[Q] Unable to partition/format SD card under Linux successfully - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a nice 16GB Class 10 SD card here for my Galaxy S, but I am unable to partition/format it correctly under Linux. I keep getting "sd card blank or has unsupported file system" when I insert it into my Galaxy S.
(I tried formatting it ext4, since that's supposed to be a pretty snappy/supported file system)
I am able to format it with the phone, but then I get vfat...
How can I get it formatted ext4 and recognized by the phone?
(Running Android 2.1)

Ext4 is not supported in stock kernel on your phone.

Which file systems are supported by stock 2.1?
And which by stock 2.2?

You can install oclf to get ext2 on any kernel and in the development forums there are plenty discussions on this topic.

External SD card

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry but the in the forum there is a huge amount of posts and I could not find the information that I need.
I just bought a 16GB SD card and I want to know what is the best way to format it and by what tools. I'd like to have 2 partition: ext2+fat.
I have a SGS JM3 Eclair, rooted, terminal emulator, busybox.
Thanks in advance for any kind of infos.

Are you going to use a lagfix or something on it? We have moved on from using SD partition lag fixes, but if you do then use a linux boot disc to fdisk it or use paragon disk partition app for windows. Also format the fat32 partition again via your phone as paragon has this odd bug where the phone cannot reconize fat32. Other then that just format it with the built in internal formater inside settings
Hi,
I don't want to use lag fix on sd but I'm trying to perform OCLF (already done but I've some sync issue with kies so I came back). What I want is the possibility to put apps on it that is because I need ext2 partition (I believe).
Regards.

[Q] Cannot mount SD in Nookie Froyo 2.2.1.

I have everything working except that when I format and mount an SD card (any), it will say the SD card is blank or has unsupported filesystem. I'm not running off an SD card. Just a flashed rom. Any ideas? Thank in advanced. I did search first for an answer but had no luck.

(1) you shouldn't format the card using the Froyo Android OS. It causes corruption or so I've heard. You should just format on your computer using FAT32.
(2) You need new VOLD files, I had the same problem, you can find my post of that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=945699

[Q] CM7/14 - Is an external SD-Card expected installed?

Hi,
[EDIT: Yes external SDcard is required for storage in CM7]
I successfully installed CM7/14 recently on internal flash, with Dalingrin's
1'st 3/8/11 OC kernel. It runs pretty well.
One issue I am unclear on and am having problems searching for the answer:
Is an external SDCard expected to be installed for storage?
Some of the applications I am trying to run, for example "ezPDF Reader", fail on
starting saying "Can't access SD Card" and "ROM manager" gives a similar
warning message.
So either:
1. I missed a step somehow in installation, related to remapping external
SDcard to internal memory (the /mnt/emmc partition I assume).
2. Some apps are just broken (perhaps related to compatibility mode?)
3. CM7 (Gingerbread) is assuming an external SDcard is always present?
Thanks in Advance,
Peter
yes after having installed CM7 with the bootable sdcard you will in fact need/want a sdcard in the device while running CM7 so you have storage. That said I would NOT use the sdcard you have setup for installing/flashing ROMs. Otherwise it turns into a pain in the neck if something goes wrong and you need to reflash for some reason.
speaking for myself as I like to play around and flash different stuff all the time I have 4 different sdcards for use in my Nook. One 16Gb setup to boot and run Honeycomb right from the sdcard. I have another for storage ( 32Gb) when I'm running a ROM that is installed on the eMMC. The other 2 cards are bootable sdcards for installing and backing up. One is setup for ext4 like what is used on CM7, the other I have is also bootable but has CWR 3.0.0.5 for ROMS that DO NOT use ext4 and only use ex2/ext3.

[Q] How do I get all partitions of my sd card to show?

First and foremost, I apologize if this question has been asked/answered before. I am very new to both windows and android, and most likely this is just a stupid issue caused by my inexperience
I have the Custom Nookie Froyo ROM 0.6.8 written to my 2GB micro sd card and it works great in my nook and all. However, when I put the sd card in my computer, it only shows one partition (boot, 115mb) in the devices with removable storage section of my computer. There are supposed to be 4 partitions on the disk, and I was curious as to how I can find and access the other 3.
Windows can't see ext partitions, so try running a Linux live CD...

It works! Thank you very much
Download apk nookcolorums, it will allow you to mount any partition.
Even better
Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility is great the app comes with the Rom "Customized Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 Image for SDcard" just make sure you go into the "Spare Parts" app and ensure that Compatibility mode is turned off, would not work for me until I did that.

SD Card Booster

Anyone try either the one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
or one on the market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sdincrease.it
If you've tried it, did you find there was significant increase in speeds?
You dun need an sd card booster since our nexus s is EXT4 storage
This also applies to Nexus S, but roms as CM7 or MIUI have already integrated my script.
I'm not running CM7 nightlies, but rather the RC1. Is it included in that? Thanks for the info
the default file system is vfat for nexus s. and nexus s does not have traditional sd card storage.technically it's not even an sd card it's an internal nand storage.
I've gotten improved speeds with xfs. but the fastest fs should be ext2 (which i haven't tried out yet)
i don't know if cm7 has ext4 or not for sdcard .i doubt if most mods do since using a linux file system would mean the user of the phone has no way to put files on that sd card using a windows computer(at very best it's possible to view them safely). and i think that's the only reason the default is fat.
