I'm trying to root my nexus one via super one click root and I keep getting "waiting for device". I'm running froyo 2.2.1

Don't bother. I had same problem. Go to modaco and use Paul's superboot. Works like a charm

I had lots of problems with that too. Download the PDAnet desktop client to your computer, this will install the USB drivers needed. They could probably be installed other ways but that took of the waiting for device issue for me.

Use universalandroot or z4 works great

Are you blind? UniversalAndroot does not work after 2.2
And anyways, SuperOneClick works great if your drivers are installed correctly...

Cool...I'm on Win7x64.
Settings>Applications>Development>Turn on USB Debugging
was a must for me to get this working with WinXP and the Galaxy Fascinate. The PDAnet applicaiton was crucial in getting my PC to recognize the driver. Thanks for the tips all.

I had the same problem and posted my solution in the main SOC thread. Here's what I did:
I used SOC 1.5.1. I had Debugging enabled and turned the phone off. I opened SOC and clicked 'Root.' When the prompt said 'Waiting for Device,' I turned the phone on. SOC did it's thing, and it properly remounted the phone. Everything is good now. I hope this works for you!!!
i have a cliq xt and superoneclick keeps ending with read only, can anyone help?

I'll go ahead and post the solution I found when it was stuck at "waiting for device" when trying to root mine. I had not installed the drivers on my PC for my Motorola A855. As soon as I got the drivers installed, it rooted quickly and easily! I hope that helps someone else searching. There are a ton of "waiting for device" complaints in certain threads, and rarely is it recommended to make sure the drivers are installed!
superoneclickv1.5.5
Used today to root stock D1-running 2.2.1 FRG83D. Downloaded PdaNet then ran root. Took like three times turning debugging off and on but finally completed. Thanks
Yeah downloaded z4root then bought easyroot neither worked. Gonna try super one today and see what happens.

what was the process you guys went through?
I installed the drivers for the phone
Turned USB Debugging OFF
Clicked Root
When it says: Waiting for Device, Turn USB Debugging ON
ran RATC
but then it just locks up and doesn't do anything. I went to turn off USB again and then it just loops.
Any ideas?
I just did it exactly how short fuse says to and it worked great. First time actually.

Thanks a lot. Its working for me. My set is Samsung GT I5801 (Upgraded to froyo for GT I5800 and used Superoneclick).
Just an information for other users that I needed one manual restart after applying Superoneclick to get the root access.
i got nexus one.. and as doon as i recieved , it downloaded the update 2.2.1 and installed.
after that i realised that was teh worst thing to be done.
as i cant get it to root....
WITHOUT PC:
i dont think that it is possible for 2.2.1
i tried universal androot, no success.
WITH PC:
i am not getting adb to detect nexus.
after installing adb and then typing adb devices, it shows a serial no. and then device offline..
what this means is it not accessible?
i m in big problem, coz i cant get it to root....
any other method anyone knows how to root it without pc??
please help me..
and i guess teh 2.3.3 update is out for nexus one, then why my nexus one at 2.2.1 says latest update installed??

Thats fine. Once you begin rooting it should start the adb service and find your device. Just follow the instructions.

I would recommend superoneclick by CLShortfuse for the actual rooting. Works great, and you can enable non market apps with the same program. One note, in the top right of the box that opens, you will have to choose either "psneuter" or "rage...cage". I think most people choose the rage option, but psneuter is chosen by default.

1) restart computer
2) uninstall drivers you have now for the phone. Download the new version (1.8)
3) Try again, and good luck.
Final thought, did you enable usb debugging?

Root OF /sdcard, it means the main directory ... Not in any folders.
So I put it on the internal sd(no a folder) then boot in to recovery and just re-install packages. Done

Are you on 2.2? If so then no, its not digitally signed for 3e recovery ... Look up in TRusselo's signature he has a link for getting passed that ... If on 2.1 you are good.
On 2.1

New method found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19390207#post19390207
If you run this and it doesn't root you try wiping data from Setting>privacy and wipe the internal storage as well. I did that and it worked for me. Granted I didn't try this method without wiping my internal. If nothing else it cleans it up for you.

Ok, so whatever changes you made ... it seems to work better in a virtual windows environment
Before it would get stuck at "daemon started succesfully"
now it goes through to "Installing Root Tools..."
but then I get a string of error messeages
either "device offline" or "device not found"
then "cleaning up" ... device not found
then "rebooting" ...device not found
then it freezes
when I unplug my device or toggle debugging mode it continues to say "root complete"
.... so close.
So If I'm rooted on Z4? then I still need to unroot and upgrade to Z6 for this to work?
Thanks a lot man for such this easy one-click-root tool.

Ok, so figured i need a quick reply
I used this toolkit, unlocked bootloader fine, but when i go to root, it gets stuck on 'Waiting for your device to finish booting back up...' on the PC and 'Booting Downloaded image' on my nexus
Do i have to manually reboot?
Is it safe to stop the process now?
Thanks

Wugfresh's toolkit works fine, and is a perfectly good choice for those new to Android who don't want to take the chance they'll mistype something in the command line.
This happened to me using the toolkit as well, I think the problem lies with the USB drivers, which can get confused or lose sync. Just power off your Nexus and try the procedure again from the start. Make sure you plug it into one of the USB ports on the back of your motherboard rather than going through a hub.

Now that Asus has posted official USB drivers you may want to uninstall the ones provided by the toolkit and use those instead.
I found this toolkit great, try using a manual root. Theres a guide in dev section

Thanks. The drivers really screwed me on Windows 8 because they weren't signed and requires hacking Windows to accept them.

Try this first
Try downloading supersu or superuser from the market, along with an app whih requires root permissions, such as titanium backup. After installing supersu, try running titanium backup, hopefully it will give you the prompt to grant permissions, and then you wont have to reroot.
