[Q] Question about charging up my phone with different chargers. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a powermat in my room that i use for charging my phone up when I go to bed at night. But it seems that I can only charge my phone up by having the phone on. When I turn it off and plug my phone in, it just turns the phone back on. Although this doesnt happen when I plug in my phone into the Samsung usb cable that came with my phone, when its plugged into my computer.
Can anybody explain to me why this is happening? Just a curious thought I had.

I have experienced this with my powermat as well. One thing I noticed is that it wouldn't do it on my wifes phone running continuum 4. Only on mine which was running gingerbread roms. Didn't matter which rom either. Once I upgraded her phone to gingerbread hers starting doing it.
Could this be a gingerbread kernel thing? It does it with every different GB kernel I've used also.

A new day and perhaps a definitive answer to this. Would anybody else happen to know a solution to this? Or why it would be causing this issue?

I haven't noticed mine turning on beyond the charging notification. I've used the stock 2.1 and 2.2 and also the FireFly 3.0 Rom. I did notice a while back on some forums on Android Central that people who were using chargers other than the stock chargers were experiencing different things. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the exact voltages the charger supplies to the phone versus a USB from a computer and so on. Maybe it was the amps. Anyway these minute differences in the voltage tells the phone how to respond to being plugged in. I've got a couple of wall chargers from some long gone Verizon phone (RAZR I think) and my Captivate thinks it's connected to a PC and starts USB Debugging. (I am currently working on some Apps so I have left that option on for now.) The phone charges just fine and the chargers only have current through the 5V and ground pins so it shouldn't be able to do anything to my phone anyway.
Perhaps there is a setting in the ROMs that you are using that tells the phone to be turned on when connected to a PC and your phone is reading your charger as a PC. Just a thought. There might be a setting or something in your USB settings that would let you toggle that or it might just be in the ROM. I hope that gives you a possible line to try and start looking for your answer. Sorry I don't know more about it.

huge problem. Need Help please

Alright my phone has randomly stopped charging and its very annoying. I thought it was a bug in JF's 1.5 so I reflashed back to RC29 and rerooted and got back to cupcake with apps2sd and everything. It still stops charging. Here's where it gets weird though, it only stops charging if I hold my phone in landscape view, otherwise in portrait it charges. And it also continues to not charge if my phone is completely off, but in landscape. Does anyone know how to fix this or will I have to get a new G1?
Could be a loose charging port. If you have an extra charger try that. There is really no other reason why is would do that. The firmware your running shouldn't effect it at all.
I had some weird problems similar. First question are you using USB charge cable from a PC or AC adapter. I've burned through 2 USB HTC cables connected via usb off my pc, but charges fine from an AC, USB car charger, and non HTC mini USB cable from an External HDD.
problem solved
Alright thanks for all your guys' suggestions, but it turns out I was blaming the phone when the real problem was my charger. I was only testing this problem on my stock G1 charger, but I used my old blackberry one and it worked fine. So I guess I'm just going to have to use a blackberry charger till I get my new phone. Thank you!
Same thing happened to me, except i ended up taking it to tmobile, waited in line, cute girl line, got up to her, told her whats wrong, she takes my g1, and plugs in a new charger, it works, i just stood there looking dumbfounded, and she had that "what are you an idiot" look on her face, haha
yeah, chargers go out all the time

[Q] help! galaxy s touch screen freezes while charging

Hi guys, I have a samsung galaxy s vibrant from bell, and lately I have not been able to use my phone while charging. My phone lags and does not respond when i try to unlock the phone to go to the main screen. If I want to make phone calls and while charging the phone i would have to dial the number first then plug in my charger. But once its plugged in the touch screen does not respond at all. please hellp!! I;ve tried deleting apps to see if i have downloaded anything that may have caused it but it hasnt worked. I tried soft reseting, taking the battery out. So far nothing has worked. Any one else with the same problem?
Same Problem
I have the same problem with my Samsung Vibrant....I don't see the same problem with my usb to wall-outlet charger....however, the touch screen freezes up when I use a third party charger. Please help.
I have noticed this too. Anyone smart why this happens? Its not just galaxy s phones btw.
Noticed the same problem. While charging, the Touch screen doesn't work. Especially while using Swype, the Line is jagged.
....and automatic PIN
I have exactly the same problem (i9000, Sweden, 2.1 update 1). Unfortunately I did not think of the charger so I kept removing the battery
When connected to the charger when starting the phone and I have many pictures or video files on my memory card, the text "media scanning" and "media scanning finished" (or something like that) keeps repeating in the system info. When the PIN code windows appears, numbers are being highlighted quite randomly. Sometimes the "ok" button is indicated as well, so sometimes I have been forced to use my PUK code because all 3 PIN code tries had been done with noone actually touching the phone
Again, without the charger (and/or many media files) it works.
Maybe froyo could help
I am on 2.2 Froyo and it still happens for me.
Same problem with Froyo JPO!!
Problem with Selective devices or all the devices are having the same issue?
We need more confirmations.
thats because third party chargers have different voltage and charge that will affect your capacitive touchscreen. HTC chargers are recommended, since they are also touch screen based phones.
just searched for this problem and solved it immedieatly thanks to hoopjunkie's comments
i've 2 chargers,
the one came with the phone has output 5.00V 0.7A
one claiming to be samsung has output 4.75V 0.4A
I had never used the phone while in charge so never experienced this issue until 5mins ago
for some reason i was using the "fake" one since.
lesson learned check the voltage values, which i normally do, but trusting too much to the sellers got me.
ow and for the record I'm on froyo 2.2 i9000xxjpc
I am using the Stock charger. Same problem even with the USB Charging.
i wonder if theres a solution to this issue?
i am really getting tired of this problem -- i am using a nokia n97 charger.
i want to be able to download stuff from the market while the device is plugged in.

dump the nokia charger and get a genuine galaxy one
Hi, I got the same problem: no touchscreen when connected to USB of my laptop. I already noticed my phone acted weird next to my laptop. Once I ejected my cd-player the touchscreen worked again! So the electronics in the cd-player interfered with the touchscreen.
I've got a Rogers Captivate running 2.2 and I am having this same problem... it only seems to happen since the upgrade. This is using the stock charger and USB. Are there any possible solutions to this?
Same happens for my Samsung Galaxy S while charging from the stock wall charger. But the touchscreen works perfectly fine while charging from a PC's USB port using stock microUSB cable.
I think the problem lies with the charging current. The electrical field generated around the charger's wire due to a 500 mA (5 V) charging current supplied by PC's USB port seems to be doing no harm, while the 700 mA (5 V) charging current of the stock wall charger seems to be generating an electrical field high enough to confuse the capacitive sensors of the touchscreen. Perhaps the usage of a shielding core -- just like on the stock microUSB cable -- on the stock wall charger would help in negating the ill effects of the electrical field generated by a 700 mA charging current, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, my current workaround for the problem is obviously to charge from a PC's USB port. When a PC is not around or not switched on, I'm using a 5V, 500mA charger which was bundled with my iTech bluetooth headset. Obviously, both these methods have a shortcoming, that is slow charging compared to that of the stock wall charger. In my experience, this is a problem only when I use my phone for Wi-Fi tethering, in which case the battery capacity percentage continues to drop even when connected to a 500 mA charger. The positive side of 500 mA charging is that it gives a slighly better service life for the battery.
Same problem here, send my SGS to samsung and problema solved new display and display circuit its a know issue with some SGS's

[Q] USB Failing?

hello all,
Has anyone experienced this? Is the USB port failing or bad?
I plug my phone into AC charger. Most often the light goes on and it begins charging. Sometimes it stops charging immediately. Sometimes it will charge for a little while then stop charging. Mostly it will charge until I unlock it again then it will stop charging. I find that once it stops charging there is no one way to get it back. Sometimes its unplugging and replugging, sometimes its just waiting until it kicks back in.
I have replaced the AC charger, changed the plug im using and changed the power strip.
Weird thing is I have not noticed this with USB charging through the PC (however that charging is slower than my rate of use, so I just get less decrease).
Has anyone seen this? Is my USB port shot? Time to get a new phone?
thanks
P.S. - Used to be Rooted MIUI, now I am back to stock FRG83 w/ stock Recovery, Kernel & Radio....this has happened since I was Rooted for the past two weeks.
Any unusual heat, when you're charging?
No. And this is a new thing that started when I started using MIUI. But has not left even after a full wipe and PASSIMG install.

AC charger recognised as USB

I'm under the impression that when the phone thinks its being charged by USB only draws 500ma which is barely enough to run the phone let alone actually charge it.
When the phone registers as AC charger it draws whatever it wants 1000ma or higher.
So heres the dillema; around half the time I plug into AC the phone thinks its USB and charges slowly, sometimes I need to replug up to 10 times to get AC charging done.
This is using the stock charger with a non stock cable, but a 12v car charger I got with the phone has the same issue.
I don't think its kernel related, and I'm on temaseks latest cm7 kang
Anyone experienced the same issue? Dont know if it happens on stock cm7, haven't had a chance to Test.
Thx
Sent from my Optimus 2X using Tapatalk
It's a hw problem, mate. You can verify it by flashing stock rom, and see what happens. If it still has the issue, you have to send it back for repair
I haven't yet tested with stock rom, sorry thats next on the cards but I can't think of any way to actually do that, USB data isn't working and I can't use airdroid because there's no wireless here.
So here's the deal..
It started intermittant, didn't take too long to get it to register AC. Today it finally crapped itself, over 50 connections from the LG official charger and ALL recognized as USB
So here's where the cool part comes in.
I live in Australia and I bought it off an eBay seller in Hong Kong, is LG warranty international or must I go through the eBay process?
I'll test a stock ROM as soon as I can, and hopefully delete this post if it all works out but yes anyone with knowledge on any of the things i've brought up would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Charging issues ( Cannot connect it to PC, It says USB when I plug it into a wall )

So I'm having issues.
As of right now I don't really know what the problem is.
My phone will not connect to my PC anymore. It doesn't say "Connected as a media device" or anything.
I can't connect it to my PC with Odin in download mode either
My phone will not charge anymore (Using Ampere, it charges at about 220mA. It'll go all the way down to 10mA and for 4 seconds or so it'll be at a high mA like 470mA)
It is not my charging brick (I've used Three and I tested them on my other phones, the bricks work fine)
It is not my charging cable (I've used several, and again, I've tested with my other devices and it works flawlessly)
It is not my battery, I have 4 and I've switched between them all
It isn't my PC (I reinstalled all the drivers, and it worked with my Note 3 immediately)
I've tried pushing the cable down while plugged in, and up. It doesn't do anything.
My ROM that I'm running: Maximum OvrDriVE, it is a Note 5 port. Android 5.1.1, with xposed.
My kernel is Emotion r23. I'm on DOK2 baseband.
I've reflashed this ROM, and PacRom. Same issues.
I've flashed different kernels. Same issue.
Right now I'm going to try to go back to a different ROM that I was using that I know for a fact works fine.
(Tried it, it was Rapture 8.1, android 5.1.1, kernel: Emotion Kernel 5.1.1 r21. Nothing changed. Fast charging enabled, still said was being charged via USB when it was plugged into the wall. )
A physical inspection of my USB port on my phone, it looks fine.
I cleaned it too. Still, same issues.
So this only leads me to believe its a physical problem.
Can any of you guys help me out? Because I'm still not sure exactly what the problem is, and I need help
Its your phone, I had the same issue. Warrantied it through tmobile. Exact same problem. It is frustrating for sure.

Damn. Well, i thought so. I'm just going to replace the Micro-USB port then. That's less than $50 vs a new phone which is about $230
I don't have warranty. I bought it off amazon and it's been perfect up until now. I'm sure I caused the problem and 'll be careful not to do it again.
The scary thing is that I'm not 100% sure that it's the MicroUSB port. It can't really be anything else but I just don't want to buy this and then it turn out to be something else. I guess I'll have to try though.
So, update: Replaced USB Port.
Broke LCD Screen.
*sobbing in a corner*
Oh and it appears as if my USB Port doesn't work still (Same issue. It does work to a point but as of fast charging I dont know but when I turn it on and unlock it my comptuer doesnt recognize it)
