Im not sure why this happens, Im no expert, but there a couple apps that I have on my phone that I couldnt install normally because it would say "application not installed" in the end. What I had to do was push them directly to my /system/app folder and they worked then. But I'm not even sure if you can do that with an unrooted phone. But I figured it was worth mentioning cause I think theres a thread on here that mentions sideloading and not needing root?

Can I like adb push and adb install on this legend while it's unrooted or not?
Please help

you're probably going to have to root it and install another rom, unless there is a market apk floating around there somewhere.
either way, i expect a root is necessary.

hey,
Same here, I just bought HTC Legend a few hours ago from Vodafone to use the "Market" but I didn't find it. I also grabbed the original Market package from the forum, it's called vending.apk, did you find a way to put it into /system/app ? As every time I try to do so it give me an error message "Cannot paste Vending.apk from clipboard, and when I just tried to install it from the sdcard it don't work correctly, so please let me know if you find a way to insert it into /system/app.
Thanks
Ahmad

Download astro file manager from market.
Download the universal 1-click root app from above and put on sdcard. Put it in the root directory, not in a folder. It makes it easier to find. Then open up astro and find the .apk you just put on sdcard and click on it and then click on install.
If that doesn't work run the 2.27.651.5 RUU from ftp://hero:[email protected]/HTC%20Sprint%20Hero%20MR%202.27.651.6.exe
and then go to unrevoked.com from your phone and download the app and run it.

Everything you want to know is in there or by doing a search in the CDMA Hero Forum
But, please do a search next time as everybody starts a new thread for the same thing, especially with this same question
Ive been reading around for about 2 weeks and so today I tried to root my hero. I ried frist to go the long way useing the android-sdk-windows route but it didnt work so I then went for the z4 root method as seen in a earlyer post. I installed the app. I clicked on root in my phone and it did its thing I guess? It didnt ask me to do a temp install or a perm install. It finally rebooted and all my apps were still on there from android market and it was running horribly slow so did a factory reset. I can see superuser app. I downloaded rom manager and every time I go to click install rom from sd card it says you must install clockworkmod recovery fist and so forth. I am just getting really lost in this hole process. All I wana do is get rid of the damn stock apps... make my hero run faster and if a rom is pretty much a custom background and stuff then install that. At this point I dont even know if the damn thing is rooted or not and I havent been able to find a clear answer on how to root ANYWHERE on any site that will work. It seems 2 different methods ive tried both have failed. If anyone can help that would be great.
I'm not a dev but i had a hard time my first time too. So did you look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674833. and have you tried to see if you can adb in cmd on your computer? If so and nothing happened and your phone in working like crap now then find the news 2.1 ruu use that then start over. I used this tread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291). Hope this helped and good luck!!
The lag u experienced is a known issue when u reboot simply run z4root again and it should fix it and clockworkmod recovery is the custom recovery u need to install in order to use a Rom and u flash it through Rom manager and if u just want to remove system apps try root explorer from the market its 4$ but well worth it

The laginess is normal after z4root...tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, install it (It takes a bit since it has to download it first). Note that if it doesnt do anything when u press it, uninstall it, reboot your phone and download it again from the Market, that was the only issue i had, everything else went by smoothly.
Just follow what I did on here
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875351) and feel free to keep asking questions, i am new to this also. Looking back, its a process that should take longer than 30 minutes.
I put the step by step of the process on the first post as an edit.
I just purchased my nexus one today from a lady that had it brand new in box she never used it etc. when i got it i turned it on with my sim in and it worked great was even able to update to 2.3.4, i got home and decided hey id like to load some custom roms. however ive never done this, i also have a galaxy s 4g ive been trying to figure out how to load custom roms on for the past 2 weeks and im just over whelmed with all of the information in most of these posts. half of it i dont seem to understand, just wondering is anyone out there able to walk me through via IM on gtalk or yahoo messenger on rooting my nexus one and running a custom rom on it? Just looking for someone thats not busy and has some time to spare, ive messaged a few people but have not received any responses. but let me know Thanks!
ive installed pdanet, i tried loading passion frg33 and renaming it and putting on my sd card to downgrade since i guess cant root 2.3.4. but it says old version. that was one of the many guides ive read that told me to do that so im not sure just stuck scratching my head i guess.
Ok well when you say "old version" I'm going to guess that it says "main version is older" which means that you got the new main version so you'll need to use a different passimg file http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1105&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-general-discussion%2F12112-nexus-one-oracle.html&v=1&libid=1308893507029&out=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F6bym3vg&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fsearch.php%3Fsearchid%3D243391&title=The%20Nexus%20One%20Oracle%20-%20Nexus%20One%2FNexus%20S%20Forum%20-%20Google%20Phone%20Forum&txt=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F6bym3vg
Now I know you said IM of some sort but I'll just try and drop it in this thread if you don't get it then I'll help you on gtalk of something.
Now what you need to do is rename the file above "passimg.zip" now if your on windows this will be "passimg" because on windows the extension is hidden.
After you do that you will be able to root with superoneclick all you'll need to do is set up the drivers download and extract this file http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1105&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-development-hacking%2F10940-simple-sdk-setup-manual-root-guide-windows.html&v=1&libid=1308894048581&out=http%3A%2F%2Fdb.tt%2F10De9hz&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-development-hacking%2F&title=Simple%20SDK%20setup%20and%20manual%20root%20guide%20(Windows)%20-%20Nexus%20One%2FNexus%20S%20Forum%20-%20Google%20Phone%20Forum&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fdb.tt%2F10De9hz (credit for this goes to danger-rat) boot the phone into fastboot (hold trackball while powering up) and connect to the computer via usb, computer should ask for drivers select manual and point it to the "usd-drivers" folder from the file you just extracted.
Now all you have left to do is run superoneclick from the tools directory of the file you extracted.
thanks man imma try that right now ill let you know asap how it goes.
so it went to 2.2.1 i attempted to root using super one click but got no love. ran an older version that i used to root my galaxy s 4g and tried to do rageagainst the cage like i did with that one for my galaxy s 4g and it rooted it. do you think your able to message me on gtalk? my id is [email protected]
fastboot oem unlock
Flash new recovery.
Then flash superuser apk.
It's not that hard, and there are plenty of tutorials that show you how to do this, including the wiki.
Search. Read.
Read the "Root" section in Wiki. Look at my signature.
Ok well like he said in his first post he read some of the info and doesn't understand most of it, so I took the liberty of helping him he is now rooted and running cm7.0.3 with dt installed and everything.
Just throwing that in there so you guys know.
Good for you Dude! xD
Right firstly appologise to the admin for posting earlier in the wrong thread, but gratitude for you patience and direction to getting me to the point where I currently am. which is.... Ive followed the tuts from getting my phone from the exclamationion/pc symbol, re-installed the correct firmware and followed the rooting tut. I am on 2.3.6 android version S5830NEKT2 baseband [email protected]#1 kernel version gingerbread build no:. my question is (and believe me I have searched all evening through the forums to try to gain the knowledge myself and leave the busy guys doing what they do best behind the scenes) I cant seem to unlock all the ****e apps that come pre-installed with the phone... all i want to do is free up phone memory, and maybe install a stable sci-fi fancy looking rom/SHELL. however when i try to uninstall/view or any thing via CWM/AppMaster/installmanager/ESfileexplorer I keep getting the same message about my phone "MUST BE ROOTED" first. I did get the message at the end of rooting via the tuts and was told to thank the guy... which I did (and still do) can anyone tell me where I went wrong? I am at present thinking that maybe installing a custom ROM (currently looking at cryogen latest) would resolve my hassles am I correct?
I am extremely gratefull for you chaps on XDA for getting me this far and hope I dont come across any other way. I would be content with at least having my phone working thanks to you guys but, just cant shake the feeling I am a midges **** off from sorting the root problem can anyone help me....
ps... had a few beers so am off to bed to sleep on it for now... I have a shed load of kids and a moaning wife with a list of jobs todo over the weekend,so I will get back to this during nxt week sometime. Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated...
FRANKLY MY PHONE IS NEARLY AS OLD AS ME.. AND IM SURPRISED THE SUPPORT IS STILL OUT THERE
You won't be able to install custom rom if you are not rooted and have cwm(clockworkmod) installed on your phone...
And i suggest u to use root explorer for exploring your system and/or deleting some system apps...
