[Q] help! galaxy s touch screen freezes while charging - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I have a samsung galaxy s vibrant from bell, and lately I have not been able to use my phone while charging. My phone lags and does not respond when i try to unlock the phone to go to the main screen. If I want to make phone calls and while charging the phone i would have to dial the number first then plug in my charger. But once its plugged in the touch screen does not respond at all. please hellp!! I;ve tried deleting apps to see if i have downloaded anything that may have caused it but it hasnt worked. I tried soft reseting, taking the battery out. So far nothing has worked. Any one else with the same problem?

Same Problem
I have the same problem with my Samsung Vibrant....I don't see the same problem with my usb to wall-outlet charger....however, the touch screen freezes up when I use a third party charger. Please help.

I have noticed this too. Anyone smart why this happens? Its not just galaxy s phones btw.

Noticed the same problem. While charging, the Touch screen doesn't work. Especially while using Swype, the Line is jagged.

....and automatic PIN
I have exactly the same problem (i9000, Sweden, 2.1 update 1). Unfortunately I did not think of the charger so I kept removing the battery
When connected to the charger when starting the phone and I have many pictures or video files on my memory card, the text "media scanning" and "media scanning finished" (or something like that) keeps repeating in the system info. When the PIN code windows appears, numbers are being highlighted quite randomly. Sometimes the "ok" button is indicated as well, so sometimes I have been forced to use my PUK code because all 3 PIN code tries had been done with noone actually touching the phone
Again, without the charger (and/or many media files) it works.
Maybe froyo could help

I am on 2.2 Froyo and it still happens for me.

Same problem with Froyo JPO!!

Problem with Selective devices or all the devices are having the same issue?
We need more confirmations.

thats because third party chargers have different voltage and charge that will affect your capacitive touchscreen. HTC chargers are recommended, since they are also touch screen based phones.

just searched for this problem and solved it immedieatly thanks to hoopjunkie's comments
i've 2 chargers,
the one came with the phone has output 5.00V 0.7A
one claiming to be samsung has output 4.75V 0.4A
I had never used the phone while in charge so never experienced this issue until 5mins ago
for some reason i was using the "fake" one since.
lesson learned check the voltage values, which i normally do, but trusting too much to the sellers got me.
ow and for the record I'm on froyo 2.2 i9000xxjpc

I am using the Stock charger. Same problem even with the USB Charging.

i wonder if theres a solution to this issue?
i am really getting tired of this problem -- i am using a nokia n97 charger.
i want to be able to download stuff from the market while the device is plugged in.

Hi, I got the same problem: no touchscreen when connected to USB of my laptop. I already noticed my phone acted weird next to my laptop. Once I ejected my cd-player the touchscreen worked again! So the electronics in the cd-player interfered with the touchscreen.

I've got a Rogers Captivate running 2.2 and I am having this same problem... it only seems to happen since the upgrade. This is using the stock charger and USB. Are there any possible solutions to this?

Same happens for my Samsung Galaxy S while charging from the stock wall charger. But the touchscreen works perfectly fine while charging from a PC's USB port using stock microUSB cable.
I think the problem lies with the charging current. The electrical field generated around the charger's wire due to a 500 mA (5 V) charging current supplied by PC's USB port seems to be doing no harm, while the 700 mA (5 V) charging current of the stock wall charger seems to be generating an electrical field high enough to confuse the capacitive sensors of the touchscreen. Perhaps the usage of a shielding core -- just like on the stock microUSB cable -- on the stock wall charger would help in negating the ill effects of the electrical field generated by a 700 mA charging current, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, my current workaround for the problem is obviously to charge from a PC's USB port. When a PC is not around or not switched on, I'm using a 5V, 500mA charger which was bundled with my iTech bluetooth headset. Obviously, both these methods have a shortcoming, that is slow charging compared to that of the stock wall charger. In my experience, this is a problem only when I use my phone for Wi-Fi tethering, in which case the battery capacity percentage continues to drop even when connected to a 500 mA charger. The positive side of 500 mA charging is that it gives a slighly better service life for the battery.

Same problem here, send my SGS to samsung and problema solved new display and display circuit its a know issue with some SGS's

Vehicle chargers won't work...

Okay, I'm stumped. I'm already getting a replacement device from HTC under warranty so my problem is solved, but like many of you, I HATE NOT HAVING AN EXPLANATION FOR THINGS!
I'm also wondering if anyone else has had this problem? About 10-Days ago my Kaiser (Tilt) stopped charging via the automotive charger. The A-C charger works fine, but the vehicle charger sent to me with my device from AT&T completely stopped charging my device. I went to the AT&T store & bought a new charger, It didn't work. I changed power points, & cigarette lighter in the vehicle &, it wouldn't work. I tried the charger in the vehicle of two different AT&T sales guys & also tried multiple chargers, & it wouldn't work. Is there any reason why the unit would lose it's ability to charge via a vehicle charger while still retaining it's ability to charge through USB to computer & through the A/C home charger? It seems to me that if the charge portion of the MB was fried, then all charging would be affected.
So how can my device charge fine through all means EXCEPT the vehicle charger?
Again, AT&T is sending me a new device, but I hate not having an explanation for the problem, drives me Nucking Futs!!!
Any ideas, anyone?
Thx!
I dont want to sound rude but have you checked your power settings?
Under the "Advanced" it has a option for "When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC."
If this is ticked it will not charge via the in car charger.
It's a known issue, not just with the Tilt
I had the same problem with my Axim X50 and X51v.
The original sync/charge cable wouldn't charge from the car's lighter, while non-branded cables did so without any problems at all.
This happened with other Axims as well, so I know that it wasn't a defective unit.
I then purchased an HP Ipaq HW6910, and encountered the same issue with my wife's Mazda 5 - the HW6910 woudn't charge if the cable was connected to the charger, when I started the car. It only worked if the adapter and cable were disconnected while staring the car. This did not happen with my Mazda 3 or my Mitsubishi.
And another thing I discovered, is that some cables are not designed for use with car chargers, but they work perfectly with AC chargers.
I bought a couple of retracting sync/charge cables for my HW6910, they worked only when connected to the mains. But regular cables worked perfectly with both power sources.

OF COURSE I DID.
Yeah, It charges fine from the PC, & from an A/C source. But the HTC TYTNII car charger that came with my device, as well as replacement car chargers don't work.

Funny, I just ran out to the truck & grabbed one of the guys Blackberry chargers & it looked like it was working. But SK Tools reports an even bigger (negative) amp draw (like discharging twice the normal rate). So with the BB charger it dischages even faster. Maybe reversed polarity Guess I should've checked first. That's a moot point now though as I await my new unit. Weird though.
Well i was using a BB charger that worked fine up until this morning. i bought my phone when it first came out so it wasnt easy to find a charger made for it at the time. i never had a problem until today. i also noticed that the Usb terminal on my device was bent. i called htc but they charge way too much to fix it. i have no idea how or when the terminal broke but it does still charge when pluged into pc or into the wall. ill have to spend $80 to have ppctechs fix it.
wassup, i`m in SF Cali, I had a att 8525 that was doing the same thing. I assumed it was the phone when it 1st started happening. After a week or so it was bothering me so i started playing with it trying to figure out if it was a setting, bad flash, or hardware. I noticed that if the phone was off it wood charge but not if it was on. I started flashing my phone and testing (for trouble shooting purposes) and for the first 2 or 3 roms problem still existed, then one of the roms i flashed to would turn on the back light as if it was charging but no LED or charge, when this started happening I realized that if i turned my fone off it wood start charging and continue to charge when i booted the fone back up. So if when i got in the car i pluged in/ shutdown/ waited like 45 sec or 1 min. / then booted it would temp. fix the problem for as long as my fone was on the cable. At some point after that many weeks/roms later i noticed it was working correctly again, So I had decided it was a glitch in the rom, But i`m not a Dev. or fone guru so I really dont know what it was, but hope this helps someone.... PEACE!! ~bboyphrog1~beatz`n pieces krooh~

The slight diagonal slant on the bottom right? It's supposed to be like that. All AT&T Tilts (and I'd assume TyTN II's, but I've never had one to compare) have a mini-usb port that looks that way.
i looked at a 8525 and the usb terminal was straight. i even took a pencil and straightened mine out. it should be bent. that wouldn't make sense because the charges slot is not bent. i think the problem is that one side of the terminal is not soldered to the board and can easily be broken. in another thread 3 people have the same issue. as far as the car charger goes ill do some testing but until today it was charging fine while the phone was on.
this issue is known ,it even happens with the htc tynt.... by simlpy rebooting while in the charger it starts working again ..at least with mine.
I've had the same problem. I went to the lcoal AT&T store and they said they never heard of it so I thought it was just me. It looks like many of you have the issue. I wish I knew what it was. It was really bad with my 8525,
i thought Faria developed a cab to fix this issue in the hermes forum? might be worth having a search for it and when i get home i will see if i have a copy on my pc.
any of you guys get anywhere with this? I have exactly the same problem. posted in a couple of other threads actually.
Not sure whether the usb port is damaged, but it's certainly is slightly "down" on the right hand side.
It charges perfectly on the mains and perfectly from usb, but not in the car.
I have used a normal car charger, spent £50 on a Carcomm powered mount and tried one of the separate chargers that you plug the standard mini usb cable into. Nothing works. This is driving me crazy (if you'll excuse the pun!) a the primary reason I bought the Kaiser, was for GPS.
Thanks
well i also just found out 2 of my minisync cables dont work anymore. 1 of them still charges the phone but neither of them sync the phone anymore. it still syncs fine through a normal usb cable.
I am using a moto Razr car charger and it works fine so far.
Okay, confirmed on my replacement Tilt: The USB port is arrow straight. Someone earlier mentioned it being lower on the right side & indeed my DEAD DEVICE was as such. Looks like a bad job of connecting the port to the device.
NOTE!!!!!!
It's a good idea to take a look at your charger before you plug it in to make sure the charger USB connector is not bent or mi-sshappened.
i have the same problem i went through 4 att car chargers adn 5 phones. They are crap. Its not the phone its the charger if you play with it you will see that it comes and goes. The end tip on the charger is bad doesnt make a good connection. i have yet to find a good car charger.
Mine stopped charging using the car charger supplied and a brodit. A friend's kaiser charges OK with the same chargers.
No-one has mentioned it in this thread, but my phone, shows "charging" in the battery control panel and the LED lights up to confirm this. The percentage charge value decreases as though it isn't being charged!
As others have done I noticed that the corner of the plastic centre of the connector nearest the reset hole was slightly bent and I assume (though can't remember doing so) that I missed the reset hole with the stylus tip and pushed it in. Menu driven resets for me from now on!
HTC Europe didn't know anything about this fault, so seem to be happy to repair / replace it under warranty. It's with them at the moment, so I'll have to wait and see.

Please let me know the outcome. mine is getting worse by the day.
Now I'm confused.
Because the device charges over USB I just assumed it would draw <500mA (the max output of a USB port) but the specs say it draws up to one amp.
Having owned a high-drawing device before (Axim x50v) I know that trying to pull this out of a USB port can blow your motherboard. So are these safe to charge over USB??? How does the device know whether its being charged over USB or mains - are there different charging pins on the connector?

unresponsive screen when plugged in

Hello, I have could this problem is happening to other people but. Haven't could a solution for it.
Whenvi Plugg my galaxy into the charger the touch screen either doesn't respond or pressing in a spot I haven't pressed. I think this problem is because the screen is capacitive but this doesn't happen at all with my ipod touch.
This makes the phone impossible to work with with while its plugged in
Any solution for this?
it might be defective
or simply it needs to be re-calibrated
mine doesn't do it
but i have read on the forum many people had the same problem as you do
they either took it back for warranty or got it fixed some how
i think it should work as soon as you recalibrate the touch screen when it's plugged in
How do I calibrate it?
Are you not using the original charger?
I'm getting this too, with the original charger, but not with a usb charger.

Happens with my brothers I9000 too! D:
On mine if I'm not TOUCHING the phone case or it's charging the touchscreen gives unreliable input.
90% of the time this isn't a problem because I have to hold the phone in order to use it.
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I just got this phone and I am having the exact same problem. Using either the original charger or an apple ipod charger I have the same issue. It also happens on the original ROM and on Darky's. It works fine while it's plugged into a computer and charging though.
Has anyone been able to remedy this problem without sending it in for warranty repair?
hi, i get this too, only happens when plugged in.
anyone find a fix?
ok, i kinda found it out.
Its because the charger being used isnt properly grounded or something which means there is a small electrical charge being picked up the screen which causes the screen to jump about. Doesnt happen when the phone isnt plugged in or when its being charged via micro usb connected to my laptop so I think the charger is to blame not software
according to someone else its because of
It will be high-frequency noise on the DC output voltage of the charger. Chargers use a high-frequency DC-DC converter method and the cheaper ones don't do a very good job of filtering the high frequency out of the DC at the other end. This noise enters your phone and plays havoc with the sensitive circuits in the capacitive touchscreen.
It is nothing to do with grounding of the input side of the power supply; when you ground the output side (the USB plug) with your hand, your body capacitance filters out some/all of the noise.
but anyway at the end of the day its still a fault with the charger whatever the technical details maybe.
Is there a charger out there that will not experience these problems?

Could you post some details about your charger? 2/3 Pin? voltage? amperage? Input/output amounts? etc...

The wall-charger has an output of 5V, 1A. Input is 100-240V, 50/60Hz, 180mA. Looks like 3-pins. It came bundeled with my Logitech G700. Also, when I plug the phone in, I get those three choices you usually get when charging from a pc: "Kies-mode", "mass storage" etc. I just press return on my phone when I see this. So it seems as if this charger is a bit more advanced with some kind of chip in it. Perhaps any Logitech/Microsoft-charger will do.

Pin was the wrong word, I meant prongs. Does it have two or three that go into the wall socket? The third being the grounding wire.
I have a charger for my bluetooth headset but it only outputs 550mA. Is that enough to charge the phone. The original is 700mA.

[Q] Question about charging up my phone with different chargers.

I have a powermat in my room that i use for charging my phone up when I go to bed at night. But it seems that I can only charge my phone up by having the phone on. When I turn it off and plug my phone in, it just turns the phone back on. Although this doesnt happen when I plug in my phone into the Samsung usb cable that came with my phone, when its plugged into my computer.
Can anybody explain to me why this is happening? Just a curious thought I had.
I have experienced this with my powermat as well. One thing I noticed is that it wouldn't do it on my wifes phone running continuum 4. Only on mine which was running gingerbread roms. Didn't matter which rom either. Once I upgraded her phone to gingerbread hers starting doing it.
Could this be a gingerbread kernel thing? It does it with every different GB kernel I've used also.
A new day and perhaps a definitive answer to this. Would anybody else happen to know a solution to this? Or why it would be causing this issue?
I haven't noticed mine turning on beyond the charging notification. I've used the stock 2.1 and 2.2 and also the FireFly 3.0 Rom. I did notice a while back on some forums on Android Central that people who were using chargers other than the stock chargers were experiencing different things. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the exact voltages the charger supplies to the phone versus a USB from a computer and so on. Maybe it was the amps. Anyway these minute differences in the voltage tells the phone how to respond to being plugged in. I've got a couple of wall chargers from some long gone Verizon phone (RAZR I think) and my Captivate thinks it's connected to a PC and starts USB Debugging. (I am currently working on some Apps so I have left that option on for now.) The phone charges just fine and the chargers only have current through the 5V and ground pins so it shouldn't be able to do anything to my phone anyway.
Perhaps there is a setting in the ROMs that you are using that tells the phone to be turned on when connected to a PC and your phone is reading your charger as a PC. Just a thought. There might be a setting or something in your USB settings that would let you toggle that or it might just be in the ROM. I hope that gives you a possible line to try and start looking for your answer. Sorry I don't know more about it.

[Q] Salsa touch response works weird while charging

Hi,
I have this strange problem happening since yesterday on my brand new Salsa. When I put it on charging and leave it on a wooden table, the touch screen responds weird to my touch. The ring lock will not open all the way or shortcuts will work weird. The soft keys at the bottom too go absurd not responding or giving different options.
If I pick the handset (probably providing grounding), everything works normal thereafter. I'm using only the original charger provided with handset.
Additionally even the sound into my car's auxillary port is behaving as weird filtering or dimming the vocal frequencies but allowing the music to get through.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
Only incident to have caused this I guess is when the sales guy I went to plugged the phone onto a blackberry charger yesterday for a few seconds.
Could it have caused some damage to some internal part - diode or something that is leaking AC voltage onto the capacitive screen ? Can I have it repaired at HTC ?
Since it's not even a week old, I'm too distressed about the weirdness. PLEASE HELP!
does seem like it could of done some damage as blackberry's do take a lot more juice than the salsa, personally i would take it back and tell them about the problems you have had only since the dude abused the phone lol
I will surely be taking it back but want to confirm if its the problem with the phone or charger, because I do not see this problem when I charge from my laptops USB.
And I want to know what it is before I take it to them. Its much safer to find the problem and tell them rather than allowing them to figure it out themselves and in turn damage something else.
Thanks
your laptop will deal 5v 1a max before the computer will cut off the usb supply due to risk of overload, new blackberry chargers deal a lot more than that due to the juice the device needs to charge, almost like different laptop chargers the difference in the supply would kill your laptop, i don't have any problems with my device regardless of surface it is resting on.
I have the same problem
I have the same problem, but it was observed from the time of purchase. So do not worry and take the phone in hand))
Resolved
With some searching I resolved this problem or I can say I at least know why this is happening.
It is the charger that is faulty and not the handset. I changed it with another HTC charger I had and the problem disappeared. I figured the most logical explanation is what I read in one of the post elsewhere in this forum.
The charger could be faulty to be leaking some AC voltage along with the charging DC juice. This leaked voltage interferes with the sensitive capacitive touch screen. If we hold the handset in hand, we are providing a natural grounding and hence the problem disappears.
I personally would not like this to continue and so I'm going to take it back to my vendor for replacing the charger or if the need be, buy a new one.

Try using another charger and see the difference. Hope you can get your charger repaired or replaced!
Take care.
this is due to a grounding problem or/and leaked ac current....
This problem occurs when your charger supplies more power than required by the phone to charge. The only solution for your prolem is changing your charger.

I had once another problem, that my Salsa overheated (red-green blinking) when I charged it and my Wifi was on. Maybe a background-process could be responsible.

[Q] Galaxy note not charging

Hi,
First off, I have a non rooted, stock Galaxy note. It's not modded in any way.
The problem started occurring yesterday, all was just fine before. Since then, it won't charge no matter what USB cable or charger I use.
1) Phone on
- I plug the charger to the phone : nothing. The phone doesn't register being connected to the OEM wall-charger.
- I connect the phone using the OEM USB cable to my computer (tryed 3 different computers) : Nothing.
I also tried another charger and several USB cables : no luck.
2) Phone off
- I plug the charger / I connect my phone to a computer using USB cable : the phone boot up and doesn't charge the battery.
Any thought ?
Thx in advance.
Try using some compressed air to clean out the usb port on the Galaxy Note. I had a similar issue with an iPhone once and there ended up being a piece of lint stuck on 1 of the contacts which made it unable to charge. Could be the case with your phone. Other than that contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Thx for the advice.
I'll try that out and call over Samsung.
Try factory reset if that could help..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Update:
I tried a micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) and it's working fine : recognized and plugged in USB stick is working fine.
Also, I tried a factory reset after backuping my data. All went fine but sadly the problem is still there : no charging.

After two days, It started working again as if it never happened.
Still wondering what might have caused it
Might be the dust that settled on the battery pins and the contacts on your phone.. happens some times .. glad its back to work.. poor thing..

Happened to me too! It wouldn't charge until I turned off the phone. It worked after I cleaned the phone and usb cable's metal parts--sorry no correct jargon for this--with rubbing alcohol. Make sure there's no lint left from the cleaning.
Yup, had this. On charge with stock charger in the mains. Battery dropping fast, back (top) getting warm. I turned the screen off, left it for 5 mins. Looked again, it was 2% less!
Reboot fixed it.
There did not seem to be any rogue program using the CPU, but I now have a meter and a better logger to examine this if it occurs again. I assume the system got into a loop somewhere, although the phone was normally responsive.

Happening to my phone as well right now. I was worried that the battery is dying so I got a spare online. But it doesn't make sense that its charging and know that it is on one state and not the other.
I panicked so I replaced Rocket Rom with Cassie's. It's still doing this.
Have you guys checked if there is a weird smell from your battery? I thought that was something to look at but dont all batteries smell like that?
galaxy note is experiencing the same hardware problems as galaxy s2 phones. I am very pissed off at samsung. I bought a new galaxy note in dominican republic and after one month of delicate use the phone developed charging problems. Drive mode would start automatically or the phone would shut off all by itself and a battery removal reset would turn the phone on again. then finally, the phone would stay in charging mode even after the usb charge cable is removed. the phone would discharge quickly and then would not turn on. I finally gave the phone to repair dept at claro phone company. they would not fix it and are just showing me a middle finger. Now I guess, I would have to learn to change the charging port myself. After seeing galaxy s2 videos, I see many ribbon contacts would get corroded and need to be cleaned frequently. Many phones were just less than 2 months old and had so much corrosion on the contacts. this is bad design and I think the high current draw for a dual core phone of that huge screen size is causing all kinds of electrical corrosion on the contacts inside the phone. this sucks majorly as I loved the phone when I had it working fine. Now I think I have bought a problem with my saved cash. I will try to repair my own phone soon as I get it back from the repair dept.
My Galaxy Note is doing a similar thing. Not all the same symptoms, but a few similarities.
The other night, when the charger was plugged in the phone kept changing it's mind whether it was plugged in or not - probably every few seconds I was getting the chime it makes when you plug the phone in. I eventually managed to charge the phone by turning it off, removing the battery, replacing it, plugging the charger in, waiting for it to start charging, then turning it on.
Today my phone was trying to tell me it was charging when it wasn't even plugged in to anything!
As with the above post, my phone has been getting hot occasionally and the drive mode has started by itself a few times.
I've used three chargers and four cables.
I'll be taking it along to where I bought it from later on today.
Battery not charging
G Note Battery is not charging .. same problem as of 1st post.
Changed usb cables, chargers, thru PC, laptop, direct wall, cleaning etc
Every thing fails. one month old set ?
OMG, glad to know I'm not the only one. Bought a Galaxy Note from a brazilian network provider (VIVO) and after 1 week of usage I'm experiencing the same problems as you guys.
My phone will only charge when it is powered off and USB connection does not work anymore (even in download mode). Before the problem onset, I noticed some MTP connection and SD Card rescanning without connecting to the PC.
Did a factory reset and got no results. Downloaded Odin Mobile and flashed stock rom and the problem persists.
Has anyone found a fix or the cause for this?
Thanks!
Missing my old Galaxy S...
Strange! After a full night charge, now I can unplug and plug the battery and continue charging from where I stop without turning it off.
I can now get beeps when connecting to PC. It show MTP-Inicialization in the Note screen but I have no access to to Note partitions in Windoes Explorer.
Update: One more strange thing just happened now.
Went to college and left it charging. When I came back at night, tried to connect the Note to the PC and everything is working ok now.
What?!?! Now I'm confused. How can I send it to warranty now? I think I'll have to wait a couple more days.
issue as well
That is my 3rd galaxy note, first one screen cracked, second dont ask me why it was not modified at all but it was so sluggish and froxze all the time, my 3rd one it is rooted device and i have similar issue...I am thinking is it because i was charging it from my wife's htc one phone? I thought they would have the same pins...anyway it is doomed, i tried so many chargers and problem not solved
ok i can comfirm to everyone that i have fixed the problem by buying contact cleaner spray and sprayed inside the usb and beautiful all back to normal!
Nooo..
Have a charging problem as well :/ It detects the charging cable and shows the battery icon with the circle about to charge. But it just turns off before it starts charging, turns on shows the icon again, turns off, turns on, shows the battery icon and so on. I have tried with two different chargers. For me i looks like the voltage is too low? Maybe the battery needs a jumpstart? I'll just leave it in the charger and see what happens. Suggestions welcome
Edit: It's just two weeks old, damn it. Last night I used it untill the battery was empty. That is why I think the voltage is so low it doesnt accept charge.
Edit2: Fixed! Puh! I was right. Battery needed a higher mah to start the charging. Leaving the post as it is for future reference.
same problem here, however it charges from my laptop... how strange?
