Okay, before I ask this question, I did a search and found nothing. Might be down to my general retardedness.
I've been reading up a lot and I'm going to flash my phone to Froyo, 'cause Samsung are taking their time releasing the update. I rooted my phone earlier without problems and applied a battery icon mod.
Before I flash, do I need to restore the phone to factory settings? Do I lose all of my apps and contacts n' stuff? How do I back those up to make it easier to put them all back on after installing Froyo?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all, I hope you're not all tired of another noob posting up how-to questions. I come from a pretty solid background of writing modified firmware packages Motorola and Blackberry units, and writing custom themes for them both, so I am a bit familiar with the processes involved in rooting. Android is an entirely new beast though. I love it already, but I've also identified some things I'd love to be able to change. I've been reading everything I can in these forums for the past week, and I think I might be nearly ready to start diving into the root world. Yes, I've used the search a LOT Before I do root though, I wonder if you all might be able to add some insight into a few questions I haven't found the answers to thus far:
My rooting goals: remove the AT&T bloatware, possibly do a lag fix, and above all, do it the safest way possible. Baby steps first for me.
1) Rooting methods: Should I do the manual way, I found in that pdf guide on this site, the "GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models.zip" method, the mystery "update.zip" folder method, or the "one click root lag fix" method? Which is the safest and most tried and true for Stock 2.1 f/w, Baseband I897UCJH7? Also, what would be the best method to use if I wanted later to unroot?
2) Lag fixes: I've read that lag fixes can cause major problems when trying to undo them later on. Is there a lag fix that works well that is safer than others to load that can be removed easily? Are lag fixes even worth it?
3) Odin3: Am I correct in assuming that since I have JH7 that the most recent version of Odin is not capable of fully restoring my phone back to stock? I've been seeing posts from many people say that even using Odin, their phones get stuck during the revert process and cannot get back to stock. This is probably my biggest concern of all, in case I brick my phone. I've done that a LOT of times with Motorolas, and it's not a bit of fun trying to restore them.

The first piece of advice I have is make sure you have a cappi that you can get into recovery and download modes via the button combinations - if you can do this then you will be able to recover to a working configuration from just about any situation.
second, make sure you want to do this, because as you can get back to a "stock configuration" once you begin applying lag fixes or custom roms you will not likely be ever able to get back to your own stock configuration.
As for which rooting method - I have used and update zip and ryanza OCLF to root. Both of these methods are easy to unroot - at least until you begin applying lag fixes and/or custom roms.
If you are sure you want to move forward and root the very first thing you should do after rooting before you do any lag fixes or remove any bloat is get clockwork rom manager. Learn how to use rom manager and make a full nandroid backup of your phone before you do anything. If you have a good nandroid backup saved in a safe location then you can use this to get back as close as possible as you can to your own stock configuration later on.
Oden3 will get you back to a stock jf6 configuration. This will not be your stock configuration, but it is a working stock configuration.
Lag fixes do improve the lag in the file system some. However, before you play with any of them educate yourself as much as you can about the particular one you are going to try and use. I have applied both OCLF and voodoo and have been able to remove both of them. But if you don't follow the steps correctly you can have problems - after all with the lag fixes you are reformatting part or all of your data partition where the os is residing which is inherently risky. You can easily lose data and even soft brick your phone forcing you to use Oden3 to get back to a working state.
Lastly, I am running Cognition 2.2 beta 5 very successfully - and I do recommend it for anyone that has entered the rabbit hole of modifying this phone. And with my current config my phone is running so well that the lag fix is not needed for me anyway. My phone is running smooth and fast.
P.S. Just make sure you are not going to have any major regrets if things go wrong before you do anything at all, because any and all of these steps have some amount of risk associated with them. Make sure you are prepared for dealing with voiding your warranty and even though it is hard to brick this phone, it could still happen so be ready for that too should it happen.
i would agree, go with cognition 2.2. i only had my captivate for a day, and found it very easy to get it installed without any hassle.

A more pressing question: If I went to Cognition 2.2, would I be able to easily get the official release OTA and install it normally when/if it becomes available? Are there step-by-step guides out there for getting that release onto and off of the phone? I'd hate to get Cognition on there and find out that i couldn't easily get it back to a state where I could get the full deal on there. I've read some horror stories about just that lately...

If you are wanting to get OTA updates then I wouldn't even root your phone - while it is possible to still get OTA's after rooting, once you begin modding (lag fix, or custom rom) you oare increasing making your phone less and les compatible with any OTA available.
NOTE: I personally will not ever apply an OTA myself - but rather will wait for someone else to create a custom mod of any OTA feature I like - them donate that dev a few dollars and use their mod.

I'm brand new to this stuff, and I've searched the forums to the best of my abilities and I don't see a fix yet.
I just flashed the new Cognition ROM and used Titanium Backup to "restore all apps with data". During this process, it went through my apps one by one, and asked me if I wanted to install them or cancel and not install them. I picked and chose which apps I wanted to keep and which to discard. As an aside, the apps in question were things like games/puzzles for my kid to play with, and games and such that I had downloaded from the Market to try out but forgot to uninstall.
So, after everything was restored, I started to test stuff out, and everything works...except incoming calls. I get the "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. please try again. force close"
Is there any fix for this besides going back to stock and retrying the new ROM? If there is a solution to this a link to the thread would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what is the best way to go back to stock?

So I use ODIN to go back to completely stock and try the ROM again, but use the "restore missing apps with data" option?
You should click restore missing apps + data. That should fix it

Maybe I'm just picky or don't trust TiBu completely, but I always restore my apps individually. Never had a problem. I've been back and forth between Cognition and darkys ROMs and (of course) stock on my AT&T Cappy.
Yup restore back to stock... and if you had issues with doing a TiBu restore with "Apps and Data" I would recommend just using "Apps Only" option in TiBu.
BUT... I would test the ROM out before doing the restore to ensure it's not a ROM issue first.
If you do not wish to go back to stock, there were quite a few suggestions in the Cog 3.0x thread on this issue. A few people in that thread simply had a bad flash. One just needed to do a good solid reboot to fix it. Another suggestion was to clear the dalvik and cache using ClockWorkMod Recovery (red version). Lastly, lots of people FC'ing with the phone process were experiencing problems due to the ogg files in phone.apk being compressed when they should not be (reportedly) and was fixed by disabling the "Call Status Tone" in settings/call settings/all calls/call status tone. One of these could be your problem.
If you wish to just try again the simple way, it would probably be your best bet to Odin back to stock, do the master clear (it seems to be a topic of debate if this is the best thing to do, but it is mentioned in a few different tutorials), and flash again. Then TiBu to restore your apps+data (as mentioned... no system data, just app data) again.
If you wish to try to fix the problem, one place to start might be a fixed phone.apk in the Cog 3.0x thread in the Development section for Captivate. It is posted by Andrewk_77 somewhere between page 85 and 90, I think (sorry, I've been trying to keep up with the reading of that thread for days in order to head off any problems I may run into with Cog 3 and it's kinda blurring together). Otherwise you'll have to try to search out other solutions in that thread.

I know that they don't seem to be describing the exact same problem, but might be worth a shot.
I reflashed Cog 3.02, didn't use TiBu to restore anything, just set it up myself again. Phone works fine now.
Though I do have a question about flashing back to stock: would I just put the stock ROM (in this case Rogers 2.2) onto the SD, and flash it using CWM? Or do I need to use ODIN, in which case I would get the AT&T ROM? Thanks for helping a newbie out.
I have a Galaxy S which i rooted and installed a lagfix on. I think it was Ryans OCLF i used for the lagfix.
I want to update to the official Froyo available from T-mobile via kies but having lots of problems getting it to connect (as everyone does). I have backed up contacts etc. I havent bothered backing up apps as i just wrote down the settings i have in each one and will just reinstall them after the upgrade.
What im planning on doing was completely resetting the phone back to factory settings and wiping it altogether so i have a clean phone to do the upgrade.
The problems im expecting or want to know how to avoid is with the root and lagfix i have installed. Will doing a factory reset or other reset (hopefully somebody can tell me another way of resetting) get rid of the root and lagfix or do i need to do something manually before wiping the phone? I know of something about the lagfix creating partitions etc so would a factory reset cancel the lagfix or would it cause all sorts of problems?
How do i go about removing the lagfix and resetting to the standard software that came with the phone? Also i have apps that require root so if i unroot the phone will this cause problems when they try to start or will they just not work and not be an issue?
Im not running any custom roms just the original one that came on the phone.
Sorry for all the questions and a rather long first post but im hoping to do this soon as the phone is running like a bag of smelly brown stuff lol.
Disable the lagfix first and then wipe. Root will not go away but I dont think that would be problem.PS. If I would be you I would just use odin to upgrade, there is plenty of good guides including how to use odin
Undo lagfix before any firmware upgrade .Then factory reset then go to Kies .
Remove lagfix as per the instructions with whatever lagfix you used .
Unroot not a problem its only a user administrative rights fix giving you greater access .
Personally i undo anything i can before an upgrade .

Yes i would definitely undo everything before upgrading its just a question of how i do it.
I used Ryans OneClickLagFix app that was on the market at the time but now it has been altered because it allowed you to root and google didnt like this. I still have the original version i downloaded on the phone so is it just a case of clicking on "remove lagfix" and that will sort it?
Also if the root remains on the phone after i have wiped it, will this cause any problems when i put froyo on it? Is there not a different method or file for rooting froyo to the one i have used on 2.1?

Also click Remove Ext2 Tools, and the go into the Scheduler changer and return it to CFG and uncheck the tweak buttons, if you messed with any of that.
In which order should i do all of those?
Should i remove the ext2 tools and return cfg settings etc to default before i remove the lagfix or after?
So just a quick update.
Something went totally wrong the other night on its own. This is before i had even thought of upgrading that night. Was sitting on facebook happily playing away when it started force closing within a few seconds of opening. Tried to open the market to reinstall the facebook app and the market force closed in a few seconds. It did this with every app including the email and phone etc. Even the RyansOCLF would forceclose so i couldnt remove the lagfix or unroot etc. All my settings for apps and launcher pro settings had disappeared. Only a couple of icons i had set on the home screen of launcher pro remained but i couldnt use any of them. All my phone logs were there and so were my texts etc but everything else had reset. When i tried to reapply some of my settings and then restart the phone, when i had finished the restart the settings i had reapplyed had defaulted again. Disaster!!
The only thing i could do was run a factory reset from the options menu. I crossed my fingers hoping this wouldnt brick the phone and alas it worked perfectly. Sorted out kies and connected the phone and installed 2.2.1 android. The lagfix had been cleared by the factory reset. I keep wondering if this is why i had so many problems with it taking ages to start up before. Maybe because the lagfix never really worked properly it never fully rebuilt the file system so was removed easily? Although the benchmarks were coming up double the speed of the fastest device on the results so not too sure how it was performing so fast with a duff lagfix...who knows. Anyway got it all up and running and rooted and lagfixed using the voodoo fix. Stuck launcher pro on setup everything. Got the apps i previously purchased reinstalled and restored any apps i wanted from titanium backup. Works like a dream and alot better memory usage aswell.
Thanks for all the help guys but it seems although i didnt follow any of the instructions you all posted (not out of choice...just because the phone physically wouldnt let me) it seemed to get the upgrade done without any problems.

Just as the title said, I accidentally installed CWM before flashing my phone, and am now unable to launch into Recovery Mode. I know that there's a way to get it revert it to stock recovery, but as far as I've been able to tell, there's no way to do that without going into the Recovery menu in the first place. Does anybody have an idea what I can do?
My phone can still launch to the firmware (stock firmware, but am planning on installing Cyanogenmod 11), so for now I'm alright but considering the OTHER problems I'm having with the stock firmware, I'd really like a way to get back to my installation ASAP. If I can't, I'll get to my problems with the stock FW later...

If u remove & insert battery, & then try entering recovery mode(Home+Power keys)...u surely have accessed recovery by now

Which CWM version did you use? Are you running a Stock rom?
