Odin trouble... newer Captivate user - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having trouble flashing back to JF6 after a failed JH7 OTA update.
I can't flash back to stock firmware after following a lot of the directions posted around the forum. Odin One Click is all bank when I click start and I immediately get "All threads completed 0/0" and nothing happens. I've tried several different orders of operations in regards to putting into downloading mode and connecting to the PC, etc.
Also, Odin3 does the same thing after selecting the PIT file and firmware from samfirmwares. I get the same message and nothing happens.
Is there a more specific guide someone can point me to or share some insight? Thanks in advance.

How are you using odin?
The process is the same for either ODIN one-click or ODIN3
Your phone MUST be in download mode.
You will get a black screen with a yellow triangle, saying "DOWNLOAD"
The process to get into download (works for me) is by powering off the phone.. odin must already be turned on in your computer. <<IF you are using win7, run it as admin... right-click then "Run as Administrator">>
With the phone powered off, press and hold both volume buttons, then plug in the USB cable to the phone. The cable must already be plugged in to the computer.
Next, start ODIN and wait for it to finish.
This should be a foolproof method.

I am having the same issue...
I followed the exact directions on the thread title '[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY 'and I get into "Download mode" but nothing happens. I click start on Odin (the one downloaded from that thread) and it *instantly* says <OSM> All threads complete. (succeed 0 / failed 0).
What am I doing wrong?
Samsung Captivate running 2.1 rooted with "the beast". I bricked it last night trying to get OTA gps "fix" notice to stop bugging me.
Any tips? Thanks!

What OS are you running on your computer? Is it win7? If it is, make sure you run ODIN as administrator. Also, is ODIN on prior to connecting phone to computer?
Try following these steps:
1. Plug in USB cable to computer
2. Turn on ODIN (run as administrator)
3. Turn off phone (not connected to anything)
4. Hold down both volume buttons on phone
5. Connect USB cable to phone while doing STEP4
6. Click start in ODIN
This should work. If you are using ODIN3 instead of one-click, then make sure to set .PIT and PDA files properly, and to click re-partition if you are trying to unbrick your phone

Thank you....
I'm using Win 7 64-bit.
I've tried on both ways, prior and after, just to see if either worked.
The version of Odin is Odin3excution v1.00 downloaded from the aforementioned thread. (yes execution is misspelled on the actual program).
I am running it as administrator using the right click, run as function.
I can't link anything because I'm a new user (BAH! ) but it says Odin3 One-Click Downloader on the top in black.
ALL the boxes are blank. Every thing is blank...thank you!

I did this and I do get into Download mode immediately, Odin3 One-Click Downloader just says <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0) instantly.
I'm guessing I need a different version of Odin? FWIW, the name of the actual file is I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0

I'm having the same issue. I'm on WinXP, SP2 (old computer, I know.) I'm normally a Mac user, this is the only PC I have.
I'm using the same Odin One Click version Drew stated, with all boxes blank. Perhaps a drivers issue?

look up the odin one-click thread and DL the appropriate drivers and try again

As soon as you get into download mode and connected odin should recognize your phone - is odin seeing your phone?

No, windows is a POS. I've downloaded so many different drivers and each time I get an error saying it failed. I've literally tried every Captivate 64 bit win 7 driver out there, I downloaded KIES and tried that too.
I'm *really* close to dumping windows and android and just going full Apple. I am so sick of this crap and I've always hated Apple products (almost to the point of being extreme) but...if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I've spent the better part of 2 days trying to get this to work and the main issue, from what I'm slowly finding out, is windows wont recognize the phone and keeps dumping it before it gets connected.
It's just really too much at this point. I can go buy *shudder* an iMac, an iPhone *double shudder* and I'll be up and running in 15 minutes.
F8ck this noise.

Try this link for 64bit windows drivers.
Before you install, go to control panel, and delete all previous drivers.
Reboot your computer once before re-installing the drivers above.
http://http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
I'm pretty sure you won't need to install .net framework for Odin to work.
But if after drivers it still doesn't work, try installing .net framework 4.0 as well. You will need that installed to root anyways.

Nope, ODIN does not recognize my phone. I've tried it a few more times using the correct sequence and got nothing. Even reinstalled the drivers and rebooted the PC (without my phone connected).

Issue has been resolved. I tried it on a newer system running WinXP and got flashed back to stock with no problem... although the OTA update failed again.... but I've got the one-click version of that too.
Thanks for everyone's help!

Odin stuck at file analysis

I've tried just about everything I could find on Google, but Odin refuses to go past "file analysis". I'm trying to flash JH2
Here's everything I've tried
1) Change USB port
2) Administrator mode and XP SP3 compatibility (i'm on w7 x64)
3) Re-partition checked/unchecked
4) Rebooted phone
5) rebooted computer
6) removed sim card and sd
What am I missing?
It's almost always the fact that you didn't have Odin up and running with all the info in ahead of time before you plug the phone in to the USB port.
Do all the Odin stuff first, then set the phone up for the download.
Agreed.
First if you are able to use a program like Droid Explorer then you are fine driver wise so Open Odin first then Press and Hold Volume up and down and while doing that plug the USB Cable into the phone and that should turn on the phone into downloading mode.
Yes, make sure you have odin open first. Then you can go into download mode and start. Easiest way I have to do it is this:
-Open odin
-plug phone into usb with USB debugging enabled
-open command prompt and get to the android-sdk-windows
-adb reboot download
That should work perfectly. Takes all the guess work of trying to get it into the download mode.

I just created an account on XDA to tell you how INCREDIBLY grateful I am to you, because you just singlehandedly saved my phone. Thank you. Times a million.
I've jig-fixed my captivate into download mode and odin recognizes it. Even after plugging it in and after the .pit and .tar are qued, it still gets stuck on "file analysis.."
Worked for me too but...
All I had to do was
Close Odin3
Unplug my phone & pull the battery
Reopen Odin3
Then hold the volume up/down buttons while plugging in the usb cord
and then clicked start when it recognized my device.
I appreciate your help, you cleared my confusion!
Thanks!

Are you running ODIN in admin? Did you connect your phone to a rear usb port? Have you tried a different cable?
I've never seen Odin require administrative permissions. Installation of drivers, yes, but Odin and Heimdall do not require admininstrative permissions.
On my win 7 it wont ever work without admin.
I second that. But some people say its needed. I never had to.

HELP!

Hey guys I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I just really need some help...
I just recently flashed my galaxy to JP6 and installed voodoo and everything was running fine. I then wanted to root my phone and tried Chainfires solution from here on this forum. It bricked my phone and I had to flash back to JM8.
I am now running JM8 but when I go to flash JP6 it says fail and wont let me?
I also tried flashing JMP and my phone screen went green halfway through and stopped flashing.
Any ideas why I cant flash to froyo anymore?
Is it because I still have voodoo installed?
If so how do I delete it? I've tried following th instructions from curios google page but I couldn't figure it out.
Any info on this would be greately appreiciated!
Thanks
Why post here?
Don't like Q&A subforum?
No, its not related to voodoo.
I think you need to reflash JM8 again with 513 pit and repart enabled. After that flash JPM. (I believe no-repartition, 513pit loaded, but not entirely sure)
I'm sorry, I'm only new here.
I've tried re flashing to JM8 and then trying to go to both JP6 and JM8 but both say fail at odin.
The error reads: "Can't open the serial (COM) port"
Does anyone know what that means?
Well if you EXACTLY follow the steps:
Leave USB disconnected, phone off.
Open odin, select options/files;
Start SGS in download mode;
Connect cable NOW.
Start flashing..
.. and still got this error... No, u just shouldnt get one. It might be ur pc configuration, but cant really tell now.

In download mode there's a "Samsung Android USB modem" driver that should be active. This is the COM port that Odin uses to talk to the phone. Look in the Device Manager and see if it's there. If it's not there, unplug the phone from USB, reboot your PC, then plug the phone in download mode into a different USB socket.
If the driver is there then some other software on the PC may be grabbing its COM port, especially software for other mobile phones like Motorola or Sony-Ericsson. Make sure anything like that is uninstalled.

Need Odin3 1 click/stuck on boot screen

So I flashed my phone to Phoenix and was going wonderfully. Flew into St. Louis from Oklahoma and the phone froze up. It's now stuck on the AT&T boot screen. Occassionally after doing a battery pull and turning it on, the Phoenix boot screen will come up and I've gotten it to the lock/unlock screen but is unresponsive to touch.
Occassionally it even has what almost looks like colorful static on the screen. So now I'm in a completely different state without my home laptop for a week with the Odin3 1 click and am unable to find a download link for it.
Help would be appreciated. I was hoping to get the phone into recovery to try and flash back to stock or reflash Phoenix but it just stays stuck on the AT&T boot screen now.
remove battery, put battery back in, hold up+down vol buttons, plug in usb.
you'll be at download mode, then use odin.

Do you have an Odin download link? The Odin link on the site isn't good anymore and google isn't helping
here's an alternative link I've used:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
I appreciate the help so far and the Odin link. I managed to get Odin downloaded. I managed to get my phone in download mode. However, Odin is not registering that there is any phone. Normally I'd see a COM but nothing is showing up.
I started by running Odin.
Then got my phone in download mode.
I can't get any farther.
Do you have the drivers installed on your PC ? I also read somewhere where you have to have the latest net frame work as well...If you do...you might have a bad usb cord...and here in St.Louis..there are a lot of AT&T stores you can get one..

Well, on the original thread that had the link for Odin has the 32/64 Samsung drivers. I downloaded the drivers zip file to the desktop of the laptop.
One thing I find strange is usually when I plug in the phone to my laptop with the USB cable, the option to view files, etc pops up. It is not on this laptop.

Did you install the drivers then ? Sometimes my wife's Samsung laptop does that..and not install anything going to the desktop..If everything is loaded correctly..you 2 drive pop up windows should open..
Also (I'm sure it is) make sure usb debugging is checked on your phone..
Sometimes the most simplest things keeps things from working correctly..
Phone unplugged..in normal mode..usb debugging checked..do not mount phone..

Odin is also finnicky about USB ports. If you are on a desktop machine, try using one in the back instead of the front, or if you have multiple sets, try using a different one. I've had Odin not recognize certain USB ports but recognize others before.
Finally, I suspect you already know this, but for sanity's sake make sure you start both the PC and phone up fresh after reboots, open Odin, then connect the phone. Connecting the phone first breaks Odin.

What OS are you running? Are you explicitly starting odin in administrator mode (right-click->run as administrator)?
Okay, so I switched USB ports and it suddenly recognized and it started to download drivers. But it was listed as a gadget Serial and no drivers found. Geez this would be so much easier if I was at home where the laptop is set up with everything instead of being several states away.
Okay, so apparently I do not have the correct drivers installed. I really appreciate all the help so far. At this point, should I just google Samsung Captivate drivers or does someone have a link handy?
I can't get to my debugging as the phone stays on teh AT&T boot screen. I did have it enabled before I left OKC though.
I've gotten teh Samsung modem software successfully installed.

I know. Flying from OKC to St. Louis and then from St. Louis to Baltimore with a several hour layover has me exhausted and not thinking clearly.
I did manage to reboot it and Phoenix came up. All drivers were showing ready except for ADB and then the phone shut down and ADB said phone was unplugged.
I feel like I'm making headway but just not there.
And why is it I'm staying in an expensive hotel and you still have to pay for net? Geez
I downloaded the 64bit drivers. Ran the exe file.
Extracted Odin and have run it as an administrator
Put the phone in download mode.
Odin is still not seeing anything.
NM....pop up box just said taht device driver software not successfully installed. I think I'm going to hit my head against the wall for a bit.

[Q] Odin freezes around the 20% mark.

I've recently got a hold of a JIG. My computer recognizes the phone fine. I downloaded ODIN 1.7, follow the steps however it always stops at:
>><ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
Do I just downgrade to a different ODIN or how do I go about doing this?
Thanks.
Update: I've tried several versions of ODIN now and all of them freeze at the same point. I've tried ODIN 1 click and it freezes in the very beginning.
Try a different usb port, one that is connected directly to the motherboard
That's the first thing I did and it did not work. I've tried several mobo usb ports, still the same freeze. I tried a USB HUB just for the hell of it and I still get the same error.
Could it just very well be my computer that ODIN does not like?
Is there some crucial step I'm not identifying with my phone? I did brick it because of the same issue I'm facing now; ODIN's freezing.
Perhaps try to use a Heimdall package instead of Odin?
If ur using Windows, Run Odin as Administrator.-- Right click should give u the option.
Reboot ur computer as well, that may help.

Quick update: I decided to use my laptop, and odin1click worked great the very first time I tried it. No hiccups whatsoever.
Also I launched ODIN as admin and it still gave me the freeze error unfortunately on my gaming computer.
Must be my computer
Update: Odin totally does not work on my DESKTOP PC. I've successfully flashed my phone on my laptop but Odin totally freezes upon starting up.
Now Odin completely stopped working on my Laptop. I've concluded the latest version is just crappy.
Update: Heimdall worked perfect, thank you for the recommendation.

Help required: Galaxy Tab

I've been searching XDA & Google for about 1 month but can't find a solution. I don't know why everywhere in some threads whenever somebody asks the same problem there's no reply to that question. So I decided to post this question here to try my luck...
Problem & History:
I tried to root my Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000R with DoonLord V_4, it couldn't root it but left the tab with touch problem then I tried to root it with famaroot various versions, I then again tried to root it with z4root V_1.3.0, all attempts were useless, I don't know which attempt of them, made my tab unable to connect to pc even in download mode.
When I set my tab to connect to Kies or Media it shows that it's connected but PC doesn't detect it. Please help...

Thanks for your reply but I have already gone through this post but as I mentioned problem is that PC doesn't detects it even when I put the Tab in DL mode. Is there any method to root it? So that I could use Mobile Odin to restock it.
It is an usb-driver problem and not rooting, I'm 99% sure of it. It's the PC that HAS to find the Tab first.
Hmmmm

I've tried on another PC and with another USB cable but in vain. Other Smartphones connect it without any problem.
Any smartphone or the P1000 are not the same. I have had on multiple occasions that even Samsung Kies did not recognise it and had to reinstall Kies. Same for the Samsung Mobile phones drivers. And don't forget to reboot your PC after installing drivers.
Keep on trying because it is still going into download mode and logic tells it should be accessible. Does the PC give a notification like driver not found or similar?
NO.

No. There's no activity in PC when I connect it. It neither shows new hardware found nor any other notification like unrecognized device etc.
BTW I have reinstalled Kies, updated it, uninstalled it, installed separate drivers for Samsung USB but no gain...
One last option, let the battery become completely empty (0% charge). Recharge and try again, it rescued my tab once after a bad flash.
That is to my knowledge the last resort.
Alas!

What version of windows are you on? Because windows 8 is a *****, Vista or 7 should work.
(Or GNU-Linux). And have you tried Heimdall already? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323527
Heimdall download https://code.google.com/p/heimdall-one-click/downloads/list
Get a stock ROM and how to use Heimdall (these are old instructions so there could be newer versions available).
-----------Heimdall install instructions ------------------
1. Download Heimdall.
2. Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) and install it. Download it here List All Devices.
5. From the USB Device list chose "Samsung USB Composite DEvice".
6. Press "Install Driver", click "Yes" to the prompt and if you receive
a message about being unable to verify the publisher of the driver
click "Install this driver software anyway".
7. Done. This only needs to be done once.
-----------How to use Heimdall-------------------------
1. Put your tab into download mode - Power off Tab, once powered down hold power and the volume down button at the same time. You will see a android digging.
2. Start Heimdall
3. Hook your tab up to your PC or MAC and you will see a progress bar. That must say Ready to get heimdall to work.
4. Find you Firmware and unzip it until you see the following files below.
(NOTE: when you first unzip your firmware it may unzip into a .tar file unzip the .tar file to get the files below.)
a. Zimage
b. FactoryFS.rfs
c. Param.lfs
d. Boot.bin
e. SBL.bin - not always included
f. cacher.rfs
g. dbdata
h. modem.bin - not always included
5. Place each of those files in their correct spot and hit start.
ONE BIG NOTE: if you use a PIT file do NOT select repartition. It might brick your tab as heimdall has a problem when selecting repartition w/ a pit file. It is ok to use the pit file just make sure repartition is unchecked.
(Use ODIN for repartition with pit)
Got it working...
Thanks buddy, I bought a half dozen of USB cables for the tab and got it working with one of them at last... I don't know but I thought it was the last way out to try different cables... And at last, I got it working after long...
Please let me know the correct way of rooting, as DoomLord v. 4 has already failed to root it. Please guide if possible... I have a Ragers (Canada) Tab. GT-P1000R
