Hi my phone has recently had the froyo build from keis using the reg hack and it's definately worse than before. I want to do the following but just want to check its a good idea/ best way.
I want to do a factory reset (to clear out any 2.1 garbage hanging around)
root the phone
install a lag fix
possibly install another fw
I have backed up the apps I car about with astro I was then going to do a factory reset
Then root the phone with SuperOneClick
Then install CFLagFix
Then hopefully my phone would stop behaving badly.
Also a bit worried about the fact I used the keis hack should I have waited for the uk release? How will I be able to install the uk froyo build when it is released?
Is there a fw with all this stuff pre done which would work better?
(another question is there any fw out yet which support the wii mote?)
Thanks
Sorry also had another question. Is it a good idea to install another launcher and if so whats the best way to do this is there some kind of lite rom I can install which wouldn't come with all the anoying smasung stuff and touch wiz?
I upgraded to Froyo via the reg hack, and having not done a factory reset, it was slow as **** even with OCLF.
But once I installed voodoo, it was like night and day. Vastly faster than 2.1 ever was, even with OCLF. And I still haven't done a factory reset, and probably won't.

Hi, im planning to do a sidegrade from doc's jpa v7.5 to the kies one.
And really would like to know how to get my phone as close to fresh as possible.
Like how to get rid of clockworkmod(or does it get gone by flashing a new firmware with odin?) Also how can i delete vodoo for good? i used it on a earlier firmware and used the disable lagfix folder way to disable it. Will it work just by deleting the whole folder?
The reason im asking this is tht i feel theres getting a lot of junk in my sd card and would be really nice to know how to get it away .
Well as no one wanted to tell me , i did a try and figured it out myself .
First removed lagfix(wich bricked my phone), luckely i had download mode.
Flashed jm2 with odin, let kies update my phone to jpa.
Then i did a factory reset, wipe cache, and format sd card!.
Installed Voodoo 5 pre6 , busybox, superuser.
Then i had jpa with vodoo and rooted so i could use titanium to get my apps back .
Gotta say so far this is a very good firmware, except the browser maybe, havent tested it so much yet.
As the title says, this is what I'm trying (have been trying....) to do.
I got my Captivate for Christmas 2010, I can't remember what exact version it was running, all I know is that for a fact it was Eclair.
I wish I knew what stock I had on my phone and all that jazz, but the one thing I never read before flashing or rooting my phone was that I should root and make a Nand Backup before hand. Oh well right?
Anyways, basically here is what I've done to my phone:
I flashed ODIN-1-Click for the leaked Froyo JI6 - I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears_1
had absolutely no problems, everything worked like a charm.
Next, I used SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse and I chose "Root" and "Enable Side-Loading"
again, no problems.
From there, I proceeded to do the following:
-Install of TiBu, AdFree, Terminal, Root Explorer, SGS Tools, and Busybox
-TiBu Used to "Freeze" most bloatware on phone
-Terminal given #su root command and approved
-AdFree added, packages installed
-Within Terminal, added exception to WordsWithFriends to allow ads
-SGS Tools used to replace default Camera App to allow power button for capture
-Root Explorer used to replace TW_Touch tone to modified 5% audio level version...I'm sorry, but at the lowest System Volume this is just way too loud.
-Installed Go Launcher EX and made my phone look awesome
-TiBu used to Freeze TW Launcher
I don't think there is anything else I've done with my phone that is really worth mentioning. No Lag-Fix unless it was included in my JI6, but I do know that I have free Wifi Tethering.
Now, for those still following, after all this, obviously the Official Official (Not-Leaked) Froyo came out, not a big deal, because I probably would've gone crazy just using Eclair for 2 months (I kinda flashed my phone on the 3rd day of owning it after coming from basically a RAZR V3).
Soooo, in my attempts, to get the official version of Froyo (flame on me, I don't care), I have "Bricked" my phone twice on separate occasions trying to go clean.
By bricked I mean AT&T Boot Loop of Doom w/o the ability to use any of the keys. So hey wouldn't you know it, but I have a USB Jig now.
1) WTF do people mean when they say to Flash back to Stock? There are like 20 different things available, which one is stock? and what would mine have been new out of box at Christmas 2010?
The thing that Bricked me twice was JF6 which I though was stock, guess not, I'm not sure... I have no idea why it won't work for me or if I'm doing something wrong, or I got an incomplete download of it, it's title is: I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0. On the other hand, I have managed to get JH2 to work (idk wtf JH2 is, I don't hear it often, but it got my phone to turn on), Kies actually managed to recognize my phone, however I could not update it in Kies and if I remember correctly, Mini-Kies wouldnt recognize the phone.
And also JI6 also allowed me to recover from Brick-mode, which I Flashed to Originally, and obviously it wont show up in any Kies in any way/shape/form...
Anyways, if anyone can provide any info, help, or advice, I would really, really, REALLY, appreciate it.
What am I doing wrong?
Help?.......
Now aside from that, I know there is a pre-release version of KB1 running around, but has anyone managed to get a version of the Official February 24th KB1 out to the masses for download that doesn't involve Kies?
Sorry to bump this, but I'm still looking for any possible advice anyone might have. I've tried using the search feature but to no avail. I've found "similar" things to mine, however no one seems to either have the same problem I have or be in the same situation.
I apologize for it being such a long read, but I just wanted to thoroughly describe my situation in the chance that it would be able to further increase the capability of someone helping me.
Here you go, these are the two files that people mean when they say go to "stock".
2.1 is the "Official Stock" for 2.1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
2.2 is the "Official Leak Stock" for 2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
As far as I know, there isn't a Odin One-Click for the "Official" Official 2.2 yet.
If updates are free if you're with AT&T... How about just going to 2.1, then upgrading it by connecting to AT&T that way? Just an idea
Sounds like the build of your phone is 1010 or higher so odin jf6 likely won't work, but you found that out .
You can try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
You are already through half the steps, just flash jh7ota
Or you could modify your recovery and install clockwork and flash cognition 4.1.1 which its more our less stock kbi that is already rooted and debloated
Not sure of a cmw flashable kb1
CM7
Excellent! I totally forgot about that, thanks mcord11758!
Ok, somethin i learned when using kies to upgrade to 2.2. 1) USB debugging has to be on. 2) Make sure to UNroot your phone before trying to upgrade with kies 3) I also had the boot loop. Restarted in recovery mode and cleared all user data. That fixed it.
Also, think about upgrading to superoneclick 1.7
BTW, if you want CWM to work, you should shell root before regular root (reboot after shell root) and dont forget to enable nonmarket apps
GOOD LUCK!
@venomio: I already have those two files, but thanks for confirming that no one has released an official KB1 2.2. I'm glad to know I just haven't failed despite looking thoroughly.
@mcord11758: I actually hadn't thought about that. I thought that I'd be set with JH2 in terms of being allowed by Kies to update.....yeah no I was wrong obviously. I just figured the additional steps involved with the JH7ota would make Kies hate me more. But yeah, I think this may be my solution- although if for whatever reason it didn't work it'd just be really annoying. I've already had to revert to JI6 twice now hoping for the Kies update.
Out of curiousity, why in the world does JH2 work on my phone?
And what exactly does it mean to have a 1010 Captivate?
Still @mcord11758: Now I do have clockwork recovery installed (still on JI6 as I'm typing this), however for whatever reason, I can't seem to see any of the bonus features that it should provide in the recovery screen. I think I've read that this is a typical problem and I need to get 3e_Recovery or something, but I wasn't really sure how it worked or how to apply it. And the hold up I have on Cognition is the fact that I don't know how easy it is to revert everything back to default (like lag fix and stuff). Any info on these topics would be appreciated
@mrhaley30705: Yeah, I'm updated to SuperOneClick 1.7 now. 1.5 Just happened to be what I used originally, and for whatever reason wouldn't work any longer after further trying to flash things in these recent turn of events. Long story short, after a lot of pain trying to re-root, I realized 1.7 was out, got it, and it worked.
I will say that I have avoided the Shell Root as I don't fully understand how it works and I've gotten by using just the "Root". Isn't Shell Root un-reversable? I'm just worried about that since I'm attempting to get a Kies Update.
@Everyone/All: I really appreciate all the feedback big time. This has been a pretty stressful, long process even though at times it has felt fun and rewarding.
I think I'm going to do what mcord11758 said when I'm not at my girlfriends place. For whatever reason, if I need my Jig, I don't want her to see cuz she'll know I'm messing with my phone again. (She gets upset at me when I get upset at the phone). I'll leave you with a fun image that I saw from someone's sig once.
Btw, anyone who posted above this will have received thanks.
I hope that's not totally lame of me.
Update: It worked!!!!
I Officially have the Official final release of KB1 Froyo 2.2
I used the following as suggested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
Afterwords I followed:
http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=368733
And I was able to get Kies Mini to recognize the phone (unlike with JI6) and allow me to select Phone Upgrade (Unlike with JH2).
One big thing I've seen, is that my phone is missing the GMS Updates, I do not have google's GenieWidget (News and Weather).
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, and I don't know if there is any fixes. I do remember though, that while I had JI6 installed, apk's of the GenieWidget I found around the web would not work.
I know it's probably lame, but I was actually hoping to get this, as I was trying to get it in JI6 as well.
Pic attached of my desktop showing Kies working.
Good stuff, great that you managed to get it going!
So I rooted my phone with CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip using Odin. However, my phone has the firmware version JPW ( I could've sworn it was JPY ), and then installed and ran One click Lag Fix and since doing it certain apps would crash and the phone became sluggish. So, I undid the Lag Fix but things got worse from there, such as not being able to add widgets to home screens.
So I performed a factory reset but the phone is still rooted and a little sluggish still. I've also noticed the addition of the messaging icon on the bottom bar and it wasn't there before.
How do I unroot the phone? Or am I stuck until I update to Gingerbread?
Cheers.
Ray
just flash the correct CF-root over the current one, using Odin,
then do a wipe in recovery and you should be fixed up.
if not, then its not related to the CF-root, you will have to flash a full firmware.
Thanks for the reply. However, there isn't a CF-Root for JPW nor is there a Firmware for JPW available for download from samfirmware.
I really should have looked before I leapt.
In conclusion, I'm an idiot.
All the best.
Ray
flash a kernel instead, that gives you the 2e recovery, plus a ton of extra tweaks
I've got the 2e recovery, thanks to the root I performed.
Whats worrying me is though, will my warranty be void either with my network carrier or with Samsung whilst this root is in place?
I understand Gingerbread is just around the corner, and that upgrading firmware will remove rooting, so I don't mind waiting a couple of weeks or so for the 2.3 update. After this balls up ( entirely my own fault ) I'm not confident of flashing any new firmwares or kernels or anything else until I've learned a thing or two first, as I've only had the phone a month and have mainly been a Nokia / Symbian user.
Many thanks for your help.
Ray
rooting will void warranty, but you can remove root access so know one ever knows,
flashing an official firmware will remove root, thats entirely upto you.
you can flash what you like, you can always go back to stock before sending off for repair
Well, being a total noob to Android I think I'll wait for Gingerbread and leave things on stock.
What disappointed me with Kies was I couldn't re-install the stock Firmware like I can do with my Nokia via Nokia Ovi suite or Nokia Software updater. That comes in really useful in situations such as this.
Oh well, I've learned some valuable lessons today so not all bad.
Once again thanks for the assistance.
All the best.
Ray
you can spoof kies to make it update to whatever you want
I tried that, and kies said an update was available. So I proceeded to update, Kies downloaded the update, then said my phone cannot be updated.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Ray
I have a Galaxy S which i rooted and installed a lagfix on. I think it was Ryans OCLF i used for the lagfix.
I want to update to the official Froyo available from T-mobile via kies but having lots of problems getting it to connect (as everyone does). I have backed up contacts etc. I havent bothered backing up apps as i just wrote down the settings i have in each one and will just reinstall them after the upgrade.
What im planning on doing was completely resetting the phone back to factory settings and wiping it altogether so i have a clean phone to do the upgrade.
The problems im expecting or want to know how to avoid is with the root and lagfix i have installed. Will doing a factory reset or other reset (hopefully somebody can tell me another way of resetting) get rid of the root and lagfix or do i need to do something manually before wiping the phone? I know of something about the lagfix creating partitions etc so would a factory reset cancel the lagfix or would it cause all sorts of problems?
How do i go about removing the lagfix and resetting to the standard software that came with the phone? Also i have apps that require root so if i unroot the phone will this cause problems when they try to start or will they just not work and not be an issue?
Im not running any custom roms just the original one that came on the phone.
Sorry for all the questions and a rather long first post but im hoping to do this soon as the phone is running like a bag of smelly brown stuff lol.
Disable the lagfix first and then wipe. Root will not go away but I dont think that would be problem.PS. If I would be you I would just use odin to upgrade, there is plenty of good guides including how to use odin
Undo lagfix before any firmware upgrade .Then factory reset then go to Kies .
Remove lagfix as per the instructions with whatever lagfix you used .
Unroot not a problem its only a user administrative rights fix giving you greater access .
Personally i undo anything i can before an upgrade .
jje
Yes i would definitely undo everything before upgrading its just a question of how i do it.
I used Ryans OneClickLagFix app that was on the market at the time but now it has been altered because it allowed you to root and google didnt like this. I still have the original version i downloaded on the phone so is it just a case of clicking on "remove lagfix" and that will sort it?
Also if the root remains on the phone after i have wiped it, will this cause any problems when i put froyo on it? Is there not a different method or file for rooting froyo to the one i have used on 2.1?
on "remove lagfix" and that will sort it?
Correct .
jje
Also click Remove Ext2 Tools, and the go into the Scheduler changer and return it to CFG and uncheck the tweak buttons, if you messed with any of that.
In which order should i do all of those?
Should i remove the ext2 tools and return cfg settings etc to default before i remove the lagfix or after?
So just a quick update.
Something went totally wrong the other night on its own. This is before i had even thought of upgrading that night. Was sitting on facebook happily playing away when it started force closing within a few seconds of opening. Tried to open the market to reinstall the facebook app and the market force closed in a few seconds. It did this with every app including the email and phone etc. Even the RyansOCLF would forceclose so i couldnt remove the lagfix or unroot etc. All my settings for apps and launcher pro settings had disappeared. Only a couple of icons i had set on the home screen of launcher pro remained but i couldnt use any of them. All my phone logs were there and so were my texts etc but everything else had reset. When i tried to reapply some of my settings and then restart the phone, when i had finished the restart the settings i had reapplyed had defaulted again. Disaster!!
The only thing i could do was run a factory reset from the options menu. I crossed my fingers hoping this wouldnt brick the phone and alas it worked perfectly. Sorted out kies and connected the phone and installed 2.2.1 android. The lagfix had been cleared by the factory reset. I keep wondering if this is why i had so many problems with it taking ages to start up before. Maybe because the lagfix never really worked properly it never fully rebuilt the file system so was removed easily? Although the benchmarks were coming up double the speed of the fastest device on the results so not too sure how it was performing so fast with a duff lagfix...who knows. Anyway got it all up and running and rooted and lagfixed using the voodoo fix. Stuck launcher pro on setup everything. Got the apps i previously purchased reinstalled and restored any apps i wanted from titanium backup. Works like a dream and alot better memory usage aswell.
Thanks for all the help guys but it seems although i didnt follow any of the instructions you all posted (not out of choice...just because the phone physically wouldnt let me) it seemed to get the upgrade done without any problems.
Hello guys.
Official Gingerbread is finally available on Portugal.
I have currently Stock Froyo + Speedmod installed on my Galaxy S, so how can i update to Gingerbread?
Can i just update and Speedmod will still work?
Or should i install a stock kernel, then update, then install the Speedmod (Gingerbread version)?
Or i shouldn't update at all?
i'm interested in this too,i'm in the same situation (froyo+speedmod) and i'm quite a noob
is there someone who can patiently give us an hint about that? also about a good battery life gingerbread rom?
This is what I did.
1. Disable any lagfix - convert back to rfs (very important).
2. Back up all apps, contacts, data, photos etc from internal memory. Use something like Titanium backup or Mybackup pro.
3. Update through Kies for an official update.
4. Install latest Speedmod kernel for gingerbread (not Froyo version). Use odin.
5. Install superuser from clockwork mod recovery.
6. From recovery, do a factory data reset (make sure you have everything backed up first!)
7. Restore previously backed up apps, data etc, sync with google calendar.
8. Redo lagfix from recovery (convert to ext4).
Battery life at first seemed all over the place but has now settled down and is similar to Froyo/speedmod.
The phone is smoother and faster to use.
Thank you a lot!
That's exactly what i'm going to do!
thanks colin! 1 thing: i read somewhere that if you deleted some bloat app from operator (e.g. o2) you wont be able to update from kies anymore. is that true?
my phone it's not a locked one but anyway i think i always got o2 apps on it (which i unfortunately uninstalled instead of freezing it) and carrier-related updates.
am i going to have any kind of prob in the process?

If Kies is showing that there is an update available then I think you should be ok.
If not then it is a case of flashing the whole firmware with odin. Open phone dialer and enter *#1234# and you will see the firmware details you are on now. It is worth making a note of these so you can reflash your current firmware if there is a problem.
okidoki i'll try that!
update:
PDA:I9000AOJP5
PHONE:I9000AOJP3
CSC:I9000VIAJP3
pretty old looks like o2 release. being my phone unlocked i never understood why i got o2 releases on it
so when i am not able to upgrade by kies i should reflash stock thru odin.
what parameter (pda/phone/csc) i have to look at to get the right firmware?
Everything is working better than ever, except for one little thing: The GPS.
Today i turned on GPS and tried to use my navigation software (CoPilot) and the GPS signal just didn't fix at all!
I ended by not using it, but i don't know why it doesn't work. It always worked wonderfully well before this update...

Still try kies first. If no luck there is a lot of info in this thread.

Make sure you can get into recovery mode first. Power button, volume up and home pressed all at once. Let go home button when Samsung logo appears.
ok thanks for the infos! i'll do it all when i can have a bit of relax,i am relocating so i need a working phone during these days
so i did it then!
flashed darky's resurrection 10.2 and then updated to doctorz rom jvt leaving ext4 enabled with no probs: another phone
just needs a good theme now..
