[Q] My downloaded videos no longer play... - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been on CM6 stable since it was released and everything has been peachy.
A week or two ago, though, I fancied trying the korean radio and a new kernel (an intersectraven one) - the first time I've experimented with either. I usually just stay with whatever the ROM comes with.
Now I have discovered my downloaded videos no longer play. Well, they play for about half a second then I get the "Sorry, this video cannot be played" message. Videos taken with the camera play fine.
I thought it might have something to do with the radio or the kernel, so firstly I changed the kernel to the pershoot one that's available in ROM Manager. No success there, so next up was the radio. I downgraded back to 4.06 (not too bad since the korean one didn't offer a significant improvement on data speeds). Unfortunately the videos are still not playing
Will I have to reinstall CM6? If yes, will any of my settings revert to default? I know I would necessarily have to wipe, but I'm worried that even flashing CM6 on top of CM6 without a wipe, it'd wipe all my configurations.
Thanks to anyone who knows how to fix this slight issue.
p.s. whilst typing this out, I've found that Rockplayer still plays them, but I'd still like to get the stock player running them if possible.

Non ROM Specific Camera Issue

I've been scouring the forums in hopes of a fix for my problem (the G1 Q&A and the Android Development forums). In my searches I have found 10-20 people who have had this similar problem, specifically, a force close whenever I (we) attempt to use the camera.
I'm %90 positive this is a software issue. I have had this phone (my 3rd one) for a few months now, and never have I had any issues with the camera, i actually use the video cam fairly often. Anyways...I decided a while back to root and flash Cyanogen's latest ROM, with the latest radio (posted a few days ago) and the Death SPL. Once i completed this, I was met with an instant force close when attempting to use my camera.
I have actually wiped and installed Cyanogen's ROM 2x, (the 2 latest versions), I have also installed KingKlick latest ROM, neither of these, coupled with countless different configurations has solved the problem. I have attached a small snippet of the last log I pulled. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I also forgot to mention (and this might be completely wrong), I did restore the 1.5 image from the SPL, rebooted the phone, and the camera still didn't work, it didn't force close, just hung like it was trying to boot. I have also used the latest Super D ROM and I'm experiencing the same issue.
With my minimal knowledge, only one thing in the log jumped out at me, or, should I say I only saw one thing that I understood.
"X: /dev/msm_camera/control0 open failed: No such file or directory!"
Please help, this is a major deal for a number of people, every time it's posted, people just seem to ignore it.
Download Camera Magik from the market. If the problem is software related, then using a different camera app could be the solution. I like camera magik because is takes better pictures at low lights then the stock and the ability to zoom, but you can try any other app. Another suggestion is trying a sense based rom and using HTC camera. GL
I guess I should have said Kernel based as opposed to software based. I tried Camera Magic as well as one other new type of photo software, Camera Magic FC's, the other one opens, but, the camera never turns on.
Do you have any other apps that use camera(i.e barcode scanner, shopsavy)? You may have to uninstall and re-install. Did you wipe in-between roms? Try clearing your rotation settings from recovery, that may sort it out (I know it's a long shot). Other then that, email whoever's rom you're using directly with that log, they may be able to help you a lot faster then any of us regular folks can
Good luck
try a complete super duper wipe.
start from rc29, nonrooted. see if the camera works. if it does, start the root-rom process and check at certain intervals. if it doesnt work when your not rooted and on the stock original firmware, then its gotta be the phone. did it ever work before? i know you said this is your 3rd phone. has it ever worked on this particular phone?
First off, the camera/video has worked on all 3 of my phones, the 1st one had to be replaced because the keyboard went out, and, the 2nd one just kept randomly rebooting, the 3rd hasn't had any problems what so ever until my first root, which was Stock 2 Cyanogen.
So, I went back to RC29 unrooted and experienced a different problem. The camera didn't FC, but, it hung indefinitely at a black screen (kind of a dark grey). Unfortunately, for some reason the system option to force update to cupcake wasn't available, so, after 5hrs of waiting, I went back to root SuperD.

[Q] Jerky video after Froyo update

Has anyone else experienced this?
After the Froyo update on my S, video playback has become jerky at times, to the extent that the video stops but the sound continues. This never happened before....but it returns to normal after about 10-30 seconds.
I'm playing back xvid and divx avi files, approx 700mb.
Can anyone help please!? it's getting really frustrating!
Yeah I have also experienced it. But not in all videos. In mine it is just minute that is for about a 2 seconds and it becomes normal. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that I am better off with Eclair.
My videos are fine, but MP3 playback hiccups...also apps force close all the time, even mid-call at times...Eclair was better, 2.1.1 made it bad and 2.2 has made it worse
Galaxy S flashed through Odin...unrooted..don't know if I ought to risk rooting it..any suggestions?
I have the same issue..already did a post about it.
did u guys restore apps/system using backup?? as far as I know this could be the issue.
I will do a reflash from scratch this weekend and try videos on a fresh install.
I am convinced that this is one of the issue. I had flashed a custom rom froyo and I have also flashed through kies hack JPO. In both versions of froyo, I have the same issue. I have not restored any backup or anything.
yeah I just upgraded to asian jpd via odin was on stock optus rom. Hardreset etc. lagfix fixed via z4mod rooted. Experiencing the same jerky video playback with standard divx videos. Tried another data wipe but problem persists.

Did you find any solution to the problem.. me too stuck with the same issue..for me mkv's play good, without any issues..but if its avi back comes the jerkiness..
at least i'm not the only one....
I'm still having problems and I had to give up watching somethign on the way to work as it was so bad and kept saying "cannot play this file".
I started from scratch, done a factory reset after upgrading and it hasnt fixed the problem. Also I've tried to close down all programs before watching something and even clearing the RAM, but it makes no difference.
I'm getting really annoyed with it now! Does anyone have a solution? Anyone!!?

I guess it not just the galaxy hardware but other as well... maybe it froyo.
None of the players could help, but yxflash. The main problem with yxflash that together with smooth playing it produced significantly lower quality of video-rendering.
Anyway I've managed to solve the issue. The steps were:
full reinstall of official android 2.2,
hardware reset,
microSD card formatted,
the video converted with Movavi Video converter into Ipod preset or what ever your device needs. That's all.

[Q][i9000] Custom Firmware?

I have the 16GB Vodafone UK Galaxy S. Today I was in a city trying to use satnav and it was rank rotten. So I thought I'd see if an upgrade would do it. I was using the very first Froyo that Vodafone came out with - I upgraded to that and hadn't upgraded since. I did have it rooted and 1 click lag fix was on it.
I upgraded to Gingerbread just there, sadly I had to do a factory reset, however it's all working.
I have realised that if I am going to put a custom firmware on it then now is just the right time to do it.
Is there one out there that's stable, and an improvement over the Gingerbread I'm using? Particularly I'd like it to fix the lag (if that still needs fixed) and even better would be fixing GPS/Satnav.
Pinpong blockbuster rom - ticks all your boxes. Get faster fix from market.
Your gps will never be 100% satisfactory in the city, in fact it will probably always be poor - no matter what custom rom you use.

Have you think about CM7? Great Rom, works well on my phone, and add many new things.
Hi Mate, I tried many custom roms and finally settled for
(ROM)GingerCriskeloV77-9LS-CamHack- SIP + NoIncRing I9000/T/M JVP 2.3.4
Cheers
Well, I managed to get it on. Booting up is weird though, it looks for a long time as if the screen is broken, but eventually ti comes on to the Blockbuster lock screen and then everything is fine. It does seem faster - but I'll only really know when I get to one of those situations where I feel the phone is frustratingly slow.
Thanks very much Woolf!
Time allowing I'll give the other roms a shot, although this Blockbuster one does seem to be good enough for me.
Sadly my phone now reboots constantly. it seems to do it when the screen locks

Check you got the installation right for that rom, maybe you had to flash a jvp stock first or some similar omission?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Sorry to hear you're having issues. Try flashing to a totally stock JVQ first (with repartition) once you've backed up, then if you don't like that, try a custom ROM. I don't think many JVQ custom ROMs are worth trying if you want a taste of custom ROMs. Better to try CM7 or MIUI for something fast and different.
As a side note, the best tip I've seen for fixing the dreadful GPS we have with the i9000 is to buy a Nexus S or just ANY other phone! Yes, some radios appear better than others, but nobody can prove anything and it's almost all subjective feedback. A drop in the ocean of improvement needed for satisfactory function. If you must use it, a bluetooth GPS receiver and 3rd party navigation app seem the best way to deal with it.
I've now stepped away from Blockbuster. Even doing the a perfect install it crashed often and repeatedly. I did try upgrading to the very latest and that crashed several times in the past hour. Part of the problem was the rom starts with a lockscreen that has a messaging unlock on it, but it isn't set to an app that comes with the rom, so it reboots every time. Sadly that wasn't the only problem, as I was still getting loads of reboots.
So that's out of the way.
I'm now a lot more comfortable using Odin so I'll be able to try other options. I'll try the other two suggested in this thread first of all.
Next to test is CM7.
Thanks for the help folks!
CM7 aborted. Instructions are incorrect, the file they say to download doesn't actually match the instructions so that's out. Plus it clearly states it's not suitable for day to day use... so I don't thnk the time in working out how to fix it is justified since it looks like it wouldn't be useful.
I'm going back to the original question in the thread, to say that I'm looking for something stable. I now think that a custom rom is not the way to go. However some modifications may well be.
Can anyone suggest some kind of lagfix/speedup that isn't a complete overhaul like CM7, Blockbuster etc, that is very stable and that'll make my phone faster?
Edit : Part of what I was doing to install Blockbuster was install Speedmod kernel. So I've gone and put that on, and used the clockwork mod to root it, and also convert to ext4. I think things are looking pretty fast so far. I'm not sure if there's a lagfix for this, but I'm quite comfortable just now footering around - unlike the complete rom I don't feel out of my depth. So I think I'll be ok for now.

[Q] O2x performance degradation.

Got a sim free o2x and immediately upgraded it to gingerbread using LG's tool.
I have noticed that the performance degrades over time especially noticable with scrolling web pages and youtube.
From a clean boot, i fire up youtube and can watch big bug bunny in 1080p full screen and very smooth. When I come back to it a few days lastr, the same video stutters and the audio also skips. I can create this effect a lot quicker by playing something with the built in video player. After having played a video on SD card, i go back to youtube and its a stutter show again.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this using standard gingerbread on the O2x? I'v tried killing various apps and uninstalling others but nothing very scientific and the only way I can get back to normal performance if with a reboot. Any help gratefully appreciated!
Sounds to me like the ram is busy. Just try an app that cleans up the ram.
Stock kernel has bug in memory management. Solution is to flash for example Spica's kernel, latest r11-c is very very good.
Evidently that supposes to root - instal clockwork mod recovery first.

I have a problem with Spica's kernel , I think that it doesnt support netfilter (iptables) thus I cant use Droidwall, any solution?
Thanks
Instal iptables from market?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mgranja.iptables
Edit: the app says that iptables is already installed in kernel, not in the latest version but present. That's perhaps the problem. Only thing is to ask Spica to update to last version.
Ohhhh, i will check it later! thanks!!!
Have tried some RAM clean up apps, unfortunately it makes no difference. The amount of RAM free seemed to make no difference, i had it running smoothly with 82mb free and stuttering with over 100mb ram. If something like this was happening on my linux box I would assume something is hogging the cpu but the apps i have tried seem to indicate nothing is consuming a lot of cpu resources.
I don't want to consider reflashing with another ROM if I can avoid it. Is there anything else I could try?
Kernel problem. Read above.

Reboot your dam phone then.... pcs also get laggy when they have been on for a long time, so reboot and or flash a decent kernel.
Use stock kernel\rom from 20o
I have the same problem. After about 36 hours, the phone becomes laggy. It lags when waking up the screen, it lags in menus, etc so i have to reboot it every 36 hours or so.
Speaking of kernels and roms, i've tried them all by now. From CM7 (which i could not get along with, functionality wise) to Topogigi, spica, Thanatos, carburano, gueste and erestor.
I am now on gueste 2.1 stable SR1 and the problem persists.
After about 16 hours wake-up and the lockscreen lags, after about 24 hours scrolling becomes choppy, after 36 hours dialer, contacts and other apps start slowly and lag big time.
This is the same behaviour in all roms and kernels tried (except CM7 which is a no go for me).
L.E.:
Of course, rebooting solves the problem for the next 20 hours or so, but its quite inconvenient.

[Q] HTML5 or Flash video in stock browser - CM10.1/SCHIZOID

Is there any way to get HTML5 video playback working in the stock browser in any of the CM10.1 derived ROMs and SCHIZOID in particular?
I've never managed to get it working. I used to always get a grey area; if you clicked on it, it'd look like it was to start playing, but it just did as it the playback had finished and showed the replay options, etc.
Surprisingly, a couple of weeks ago I reinstalled SCHIZOID (I think it was the 11JUN build) after a complete wipe and I found out it was working. But after updating to the 01JUL build, it stopped working again. So I tried a clean install of this version. Nothing, still doesn't work. I've even again clean installs of 11JUN and even 07JUN and 02JUN (in case it was one of those the one) to no avail.
It can't be impossible as it was working for a few weeks before the update, but I don't seem to find what it depends on.
Video playback using Flash doesn't seem to work anymore either in these ROMs. There seems to be a problem with the overlays, and although the video is playing and you can hear it, all you can see is a black box.
Can anybody throw any light on this? Thanks.
Nothing? Could someone at least confirm that video playback doesn't work and it's not just me who can't get it working? Cheers!
I was having the same problem with flash, I could hear the video but couldn't see it. I found a work around by accident, I taped the full screen option on the player and in full screen flash video works. Hope that helps if you're still having the problem.
