I changed my splash screen using the herc.img method - The only downside I see to this is not being able to boot into recovery mode by pressing the volume down key and the power key at the same time - I can obviously boot into recovery mode via alternate methods - like if I am already powered up by using Quick Boot or if my phone is off, I can use adb reboot recovery and that works -
but I'm thinking more along the lines of if I need to get into recovery and I am not at home and can not get to a computer -
any other ways that work?
you can't get into the hboot screen?
You can access recovery by pressing POWER and holding the HOME button.
But if you can't access hboot/fastboot screen...that seems like a much bigger problem to me.
Should have nothing to do with the splash screen. I changed mine, and can access fast boot and recovery fine

Please disregard....I figured out what to do...

My wifes hero has stopped booting. no biggie, I was going to put CM6 on it anyways. The problem, though, is that she managed to break the volume down button somehow. I dont know how to get it into recovery now. I cant hold volume down and power it up, and I cant force it into recovery from the ROM itself.
Are there any other methods?
Edit: Ignore this, I managed to get in there with a razor blade and pop the volume down button up. Seems as though it was jammed. Are there any other methods for getting to recovery though?
You can do it via adb if you are at your computer or if you download Rom manager it has the option built in.... also, quick boot from the market can do it too

Home key + power takes you directly to recovery.
Or terminal emulator. Just type reboot recovery and hit enter.

Sorry if this question is a disturbance. I tried to search for the solution for my problem about a week, but nothing comes up.
I'm a Nexus One new user. My problem is that I can't access recovery mode. I have rooted and installed flash recovery image to my phone. But when I access recovery mode from bootloader menu (surely pressing volume down + power), the logo X appears on the screen for few seconds, then, the screen goes blank. No recovery menu appears. I must press Home + Power to choose reboot or power down to start my phone again. I tried amon-ra v.1..7.0 to v. 1.9 and clockworkmod v.2.5.0.7, but my phone screen still goes blank. Now I'm in despair and don't know what to do. I want to change my rom, but I can't if my phone can't access recovery mode.
Anybody help me please.
I had the same problem after allowing Clockwork to access ROM in its submenu.
I used the following instructions to flashboot the recovery-RA-nexus-v.1.9.0-alpha.img
back into the N1 (blue care bear one).

You need to download the SDK too to do this, but I'm guessing you already have that
Try Clockwork 2.5.11. It's been updated to support SLCD Nexus Ones. You can flash it straight from ROM Manager.

Thank you both of you. I have tried following the second post and it works!
Here's my dilemma. I flashed CM7 RC4 to my n1 last night, now it is stuck in a loop of the boot animation and will not proceed any further. I'd boot into the bootloader, but my power button's been dead for a month, ADB won't recognize my phone to reboot-bootloader. Am I boned?
Pull the battery, connect your phone to a charger then hold the trackball while re-inserting the battery. Make take a few attempts, but it should eventually boot into fastboot. You could also hold volume down instead of the trackball if you just want hboot...

Now i'm getting the battery indicator flashing green/orange. I can mess with it until I eventually get it charging solid. Is there any quick workaround for this?
Now I'm in fastboot. Is there a way to get into recovery without power button?
Is your bootloader unlocked?

yes. indeed it is. If it helps, I have the latest CWM installed.
Place a copy of your recovery image in your sdk tools folder, connect via fastboot and type:
fastboot boot name-of-recovery.img
(use the real name of your recovery image)

I knew that. I'm a tard. Thanks.

What steps should I take to force recovery mode if I have an EVO? I've tried holding volume up while power but it vibrates three times and does nothing. I'm stuck in the boot loader screen.
*-**EDIT
I was able to fix it doing a hard reset.
Turn the power off. If your HTC EVO 4G is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
Hold the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button
You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button
Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
Hey guys, sorry for the cliche first post, but believe me I have been searching and reading all night and day for a problem similar to mine.
I was running CM9 on my Droid 3 and was having trouble because my phone kept running in safe mode, which was causing some of my apps to not work, and when I turned safe mode off, it ran the stock droid OS, which I didn't want. Therefore, I manually turned my safestrap off (first mistake) so now I can't get into it. Alternatively, my volume down button doesn't seem to be working so I can't select AP Fastboot to flash my phone back to factory settings and eliminate all my woes. When I try to power my phone on manually, all it does is load me into the BP Flash screen, which to my understanding doesn't work (why did they put it in?). I've tried to press the down direction key and power to shortcut into AP Fastboot, as well as power button volume down, neither of which work. I can get into the screen with Normal boot, recovery, etc but cannot select anything, and it just goes to normal boot and proceeds to bootloop. Is there anything I can do in this predicament? Any help is much appreciated.
If you can, try using the keyboard arrow keys to navigate the boot menu.. I've never tried it before but its worth a shot.

Hi, I'm in the middle of rooting a Milestone for a friend and can't get past the part of the guide where the device is booted into recovery mode and the volume up and camera buttons are pressed as the volume up key on his handset is broken. Is there any way to get around this? Either a software method to get around the volume key being pressed, or a way to actually fix the keys?
Well if you get the phone into bootloader you can adb reboot into recovery hope it helps
