Supposedly Clockwork recovery works on the milestone according to the developer

Interesting. Regardless, it's only a matter of time before the exploit for the Droid X gets ported over to our Milestones!
I just tried the Clockwork Recovery, but the Milestone doesn't accept it because the signature was not correct.

I can confirm it starts up now, you have to move it to /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates, then in your OpenRecovery menu, launch it from Miscellaneous-->Apply update
It's the same as OpenRecovery almost, I don't know what else to do..
Well that's interesting that it actually works! Got further than me
But could we not flash this as the default recovery rather than having to apply the update.zip and then updating via the recovery?
Sorry to resurrect, but can you confirm that Clockwork works on Milestone, and subsequently ROM Manager as well (since it only works with Clockwork).
Also, what are the differences btwn G.O.T. (which I'm using now) and Clockwork, and which do you prefer?
Thx

essentially its only the same concept , afaik clockwork uses sprecovery we use 'adb recovery' so what we call nandroid backup is not compatible form one another .
essentially they are no benefits of using either ..except for the fact that Openrecovery was built for the milestone . ie there is no reason at allto try and use anthing else .
Got ' OR is not the only one around , they are a few , its only a question of taste witch one you prefer , although the recovery loader built in GOT's allows you to load any recovery you want from within GOT's witch makes it my favorite choice ..

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
I just got my Nexus about a week ago and I've pretty much figured the phone out by now. However one Issue I have is with the You Tube application.(part of the firmware)
I will get a still image of the video and audio on You Tube at first. Then when I select watch in normal quality the application either stop responding or I get and error message saying the video can't be played.
I was told by the guy who sold me the phone that it used to have Cyanogen installed on it but now it currently has the shipping (stock) ROM installed on it using AmonRA as the bootloader. He got the phone directly from Google when they first came out.
Suggestions ?
Reinstall Youtube app?
I wish I could or knew how. It's part of the firmware. There isn't even an option to get rid of it as it does not show up under the list of installed aps.
Grab the updated version from the Market.
I already tried that and it's not showing me a you tube aplication.

Is the boot-loader unlocked?
Is the phone rooted?
I'm assuming since you said it has CM7 on it, that the boot-loader is unlocked.
In this case you could try flashing a different ROM that has gapps bundled into it, or just flash over the gapps zip.
The phone is NOT rooted as I ran test using a app called Android Terminal Emulator and typed in "SU" I got back "permission denied" I have no idea if the bootloader is unlocked. For flashing ..Well I've never flashed a phone before so I would have no idea what I was doing or how to do it.

Try the attachment I uploaded, its the new YouTube app. Took it straight from my phone.
Just copy to SD card, and use a file manager to install it.
Using astro file manager and when I select open with app manager it says it cannot open the file you uploaded for me. I tried a different file manager and this one said it had problem parsing the file.
Hmmm. Sounds like some type of data loss when downloading the file. Try redownloading again. I just download it and it worked fine for me. Also, could try downloading it through the xda app on the market. Its what I just did and it worked fine.

Download directly from the site on the app and it still says problem parsing the package. I don't have a rooted phone and its using stock firmware.

Ok try this since you can't find it on the market on the device.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.youtube
Also are you running 2.1 or 2.2?
I'm using 2.1 and I've checked for updates by going to settings-about phone-System updates. I can't get the newer 2.2 version as far as I know. I could always root the phone. I've googled on how to do it and it looks pretty straight forward.
For my firmware:
I have basebrand version: 32.36.00.28u_4.06.00.12_7
Kernel Version 2.6.29: gad36b87 [email protected]#1
Build Number: ERD79
Upgrade to the latest 2.2.2 stock or custom ROM. It'll bring you tons of benefits besides making Youtube work.
Do this:
1)Read the wiki in Jack_R1's signature.
2)Do a nandroid backup from recovery (amon_ra).
3)Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927935. Download the first file "Stock, with no modifications but root". Move it to your SDcard. (This is the latest stock ROM (FRG83G / 2.2.2) with root access. It is unmodified except allowing for root access.)
4)Flash it through recovery

Ok so I read the guide and it seems to be straight forward. Gonna read over it a couple more time tomorrow to make sure it's sinking in.
I'm stuck in the guild at stage 2.."Setup SDK"..The guide does no tell you that you need this special version of Java to open the program.. I have both SDK and the java setup on the computer. However where I'm stuck is simply getting windows to install usb drivers for the phone. I went to update drivers and told it to look in the folder SDK was installed and it refused by saying there was no drivers for the phone in there. When I set up the SDK program there is no option for "usb drivers" for me to even install..

the only thing im thinking is im typing the wrong commands? im following the steps given on the unlocker site. or maybe a wrong recovery file?
im so upset, but i will keep searching. is there a way to remove the apk file of clockwork from my evo and then install it on the hero?
When you unzipped the file did you do it on your pc or phone?? Also you should check to make sure that the .img is not in any folders. Just on your sd and not inside of your download folder or if you used root explorer to extract the
.img then it would place the .img in the extracted folder on your sd therefore you would have to move it from that folder to the sd. Also here is the rom manger apk if that will help

Its the free version not sure why it wouldn't show on the market for you.
Hopefully this helps.

wow thanks a lot guy. im flashing as i type. i will let you know what happens.
this is weird... i installed and flashed cwm recovery and it went fine. but it gave me an error about the license being out of date and need to reinstall the app. and wont let me dload any roms.
Well you don't wanna dl roms from it never do that. Always download roms via xda. Its basically meant to be used as an alternate way to flash a recovery. Also its way outdated. You can always flash the latest cwm. Now that you have a recovery loaded you should go s-off via darch that way you can flash via h-boot and its a great safety net. If you want the s-off.zip let me know.
Edit: Also are you on a stock but rooted rom???

success... i have done it. worked like a charm. i am now running cm7 on it. i wonder if im already s-off since i flashed cm7 and it worked without a problem?
xda rocks... posted the question around 6ish and got what i needed by midnight. the people here are very helpful. i know the hero is out-dated but i had it laying around thought id give it a whirl to give my evo a break and its working great. i have one more question, using the current cm7 rom and current cm7 kernel, can i overclock to the highest with no problem? or should i just stay safe?

Every phone is different. Try adjustment your Max one frequency at a time untill the phone reboots. When it does that's your safe max. Do the same for the min and you should be all good. Warning overclocking will drain your battery.

Hi,
I tried to upgrade my Dream to a version of And 2.2, after flashing my phone was boot looping, so re reflashed to rc29 using xda's return to stock guide. It boots fine now in normal mode, but now I can't get into recovery and I cant get anything to flash, not even rc29 again. If I try flashing using the phone I get Model ID incorrect, with fastboot I get remote: not allow. Very few threads mention HBOOT 1.33.0014, maybe its the problem? Any help would be appreciated

ok went searching for update in settings and noticed firmware is at 1.5 , I didn't think it could update automatically without a sim? so I'm guessing DREAIMG.nbh didn't take? Just messed my recovery? I installed Androot and it says I'm "already rooted, root again?" The first guide you pointed to THIS GUIDE says for "Tmobile G1 only", should I go ahead anyway? The last one LIKE SO , I would like to try the rogers_1.89.631.1.nbh but it seems to have disappeared from the net. I'll look into the gold card idea this weekend. Thx for your input :good:

I read your post to m3talmouth:
Find amonra recovery in xda, latest is 1.7 something
Put on root of sd card and name it recovery.img
Open a terminal and type
su
If you see a # procees
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
If you have an error it could be you need to add the flash image bianary or you have a bad download or named it wrong,
I figured It might work for me, now I have AmonRA recovery 1.7 :good:
So now following the guide you posted earlier http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Dream/Rooting_Branded_EBI1s, I should install the engineering SPL, then the EB1 port file, then flash cm 6.1.zip?
Hey good! Well if you have a custom recovery you are most of the way there, now remember you have a rogers dream and need tgo flash the proper radio and spl, make sure they are listed for your phone, check md5sums, flash radio first then spl then id recomend cm5 (faster) flash rom and gapps
Do this right, just the other day someone flashed either spl first or a curropt image and got a brick. Only warning so you don't but as long as you do what I said above you'll be safe

Well...I i did a nandroid backup, tried i now have the eng SPL installed, tried the CM 6.1 as it was easier to find for my phone + the port file, but it stuck at rogers boot screen. I've seen some posts for 2708 kernel but it never mentions this in any of the install guides. I have found CM 5 roms but only with the 2708 kernel and no mention of rogers, so I'm staying clear of those for the moment. Will search some more for CM 5, its not Android 2.2 though is it?
Cm5 is 2.1 but smoother than cm6 on these phones. You can flash the one in cm wiki just flash the right kernel on top of it. If you want to do the 2708+ update (I say a good idea) then just follow ezterrys instruction in his thread. Download radio and SPL, check md5sums, and then flash via fastboot. Now they can also be flashed in recovery but I don't recommend it. After that you can flash any of the newer ROMs and it won't mater that your phone was once rogers. But older ROMs (mostly eclair and older) will need a different kernel flashed on top of them

Success!!!!! I have CM 5.08 + 2708 installed and working, thx for everything, will try this mod for a while to see if it covers all I need, if so I'm good to go. :good:
Awesome! You may need to move to froyo if apps you need aren't avalible on 2.1, there are many good aosp and cm variants just straight cm6 is kinda poor on these phones, try a few out, make nandroids so you can change back easy, there are about a dozen 2.3 and 2.2 roms that I feel run great on the dream and I personally keep a back up of each for a quick change

Do not forget that your phone is no longer EBI1.
You will no longer need to flash EBI1 ports.
On a side note, looks like you somehow got the 1.33.0014 update.
1.33.0014 is a bootloader released by HTC somewhere last year for HTC Dream. They claimed it was unlockable, and you could flash with it. I did the unlock process, and I can promise you that HTC duped us. It's not unlockable. The unlock does absolutely nothing other than change the text at the top. I even had someone reverse some of the code, and they claimed the code for doing fastboot flash doesn't seem to be there.
yeah the .0014 official unlocked bootloader is a crock, when it first came out i was about to test it and someone else here tried first, turned into a nightmare for him so i tell all to stay away! some phones it actually isnt too bad if better ways like hacked bootloaders or radio s-off has been found for it, but its a pain and you usually need to flash a rom in recovery, extract the kernel from the .zip and then flash the kernel through fastboot.
so yeah any phone that you dont need this option, stay far away from it!
