.apk and GmailProvider.apk. Using root explorer. Copy those files into system/app
(of course make sure you mount r/w)
4. Reboot your nook and you should have Gmail again.
Make sure you back everything up as always.
It worked for me. Hope it works for you as well.

I'd recommend doing what racks11479 said. But to see the system folder, get Root Explorer. It lets you see the deeper folders. Just don't break anything while you are down there.

You might not have the correct permissions set.
If you are able to ADB to your device. I've modified the honeycomb market install script from "jleecong" @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 for the Eclair Gmail only.
All you gotta do is extract the zip to your adb directory and run (double click) "GmailInstall.cmd" and you should be good to go.
**As always *Use at your own risk* and make sure you've backed up.**
Hope this works for you.

New Question
Since the OP's issue was resolved, I hope you won't mind me hijacking this thread. Does anyone know what the highest version (as in x.xx) off Gmail that will run on eclair rooted?

Wondering if the gmail from eclair might be the answer to a similar problem I have. Been rooted since version 1.0 and gmail app would sync nicely. Rooted 1.1 using the nookdev instructions and that is working fine except gmail simply doesn't sync unless I go into accounts, reenter my account data and the sync screen comes up and then it'll sync. The android email app works just fine. Syncs seamlessly. So would replacing things help?
You could always google it

Question about your script.... I have a Nook Color that I have rooted and all set up. I'd like to pass it over to my buddy, but need to change my gmail info for his. Would this essentially allow me to do that without having to unroot, restore, reroot then reregister?
I am looking for a way to completely root a device with my B&N and gMail info, then allow someone else to register/set-up the device with their info. Possible?
If you just go into settings and About Device and do a "Erase and Deregister" you should still have root. And once rebooted they will have the option of registering the device for the first time.
They will have to go through the LogicZoom welcome process as well. So you might want to guide them in that direction if they don't know what needs to be done to get youtube and market working for the first time.
I've just done it myself to see if it works and yes it does.
Please use my suggestions as a guide. All actions you take are "solely your responsibility"
Just make sure you do a backup "just in case" before you try this.

Thanks, I will try this again with them. I wish I could be in person, but this is a phone support situation for me (grrr).
From the way they described to me, the "Erase and Deregister" worked for the B&N part but my gmail account was still there. So it didn't completely remove their stuff. Google Talk and the Calendar are still stuck on my gmail and not theirs.
Will try again though, and if anyone else has input I would appreciate it, thanks!

I renamed my the stock Gmail.apk to Gmail.apk.old and the same for the stock GmailProvider.apk.
Then I did as you suggested through Root Explorer. Now I have no Gmail at all in my apps list after a reboot.
I tried to launch it directly from Root Explorer but it says "There was an error parsing the package."
I renamed the new files Gmail.apk.new and GmailProvider.apk.new and renamed old files back to their original. I rebooted and Gmail popped up again in my apps list.
Why did your method for the new Gmail files work for someone else but not for me? What went wrong?

[Q] Market won't recognize sideloaded apps

It seems that since updating to the AT&T 2.2 Froyo update and rooting the market will not recognize any side loaded apps that have been added to the phone since upgrading to 2.2. All apps that I side loaded on 2.1 are recognized and can be updated but nothing on 2.2. Anyone else have this problem and if so have you been able to fix this issue?
I used SuperOneClick to root the phone and did a reboot the phone afterward to allow side loading of apps and it is working. I am still using the adb install command to side load all my apps, is this wrong?
If this is something that is not to be discussed I apologize now.
Well I don't have a direct answer to your question but since you are rooted I highly suggest you go and get Titanium Backup along with atrackdog.
The former application will alloa you to backup any applications you want (or aall of them) and then save them to your computer. you can then move the folder to any phone and use Titanium to reinstall the applications exactly where you left off. That means launchers will have the same layouts and games will still have their save states.
The latter will allow you to check the update status of those applications since they won't show up as downloaded applications from the market.

side loaded paid apps will NEVER show in market.
free ones can be restored...
tibu has never been able to restore market links for me either.
there used to be a program MCleaner but it got taken off the market..
but all it did was this (do it yourself)
Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage Apps > All > Market
- force stop
- clear data
- clear cache (if availavle)
restart market > my apps

Actually, it does. Market only keeps track of the apps you buy/download through it. What you're asking is like expecting Wal-Mart to know what you bought from Target.
Hey guys I just had a question while reading through the replies.
I downloaded atrakdog and got a list of all the apps needed to be updated.
One of the apps was the market..
Mine is version 2.3.4
I need to update to 5.0.12
How do you update market? Btw I'm running cm7 does this effect it?

Market should update automatically. As far as the sideload apps you can. Also get root explorer and copy paste them to system/app then reboot and they'll all be there.

So your are saying instead of using adb installer just do a drop and drag to the system/app folder and install them that way? Now will that put them in the market place? I don't quite understand what you are really saying here. Excuse my ignorance.

That's exactly what I was thinking was moving the file to the system/app file then reinstalling the .apk first then doing the 3 button reboot to see if it would recognize the app on the market. I did try just a 3 button reboot after side loading a few apps using ADB Installer and just doing the normal drop and drag to the sim card and I know that doesn't recognize them. I am going to try and reinstall one of my apps that way and I will let you know if it shows up or not.
When trying to move a new .apk file to the system/app file it says "You cannot paste here because the file system is a read-only."

You have to click the small window at the top of the screen in root explorer that changes r/o to r/w. You have to do that in each directory you want to edit.

I just installed it without removing the other apk and I can confirm on Tiamat 2.2.1 XOOM that both markets can co-exist with 1 little glitch.
You can't seem to have 2 apps named the exact same thing in your APPS catalogue. I found that if I want to open the new market, I have to open AppBrain Market and select the new market and hit "OPEN"
Any ways around it? worst case, I'll delete the previous APK...
btw this market looks just like the new market on my Nexus One...
That link is for 3.1.5.

How do you install it? I can't seem to install the apk solarnz provided.
I tried to copy to system/app/ using root explorer but there is no existing Phonesky.apk.
Titanium Backup indicates that the market is Finsky.apk but renaming and replacing it doesn't do anything.
Luckily I backed up the original market using Titanium Backup.

ok so wouldn't install for me either. i am running monter rom 1.2 just for the record.
i used root explorer, but any file program that gets you into your system app folder will work.
go to system/app/vending.apk now you can rename this file, but i moved it to a folder on my sd card where i keep system stuff just in case i need it again.
after this restart your phone, and try to install the new market.apk. i just hit install right from my download file. everything worked fine.
hope this helps.
