Hello all,
The past day or so I have been attempting to install a fresh custom rom on my vzw tablet. I presently have a stock copy of DJ11 that is rooted installed.
When I put the device into download mode and connect to the computer, Heimdall (version 1.1.1) gives me the following error
Failed to access device. Error: -12
I have tried reinstalling the drivers, both off of the tablet and from the ZAdiag program included with Heimdall and the error persists. I have tried many different combinations of opening/closing heimdall/disconnecting and reconnecting the tablet while in download and out of download, and I have tried on two different PCs. Nothing seems to fix the problem.
I have seen another post on the forums about this particular issue, but the method of resolution that user was able to make work has not worked for me.
It seems to me that the tablet itself is to blame, like it is locking Heimdall out.
Basically at this point, any rom that requires use of Heimdall to install is not going to work. I do have CWM3 and the Verizon Bootstrapper installed, so if anyone has a link to a completely stock copy of the rom that comes in a zip, please link it as I would like to try that method of installing a new rom.
Thank you for any insight at all!!
Have you checked with odin to make sure the tablet is not connecting?
I had the same problem and pluged the device in another usb port, then hold power, volume down e home and after a while odin showed the yellow bar.
then disconnected it and put in another usb port, after that heimdall found it.
and to mention my tablet was dead, no screen no donwload mode, and not responding to button press. and still i was able to connect and ressurect it doing this.
Thanks for the good idea! When I connect it with Odin open, I get the yellow bar. I think that Heimdall is connecting as well, it just isn't being allowed to make any changes. Access denied is my suspicion. I'm not sure what would cause that, or how to correct it.

I am pleased to report that I was able to find a solution. With Odin running, I was getting a yellow bar indicating the device was connected. I ran Heimdall while Odin was still open...and voila, it worked without a hitch.
Thanks again for the assistance. Keep this one tucked away in your memory in case you ever experience something similar!
You can also update the USB drivers through Heimdall like the instructions say.... Might be a safer way than to have ODIN open too...
You just need to downgrade the usb drivers after using Heimdall to use ODIN again...

I had updated the drivers through Heimdall. Both in regular boot mode, and in download mode. Whatever caused the problem, it is seemingly fixed. I just hope it stays that way!
Hello xda users,
I need HELP !
I have a galaxy tab P1000
currently froyo 2.2
wanted to upgrade to GB
Tried the Odin way from another link on this site (MANUAL updation for galaxy tab(p1000) into 2.3.3 gingerbread ), it failed and the Tab got soft bricked,
somehow managed to unbrick it, now its back to its original fw, but it keeps restarting in a loop until i switchd the damn thing off completely
I have tried to go in download mode to flash but odin doesnt recognise it , tried differnt computers too, no use.
I have gone in recovery mode, hard reset, wipe cache , still when i switch it on, it goes in a reboot loop.
tried to use heimdall. cant get sucess as i might not understand how to use it properly
Please help.
Sincere thanks to you if you can help me get my tab up and running., if not in GB atleast back in froyo.
(PS- i im not worried about my data , and i have not backed up the rom etc before doing any of these)
Try to reinstall or install a usb driver from samsung
tried that before , didnt work
anyway now i managed to get it detected on ODIN and flashed it to GB

Yeah, happened to me too, nearly had a sh*t my pants when Odin didn't recognise my Tab.
I would recommend -
charge the Tab fully using wall adapter (4 hrs+)
plug it in with Odin open and using USB cable
don't expect Odin to recognise the Tab immediately
check back after 5 mins or so (I don't know, does Odin refresh?)
I was able to restore my Tab from the PC - ! - Marvin screen.
I don't want to go back there again though!
yea dude.. same here
i kept it on charge for a couple of hours and then tried.. bam it conencts..

My Galaxy tab also doesn't connect to usb after cache wiped humber os flash
Thanks in advance guys!..
Earlier I was using Cyanogen mode 10 Custom ROM but has few issues like recognize SD card.
later I flashed to Humber OS caused real problem.
It was clock work recovery installed but my tab tab boots stays on screen humber OS.
It goes to recovery mode, and also to some unknown recovery mode.
Either the way not recognized by computer. I tried all options like heimtal an Odin. No help.
Friends any help, would be highly appreciated.
BUMP
Any solution to this given the fact that usb drivers have been installed?
Are you sure it is recognised by the computer before trying Odin or Heimdall?
I seen this in a post:

4 Reasons Why Odin is Not Detecting Your Android Device:
Reason 1: No drivers installed for your phone
Most of the time Odin is not able to detect your phone, simply because you haven’t installed the drivers for your phone. Normally windows would automatically download the respective drivers for your phone from the internet and install it. But in case it isn’t able to do so, you need to download the drivers from your phone manufacturer’s website.
Reason 2: Inferior quality or damaged USB cable
Odin is very sensitive to low quality or damaged USB cables, which is a major reason why odin will detect your android phone in file transfer mode but fail to detect it in download mode. You might have a genuine USB cable that came with your Android phone but with time its quality will depreciate, which is why you might have to get a new USB cable.
Reason 3: Odin is corrupted
This happened once with a reader on my blog, we tried everything to solve his problem, but in the end using a different version of Odin worked out for him.
Reason 4: USB port is defective
Defective USB ports can also be a reason for Odin not detecting your Android phone. This was a problem faced by one of my readers and plugging the USB cable in another USB port worked out for him.

and I need install cwm recovery on a twrp recovery and just do that with this app:
ROM Manager
if you want do same job; you can download it from google play easily!
and install recovery,rom or restore backup with it.

reason 1: my phone is samsung and it's detected by ODIN, kies and I transfer files from and to my computer without problems. also tried reinstalling just in case but nothing, so I guess this is not the answer for my problem
reason 2: tried with original cable, but as I didn't use the tablet for a long time I also thought it could be the cable, so I asked a friend of mine if he could lend me one cable, but that didn't work. pity. :/
reason 3: tried 3 different versions of ODIN, and in every version my phone (mentioned above) is detected. shame. :S
reason 4: tried the 3 different USB ports in my laptop. two 2.0 USB ports and one 3.0 USB port, so again I doubt this is the reason of my problem.
extra reason: ~~~ maybe it's the OS version ~~~ // this laptop came with windows 8 preinstalled. nothing. then, I updated to win 8.1. again nothing. now I'm running windows 10 and the same, nothing is detected neither by ODIN nor the computer. also tried in 4 different computers running win xp, win 7 and other with win 8.1.
btw, thank you anyway for your apportation; this may help other people, but unfortunately, it's not my case, so can anybody else join me to think about a new reason and a way to solve it? thank you very much :good: :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
~~~~~~~~~~~~ EDIT ~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have continued researching and found a software. it didn't work for me, but maybe it works for other people.
-first, you have to make sure you have java installed on your computer.
-second, extract the oneclick.rar file on an easy-access directory.
-third, put your tab on download mode (while charging icon when tab is turned off, press power + volume down until a yellow triangle appears).
-fourth, click start unsoft-brick and let the magic begin! 8)
note: if a warning error pops up, trust the software and click on resolution center and follow the instructions of one of the three "alternative ways".
and yes i ran odin as admin still no go
Reinstall your drivers. After installing the Heimdall driver, your driver that you need for Odin is borked.
i have reinstalled the phone drivers many times. i eaven downloaded them from samsung and tried that that. when i plug my phone in the computer will say installing drivers then it says completed. i restarted computer right click odin run as admin but nothing shows up in the com box..
can i unplug the phones usb cable from the pc while it is in download mode? i do not want to brick the phone
also is there a way to get out of download mode with out flashing the rom
got it. i let kies mini install drivers for phone then once kies mini found the phone so to did odin
oh and just help someone else who may be having these issues. yes you can unplug the phone as long as its not already flashing a rom. never unplug if already in the middle of flashing or you will brick the phone. to get out of download mode if you are not in the middle of a flash. if you find yourself like me and have put the phone in download mode and odin or whatever you are using will not recognize it or maybe you forgot to check usb debugging then unplug phone from computer remove battery for a few seconds and the phone should boot normally. tahnks guys for all the help i really appreciate it
Are you using the cable that came with the phone?
Have you tried a different cable?
Do you have Debugging Mode turned on?
You might want to post in the S4 Active Q&A forum.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-active/help
If you connect your phone to the PC and then go to the computer's Device Manager, is it recognizing the phone correctly? Or are you getting the yellow exclamation point over the icon?
I use Heimdall when doing Odin tasks. It is an Open Source equivalent to Odin available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I'm not too familiar with Windows problems because I have been on Linux for the past 7 years. I have only used Windows in those years for updates to a Captivate that only worked through Kies, and rooting an Acer tablet with a Windows only tool.
I get nothing when I connect the phone to the PC in download mode, but I get full communication when not in download mode. I have never tried Hemidall
I have seen some suggestions to try a different USB port, I expect you already have.
Other thoughts:
What version of Odin are you using?
Have you tried Kies?
Is your phone stock or modified?
I have tried numerous computers, numerous cables, numerous USB ports, I have tried every version of Odin known to mankind, I have tried with kies, without kies, and my phone is completely stock, not modified whatsoever, this one has me stumped. I have used odin on no less than 1000 phones never have I had a phone not react to Odin. the phone reacts 100% of the time to anything but Odin, I am wondering if Samsung has released a security update that is preventing communication with Odin
UPDATE:
After trying 3 different computers (windows XP & windows 7 64 & 32 bit, with Kies installed and without Kies installed), 12 different USB Ports, and 10 different cables at my house to NO AVAIL, just for a goof went to a friends house to try his computer (Windows 7 64 bit with Kies 2.6 & 3 installed), put the phone in download mode, connected it to his computer, with a random cable, opened Odin, and BOOM it showed up right away. I DON'T GET IT !!! WTF !! I have used Odin on no less than 1000 phones on my home PC with NO Problems, I try to hook this phone up to 3 different computers at my house (2 laptops and a PC), and Odin WOULD NOT see this phone. I am Stumped!
Glad you got it to work. I hope you were able to accomplish what you needed while you were at your friends.
Yes, I was able to Root the device with Towelroot after reverting from 4.4.2 Build NH3 to 4.4.2 Build NE3, Now I just have to get this thing home to "Fix" the IMEI number. One must be rooted before being able to "Fix" the IMEI number. I wish Samsung would just cut the **** with these unnecessary updates.....
This is one for the books. Must have just been a finicky phone..... Didn't like my computers, cables, or something.
Odin and Heimdall both get stuck during the installation. Odin sits at file analysis, setup connection or initialization. Heamdall sits at shaking hands with Loke. After trying to use heimdall, odin won't recognize the phone.
First of all, Odin and Heimdall use different drivers. Meaning, once you install the Heimdall drivers on a USB port, you can only use Heimdall with that USB port. You would have to install it on the others individually, but you don't want to since you need to use a different port for Odin.
Once you've established which port is which, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351224
Well I figured out the drivers problem, so I can use either program, but still the same problem, that post doesn't really explain my problem. Both programs recognize my phone and I can start, but they just hang. I followed the directions in that post anyway, but still get the same issue. I've soft bricked before and used odin I believe 3 times and never had this issue.
Make sure you have a good cable and use a port directly on the motherboard.
After trying many different ports one of them finally worked.
Anyone have any experience with this and any ideas? Trying to flash latest N960U1 firmware from sammobile and following their directions exactly. I have the Samsung USB drivers installed, I'm using Odin v3.13.3, and I reboot into download mode and Odin always fails with after SetupConnection or gets stuck at Initialization. I tried rebooting my computer, rebooting the phone a few times, restarting Odin a few times, nothing seems to change. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Make sure you are using the original cable that came with phone. If you are and still having troubles then remove all you USB devices.
I built a new PC recently and couldn't flash which was driving me nuts. Turned out that once I removed the USB hub from PC flashing worked. No I was not attaching phone to hub but to a USB 2 port. The hub was a powered hub but I thought it was working fine without the added power supply but that caused issues with Odin. Put the hub back in place with power to it and now can flash too.
Drove me nuts. I even dug out an old laptop that had Windows 8 on it just so I could use Odin but figured out issue on new PC...
