[Q] Disable cell radio - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's up everyone.
I just got the G2 (nice) and so my 3 year old is getting his first smart phone. Issue is, I don't want him to actually have call capabilities... so in a nutshell I need to disable only the cell radio on my G1 but want to leave WiFi and BT on.
I've seen several posts on this subject but generally the answer is to set up one of the power management apps or yank the SIM card (already done.) I want to make 100% sure he doesn't end up accidentally calling 911 though and it seems to me the most thorough way to ensure he doesn't is to cut the radio altogether.
I just downgraded from CM6 back to 1.6 (DRC83) but will root/reinstall if needed.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

What if you remove Dialer.apk? That would eliminate a possibility of calling anywhere
Let us know if it works, I've been dying to do that to my old G1 but never get around to actually doing it.

ATT 8925 - Won't see 3G

Hello All,
Been reading this forum for quite a while, 1st time posting. This community has helped me improve my life immeasurably in the past couple years.
I got an HTC Tilt a couple days ago. Unfortunately it's not able to be returned or warrantied. When I first turned the device on it saw the 3G network (or at least displayed the icon; I never had the chance to connect). I navigated to my sd card and went to delete Fieldtest.exe, which I had placed there for ease of use from my previous 8525 (I do some network testing for my job). I forgot and tapped it rather than holding down the stylus and opened the program; the 3G icon disappeared and went to E and I haven't been able to get it back. I've tried clearing the memory and have completely reflashed the device using the HTC retail ROM. Also tried kaisertweaks to enable HSDPA and the bandselect tool.
This is really bizarre. I don't think that Fieldtest.exe could have damaged just the 3G portion of the chipset.. but I'm running out of ideas. I've searched through this forum (finding wonderful nuggets of information as usual - can't wait to try Digitaltigre's method for using the Kaiser, or maybe old 8525, as DiNovo Mini) and others to try to find others with a similar experience and I've done the obvious (reflashing the radio I thought for sure would do it). Besides this the device works great - EDGE connects and is usable, voice calling works, tethering works, etc.
Any ideas you folks can come up with would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Shoehopper
ROM: 1.62.502.0
ROM date: 01/17/08
Radio version: 1.27.14.09
Protocol version: 22.45.88.07H
And I'm in a very strong 3G area (-65 to -70 dBm typically)
did u try changing your rom or doing a clear storage?
I tried both. The ROM I reflashed was the same version as the ROM that was already on it however.
try a different one
are you sure your area is 3G enabled? or at least have decent enough 3g coverage.
try this one addon it's called band select. it adds a tab to your phone settings where it lets you pick auto, regular gsm (G,E), or 3G. You can then force it to be on 3G only. The problem is, if this doesnt work it may mean what you thought earlier that either your 3G chip is messed up or you just not in a decent coverage area for 3G.
i cant find it on my pc, if you do a quick search you may unveil it. hope that helps
using 3g off/on in comm manager works for me or if i wanna get serious i use bandswitch or comm manager pro www.commmgrpro.com

Why is this? Even a secondhand Tilt will be less than 1 year old, and covered by AT&T's warranty.
I tried using BandSwitch, when I pick UMTS it constantly searches for signal (... under the antenna icon and x on the connection icon). Selecting Auto reverts to E.
I am certain of being in UMTS area (Redmond, WA HQ building of certain large wireless organization.. which is also why I cannot warranty or exchange he device).
Thanks,
shoehopper
errr nm i did some homework. Thought i had an answer.
eeeekkkkkkk
weird. I have some bugs depending where i am if the signals are real strong, i sometimes cant seem to leave my wifi on and stream info over 3g AND use my bluetooth. Are you running anything else at ALL. ? in the case i mentioned, i sometimes have to turn off my wifi to get my bluetooth to work.
Maybe some weird bug w/ something else your running?

Found on the side of the road?
fell out of the truck?
Stolen?
It was company provided, which means I'm not out anything personally, but it does have a $ value nonetheless. Being company provided but outside the retail channel, it is not able to be warrantied or returned. Sheesh.. people assume the worst.
I am not running any fancy connections. Haven't even turned on the Wifi or Bluetooth. No programs (besides the aforementioned kaisertweaks, and now BandSelect). It's not that it doesn't connect; it doesn't even SEE that there is UMTS coverage available, only EDGE.
Thanks,
shoehopper
I'd try a warranty exchange anyways, if I were you. (Once you've determined if there is a hardware problem...) Supposedly the warranty follows the device, no matter what channel it takes to get to the current end user. Anyways, that's what I've heard, and it wouldn't hurt to try. Just call customer service and ask for the warranty department.

Main phone or not?

Just a question to all the Kaiser users out there.
Do you use the Kaiser with only Android installed as your main phone?
Those that do, have you had any "bad" experiences while using the phone that are NOT caused by network discrepancies (i.e.: dropped calls, bad signal, etc.)?
I ask because I do use mine as my main form of communication on a daily basis, and I had my first dropped call today due to a hard lock. This is after almost a year of use, on the same phone, in different parts of the country with only a couple of days of non-use for screen replacement (scratched/damaged touchscreen).
I know we're all hanging on to old technology for different reasons, wether it be cost, availability, or that certain "wow" factor that comes from completely changing something that was never meant to be changed. I have become fond of my Kaisers for obvious reasons, but if I cannot trust it when I need it I may need to move on.
Thoughts?
I use it as the main phone . I dont have any problems except the camera and the WiFi . Hope to get it rectified soon though :/

Man, you still didn't manage to get WiFi to work ?
Dude my kernel !!
and because of exams i cant get that repaired !!
IDK if your kernel is the issue or not because the radio rom also has a lot to do with some aspects of the hardware controls (phone, wifi, audio, camera, etc.).
Other than checking your wifi.ko file with root explorer or some other text viewer, the only option is to change your rom. I have had a 99% success rate with my Kaiser using only Scoots kernel with 25mb of cache, the 8/29/11 rom from sourceforge and LauncherPro plus (from my personal stash). I have the kernel setting the clock to 500MHz on start up and I usually end up underclocking to 480 for a week or so to check stability against the previous weeks settings.
My camera works, my wifi works, bluetooth works, tethering/hot spot works, but video doesn't (not like I'll EVER use this thing for videos)...

Hi!
I use it as my main phone. After the imap push deactivation i hadn't got any hard lock.
But i use gmail sync, and sometimes i got a screen of death. But it's very very rare (maybe one in a month). I think if i didn't use anything thats related to 3G network, this lock up wouldn't appear.
This is my work phone so it must be stable. I'm satisfied with it.

[Q] Completely Disable Radio

Hello all,
I have an old Samsung Captivate laying around that I have turned into a media center remote control. There is no SIM card in the device and there likely never will be in the future. I have loaded Slim ICS (gotta love ICS!) on it and it runs great, but what I would like to do is COMPLETELY disable the cellular radio. I have no need for it and I know that having the radio active, even if it is not connected to an AT&T network, is still draining battery slightly. I want to know if there is some modem out there that I can flash that will be able to shut the cellular radio off totally, or at least give me the option to turn it off. I know this may sound dumb, but please bear with me. I basically just want to eliminate unnecessary hardware. I would also like a way to physically disable GPS if possible, but that's another topic for another day.
Thanks in advance to anyone who even takes the time to read this thread
-Steve
You can use airplane mode.
Or can't you just delete the modem?
Sent from my ICS Samsung Captivate
Here is a ROM that was the same idea.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093696
A guy on the last page says he just uses TiBu to freeze all the MMS and Phone stuff in Sliim ICS.
Just deleting modem will probably disable the wifi. That rom listed above had the basic idea. You could just use airplane mode and have working wifi.

[Q] Some n00b droid 3 questions

Hello fellow droid people.
Ok here is my question/questions. I apologize in advance if some of these questions are redundant with others, but I am at work at the moment and my search functions are limited due to web lock downs.
So I know a bit about what I'm doing in terms of flashing and backing up with safe-strap (v3.05). Currently I'm running MiniMoto v1.6 on a 5.7.906.xt862 system version on the Verizon US network.
My first question is what are the benefits of swapping to the xt833 over the xt862, if there are any at all.
My second question is dealing with the 3g vs 1x connections. I usually get a 3g connection just fine, but soon as I switch to any heavy internet usage, steaming music, downloading/updating from the play store etc, it will drop down to a 1x connection and my data will slow down drastically I grandfathered into the unlimited data from Verizon so idk if its a cap thing or what.
My last question is that when I turn on the GPS it takes a drastically long time to find any satellites to be able to do navigation. I tired installing the GPS status app which seems to help a bit but still takes a long time to connect that first time after its been off for a while.
Lastly, not really a question I suppose, but I am looking for suggestions too on ROMS to run. My biggest issue, as I'm sure with most people, is batter life and looking to get the most out of it. I do run Juice Defender Pro and with the minimalistic approach of MiniMoto I do get a lot of battery life. I guess what Im looking for though is something that is VERY bare bones, no extra stuff at all, not even gappps, at least on a fresh install, and with the features to customize what I want to have on there, almost like a build your own capabilities. For example I notice most ROMS I've tried (Ive run CM9 a long time ago on an x2, Steel Droid, v3 i think, and now MiniMoto) and they all have things like the Flicker Authorization on it, I have no use for that personally. yes I know I can freeze it with Titanium Backup (which i have also) or rename the .apk file to like .apkb or something, but I am looking for something where its just not there, if its out there.
Thanks for making it though this wall of txt and look forward to participating on here after a long time lurking and using the forums for info
Another question that just popped into my head, if someone can point me in the direction of how to apply the build.prop things that get put out, Ive seen a lot of things about them, but never been able to find how to apply them it would be appreciated.

-Droid x2 - returned to get the Droid 3
-Droid 3 .906 x862 running MiniMoto
-Asus Transformer 300
1) The 883 radio/build.prop is used to unlock GSM in the USA. Totally unneeded and will disable your CDMA part of your radio from my experience unless you want to unlock for T-Mobile/AT&T.
2) The 3G/1X switching may be you needing to do a *228. But you can force 3G by *#*#4636#*#*, Phone Information, EVDO only. Note: You won't get inbound calls or texts, as those use 1X.
3) Minimoto is about as barebones as you can get. If you want more battery life play with the overclocking and keep it at 1 GHz but change governors and stuff. I get through the day just fine. What are you expecting? Maybe you have apps that you download that are killing it (like Words With Friends is notorious for me).
Thanks for your response MrObvious
As to the 3g/1x thing. Ya i don't want to force 3g that way as i do still need to receive calls and such. I have tried the *288 a few times and its doesn't help at all, I'm thinking its just a bad location in my office as that seems to be where I have the most issues.
For the battery thing. Its not that I see a big drain on it, far from it when I know I'm going to need to be maximizing it I can just use Juice Defender to cut the pushes and radios that aren't needed to a minimum and I can easily get a full day plus of standby. I was just looking for a way to maximize what I did have already.
It is two two eight not 288.

before you add the gapps from above, might want to upgrade to 1.7, he just put a new version out a couple of days ago with some fixes and more removal of things. and it requires a full flash, not just an update.

Turn off Cellular

I just upgraded to the One M8 and due to my phone being pretty beat up I am not going to be re-selling it. I am toying with the idea of letting my 6yr old have it solely for playing games etc. Is there a way to turn off the cell radios so that he can't turn them back on? Maybe a rom that breaks the cell or something? Any help would be appreciated. If this has already been answered i attempted to search and my skills have failed to probue an answer.
