i wanted a navigaton app which doesnt wifi or internet, something like co-pilot, i was looking for something that is really good, price is not a problem
Co-pilot
Co-pilot is now out for android:
Should be in the market now.

CoPilot will show the speed you are going. You have to touch the bottom near the distance and a menu of choices will pop up choose Speed and Distance and there you go....
So these apps work with a data plan or something? Isn't that what he was asking?

The question was that doesnt require wifi or data plan...and co-pilot would be my recommendation.

I think he wanted a GPS progrma that doesnt use data or internet, Copilot is a good choice and their recent v8 supports froyo.
Ya know, for $4.99, you're actually getting a lot for your money if you get Copilot.

^ I used navigation on my iphone. Didn't know it was available for android. It was a good app from what I remember.
Copilot needs work, if you can get a good install then good but I had serious issues. I actually needed to reflash. I wouldn't recommend it.
The maps are huge and take too long to download. But the problem was that when I turned the screen off it killed the download. I don't have any auto task killer or aggressive minfree settings so that shouldn't have happened. Once the download failed then the app would force close. I cleared data and installed them re installed. Then it broke my gps, so I cleared data and uninstalled again but gps was still broke, a factory reset fixed it but I used clockwork recovery for that and it wiped my cellular data settings so I had no 3g. It was a big mess over a crappy app.
I'm trying navdroyd now. It already seems way better.

I have absolutely no idea what you're experiencing. Ofcourse the maps are huge, more than 1GB, as the whole point of a GPS app is to have all the maps on your SD card. Took me minutes to d'load the maps from ALK's website.
Been using CoPilot since my Windows Mobile days and its great (i miss TomTom though). Installs like any other app and has a nice big "exit" button when you're done with it.
Excellent app.

It looks like a great app if it works and It appears to have potential on android but I'm not the only one who had problems. Read there comments in the market. I used the app to download the maps over wifi and when the screen went off it stopped the transfer. At that point the app would force close. After starting from scratch I got it installed by putting the phone on charge and setting it to never sleep with usb plugged in. but even with a fresh install otherwise working it caused an error with the gps. I have a similar problem with certain lbs test mode settings where the gps turns off on its own with a navigation app still running. Not every captivate experiences this but at least one other member had the same problem but his happened all the time and want related to any app or setting. Some apps don't agree with my gps some do. My tracks tracks me perfectly, but co pilot works for a minute and the gps turns off, and the error shows up in maps as well but only after installing co pilot. It doesn't affect my tracks. Doing a factory reset fixed it. I tried it again same results. Then I read the comments and others are saying it crashed there phones. It seems pc download is the way to go, some are reporting that fixed there problems. Also some are reporting problems with 3rd party keyboards causeing install problems. So maybe set to stock android if you have it (i do) instead of swype.
Btw my gps performance is quite accurate and had been since stock jf6. I get faster locks with jf7 and now with leaked ji6 froyo it is as good as any other device I have used. My gps problem seems to be atypical. I never had the complaints of poor accuracy or inability to get a lock but there is some issue that I do have that only few others are experiencing. It isn't intermittent, but only shows after running certain apps, and/or settings.
I hope the op doesn't have problems with copilot but I tried it too many times and had big problems. I think I can get it to work but decided if it doesn't then I don't want to go through the trouble to fix it yet again. Navdroyd on the other hand works flawlessly for me but looks a bit dated and the address search is not that good.

Im getting some rather odd performance from the GPS..
I just got this thing out of the box, and know next to nothing about it.. so forgive me if this is a known issue or an easy fix..
I decided to mess with it a bit and went to "maps" and then "location" it puts me nowhere even near where I am..
so I tried "direction" and did "from my current location" to my office (4 miles away)
it cam up with sound direction, but when I started moving, it had my dot jumping all over the place. Showing me on one side of town, then 30 sec later 5 miles away..
I download an app that shows GPS status, and it shows good signal (7 satellites)
So, why is it behaving so wierd?
also, what are some other GOOD free navigation apps? I see many listed in the market, but I dont want to download them all, anyone have an opinion?
Do you have the GPS enabled in your settings?
G1 uses 2 ways to pin point your location:
1. Wireless networks (which I find never to be accurate)
2. Gps
Go to your Settings>> Security & Location
Try disabling your wireless and ONLY use GPS
Sorry but no good FREE Nav on the market yet, AndNav is still on the works for US

don't know how good it is but Nav4All i think it's called....i downloaded it this morning and i think it's a talkin nav cause you have to download the voice language you want to use. i haven't tried it yet but might be a good option
I saw TeleNav nominated as the best GPS navigation app by the Android Network. (this is their blog page where it is posted: http://blog.telenav.com/blog/2009/0...ne-vote-for-us-in-the-android-network-awards/). Should I get this service or is some other service like Google Maps available? Thanks for the help.

The ONLY good nav program is copilot. All the others offload navigation to the provider's servers so require network connection and use up your data allocation - i.e. cost $$ to use.
If your location is jumping around by miles, then you are using cell tower location. It sets your position to the same position as the tower itself. GPS lock can sometimes take a long time. If the gps icon in the status bar is BLINKING or OFF, then you are definitely NOT getting a GPS position.

A Quick Note About Sherpa
With Cyanogen already including Sherpa in his latest experimental build, there have been a few issues that have arisen. I feel that, because of these issues, any devs who are considering adding Sherpa to their builds should make users aware of these issues. If you are such a dev, feel free to add the following list to your first post. Also, you should make it clear that this version of Sherpa is pre-release.
If you wish to add Sherpa to your builds, you can download the .apk here: http://gynecologistcobra.net/apps/Sherpa.apk
Major Issues
Do not open the keyboard while Sherpa is running. It may cause it to crash.
Sherpa does not work properly on non-US devices. In the worst cases, it will fail to connect to the server. Even if it does connect, it may not be able to discover your surroundings.
Sherpa may fail to launch completely.
Sherpa requires GPS to be active to auto-locate you.
Sherpa may turn on your Wi-Fi while it is running.
Minor issues
Auto-rotate does not work in Sherpa.
It also sometimes just won't start, freezing up while trying to acquire the GPU. Awesome app though

Well, it was designed for the Magic, which has more RAM, ergo it can freeze on start up.

Actually, now that you mention it, I have seen the 'Open Wi-Fi Networks' notification flash up while I was running Sherpa. While my WiFi was turned off.
I think this is definitely a pre-release. If you watch logcat, there are hundreds of exceptions being thrown.

We know it's a prerelease version. However, people may want to start putting it in their builds, like Cyan has done, so there should be a bugs list.

That is weird, it does take a few seconds to show, maybe it takes longer on Hero since it is a slower ROM.
After playing around with this app.. I must say its definitely one of the best "places" type app out there. I have noticed a couple things that havent been mentioned. First off, i havent had any fc even after opening the keyboard. The app screen doesnt rotate but is still functional for me in landscape.
I assume this app you can set your location manually via zipcode, city, etc. I would imagine that this also picks up via GPS.
On the bottom where it tells me my location, it is set for my home. GPS isnt picking me up elsewhere, as i am not at home. When i search by zip it works fine.
I also tried to go to google maps and lock on gps there.. but no go so far.
Like i said, i know there will be some small bugs considering this app isnt meant for the g1 Anyone else experience the GPS not locking your current location?
My GPS is off. On google maps I get the correct location but in Sherpa it thinks I'm at home, not at work.

Yeah.. I hear you. If i have my gps enabled and go the the Menu in Sherpa, select Go to Location. There is a "Use Current location" Then the little circle to the left of you displayed location with "think" for a couple seconds and stay at the same location... I dont even know how it picked up that location.
If my gps in not enabled then the circle with "think" for as long as you let it.
Hi,
A month or two ago I downloaded a promising app off the market (sorry, can't remember the name). It used google maps and provided turn by turn directions with voice cues. After wiping I can't find the app - does anyone remember what it was called? It seemed a little slow / too big for the Dream, but was much better than the other free mapping apps on the market now. I've googled and searched the forums a few times w/o coming up with anything. Thanks.
PS if this post is out of line since the app likely violated Google Map's API licensing, sorry, it was free and I don't see the harm.
bump...
also interested in this app
I think the app you are talking about is 1-click-direction
Hmm... it looks close, but I don't think that's it. I could have sworn it had turn by turn directions, and the interface here doesn't look familiar. It's been a few of months so I suppose I could be forgetting, but really I thought I'd tested the turn by turn. No one else remembers seeing this? This probably would have been in end of May, or maybe early June.
It might be gNaviHelper, but I can't be sure - apparently I've used it before and my free trial is up. Is it worth $9?
I don't think there is any turn by turn navigation on the market yet. ANDNav2 would be the only app that has turn by turn but thats not fully functional yet in the US. There is telenav that has turn by turn, but its not available on the market you have to go to there website to download it. I use to have it and its pretty nice but after a couple months I thought it was a waste cause my JVC unit has built in navigation. If I'm wrong on anything feel free to blast me.

I'm with you on that one. Additionally it's only a 1 time +/- $35.00 charge. No monthly like Telenav.
Yeah co-pilot is the way to go.
I wonder if AndNav or something similar could be ported from navit, navit builds a data file from OSM data, but it halves the size of the OSM file and does turn by turn etc.
from what i can tell, co-pilot wants to take all of the california maps, even all the maps if i wanted them (1+gb) and put them on my phone?? it says not enough memeory but how do i get tit to save all that info on the sdcard??? did it tell me not enough space cuz the sdcard didnt have 1+gb?? cuz i just i didnt have room on my sdcard either. CoPilot needs about 2GB free initially to unpack the map data. After it is unpacked, it only takes up about 1.1GB of space.
depends on the map.....
Europe takes 1.9GB
the app is well worth it!

what i have installed for turn by turn is nav4all on the market its FREE too. you also have an option for a nice female voice. tho the UI is actually pretty ugly and u may have to get used to it. but it well worth it for being free.
If you live in the city, it really doesn't matter which option you pick, as long as you like it.
Unfortunately, if you're in (or going to be in) an area with very little GSM coverage, co-pilot would *seem* like the best option since it doesn't need a cell signal to operate.
The problem I've had is that co-pilot loves to forget that it has been registered. Unfortunately, it won't tell you this until you're trying to shave an hour off your road trip by hopping off the interstate and going through the woods...and don't have a phone signal.
Andnav2 works pretty well in the US. It is much better than the other options, and does not require a data connection for navigation.
Nav4all
it called nav4all
Are there any apps that load full maps onto my gtab so I don't need to have a data connection to use my bt gps for navigation? As it is now, I believe Google navigation requires either wifi or tethering to work...
Co-pilot in market.
or you can find a version of motonav (basically igo 8.x) and maps from mobilism.org -- best 3d nav software out there that only requires gps, no data. map sets are ~1-2gb and you can get every single state and pretty much any country in the world now (teleatlas/navteq, mixed or whatever).
sort of tough for newbies to get really into customization, but i was huge into this on my past 2 mio devices, so if you need a hand drop me a line on here, no prob.
Thanks. I just dl'd co-pilot, but it says my trial is over, even though I entered my market order id.
I'll try motonav on my other machine and compare.

I went round and round with Co-Pilot about that. I had it on my phone and had de-activated it but it would not activate on my G tablet. They sent me a link to download directly from them. It worked with my registration info after that.
How hard would it be to get Google navigation setup with an external GPS unit? I'll probably be picking up a GTablet soon, and am wondering how hard it would be to setup it as a navigator. Could it be done (if so, how easily) by hooking it up with a GPS unit? (Yea, it already does what I want the tablet to do, but its 3+ years old and slooooow to run haha). That or I could use the GPS on my phone once I get it running (HTC Vogue).

It is not hard to make GPS work with an external unit. Using Google Navigation though requires an internet connection since Google does not store the maps on your device. So you can use an external GPS receiver, and tether your phone for data. Or, there are ways to use the GPS in your phone and tether too. I have not tried it but hear it can be done.
BTW, I still have an ancient HTC Vogue that I run Android on too...

I would prefer to use Google nav because it works really well. The Vogue does not have wifi though and I have not found a way to tether it using bluetooth. So I use a program called Co-Pilot. It is only $4.99 in the market for the US version but it can be a pain to get activated on the G tablet. ALK who makes the program sent me a link to a non market version that did install with my registration info. It works ok, but not as well as Google nav. Seems to be missing plenty of addresses that are not new and should be there. They do have a way to let them know what is missing but I don't know how often they update.

Finally got through to someone in tech support (emails went unanswered) but their advice (basically wipe program and start again while downloading the maps separately onto my PC and then into the g-tablet) still resulted in errors. Since the holiday is coming up, this will probably not get solved in time for next weeks vacation/test run.
Oh well. For five bucks I wasn't expecting a lot and my MIO unit is still operational. Just hoping for some text to speech voice turns from my g-tablet. I will poke again after the holidays. Seems like a combination of the date not resetting or hard coded in the downloaded apk or authentification not getting out (since it is a wifi only machine; the program is expecting the telephone).
Unless anyone has any other suggestions?
success install after rom uprade
I installed latest ROM upgrade (3.1.1) and was able to get co-pilot installed and working. Combination of wiping user data and alk receiving gapps sales information.
No luck with John or Lisa. Anyone with hints for getting the voice portion working.
I have used 1Weather for a long time without any issues. Lately I have noticed that the radar takes 15 -25 seconds to load, even though the map and present location load immediatley. I have noticed this on my Nexus 6, my Nexus 5x, Samsung 10.1 G5210, and Samsung SGS III --- all running different android versions.
Have contacted 1weather but they say they do not experience this.
So - can some of you install 1weather, and tap the map icon at the bottom to see how fast/slow your radar loads? I am in OKC area if you think that weather data feeds for this area might have something to do with it.
Or any other ideas - wifi speeds are excellent otherwise
SOLVED - Thanks to all who posted and made suggestions. It turned out to be the wifi router (ASUS). I went down to the AT&T store and tried their wifi - 1Weather loaded fast and so did radar. Bought another router (Netgear) and 1Weather worked properly. Some setting on the ASUS router (on or off I don't know) was the culprit - but I think it had something to do with parental control, because I initially had same problem on Netgear. Then I turned on parental control but did set it to block nothing and that did the trick. Have no idea why, but it's working now. May re-hook up the ASUS to see if there's a similar setting to turn on/off

I'm in the Dallas area and mine loads quickly. I also have some locations in New England and they load fast too.
At least you got a reply from them. I emailed them a question a week or two ago and they never answered.
I have the app and my Radar seems to load very fast.
I am in the DC-VA-MD area.
So I hate to say, but the problem might actually be with the area where you live.
Mine loads fine as well on Android Marshmallow and Android Nougat. You may consider clearing cache or at the very worst data and resetting up the app if problems persist.

I have actually done that and also rolled back to a previous version...with no success.
I did change my router to a dual band router, but am pretty clueless as to 95% of the settings.
So since you mention the router, are you saying on mobile data it loads fine?

No I have checked that as well. But interesting is that it loads the "still" radar first on mobile, not the animated one. It loads the animated one on wifi 1st.
Well it sounds like your wifi is working fine regardless if data is coming through and its just this app and the fact that its happening on mobile data too confirms its not the router settings. All I can think of is check permissions under the app settings, make sure its got the location access
(im sure it does) as well as storage permissions. Other than that if I cant replicate it then all someone can really suggest is uninstall/reinstall. The storage permission is to cache map data for radar which should be what makes it load faster.

Thanks for the comments. I'm gonna try it at the local AT&T store on 1 of their phones, if they'll allow it.
I wonder if it has something to do with the data source of the radar in my area? Oh well, will keep searching
If thats the case try setting it manually to a diff location. You could try 33411 for example which is in florida.
Just a suggestion...if nothing else works...you might want to try another app such as
Radar Now

I use 1weather and it loads radar very fast on wifi and even faster on LTE. Gotta be a conflict with something else on your device.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
