[Q] wiping data and cache - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running eclair 2.1 with the jh7 update rooted with OCLF and I need to know when to wipe data and cache with CWrecovery and also when to factory reset. My goal is to have a clean switch to Cog 2.2.5 without having to use Odin back to stock. So please tell me when to do these things to have a clean install. Like before or after i install the new rom??

You have to use Odin to flash to stock first or something may end up corrupted during the Cog flash. I would back up all files from your internal SD to your PC first and remove your SIM and external SD card . I believe that a Master Clear wipes everything but a factory reset leaves everything on your internal intact. Things have less chance of corruption and run smoother when done this way.

How do I put my phone back to clean slate?

Im currently on FROYO JP6 and I wanna try a couple of cooked ROM, patch kernel, tweak this tweak that, play with customization, apply fix etc etc
But what I really dont know for sure is, after Ive done playing with my phone, what is the safest way to put my phone back to virgin slate? I dont care about all the data lost and such.
Will re-flashing JP6 with Odin and wipe internal SD be enough?
Will that also reset the kernel back to the stock one?
Will that also wipe all the lag fix I applied?
Will that get rid of voodoo?
Will that get rid of everything Ive done and put it back to virgin stage?
Cheers
just remove any lagfix you've applied before flashing. do a format and factory reset, then flash it back. as far as I know, it's as virgin as it gets ;p remember to do another factory reset after the flash!
Is that revert the custom kernel to the stock as well?

While your phone was pristine state, you could have backed up the Rom through Rom manager which is freely available. Otherwise use odin to flash your firmware.
Ya had i known it earlier i wud not ve called myself a noob now if i flash my old firmware using odin will i get the kernel back or can i update the official froyo with current settings

How do you do
1) a format
2) factory reset?
I can think of a few:
*** From recovery menu there are two options:
* wipe data/factory reset
* wipe cache partition
*** From the Dialpad in the phone, there is a Secret Code.
**** When the 'phone has booted, there is Setting -> Privacy -> Factory Reset.
What I really want to know is, which of the above does what? All the info I have seen has been poorly documented, or not at all.
I too would like to reset my SGS back to factory defaults, and ensure that all data and apps are gone, but I do not know which of the above to choose : I want to use the safest option. I read on this forum about someone who choose the Recovery Menu -> wipe data/factory reset, and nearly bricked his SGS. As a result he had to boot and enter the secret code (unsure how). ( URL is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817675 )
Hence my concern over the chosen method. Also, my phone has the 3Button-RecoveryMenu disabled so I want to be extra careful. Does anyone have a definiative answer, or is it always guess work?
Regards,
f
Last night I did a faction reset.
1) Settings -> Privacy -> Reset factory settings.
I think that all this does is boot into recovery and then run these fuctions:
* wipe data/factory reset
* wipe cache partition
I wish someone had explained this to me afore. However, it would be nice to know exactly which areas are deleted.
I know that /sdcard is wiped, but does the command only delete the files and dirs on the mount point (rm -rf /sdcard/*) or does it actually umount the file-system and mkfs the device? I don't know.
What or where is the cache area?

[Q] How do you flash a new ROM over cm7 or fix cm7?

Okay so I was a little too hyper with this ROM and I ended up installing everything from titanium backup onto cm7 which messed up a lot of things. I got the "com.android.phone unexpectedly stopped working" error and a few others. I tried wiping the davlik cache, wiping cache, and even a factory reset along with reinstalling cm7, yet com.android.phone is still gone (I have no contacts or dialer available in apps). I'm lost in what to do next. I would like to flash a new rom or if I could, flash a completely-back-to-normal cm7.
Thanks,
Eric
Go back into recovery and flash cm7 again, if you want to flash another rom flash back to stock jf6 and install a different rom.
I've tried to flash cm7 in recovery, sometimes it gets rid of the apps like a memory wipe but it won't reinstall the apps that are supposed to come with cm7 like dialer and contacts. How can I flash it to jh6? Master reset only got me to a memory wiped cm7.
You should not be running cm 7 if you do not know how to flash stock using odin one click.
Secondly, reflashing rom will reinstall all system apps. Make sure you are formatting system and cache then flash rom

how to get the cleanest possible base?

Experiencing a few issues.
I want to flash a fresh version of Milkys rom because the current version I have won't let me flash a new theme.
I have the current version backed up and can restore it everytime and it works fine.
Flashing a new copy doesnt work. I get force closures and other issues such as partial themes.
I've flashed back to JPU and JPY and I can then update to JVO through kies without issue.
Even then, I don't get the result I know I should get when flashing Milkys rom. For example, there is no theme.
If I try to factory reset or clearing cache etc, I just get bootloops.
I then restore the original version of the rom that I have backed up and it works fine but I can't flash themes or rather they make no difference and I can't factory reset for the same reasons as above.
Whats going on ?
Do I need to wipe the int sd card at all ? What is safe to delete ? What do I need to get rid of ?
Help !
Please !!
The best thing you can do is a complete format of your sd card in recovery mode.
Btw pay attention, you MUST reflash with odin a deodexed stock JVx (the base rom your theme needs) because just kernel and bootloaders (if i remeber well) should remain on your SD!
Then wipe everything, dalvik cache included.
After that you can put on your SD the theme and then install it by recovery.
PS: this way will erase your backups also, so copy that file to your computer to get back (if you need to).
ok. Fed up now lol
Formatted sd card from recovery and checked it is clean.
Using Odin, flashed JVR.
Using odin flashed Milky v1.2. About phone says I have the rom but zero theming.
Put onto the clean sdcard the milky 1.3 patch and a theme zip.
Flashed the 1.3 patch, rebooted and then flashed the theme but I can't get any theming at all.
Whats up with this damn thing ?
Oh and everytime I'm doing a factory reset in Milky I'm getting bootloops. Is this cos the lagfix is active ?
Ofc, if you have lagfix you must disable them before any kind of installation

Milky's is ODEXed. Are you sure you have ODEX theme you try to install?
If you try DEODEXed theme, it won't work.
Yeah, it was an odexed theme.

Odin doesn't do either of those things unless you tell it to. But you need to use odin one click and master clear for a wiped phone. This will delete everything so back up your stuff or run the master clear without your sim/external sd in the phone.
If you used a .pit with it then you're file system has been repartitioned, it doesn't wipe the sdcard as that has nothing to do with the system, it where you keep your stuff.
That would like swapping an engine in a car and also taking everything out of the trunk.

[Q] Questions after installing ICS

Ive installed ICS N7000XXLQ2_N7000XXLPT_N7000CPWLP4_HOME.tar replacing my old N7000XXKL3_N7000ODDKL1_INU. I have followed all the steps from STOCK roms page. But i have a few questions now:
1) I have performed a data and cache wipe, but i then turned the phone on back to check my CSC, i skipped all the Welcome to Android steps and just dialed up the CSC check code. Then i turned off my phone to install ICS. Could it smhow affect my phone in a negative way?
2) Although I have performed the cache and wipe data my Android folder Data still has all the Data files from games and apps which i had in my previous software. Is it normal?
3) when first launching the ICS even after a few updates I could not run any new app. Everything would keep crashing. Then I went back into the mode and did a factory reset and wipe thingie again. That helped and i can run newly installed apps. Need your comments about this situation.
Grateful,
QVA
1. Yes. Any wipe or restore on ics stock kernel can cause damage. You won't knoe until it's bricked.
2. Actually i had the same experience under lpy as this when it wouldn't clear the sd card when selected. My interpretation was that ics sd is mounted in a different section to gb and maybe they hadn't updated the kernel to look for this section? I'm probably way off there. I ended up doing a full wipe while connected to pc.
3. Mass fc's seems to be common. Firstly check your dpi setting, make sure it's above 213 as tablet not supported. If that doesn't solve, do a factory reset on a safe gb kernel before upgrading to ics again. Don't do any restores or wipes under ics kernel!
please hit thanks if i helped

How did you do it? I would have used PC Odin to do the flash, so you have a clean install.
If you already had a rooted ICS with CWM recovery, you would be best advised to either go back to a stock GB, root it and then flash the ICS of your choice after a full wipe.
Or you could use Abyss 4.2 to flash from an existing rooted ICS ROM.
now it s getting better

now after a factory reset and after usb storage format to remove all those files that were left behind durin softwasre reinstallation ICS seems to be working fine. No more fcs, it is working faster than Ginger. I used odin( the pc ver) to flash it.
should i do smth?
Games that used to lag are now not lagging or lag less. Sometimes menu gets a lag spike for half of a sec or smth but i dont mind that. So after that clean up and wipe which left sd files undeleted and then they got removed with a mass storage format i should not worry anymore? everything is fine and wont have any bad result in the future? I have a fully functional ics?
It looks like it. Its probably worth not doing any further wipes or restores under ics if you're happy with the performance. Samsung will be releasing updated kernels within hopefully a month or so, best wait till then.
please hit thanks if i helped
