hi all im new here i got a samsung galaxy s bought here in ireland. was thinking of rooting the phone is there any safest way on rooting the phone.? since its still on warranty. and does rooting the phone break your warranty?
Firmware is froyo 2.2
base ver is XXJPP
kernel is 2.6.32.9
thanks for the help everyone
I used z4root, takes bout yen minutes but its easy to do + you don't need a computer.

do i need to unmount the sd cards? before using z4root
Super one click. Install from your pc. Rooting does void warranty but you may be able to flash back to stock or un-root if you ever need to send it back. Unless you brick it but that way they prabably wouldn't know either.

ive never rooted my phone before and this gps aids program does not seem to work without it rooted. so i tried that z4root program.. i am trying a temp root just to be careful and for some reason everything is running super slow, hanging, phone is making short vibrates, etc.
is the galaxy s not compatible with the temp root method? im scared that something similar will happen if i do the full root and screw up my phone.
edit: now its completely frozen with a black screen. im very scared to try a full root with this program.
I use CF-Root from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
So far it's great. Phone works very well, no force closes, no reboots, nothing. Every time a program needs super user privileges, a pop-up screen appears.
For the GPS, I used fasterfix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Worked for me. Also for 2.2.1 JPX/JPY (used v1.5.5 in this case, now there is v1.7).
No you don't need to unmount the cards, it should work fine

Hello. You all are great. I have read the faq and other threads but have not seen my questions clearly answered. Forgive me, but I am a noob and nervous. I have some general questions. I want to root but not flash a new rom. There are several programs I want that require rooting, e.g. keep lights on, non-market apps, tethering. How great is the risk to have just a rooted phone, no new rom, and continue normal daily use? Superone click has rooting and unrooting. Does unrooting to install any AT&T updates cause problems. I envision rooting, loading a couple of programs and leaving it alone. If I root must it remain rooted after installing the programs for them to operate. Or, can I root, install programs, and then unroot? Again, thanks for all your help.
Rooting is non-destructive. If a program requires root to install, it likely requires it to run as it will need to access superuser permissions. If you remove root those programs will no longer run. Rooting is probably the most basic mod you can do to your phone. I've heard of it failing, but I've not seen anyone damage or brick their phone with it. Do it and forget it. It should have no effect on any future updates as they will probably come via Kies Mini and not OTA, but I doubt we'll see any more. You should update to stock Froyo 2.2 before you root.

I used the all in one. You can find it in the development forum.

Thank you. I looked at the all in one option and I have to say it appears daunting and a bit intimidating. Is it necessary simply for rooting? It seems to be aimed at those wishing to replace the roms. I have read rather a bunch on all of these methods. I am leaning towards z4root or superoneclick. Any opinions/advice regarding these or others is appreciated. I read somewhere that for superoneclick for the ATT captivate one needs to chnge to rage against the cage from psneuter. Is that correct?
The change to rage is only if you are already on stock Froyo. Super 1-click works fine for Eclair.
Super one click..as easy as it sounds

Super 1 click works fine for Froyo as well. I used it when I test drove official 2.2. It was a earlier version though (1.51). Not sure if that made a difference.
Good Morning/Afternoon Everyone viewing.
I have the Motorola Atrix (ATT) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab (Sprint), Both had root at one point, but thanks to Firmware updates, neither are rooted.
I originally rooted my Tablet with z4root, which worked as expected and perfectly. Once I updated to sprints latest (Firmware 2.2.1, Kernel 2.6.32.9, Build Number SPH-P100.EB28) I lost root. So, z4root worked originally, I tried it again, and now, it runs, it flashes that it is acquiring root shell, installs the Superuser App then the App (z4root v1.3.0.) ends and brings back to the home screen. No Reboot, nothing else. I fire up a Terminal and it's normal, $, not root, #. I've tried running z4root a few times, using perm and even temp root options, have performed a factory reset, and nothing has worked. So, with all this hassle thus far, I'm reaching out. I've searched a bit and started getting pretty confused on what does and does not work, so is there anyone out there who can point me to the correct thread or at least toss out a Method that Does in fact work for my version, I would be extremely Jazzed, Happy, Appreciative, Might get a Cat and name it after you (And I am allergic to those beasts.).
As for the Atrix, I am more pressed to root the tab as I would like to start playing with Custom ROMs on it (Cyanogen 7 looks like fun.). But Wanting root back on the Atrix would be nice so I can switch from using PdaNet to using Barnacle again. Same experience with z4root, it originally worked, now, no go. Atrix info is Firmware at 2.2.1, System Version: 4.1.57.MB860.ATT.en.US, Kernel: 2.6.32.9-00005-gde8e6dc, and Build number: OLYFR_U4_1.5.7.
Any help provided, again, would be greatly Appreciated.
Double posted for some reason.
z4root doesn't work on newer firmwares. Try looking superoneclick with temproot. Or you could use oldin to revert to the original firmware and use Z4 to root then install custom rom that is 2.2.1 base then updated latest firmware as the developer updates it.
Google your devices and got these results.

Thank you Jerry, I ran across a thread earlier on taking the tab back to eb24 from 28, so I will do so tonight. The Atrix ill conquer next. =)

Hello Everyone,
I just bought a GT-I9000 as I literally read many good things about it but I was in for a surprise.
I would firstly like to endorse that the video shown while registration was absolutely right. Now straight to the point, this device doesn't have market icon, perhaps due to the region. After reading and searching for hours I found out the rooting and upgrading to Gingerbread would solve my problem.
What mobile has:
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware version: 2.1-updated1
Base-band version: I9000JXJG2
Kernel version: 2.6.29 mobilus at the rate of SE-S606 # 2 (Doesn't let me post with the sign of at the rate)
Build number: ECLAIR.JPJG8
What I did:
1. Tried Kies to update as can be seen from Firmware, but nothing happened any further. Kies still shows that some version couldn't be installed successfully yet when I try to update it says I am using latest version.
2. Downloaded odin, gingerbread, CF-Root and when tried to start phone in download mode I noticed that it wasn't working either.
What I need:
That is only one thing, I need a market icon in my set so I could installed "Astro File Manager" to install all the apps and ".apk" files. Other than that its just a dog without teeth.
I don't care about latest or not, beautiful or not, fancy screen lockers etc as long as I can play vids, take pics, check emails and play games so it really doesn't matter whether I have Gingerbread, Froyo or Eclair, all I need is an icon...
Looking forward for your response.
Regards
PS: As i said I am a noob then I literally mean it, I was about to install CF root, and gingerbread by watching the videos and reading guidelines without having a know how of what is flash, what is CF root or root, what is CWM, kernel. In short I don't know anything.
I don't know about the policy of waiting patiently for the answer which could possibly ship one out of a problem but I am really looking forward to the xda crew to have a say in the issue I have been facing from a week.
Another thing which I forgot to mention is that 3 button download mode doesn't work either so what option I am left with given the circumstances.
Regards
Alright, I found market versions 1.1.2 and version 3.5.
Tried to install but it says problem parsing the package.
Which particular version am I supposed to look for? Secondly I found a market switcher, it got installed though gave an error "Root permission needed".
Downloaded z4root and tried to root temporarily. It kept on running for more than 20 minutes, hitting back simply brought me back to the menu but cell got hang. Rebooting which solved it but market which was installed is still behaving in the same manner.
Please anyone tell me some solution so I may not to roam from thread after thread.
Is it only me waiting from last three days to get even a single reply or its the routine here?
Calm down dude !

I apologize that no one, especially the previous poster, has offered to help.
If you don't have the 3-button download mode working, I have seen threads regarding getting that working, so I would search for that.
I have no absolutely why you can't install the Market. Where are you from? I suppose some places don't have access.
As for rooting your device, there are a few good options of doing so. If you would, please try as many as it takes until one works.
I understand your concern, and there is a lot to learn about the wonderful world of Android. Please do not be discouraged; you will be up and running in no time.
I wish I could help you more, but I'm certain a little effort, positive thought, and surely some (hopefully soon to come) brilliant advice will have your SGS working beautifully in no time.

Thank you so much for encouraging.
I have rooted my device using z4root but it wasn't much of help. Tried the 3-button fix but it didn't work either.
Tried registry patch for kies, it started showing that there is a firmware upgrade, but after uploading firmware the kies showed that, "This device's firmware can't be upgraded".
And if I use any previous version of kies with registry patch, it says first upgrade kies and then your firmware.
So I am again on step one. Is there any way to upgrade to froyo?
My set is from KSA, I am currently In Pakistan. As for the details, of broadband and version you may check the first post.
Anyone around please?
UPDATE: 27/11/11
I have started a thread in the development section that contains all this information, please leave any findings or questions there, I believe members will find it more helpful there.
The thread can be found here
I have removed the file links from the OP to stop any confusion in the future. All files can be found in the other thread where it will be maintained and updated (if necessary) in the future.
Thanks for reading.
UPDATE: 27/11/11
Andrew_Low has provided a copy of his stock FROYO backup, which I tested on my tab and confirm that it is working. The kernel is rooted, other than that it is a clean ROGERS rom.
He was also able to capture the GINGERBREAD update, (which I have not tested as of yet, any testers please post your results) this is the stock update available from KIES.
Many thanks to him for this, if it helps you, hit his thank you button[/URL]. If you find this thread helpful as well, hit my thank you button.
Instructions on flashing are not provided. If you need these files it means you know how to flash your device, have flashed a custom ROM previously, and require this to return to a stock state.

Not an easy ROM to find is it?
Anybody ?
Any fresh ROGERS tabs out there???
I just picked up a used Galaxy Tab that has this firmware on it. I'm not new to hacking Android devices, but the Tab is new to me.
I haven't installed Kies yet, but will in a couple of days and can make a backup.
That would be just great, thank you very much, and I assure you that you will be glad that you made a backup for yourself as well in the future (hopefully not though, I don't expect you to have problems or anything like that but you know what I mean).
If possible, can you make the backup before you root the device, otherwise it seems to be a bit of a headache trying to get it un-rooted after the fact.
Many thanks.
EDIT: I guess i'm thinking more of a temp root than a perm root before backup
Sigh, I'm in noobville here with Kies.
Cross booted to Windows XP (I normally use Linux as my desktop) - installed Kies and sorted out USB connectivity.
I don't see where in Kies I can do a firmware backup. The backup just grabs the user data from the device.
It detects my firmware version and offers me the chance to update (which I assume would be a bad idea). Quickly looking on the net, you can 'capture' the firmware files during an update - but that doesn't help grab the version I'm running. Seems there may be a registry hack that lets you install older versions in Kies? If that's true, why can't anyone with a Rogers tab just get the old firmware easily?
Looking for a bit of hand holding.
Oh yeah, and device is bone stock. I'll likely root, unlock and install CyanogenMod - but I'm in no rush. Happy to try to help capture the stock ROM. It may help me out in the future, you never know.
Search for Roto-backup, it is a way to back it up bit by bit. It's a thread by Rotohammer, using his technique members were able to provide UN-ROOTED firmware, which are posted in the dev section. Have a little read see what you think.
The Roto-backup link was helpful, but that requires rooting.
Here's what I've done. Starting with a bone stock, factory reset device. I rooted the device using SuperOneClick 2.2. Sadly I had to run this under Windows to get it to work, mono + Ubuntu didn't seem to work out
I used the default "auto" method of rooting with SuperOneClick, and I did install busybox. In theory - if you really wanted to have an un-rooted stock, you could use the Unroot option of SuperOneClick.
Then I used the roto-backup script. This seems to have worked and I've got a 250MB zip file that I believe contains the stock firmware.
Are you brave enough to test it?
Files were zipped into a single file then split into chunks using RAR to get around upload limits. Grab them from skydrive.
Nice. I have a backup I came across but it's screwy and can't be un-rooted. The root method you used was temporary or perm?, the difference would be one disappears after a reboot.
When I originaly did my backup I used a temp root and came up with a file that I'm pretty sure was about the same size.
Brave you ask? I'm downloading the 3 RARs right now and will check it out.
Many thanks, will flash and tell you how it goes.
Well, Andrew_Low, it worked like a charm. The flash went smooth I will attempt to un-root shortly, and tell you how it went.
Glad it worked. Let me know if unroot via SuperOnClick 2.2 goes ok.
Why do you want non root? Warranty claim?
Slightly off topic, what ROM would you recommend? Seems any AT&T compatible ROM should play ok on the Rogers tab. I'm partial to CM being that's what is on my phone.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It is for warranty reasons, I have two tabs one was acting up. I did re stock it and sent it back but I wasn't able to un-root so I'll see if it goes through with samsung.
I HAD my stock rom that I somehow deleted (or just misplaced, cause I can't find it anywhere) Then I figured that I am not the only one who may need this, and since it is harder to find, I thought that I would try and help out the P1000R folks by getting a stock rogers rom for those who would like to revert. I was going to wait until I receive my tab back and see what they did to it and maybe have a fresh rogers rom on it to backup. I plan on posting it for members to have.
Our Rogers tabs are great for flashing anything on it really (p1000 related of course). Currently I have BOCA on mine, I had HC RC1 on it previously for a good little bit, and was going to put the ICS alpha build on it, but now since I'm left with one I use it for business purposes and require full functionality out of it. The tab that I sent back had OVERCOME KRATOS on it. Funny enough, this tab is the one that i'm always flashing different roms on and overclocking and plain old abusing it yet it was the other one that crapped out.
I recommend the OVERCOME rom as it is very stable, fast and reliable with almost no bugs. Combined with the bell modem it could also be used for phone calls if necessary. But experiment with any one you want until you find one that suits your needs, I found both my tabs hard to brick so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. I can't wait for an ICS beta rom to stick on this one.
Cool. I'm interested in a clean stock ROM if one shows up, please post to this thread. I'll try the unroot and see if that works for me.
Open to pointers on how to soft root and capture ROM. Seems feasible, but I didn't find a way to soft root and give me enough to roto backup.

Looking for a clean stock ROM for Rogers as well for warranty work, thanks!
Can't folk use the 2.3 firmware from kies? I haven't tried, but if you flash the rooted UXJJ6 from this thread then use Kies to upgrade to 2.3 you'd be in an unrooted stock state.

Hmm, very interesting. I ran the unroot on my device and it did manage to remove the superuser apk, but beyond that the device appears to still be rooted - busybox is still installed, and when I shell in over adb I get the # indicating root access.
I suspect just removing the superuser app is enough to make it appear 'as stock' - but any expert digging into the device and it's easy to see things are not stock.
If I were to try again - seems zergRush may be the local root you want to use, then from there figure out how to backup the ROM.
[edit] Ooh... reboot and adb has lost the # - I still see busybox installed in /system/xbin/busybox - I suspect this is pretty close to 'stock' if I punt the /system/xbin stuff entirely.
I'm not sure I'm that motivated to chase this further - I can't guarantee it is 100% stock, and it's the same as dl'ing the files I previously uploaded and running SuperOneClick 2.2 unroot + removing the busybox stuff as I specified above. The only mystery here is really what causes adb to have root privs when rooted.
Sweet - appears I was able to grab the ROM from Kies during the 2.3 upgrade - so I've got a copy of the clean/stock Rogers GINGERBREAD.UXKG1 firmware.
Will upload and link here in the next couple of days.
Very sweet, I will post it in the OP for reference.
