what else I need for my phone is restored? and I have the drivers for my galaxy to win 7 of 64 bits! ODIN gets stuck in SBL.BIN .... I have that file? I have it wrong? or because there is not progressing? what else I need to restore?

fix the captivate stuck with phone--!---comp. icon
Default get the samsung captivate back to download mode
I have similar problem like that. When i use Odin3 one click flash the ROM. It stuck in the middle of flash. I take off the usb cable out ,try to reboot the phone. Oop .. the screen show the sign of the phone--- yellow triangle with exclamation sign in the middle---computer icon. Can do nothing with it, because the computer now can not connect with the phone.
In my case, I take the USB off the phone but still connect with the computer. Hold the volume button + power until the phone flash in black screen .This moment happen very quick ,it will go back to the unconnected sign again. When the screen turn black just release power button but still press volume button (otherwise it not working) hook the USB back in your phone right on that moment. The Phone go back to download mode. If not work try couple time ,important is timing right on the moment the flash to black screen .
Now ,you can use the odin3 flash the ROM again. It works for me ,and i try again same situation couple times. it really works.
hopefully, this will help for who got the same problem.
Moved to Q&A.

Firstly, may I apologise, I know this has been covered, I've trawled the internet for hours but just can't seem to get an answer.
I recently updated my UK, unlocked Galaxy S to Froyo via the registry hack, all was fine (ish). Because Froyo had been delayed in the UK and wasn't as great when it was running on my phone I thought it would be safer to revert back to 2.1 and wait until the official UK release came out (I know some will ask me why I did this, I just felt that Froyo was held back for a reason and I couldnt get an answer as to if I could update to the UK version if I already had the Scandinavian one). So I did the reg hack again and was offered 2.1. Everything seemed to go smoothly until the phone rebooted after downloading from Kies. Now the phone's animation starts then the flashing S symbol displays for an extended time. After that, the screen goes black. If I touch the two touchscreen buttons they stay on but do not go off. If I hold the power button the phone turns itself off and when the phone is powered off and I plug it into my PC with a USB, the battery charging sign comes on.
The phone was rooted and I did have the OCLF on but uninstalled that and un-rooted before changing the firmware so it was back to stock.
Before I get 20 people telling me to put the phone in download/recovery mode I must tell you that I can't. My phone has never been able to do it. I've tried every single way and button order suggested. I'm not the only one who's phone won't do it either so it's not just me. The only way I ever saw recovery mode on my phone was when I used the one click root on the PC.
I'm at a total loss. Debugging was turned off because Kies won't let you do anything with it turned on and so ADB recovery is out also.
Please help if you can.
Many thanks,
Ryan
Boot to download mode, do a repartition with Odin and 512 pit flash, remove battery and boot again to download mode and then do a odin firmware flash to which ever firmware you want.
thanks intratech but I can't boot the phone into recovery or download mode (sorry should have stated that). Believe me, I have tried every combination. I did a lot of research and discovered that there are quite a few people for whom that feature was disabled.
if the 3 button combo is not working on your phone, you should not do these risky stuff actually

thanks Noobproof. I remember coming across that thread last night. Although I consider myself ok with software, soldering and slicing just isn't my forte. I haven't got a clue about soldering, etc. I've just come back from the Carphone Warehouse (Samsung suggested I go there as they are the service centres listed on the Samsung UK website). The engineer had the phone for half hour and said that the "board was faulty". Haven't got a clue what he meant by that, unless he meant the internal SD which a few people have had go on them. Anywho, he told me to ring Samsung and send it in for a repair. I did that and need to send my phone special delivery to a company called regenersis in Scotland.
I knew rooting and flashing custom roms was a risk, that's why I never touched Odin, etc. I used Kies to upgrade to Froyo and Kies to downgrade back to Eclair. You would think that sticking to official Samsung software would be safe. I must admit, when it was going well I loved my Galaxy but more and more I'm starting to wish I'd opted for the Iphone. It just seems that there have been so many glitches and bugs, I mean, why should there ever be a need for lag fix in the first place? I often found myself keeping my fingers crossed when downloading simple apps as that was usually touch and go!
Feeling a bit deflated now. Was hoping some clever boffin had designed a software solution that would recognise the phone and force it into download/recovery mode.
Ah well, thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.
Best wishes,
Ryan
You know i was very happy when i for the phone for the first time and while i was doing a research (i live in turkey and there is no stock android market here) i came along this forum. And i have learned that i havent got the 3 button combo. I downloaded the 3 button fix abd took the phone to samsung centre.
They told me that they cannot flash it and i made a huge fight then they accepted and i have my 3 buttons. Never give up your phone. I dont think the internal sd is faulty it is just corruppted if you can access the recovery menu you could fix it. Any way you have to find a service centre that has an anyway jig box other a jtag box otherwise they will have to replace the motherboard. Good luck

I'll tell you the whole story, to get your best understanding of my problem, so please read and help me if you can!
So i've had quite a few problems while trying to modify some stuff on my Android Samsung Galaxy S I9000M from Bell.
At first what I did was root my phone. Secondly I installed Darky's 5.6 Gingerbread edition, but like a dumbass I didn't understand how to install, so I dragged and dropped through the windows explorer the contents from the .zip.
Ever since I've done this, i've had non stop problems.
I've installed Odin 3.0 and the samsung drivers for my Windows 7 64bit computer, and have had the phone recognized by the Odin software when it's in recovery mode, as well as when using it as USB storage. I have never had the phone be recognized by Samsung Kies.
So after I screwed up the installation of Darky's 5.6 my phone started to act all screwed, problems like a ton of force closes, and a few missing apps. This isn't even the worst of it.
My phone started after a while to load up normally, and once I unlocked the device from it's home screen, it would immediately restart, and do it's fancy google color thing for a minute, and then load it's home screen. It would then do this automatically until I took the battery out.
One day after being fed up from hearing my dad yell at me after I just got the phone, I hooked it up to Odin got it to be recognized by my computer, and then tried to load on a new firmware. Nothing worked. There was no message saying it worked, no progress bar was moving, and nothing in the text area where it tells you what its doing, was moving from it's original state of recognizing the device.
I pulled out the device in frustration and turned it on. TADA! Something in there seemed to make it revive and actually work as a phone again. So I made sure it was charged all the time and tried to refrain from restarting the device in fear it would happen.
Well it had restarted, and things were still working fine, no big problems, nothing that wasn't fixed by a restart. Then suddenly I kept getting a lot of force closes on my SMS apps, or Phone app, as well as pretty much anything that was running on my phone started to force close, so I reset my phone.
Bam. Everything has hit the fan now.
My phone turned on and all I had was an Applications button in my single menu window. No phone, no sms, no settings or anything. When i clicked it, it would force close. On my phones first window, it would show "YouTube", "Calculator" and 3 other apps, which I never used.
Ever since then my phone has been a brick to me, with no connectivity to Odin, and no random working resets.
I've tried almost everything I've read here, and my biggest problem is that it's not connecting to Odin properly.
So please, what can I do to fix my phone without having to go pay to get it fixed. Bell said they would charge me $35 to even send it out and then charge me on top of that to fix it.
so no one has any idea what i'm doing wrong? or has experienced similar problems?
Try to reinstall the drivers in kies.
If that don't work do download
Them from android development site.
It should work.
Try the phone in all mode you can to get the drivers to install right.
Then you can try to fix it with kies or odin.
**DamianGTO Steam kernel. 349MB Ram. 256HZ. ext2. js3 base**
Another approach
I too cannot get odin or kies (or usb mass storage) recognized on the PC. I tried for a long time and gave up.
Are you rooted or can you access the root dir? If not can you access the external SD card or market so that you can root?
Do you have clockwork mod or similar?
I can only base my experience never using odin or a pc...
If you can get into recovery mode and start using (if you do not have it already)clockworks mod (and/or steam recovery - which I highly recommend as it can access the removable sd card which is useful to load stuff on to when things go sideways see why in my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929020 ).
Then you can flash whatever you want from the root directory or with steam from the external SD car (root dir there) no odin or pc required (directly).
Then I'd start with stock or at least a custom rom that is based on your carriers stock and go from there.

Hey!
I've had the EXACT same problem as you. did you try to put your phone into DOWNLOAD MODE (Close phone, then hold volume down, then home, then power) to see if it connects to odin? Also, before you do anything, make sure you turn on odin first and then select all the files you want. After thats done, then put your phone into download mode, then connect the phone to your computer thru the USB.
Hiho
Earlier this week I tried to install the new software through Kies. My phone went into downloading mode, stood there for approx. 14 hours. (i went to bed while it updated)
Woke up, and the screen was black. Turned it on, and I was met by a phone, a yellow exlamation point and a computer. I tried hooking it up to my computer, but it will not be detected by Odin, Heimdall, Kies nor adb. It decides to turn it self on and off whenever it damn pleases. And everytime it turns on, I get met by the same screen. I have no problem provoking that screen when I plug it into the recharger through the wall, but when I attempt to plug it into my computer, it simply refuses to connect. It shuts down and that's the way it stays.
I can hold the power button and the volume down button, but all I then meet is some yellow text. Cant remember what it said.
I've tried pretty much everything. All the guides and such.
I called samsung support, because there is an emergency recovery option inside Kies, but it requires a code. When I asked for the code, they refused to give it to me. I have to send it in. And While I explained what was wrong, the spokesperson told me it was my fault that this happened, and I will be billed for any service done to it.
Is there anything that could be done at all? or am I doomed?
If someone comes up with a solution, I'll be more than happy to pay a round of beer to the one that solves it.
I use the tab in the line of work I do, so it's pretty urgent. I'd rather pay 50USD for some of you to fix it, rather than pay 120USD an hour to some douchebag that wont give me the code.
Sorry for the long wall of text, but I've got 4 meetings tomorrow and I'd rather not write it all by hand.
Thanks alot for your time.
When you say a screen with yellow text.. what's the text say?
That screen is supposed to be download mode... I'd try plugging it in in that mode and see if the computer recognizes it. If the computer will recognize the tab in download mode you will be able to restore it with Heimdall or Odin.

The text says; POWER RESET or UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE
Just spent 30 minutes frantically getting into that "mode"
can mention that I had to put it into the wall recharger and then get it into that mode. Does not work when plugged into the computer.
I also have downloaded all addons through Kies, and some other program that followed a guide telling me to download certain drivers.
When you plug it in with this text does your computer recognize it?

No it does not, unfortunatly.
It basically just stands there with the text. Odin wont discover it, tried ADB and so on.
When the "phone-exclamation mark - computer" screen is on, and i hook it up to my computer, it may, after half an hour up to 2 hours just sit there doing nothing. Then it'll shut down or make the computer play that sound when you connect something. That's what I thought was my window to actually have it discovered by the computer, but the answer still remains the same.
The phone ----!---- computer screen is a decent sign... usually you can flash with Odin / Heimdall from this screen. I'd give it a shot, open up Odin see if it sees something plugged in. If it does, you have a chance.

Thats the downfall I guess.
While in that state, and the other yellow text stage, he will not respond at all. as if it does not exist.
I guess it's bricked forever then.
Cheers for all yer help.
Does anyone else know what to do? I tried flashing through heimdall while it was in the phone----!-----computer state, it uploaded alot of stuff and there actually came a blue bar on the screen. Heimdall didnt say anything when it was done tho.
Since your most recent attempts at flashing, has anything else happened differently with the device since the previous attempts? You mentioned a blue bar across the screen, has anything else happened that might offer clues as to a solution?
Sounds to me like you got a partial flash...

Nothing has happened. It stands still for a while then it shuts off and goes back to the same screen.
If it's a partial flash, what should I do to get outta it? Money inc for any sollution that gets me back to being able to use it again.
Have you tried manually putting it into download mode? (power and vol down)
What happens when you do? Same screen?

I get the exact same screen. And I cant start it unless its plugged to the recharger through the wall. It wont boot up when I plug it into my computer, unless im extremely lucky. And when it does take power from the USB via the computer, he stands there on the same screen.
So basically, the only thing that sometimes show up is the "phone----!-----computer" screen.
Ok so I may be able to help, I just had a similar situation with my sprint tab. I was at the phone ! pc graphic with nothing working. I tried heimdall and it didn't register the device when connected. So I went and got a windows 7 pc. Make sure you use a windows 7 pc because when you plug it in the drivers will automatically be installed. If nothing happens at first try a different USB port. I had to use the one on the right side of the HP laptop, the two one the left side didnt work. Once the drivers install I kept the tab plugged in. Opened up odin 3 and loaded up the stock rom CSC and PDA, no repartition checked, no PIT. Once I opened up odin and set everything up I got the magical COM with the yellow tint in the box at the top and I just hit start. It took like 5-10 min but I got a full flash and my tab is up and running. Please let me know if this helps. The key for me was using a windows 7 computer, I tried others like a macbook pro with heimdall and it didnt work. ODIN will work when others don't. I don't think your totally bricked because everything I have read says if your unit turns on and says anything your not bricked. Also make sure your battery doesnt die while your on the Phone ! PC graphic because then you will have to tear the tab down and manually recharge.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried every step that you did. Cross-checked all my USB ports, even added a few more ports inside the PC.
my SGT simply will not react. It shuts off and on whenever it damn pleases, and its still not discovered in Odin. I've tried every version. They simply wont flash. And some of them even crash when they attempt to flash.
Again thanks.
I find it hard to believe that you are in the boat you say you are. It isn't bricked, and in any reasonable form of download mode, a windows 7 computer will recognize it.
The process above should work for you... (did you really add another usb card to your computer?) Plug it into the wall overnight, insuring a full charge. (do you get any indicators that it is charging?) Whatever or however you can, get it into download mode and try the above procedure to the t.
You saying it turns on and off at will makes me think you may have fried the battery, in which case no dev here can write a thing to save your tab...
Secondly, this isn't constructive to your situation, but leaving your device connected to flashing software while you sleep is a pretty bonehead thing to do.

Kies is the official software for SGT as far as I know. Therefore I let it update and then went to bed, as I had a long day.
I did add another USB card into my computer.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Before this occured, It downloaded all the drivers needed. I could sync music videos etc etc. After the update the computer would not recognize it. Or well, sometimes, when I plug it in, I hear the familiar sound Windows plays when a device is connected, but Droidexplorer, Odin, Heimdall and ADB does not find it. I dont get a fancy color bar on Odin when I get that sound when I connect it.
I'm "recharging" it through the wall now, and all it does is flash the "phone----!----computer" screen. If I plug out the power, it turns black.
I also find it very odd that I'm this unlucky. If the step above doesnt work tomorrow after letting it recharge all night, I'm gonna smash it to pieces and let the seller have it back for free, and rather wait for HTC's tab.
Thanks for your time.
Flashing through download mode is a very risky thing to do no matter if Samsungs software does it, or Heimdall.
On that note it sounds like your kernel/recovery is just borked. You said it had some blue bars once in Heimdall correct? If so download the stock kernel for your Tab, plug that in to both the kernel and recovery slots, flash, hope to god it works, IF it does seem to take it... that will in theory bring the tab back completely.
What carrier is your tab?

If so download the stock kernel for your Tab, plug that in to both the kernel and recovery slots, flash, hope to god it works, IF it does seem to take it... that will in theory bring the tab back completely.
What carrier is your tab?

That's all I get from Odin when I try the method the guy above me used.
Can also add that the tab gets pretty warm after being on for a few minutes on the screen. When I let it cool down, the screen stays on a tab bit longer.
Ok, 1 silly question, before you used heimdall to flash, did you install usb driver using "zadig.exe"?
hi iv had a serious journey with my sgs i9000 here's how it goes:
i had it on 2.2 and then upgraded it officially to 2.3.3
not much else happened until i realised i wanted voodoo sound (apparently it was hyped to be awesome....its not that great) and neither is the ext4 file system 2.3.3 seems to be just as fast...dont know if it was a major problem on 2.2 but it aint really on 2.3.3
so i flashed voodoo on 2.3.3 from some website ... downloaded the app for the sound as the kernel didnt support that...
then i was using it and played around with the settings in clock work manager and i mounted and unmounted sd/card i dont think it made much difference but i thought i'd mention it ... the reason i did this is because when i tried to load a rom it wouldnt find all my sd card files beyond like the first 5 folders so i thought i'd give it a kick start....
then what happened is the phone just went off and i couldnt get it back on.... little did i know this was soft brick... i didnt know why....
i got the computer screen with the phone and exclamation mark.... i got into download mode a few times....
NOW .... i cant get it to turn on AT ALL using any combo buttons....
i think the nail in the coffin was flashing it with the "one-click odin" which was for the captivate but it said i could use it on the i9000 too.... which blatently screwed up the device....
anyway iv ordered a jig device... if this gets me into download mode ....what am i supposed to do...?
also is there anything i can do to get it into download mode now ? (bearing in mind iv done all the combo's ... some people say leave the battery out for a couple of minutes or half an hour....)
i think the bootloader is screwed up because it doesnt switch on....
even after i did a clean install of 2.3.3 with the pda phone and csc roms... it still just randomly switched off after 2/3 minutes of boot time....
what do i do now ?
samsung repair centre said they couldnt do anything and i'd have to send it back to samsung.... is it that bad?
Tried all the combos.... So you tried plugging in combo, then battery and also holding combo and then battery without cable in...
Have you read the pinned thread in general i think it is regarding, bricks?
Moving on
how did you do a clean install of 2.3.3 if you couldn't get DL mode??
Haven't read into the one click Odin so can't comment on that, but i think that was meant to be for softbricks...
anyway regarding the jig, just plug it in, and then wait a second or so, of not a minute (usually instant) and it should go into download mode. If it doesn't work again try some combos with the jig in...
If it is a hard brick i think you need to J-tag it, or yes take it to samsung in which case they may charge you for a repair, unless you say kies did it, and you didn't tell them everything you didi when you spoke to em.
Think thats everything lemme know if i missed out a question of yours or you want something better explained etc..
yeah i guess i was vague on the combo thing...
i've tried:
a) holding power, menu and volume down while sliding battery in (no usb cable in )
b) same as above with usb cable in
c)just menu and volume down buttons while i put battery in
d) both volume buttons and cable in
e)both volume buttons and battery in
.... the reason for d and e is because when i flashed it with the one click odin installer thing.. it restarted and showed a a t&t screen so i think its flashed the software with a samsung capacitive rom....so in theory i need to use those buttons ? not sure .... yet more questions....
i just hope this jig thing works ... btw do i have to pay sammy is my phone is under warranty?
how do i reflash the bootloader so it works properly? is that even the problem? do i need to do that? which pit file do i use ? some people say 512.... some say thats outdated and the new pit file is the thing to use .. ?

ok now iv got it to turn on quite regularly .... but it keeps cycling (bootlooping) the at&t logo screen .... cant get into download mode or recovery mode.... just keeps boot looping.... oh and when i plug in the usb cable it just turns off.... its like i cant start it up with a usb in the phone...
update: been reading around and if anyone has this problem.... it looks like you might be hard bricked and apparently this cant be resolved via jig device..... dammit ...i'll still try and update the post... peace
So you haven't tried the jig yet?? because you haven't got it yet right
I don't think the device is bricked at all. Bricked usually means you have no response from it, so no matter what combo, actions you take you get no reaction.. However you are getting a boot although there is something going wrong as it does so...
So yes you need a new bootloader, i think every rom that you flash through odin has one, but i guess it may not, its best to search this, but i have read a few posts that say you need to click on update bootloader (i would check into this, as if this is wrong it will definitely brick your device)
My suggestion is go back to the onclick odin thing as that should do it, im sure someone has done something similar.
Yh so to sum up, i would have high hopes for a restoration (but what so i know ) and yes flashing a new bootloader with rom i reckon would do the trick. I think a stock rom will do it. Click on the stock rom link below and type in a few search terms in that thread to see if you pick up anything otherwise do a slightly wider one of the forum.

jig arrived today! .... i plugged it in ..... NOTHING ..... (read on theres more to the story!!!)
so i put it in nothing happened...... i thought maybe the jig device was not working so i tried it in the i9100 (s2) .... WORKED ...!
im really stubborn so i needed to make mine work too..... i read in a review of the jig device that someone bought one and it hadnt worked .... i hadnt ruled that out
anyway all day i just kept trying to jump start it by putting in the wall charger in and out ... i usually get some reponse from that....nothing apart from a second of something like a loading circle......
anyway then i left it on charge for an hour ....maybe the battery was dead and then tried again ....
(btw i was getting no response at all at this stage, not even the at&t thing ...)
so it was pure black screening me.....
then i got home from work and thought let me exchange the battery and see what happens....
i changed the battery and put the jig device in ...... VOILA !!! download mode....
all is well so far i've flashed with 2.3.3 pda, phone and csc files and checked repartition... i haven't messed with the bootloader option
seems to be working ok....also gave it a restart too ... last time it got to this point but it didnt turn back on after a restart ....
in conclusion .... charge battery fully externally (putting the power in the phone in this state was not charging it)
then with a full battery put jig in .... if that doesnt work you phone might be seriously bricked.... bravo to whoever dreamt up the jig device
Glad to hear the great news!
Nice
Thanks for this useful info
Well guys I’ve been reading this forum front to back for over a week and was scared as hell to mess with my phone, but I really wanted ICS and some of the other nice software I’ve seen here.
Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9000DXJV9
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000DXJV9-CL216763
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DXJV9
I wanted to start simple with a CF root. I’ve read the flashing instruction so many times I thought I could do it in my sleep. So I backed everything up, turned the phone off and back on in DOWNLOAD, started Odin 1.82, loaded the CF root for JVQ (which is as close as I could find worked with my phone), then I attached the USB cable. The first time it started to flash, but it immediately hung while trying to start a connection. I unplugged and the phone was still fine. Started over and this time I saw the drivers install and thought now it should be OK.
Loaded the CF root JVQ in PDA, left everything as default (re-partition unchecked) and the other two checked. It flashed quickly and just as quickly it came up FAILED! Disconnected my phone and now I can’t even get DOWNLOAD. All I get is the silly icon of a phone with a caution triangle in the middle of a dashed line to an icon of a computer and even that won’t go away now. I remember seeing this symbol one time somewhere on this board, but don't remember where.
Looks like my worst fears have come true…a bricked phone on my first try. I never envisioned a situation where I could not get to DOWNLOAD mode and I do know where to buy a JIG, but I think it wouldn't help even in this case. Any help will certainly be appreciated.

JIG will most likely save your day, because you can have hardbricked phone only by messing with bootloaders AFAIK. And as CF-ROOT doesn't touch bootloaders, you'll be fine..just get jig and continue flashing
ps. I assume that you have tried taking battery off, inserting it while pressing 3-button combo etc. methods which you'll find around the forum..dunno even if they actually work..
Last time i got exactly the same situation when flashing CF root for 2.3.5 XXJVS..
Try connecting the phone to the comp with the phone, triangle, and comp icon on your phone screen, see if Odin detected your phone...
If yes, you can try flashing the whole stock firmware again, it should work...
i got into that situation twice and those steps always worked for me luckily.. (it works for me, saved my bricked phone)
wish you luck

Now your solution may be exactly what happened. I tried to connect using Kies, but my computer never even saw a device being plugged in so I never even thought to try Odin.
So I must apologize. I didn’t have the patience or perseverance to wait for an answer. I happen to live in a large city in a country that has a lot of clever tech people and phones are huge here in Thailand.
I was either going to buy a cheap phone so I could stay in basic contact until I worked through the problem with the help of this board or buy a new Galaxy S, instead I decided to see if someone here could actually get me back up and running in short order. Fortunately I found one shop that did. I watched him load up Odin, pick the PDA, PHONE, CSC and PIT files and re-partition, but I don’t know how he got a connection to Odin, because that’s where I was stuck.
I certainly could no longer get a connection via Kies or the drivers I had which were working just a short time ago. So the question I still have is how the heck did he get a connection to the phone?
Of course it would be too much to ask for him to load the original software so now Kies will not work with my phone, but that doesn’t bother me so much because I really don’t use it. He installed 2.3.2, Baseband XXJVE, Build Number XWJV1, which is a step backwards, but it works, although I’ve gotten one screen with tiny red letters in the top-left corner that said “panic kernel”, but after a reboot everything has been fine. BTW, the repair cost just under $15 USD.
Here's another question while I'm at it. What causes this to happen? I thought for sure I did everything I've read a 100 times on this board in the proper order.
Buy a Jig at eBay
Well, yes JIG will most likely save your day.
BUT
Try those meanwhile you wait for JIG:
1. take battery out and leave it few hours maybe and than try to boot download mode (increase times-hour, 2 hours, 4 hours,....)
2. press buttons for download mode (that phone and pc connected with dots and triangle will most likely appear), plug your phone to PC and try different USB ports and see if odin finds your phone, it happened to me once, however odin did
find my phone on that pic and i flashed (dunno why, maybe just luck)
3. take battery out, press buttons for download mode, and put battery back in, it can trigger download mode (found this by googleing sometime ago)
Or try google for more solutions, allthough I reccomend JIG
I know about the JIG and where to get one, but it ain't gonna happen soon and I'm sure this guy yesterday did not use one and he was confident he could restore the software and he did, so there is a way without the JIG.

This was a very useful reply and I thank you for it. Mail here is unreliable so I won't have a JIG until April when a friend brings one over, though Hong Kong sells most of them on eBay and some of them do deliver here free. I might try to get one from there.
Anyway, if this does happen again I have a couple of other things to try thanks to you.
I thought about Google (of course), I'm just not sure how to word the search with the phone+triangle+computer icon, but I'll give that a go also.
Kurre and asdsadas2010 also gave useful replies...Thanks.
I didn't think it would be that easy to find, but the first result in my search that popped up was this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751210 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/How_to_get_into_download_mode
Lots of variations on similar solutions. Really no need to add to this thread anymore.
Thanks
