[Q] 2.2 Battery problem - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have used Odin's one click to get Froyo, I have noticed that since I flashed, my Captivates battery dies after 4 hours of just being in stand by, I have to recharge it about 2-3 a day. My wallpaper is black, all unnecessary apps are turned off and it is kinda frustrating, anyone has an idea why this is happening? When I check what's been using up my battery it usually says that my Display is about 99% I have no idea what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Battery Problem

My phone suddenly just shuts down when I'm using it... not a "powering off" but just out of nowhere turns off
Anyone know what the problem might be?
I've had this same issue before, so I bought a new battery last month and it worked great until just last week...
I've tried resetting the battery stats....nothing....
The battery still fully charges and shows the correct percentage when I plug in the charger to use...
Could it be the ROM or battery issue?
....I'm currently using cannon's rom... 2.2.1
Anyone know how to fix?..... thanks

Well if you have a new battery already. And it shows its good. I think it might be the rom then.

Something to take note, What are you doing when it does this?
-Surfing net on the phone
-Listening to music
-Charging
-Tethering
Keeping in mind that the phone will shut its self down (it should) if your battery starts to over heat. On my Hero the charge light flashes before it shuts down and it gets really hot to the touch. Also at higher heat temps, overall battery life suffers.
my phones shuts down usually when wifi is on and im sirfing or using youtube app or google maps(every time i use wifi for a while this happens...)
it also shuts down rarely on calls and sometimes when im trying to flash a new rom...
it doesnt powers on until i connect it on AC...
I REALLY NEED HELP...
ps:if i change the battery will my problem been solved?

it turns off randomly...even when im just browsing through the home screens... a full charge will last me like 5 minutes max.... no matter what im doing an the battery doesnt overheat at all...
and when i plug it in to the charger, it shows the correct percentage.. well at least an estimate of what it could be (for about 5 min of use before shut down= 95%)
I have the same problem, It is extremely frustrating.
The shutdowns would happen randomly during surfing the net or using google maps. It would shut down out of no where and it would be impossible to turn back without being plugged into a charger since the phone thinks it battery is at 0 even it was just charged to full before the shutdown. I tried to calibrate the battery but it would just shut down while I'm trying to burn through the charge with the screen on. This is the such a nuisance, can't even get through one day.
I am using biffmod 1.8 so I don't know if this is a rom related problem.
I'm havuing the exact same problem. Even with a full battery, the pgone will shut down when I do anything more than a text or two here and there. When I put it on the charger I will still have a significant amount of power left. I've tried doing full wipes and changing roms. I think it might actually be related to the radio. This began after I updated the radio. It would get stck on formatting the cache. I tried going back to the old radio, but the problem has persisted.. and it also got stuck on formatting cache...
I hope someone can help with this bc it pretty much renders the phone useless when it's not being charged. =\
try change the battery...this solve my prob
you could try recalibrating the battery.
let your phone die.
plug it in for so long that you are 100% sure that it is full.
boot to recovery wipe battery stats.
boot normal
use it and let it die.
recharge again until its full BEFORE booting it.
if you sure its full boot normal.
if you follow this cycle some times it should be fine.
Only issue: you have to wait long until its full and you always have to be near an ac
i've tried re-callibration.. guess i will have to get another battery..
i don't think it's the battery though bc others with the same problem said that the problem persisted after getting a new battery.. =\ we'll see.. thanks for the replies.

Captivate Battery Issue Investigation

I am starting this thread so folks that are having batery life issues on their Captiates can post their findings.
Captivate users are getting mixed battery life with the stock and custom ROMs. Let's see if we can't get the problem narrowed down. Whether it's an issue with Battery Stats or possible a bad batch of batteries, whatever the case let's get this settled and resolved once and for all.
When posting, please include some basics about your device. We all know it's a Captivate, this is the Captivate forum, duh! But let's include ROM name, if custom, use STOCK for Stock. Date stamp on your battery, any custom apps and your basic settings.
Let's narrow this down.
Thanks.
Steven Perry
Prsonally I am running Cognition 2.2 Beta 7. Have had the same problem with all prior ROMs as well as stock.
Have tried completely draining, recharging with device off, reset battery stats. No luck, same result. I leave the house at 5:30a, am down to 70% by the time I get to work. By 5:00p it's dead if I don't plug it in.
My next step is to try buying a new battery. See if that helps.
Anyone have any other ideas?

These always are the same no matter what device i have lol. Same topics always pop up
I have used the idea of draining battery completely and then plugging it in and letting it charge overnight powered off. Worked great for me.

I tried that, no luck for me.
I had the same issue earlier.
I noticed that my battery life came back to normal once I stopped using ADW and disabled automatic sync for my corporate (exchange ) email account in @email.
(I am currently using TW Launcher with Cognition 2.2 Beta 6).
I can get on avg. 12-18hrs of battery life... with light use.
For my everyday typical type of usage? About 10hrs with moderate usage.
But.. let's say I'm stuck in a waiting room somewhere for a few hours? With heavy use - even with the screen dimmed - I can get 4hrs out of the device.
Bottom line.. no matter how hard I tweak this thing - the display just eats the battery like a fat kid at an all-you-can-eat buffet. So I just keep it hooked up whenever I'm at a computer... which is my job so quite a bit
My first captivate stock, I was easily getting 18-24 hours.
After having it replaced with another one, I'm getting less than 8 hours.
The only differences is that the second one was updated to JH7 using Samsung Kies

Hi mate I have a galaxy s I used to get a days usage from the battery with heavy usage so I bought a 3000mah expanded one from Amazon.co.uk i haven't completely set the battery up yet it has only had one full charge and one full discharge but it lasts two days now with heavy usage games, movies and allot of web and app browsing maybe you should try one.
The battery comes with a new back cover and obviously makes the phone fatter but it is easier to hold and not really that heavy.

+1
It's all in the screen usage. I'm also using setCPU which helps the standby time significantly.
I have gotten a full 21 hours on this phone. But that is with probably what most would consider light usage. Maybe a few texts, some checking via XDA app, updating Facebook, playing a few games for about 30 minutes, but then when I sleep, I leave it unplugged, but turn off Wifi/Mobile Data and Autosync. When I'm at work, I leave those on. My display is always set to auto brightness, with the time out at 15 seconds.
Running Cognition 2.2 Beta 7 and I don't seem to have a dat of manufacture on these eBay batteries. My stock one is at work, so when I get there tonight, I'll update this post.
But like someone else said, I think it's all within the idea of what one calls moderate use. If I am using my phone a lot, the life goes does dramatically. My phone probably sits more than it is used, therefore that's why my battery life is so long. I'm happy with a baseline of 8-10 hours on this, since I have multiple opportunities to either plug it in, or switch to a fresh battery.
Could someone plz share ur batterystat file?
By bettery life is BAD now..
It goes down like crazy..
And fully charged in 6 hours from 0%.
I sun think this is normal status..
I tried everything but still the same..
Wanna try to copy someone's stat file to see how that works for me.

[SOLVED]Unable to calibrate battery on 2.2.1 based ROMs

I am facing a rather "cruel" issue with my phone of late.
I am unable to calibrate my battery ever since I installed 2.2.1 based ROM. It goes upto 98% properly, and then within a minute or two shows me the "charged" message. When I pull the charger plug out, it immediately falls back to 98%.
I tried charging fully with phone on, then off, wiping battery stats using both sgs tools and CWM console more than half a dozen times till now, but am still facing this issue.
I even tried changing the battery, but even then am facing the issue. Also tried the total discharge and total charge method.
Could anyone help me please.
Note: I tried like 2 different 2.2.1 based ROMs.
in another thread someone mentioned it being a bug with all 2.2.1 roms. I'm dealing with it too. Best thing to do is use a battery theme that doesn't show the percentage that way its not bugging you. 1-2% means nothing.

I got this app called "Battery Booster" from market y'day. I started it, and put the screen "never off" and then had it on charge. It took like a good 20-30 mins to come from 98 to 99 to 100. And then it came to "charged". It stayed at 100% after I pulled the cable off.
But then, it was back to normal 98% behavior when the turned the app off.
One thing I could notice was that, once the charge hit 98%, and the turned off the screen, the "charged" message comes in under a minute. But with screen on, it took more than 20 mins.
Thread can be closed.
Looks this is a known non-issue in 2.2.1 and some latest kernels to help avoid battery overcharging.

[Q] Captivate Battery and Serendipity

Hi folks.
Sorry if this is a redundant question or thread, I have used the search feature and am not getting the results I want. Furthermore I have a 2 year old and 9 month old hanging on my legs here and just need an answer so again apologies if this is redundant.
I have had my Captivate for about 5 days now. I rooted it and installed Serendipity 5.3 ROM. Today I noticed my battery went from 100% to 5% in 4 hours. Is this normal?
I got home and updated Serendipity to 5.4 and then 5.5 but not sure if that will fix the battery issue. The day before I ran the battery all day 10 hours and I was at 35% which to me was normal as my iPhone 4 had the same performance. But 100-5% in 4 hours seems a bit strange.
Any help would be appreciated sorry for the long post I need to get back to my kids.
Thanks!
4 hours for almost 100% battery usage is not normal.
check your wifi setting, gps setting first.
Sounds to me like your battery needs a calibration. It's generally a good idea to re-calibrate your battery after flashing. I generally get 20hrs on my Captivate with Serendipity 5.2 with average usage.
Check out this thread.

Now that one kid is asleep and the other on her way....what is the optimal wi-fi setting for best battery life and the same for gps?
Also, I looked at that thread and I am in process of trying it out integrasaurus.
This is my first time with an Android phone, I came from an iPhone 4 jailbroken so I am an Android virgin and 5 days old.
I also want to say I am sorry about starting a thread if this topic was hit on already. I have been around forums a long time and I know how frustrating it is when noobs do these things so I thought I'd offer my sincerest apologies for doing what I would get mad at too.
usually after you flash a new rom, the gps is set to on. turn it off if you are not using it;
go to settings->wireless and network->wi-fi settings, then click menu to bring up the advanced->in the wi-fi sleep policy->make sure select "when screen turns off";
go to settings->applications->samsung apps->make sure it is "off"

I got the wi-fi taken care of though thanks for that.
It was strange today though, I plugged the phone in to wall ac and it took forever (5hours) to charge from 5% to 40% and then drained in less than an hour back to 5%.
Its charging now and has been on my usb port for 2 hours and its up to 72% from 4%.
That was also a confusing mystery.
Hey guys, just want to say thanks again. I'm still working on calibrating batt but I after reading some more in the forums (kids finally both in bed and OUT) I discovered that I had 2 task killers installed and that these apps are battery killers (at least in some opinions).
I uninstalled them and charging seems to be moving faster than before. I will let you know how things go.
Thanks again!
I am running Serendipity 5.5 and my battery typically lasts between 26-30 hours with normal use. I don't use any task killers, but if you have your task killers set to be too aggressive I'm sure that would drain the battery pretty fast. I'd suggest just ditching them completely though, as I get over a day's battery without trying to manage all of that.
Also, check if ur gallery has the sensor bug. U can find this out under battery usage using the SPARE PARTS app.

yup, I deleted them already. I believe that was the cause of the sudden change in life, as I didnt have many problems before them.
After my battery cal I have been running the phone on and off normal use for over an hour. Battery is now at 95%, started at 100%.
I see improvements already, but will hold off saying its fixed completely until I can give it a day or two of testing.

sometimes the thumnails get corrupt which eats battery while trying to load and need to be "refreshed" a simple way to do this is in the app SGS TOOLS run the script "clean_thumb_db.txt" this should fix gallery issues.
Thanks for this info. This will be something I will keep an eye on for sure. Phone is still above 90% after over 2 hours. Hoping the calibration and deletion of task killers did the trick.

Charge battery 100% then some... Power off phone and let charge longer... Boot into Clockwork and reset battery stats.... Run the phone a few charges and you should be gold.... Under normal/light use I can get 1.5 days out of my battery...
Also check your wireless settings. Try setting them to turn off wireless when the screen is off. That was a huge battery drain for me.
Thanks to all here for the help and thoughts.
So last night I
1. Got rid of task killers
2. Updated Serendipity from 5.3 to 5.5
3. Adjusted wireless settings
4. Calibrated battery
I finished all this at 8:15pm CST and the phone has been unplugged since then, with moderate use between 8:15 and 10:15pm. It is now 7am CST and the phone is at 63% power which is a huge improvement from yesterday.
I am convinced it was the task killers that had the most drain on the battery.
I will give it one or two more days and see how performance is then and let you know.
You guys rock!
Back on Serendipity 4.3, while OC/UVing I could get about 25-28 hours with normal use, texting throughout the day, occasional calls.
Now that I'm on 5.5, I am getting about 28-32 hours, still OC/UVing.
Also, I use advanced task manager, and it doesn't kill my battery at all. Any more than other apps at least.
Glad everything is working out for you iDroidd!
..Now back to flashing lol.

[Q] Battery life very random - Is it fixable

Hi all, I'm very sorry in advance if this is already covered somewhere but I couldn't locate
I have 2 problems - I've had my I9000 for 2 years now. The battery life was very random some days would last the day other times a few hours (same usage) so I got a new battery about 5 months ago. There wasn't any improvement. Now its worse.
I'm lucky to get 2 hours use out of it sometimes it dies as soon as unplugging from charger even though it's at 100%. Sometimes it just dies with no warning with plenty of charge left .. switch back on and batt life down to a few % and all other variants in between
So my first question is - Is this fixable with software changes and if so please direct me with best solution
My other problem is the home button doesn't work anymore or at least I didn't think it did until recently I pressed fairly hard and moved my thumb around and it suddenly worked (have to do this each time now) - after some research I've come to the conclusion that these buttons if any damp/moisture gets underneath it can corrode and my wife uses it in the bath all the time. Understand would be tricky and I'm sure I could pull it off but is it possible to take apart and clean?
Thanks in advance for any assistance possible and again sorry if same issues already posted/answered
What ROM are you on? This behaviour is really weird... What happens if you charge your phone while it is turned off?
To the 2nd question: There are CM9/10 ROMs with touch buttons implemented, so that shouldn't be a too big problem.

Hi and thanks for your reply, currently on (bear with me if not all info needed)
Firmware 2.3.6
baseband I9000BUJV4
Kernal 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVU-CL851880 [email protected] #2
Build GINGERBREAD.BUJVG
Note I did root my phone and used the 'No-frills CPU Control' so see if this would have any effect on battery life but no change
Also there is no difference if charge whilst switched off or on - It has the same temperamental behaviour
Thanks in advance
There are some battery calibration apps in Play Store. Try one of them when your phone is 100% charged. Furthermore I'd recommend flashing a completely new ROM to be sure nothing is left. Then calibrate again.
I'm sorry, I can only give advices since I've never heard or read about that problem before.

There is a thread somewhere about the solution of the home button problem. I'll help you find the thread.
As for the battery, I suggest that you install a new custom ROM. There are lots for your phone, so anything is possible and up to you. You should try flashing, its fun.
