My captivate was running Cog 2.2 Beta5.5. I tried to undo lagfix before updating to beta6, but it failed. So I decided to flash back to stock 2.1 then upgrade to Cog.
Problems appeared when Odin stopped at setting pit file. This happened several times before so that I unplugged my phone and tried to get into download and flash again. However, the volume button combination does not work this time. So I could not flash the phone again.
The current status of the phone is:
No AT&T screen at startup, just displays the phone and computer
Cannot enter downloand mode by holding down both volume button then plug-in cable
and obviously the computer does not recognize the device when connected.
Is there still a way to get the phone into download mode (or anything else that could unbrick it)?
Thanks a lot!

Yeah it should be recoverable but I'm wondering what I can do with the phone as I cannot access download...

I had this problem a few days ago after updating to 2.2. I tried every single button/usb/battery combo and nothing worked. FORTUNATELY I was within 30 days of purchasing it (I guess there's a silver lining when diving right into "hacking"), and I brought it to the store with the box and receipt and just told them it gave me an error when turning it on (played dumb) and they swapped it out without even testing. If you're over the 30 days then I think you're pretty much SOL... gotta pay for a replacement.

just pull the usb from the phone & the battery, replace the battery, then open odin 1 click, then hold both vol buttons, while holding the vol buttons, insert usb.
repeat till it gets into download mode. sometimes I walk away for a few minutes, then try again. suddenly it works. make sure you use the usb port that works for your phone, on my netbook only 1 of the usb ports works for the phone.
1. Unplug USB
2. Pull battery
3. Put battery back in
4. Reconnect the USB
5. Open odin one click
6. Wait for battery icon to show
7. Hold Volume up & Down and power
screen will go to att screen, or computer + Phone screen. Then it'll go back to the battery screen. Keep holding till you see it go black again, Then let go of power, still holding volume keys.
That should do it. Keep trying you'll get the hang of it quickly.

This look like the key combination to enter Rocovery mode
My phone does not show the battery icon now. After applying step 4 the computer+phone screen comes up.
Nope, it's for download. Trust me, I've had to do it enough. That's ok, you can follow the same steps from the phone+PC screen. Just let it go black, then back to the screen, then black a second time before letting go.
Again, USB MUST be plugged in at this time for it to work.

Thank you.
BTW how many times of reboot before u got into Download?
Two questions:
Have you been able to use the three button method to get into download or recovery before now?
Did you ever apply the JH7 firmware OTA update from AT&T to your phone?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Basically let it reboot once and as soon as the second time comes that's when you let go of power. Previous poster has a good point too, some firmware updates are known to "break" the 3 button combo.
Have you pulled the SIM and any SD card you have installed? Try that too. I couldn't get it into download, then pulled everything out, put battery in, started up ODIN, held in vol buttons, inserted USB and yay, fixed.
If you open ODIN while phone is connected or disconnect then reconnect USB while ODIN is open, you will never get it right, FYI...
I had to do it with ODIN opened first, then volume buttons, then USB. Any screw ups and you have to start over.
All cards were removed and I used the original cable as well but I still could not get out of the phone and computer screen...
Shipped the phone for exchange...
Might have been able to get into download mode by holding the volume buttons inserting the USB and popping the battery back in.
That's how I got lucky today.

which ODIN are you trying to use?
if you are using regular ODIN and not one click, are you giving it the files it needs to flash or are you leaving everything blank?
if you are using one click or regular, make sure ODIN is open first!

Download Mode
Ok guys I think I found something that we were missing. There is a little brass "button" its about the size of a ball point pen. If you have the battery case off then the button is not "pressed". What I did was push the button in. Hold down up and down then insert the usb cable and BAM download mode.
Just an fyi. It worked for me to get into download mode.

I'm trying to unbrick my phone too. All I get with the Odin One-Click is "Get PIT for mapping..." It stays there forever. Someone help please.

Hi there-
My phone appears to be dead, completely. I've tried to reflash it using Odin3 One click downloader, it started normally but then in the middle the phone's screen turned pink and stayed there for like 10 minutes until I disconnected the cable then took the battery out/in. Next attempt to boot my phone was unsuccessful, in fact my phone wouldn't boot at all. I've tried different button combinations but nothing helps. The phone remains dead. Is there something I can do about it or it is over for me?
Any response would be greatly appreciated.
so with the phone off, odin open, and you hold vol up/down, then plug your usb into the phone, you get nothing? Odin doesn't even see the phone?
is your phone less than 30 days old? If so, take it into AT&T and say the OTA update bricked it.

Nope, nothing works. The only combination that does something is volup/power - it brings a few red lines:
RST_STAT =0x1
PMIC_IRQ =0x3c

I was finally able to get to download mode and then Odin3 did its trick.
The strange part that I've used Odin3 something like 10 times before and never had this issue. By keep pushing phone's buttons I was finally able to get a "magic" combination, which took me directly to download mode. After that Odin3 restore went 100% as usual. Sorry, that I can't give more info.
OK, I've been reading here for 6 days all manner of Captivate unbricking. Here is my story...
I picked up a Captivate on the Rogers network. I connected it to my email server (Exchange 2010) with no problems, poked around, noticed the lag, noticed the SMS time issue, then promptly rooted, installed clockwork, and then threw cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much faster it was.
Anyways, after a day of poking around, I could not get my email to my exchange server running (tried the email.pak floating about), so I actually decided I was going to go back to the backup I made of my phone using clockwork before I installed cognition. When I restored my backup, I thought I had bricked my phone.
I let it rest for a day, then came back here, and found one of the 3-4 different variations of the 4 button download mode combo that permitted me to do the 1 click restore. This restored me to the AT&T version of 2.1. It worked, but was less than desirable.
I decided that at that point I really wanted to go back to stock, so I downloaded the stock backup on the Rogers Captivate wiki page, and did the restore using clockwork. The phone has not been the same since.
When i turn it on, I get an at&t splash screen, then in about 20 seconds I get the at&t "jingle", but the splash screen stays on. I can't seem to find any key combination that will permit me to get back into download mode so I can restore using the One Click that worked for me the first time. I have tried:
1. 3 button salute with USB in first, battery out initially.
2. 3 button salute with USB plugged in *as* I was inserting the battery.
3. Power and volume down (both with and without USB, and with battery being plugged in after USB and "during" insertion of battery)
4.Power and volume up with same combo's as #3.
5. Just volume up and volume down with same combo's as #3.
In all cases Odin was running before USB connected, running as administrator. I'm running 64bit windows, but I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I did this the first time with Odin and download mode and I haven't added or changed anything. But just for arguements sake I did uninstall, and then install the drivers again.
Any combination of power and volume buttons just gives me a battery charging logo. Occasionally when holding up until the second black screen I will get a quick indication that the computer might see something, but it dissappears withing a handful of seconds showing it promptly removed.
I'm downloading the Android SDK in the hopes that when I get the normal at&t splash screen after the "jingle" that something might actually be running in the background and maybe I can adb reboot download it but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyone seen this that has managed to get out of it? I'm starting to think the "unbrickable captivate" can be bricked. Assuming it is bricked, short of taking it back, is there anyone on the internet that can jtag these and in some fashion bring back to life?
Cheers,
Tim

and download mode is easy.
1. start odin3 and have data cable plugged into the computer
2. insert proper files if needed
3. hold volume up and volume down for 2 sec (no power button needed) then insert usb cable, continue to hold volumes till either the download mode screen pops up or odin3 sees the phone(if you bork the phone bad enough you can corrupt the download mode image, i did it with the not to successfull manhatten project kernel) but despite the screen being black it very well may be in download mode.
4. start flash
5. if it doesn't work send it to me ill find a use for it
alternatively if the phone can go passed the splash screens and boots fully you can adb reboot download. just get the development kit and drivers on your pc.

just to be clear, you are holding volume up as well as volume down starting with the phone being powered down and continue to hold them after you plug in usb untill something shows on the screen?
if your phone is not seeing the volumes buttons you are one of the very unlucky few that had a problem at the most inopportune moment.
there is also a way where you hold all three buttons till the phone reboots twice, or something. let me try it and ill give more specifics.

Pull the battery, open odin, plug usb into computer, hold vol up and down, plug usb into phone still holding vol buttons, drop in battery still holding vol buttons, when dl screen pops up and yellow com port lights up in odin release volume buttons. Do not touch power button at any time

Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode instead of download mode? Stock recovery is adb-ready and you should be able to adb reboot download. Its a long shot if you're having problems using button combo to get to d/l mode, but it's probably still worth a shot at this point.
If you were able to use 3 button combos before all this happened, and did NOT have to install the 3 button combo fix, its strange you don't have access to it now... Could restoring a Rogers Cappy to AT&T stock be the problem?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I do this:
1. everything pulled (battery, USB, sim, sd)
2. Open Oden (1 click)
3. Install battery
4. hold down (and keep holding) volume up and volume down
5. insert USB cable
6. depress (i.e. don't hold) power button
Goes straight to battery charging indicator.
If I swap #6 with holding the power button down, it continually reboots while just barely showing the battery charging indicator. I've tried letting go between black screens on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th black screen. Still no android dude with the shovel.
Try all the steps you stated but not the last one where you press the power button. Don't press the power button.

Trying to get into recovery mode gets me the at&t logo and the "jingle", but no recovery mode menu to reboot, etc.
This is what I'm worried about, restoring the Rogers stock over top of the Odin 1 click restore (which is an AT&T image) has bricked it and prevents download mode from invoking.

I know, I played with adb before I bricked it. ADB needs to "see" the phone, it no longer sees it (I have three computers, all three can't see it, but they can see my friends cappy with no problems first time, every time). Same process for his phone works every time to get into download mode, but not on mine.
And yes, have tried other USB ports on the same computer, both on the mainboard, and on the front ports.
Keep the ideas coming though please, I will try every one.

There's a trick to prompt download mode through a "jig" which you can hack together for about $2 in parts and a sacrificial microUSB cable...it works on the other SGSes, but I think it should work on the Captivate as well. Never tried it personally...

Oh, nevermind, found it in the i9000 forum. Will test first thing in the morning!
Cheers,
I bricked one today as well. Exactly what you are talking about here. The only thing is that i was still under the 30days so i swapped it out for a new one. As of right now ive been debating whether i want to do the voodoo fix (which i think is what bricked it to begin with)
Got a new phone
This isn't really great advice, but, if the bootloader is toast, there is a good chance you can get it fixed under warranty as Samsung won't be able to tell what you had on it.
You could try making the jig as the parts are cheap, but not much chance if your cappy is unresponsive.
There is also the aftermarket jtag option. It's expensive, but should work. You may be able to find someone with it. Seeing as your reward offer is half the price of one, it probably wouldn't be out of line as far as somebody offering that service.
I am assuming you have already done this and just forgot to mention it but try pulling sd card and sim for a few. Pulling only the battery does not always work for me

Where are you located?
There was one time I really screwed the pooch with Odin and my phone ended up with a black screen & unresponsive. The JIG did manage to pull me out of it, I'm very certain the "your mileage may vary" line is applicable here.
I heard that even if the screen is black if you see it in odin you can use it. I would use odin one click. Good luck.

Insert battery and release only the power button at the same time and keep holding volume up/down buttons. Let drivers insall if they aren't on your computer. Press download.

well That is one of the reason why we need to know what happens when your phone is plugged in via USB ...
Here is my advice : unless you are experienced with the Jig ( you ve restored your phone at least once using it already ) I say try again and again
For example : these resistor sometimes have 5% variation so for me the 301k wasnt working had to put it at 300 otherwise it wouldnt work ..
would also like top point out the jig does trigger soemtign in your phone so again even if nothing shows up on the screen try to flash anyways ...
BTW you shoudl remove the bounty and just offer it once you have beenhelped , I doubt anyone here is in it for the money (except me of course ) j/k
For dead screen, try this. It sounds like voodoo but it got me going.
Remove the battery.
Open Odin.
Connect via USB
Plug the battery in.
Hold down POWER and VOLUP until you get RED text on the screen. This will look bad, but is in fact a good thing. This can take 20-30 seconds.
Once the red text is up, hold down BOTH VOL buttons and POWER. Again this part will seem to take too long, but the red text will go black after a bit.
When the red text goes black, let go of POWER but continue to hold down both VOL.
Welcome to download mode.

For dead screen, try this. It sounds like voodoo but it got me going.

So I was attempting to flash back to stock with Odin (I was using Assonance 5.2). I turned the phone off, then while holding the volume buttons plugged in the USB like normal. Then Odin said added the phone, then I hit start. And it seemed like it was working just fine, then all of a sudden the screen on the phone turned red. Then the status bar on Odin stopped moving completely (stayed for awhile). So I think I made the next big mistake of just disconnecting the USB and taking out the battery. So now the phone won't turn on. So I'm not sure I hard bricked the phone or what? Anyone have any idea? Thanks!
I've plugged the phone into the outlet charger, still nothing happens. This happened like maybe 15 min ago. No action when plugged in the computer or charger. Can't even boot into recovery I don't think. the power button was giving me some trouble earlier today. whenever I was trying to wake the phone up, it seemed to take a few clicks of the power button to wake the phone. This happened only after I flashed Assonance 2.5, so I wanted to flash to an earlier version of the rom. thanks!
What you want to do is get into Download Mode, and flash with Odin One-Click JF6 to get your phone working again..
Have you tried all the various button combos to get into Download Mode? .
If the button combos don't work, you can always try to build/buy a JIG which will force your phone into Download if it's still possible on your phone.
I've tried to get into download mode, but can't seem to do it. I've tried holding the volume up and down button then plugging in the usb (which didn't work). then i tried the taking the battery out, then holding the volume up and down button and power button, then plugging in the usb, then reinserting the battery, then taking my hand off the power button (which didn't work). what is the JIG method?
edit. ok i have no clue wtf just happened, but i am currently in download mode using odin and flashing back to stock.....this is just too weird.....sooo any rom suggestions?

Definitely a great idea having the jig. Nor cal can attest to the late night save that jig provided me.

I was flashing this 3 button fix with Clockworkmod recovery. After applying the update from zip, everything seemed to be working fine, so I pulled the battery so I could test it out without having to use CWR's reboot option, then waiting for it to boot and shut off. When I tried to turn it back on, nothing happened. I tried to boot it with the recovery 3 button combo and it didn't respond(still a completely black screen).
Also, I'm not sure whether or not CWR was actually flashed. I was accessing using the update.zip found in this thread. When booting into recovery, I got into the normal recovery screen, and it was only after I hit "reinstall packages" that I got into CWR. It was through this method that I tried to install the 3-button fix.
What I've tried:
This key combo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
The phone didn't respond at all.
Switching the battery for a fully charged one. Still no response.
Inserted my homemade USB jig to no avail. I've tested it with a different Captivate and I've confirmed that it works.
Anyone got any ideas or "magic" key combos I should try. If not, would it be possible to send it into Samsung/AT&T and get it repaired/replaced?
EDIT: I think I'm in the same situation as these guys: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977086
It's a build 1008 that I'm working with.
I'm on a similar issue. Phone is dead, no response to anything at all. Not even my previous jig that I used last time.
But it happened while I was flashing with Odin one click. Got stuck at the factoryfs.rfs step. Had to unplug it but after that I never came back up
I ordered a premade usb jig, and it'll arrive next week. If that doesn't work then I'm thinking of getting a cheap one off ebay, I can't spend another $500 considering this phone is only 4 months old.
The other choice is getting a broken phone for even less money, and replace the motherboard. But I don't know if there are considerable differences between phone batches.
I'll be Android-less for the next two weeks though, and that truly sucks.
Which build is your phone? It's located behind the battery to the left of one of the barcodes. I've heard that 2010 and 2012 break when used with odin one click.
Have you guys tried the volume up and down trick right after you put battery back in while its connected by usb to the PC? I bricked my phone to the point where it would not even turn on and finally was able to get it back into download by using that method. Kind of tricky but you plug phone into usb to pc. Take battery out, while holding volume up and down put battery in and keep holding until download screen comes up. I hope that works for you, if you havent tried yet
I have gone so far as to brick my phone to the point where it would not turn on. After a few hours it was only a screen RST_STATUS 0x0. The one post you linked says to hold vol up/down and power. But try not pressing power..only up and down. I could not get mine to do anything until I tried someone else's method of not pressing power and only volume buttons
I had a soft brick last night. Phone would start with Phone ++ PC connect picture, nothing else. And here's what I did to get into Download:
- Pull SIM out
- Pull MicroSD out
- Pull Battery out
- Put Battery back in
- Hold Vol Down button (only the vol down)
- Plug USB cable in
- Phone boots into Download mode
The 3-button or Vol UP and DN key trick didn't work. Only the Vol DN and USB plug-in worked for me. I hope you have good luck.
My first time using Odin One Click presented me with a similar situation, stalled after it said "DO NOT UNPLUG..." ... I don't have a Jig but nothing else I tried was working...Held down power button to be presented with a black screen, no backlight or anything...
Pulled the battery out, waited a full 30 seconds (battery pulls less than that didn't work for me) and put it back in, Volume Up + Down and plugged in USB and it worked.
Best of luck to you. I was feeling kind of queasy after finding out my first attempt at flashing could have been disastrous.
If you are hard bricked and have no response even with a JIG, I can still fix it for you. Just PM me for questions...
This happened a few times to me. I remove the battery, open odin one click, hold up and down vol buttons, then plug in the usb cable. It typically throws me.back into dl mode. Be sure you are using JV6 (see Icezar's post in Dev section) when going back to stock because it doesnt include bootloaders and makes hard bricking less likely.

Hi
I tried upgrading from ice cream sandwich to jellybean and ended up bricking my phone when the flashing failed and I panicked and unplugged my phone. I think it failed because i was flashing something for a different model rather than the i1900t as this is the New Zealand/Australian model. I cant find any button combos that will put my phone into download mode and the phone doesn't turn on. The only life that it seems to exhibit is get warm around the sim card area when i put the battery in. Help.

Download mode is vol down+power on the GB bootloaders. But if a JIG doesn't get you in download mode, there are 2 possible reasons: 1st- Battery isn't charged. 2nd- Your phone is bricked.
If it's the 2nd one then your only hope is with mobiletechvideos .com (Connexion2005 on xda). He can use his JTAG to push the GB bootloaders into your phone.
