[Q] Best Non-Market apps... - Captivate Themes and Apps

So when I first got the captivate I was disappointed that my buddy with the incredible could side-load apps and I could not... So what did I do? I rooted it and enabled side-loading... now that was over a month or more ago and I have yet to install one non-market app... What are you guys using for apps that are not on the market?

MiKandi, for the gay porn.
Seriously though, I don't think most people sideload non-market apps, or at least I haven't really found anything worthwhile outside of the market, especially since the captivate comes with Swype pre-installed. I've sideloaded some beta software that isn't found in the market, like firefox mobile, and some other stuff that disappeared from the market after my 2.2 upgrade (new york times mobile), but none of them are must-have apps. Most of the sideloading I do is just to test my own programs, since the sdk's simulator runs slow on my computer. It's nice to have the option though, even if you don't currently need it.
Also, if I remember right, some game companies don't sell their stuff on the market, like assassin's creed and whatnot. I'd imagine you'd have to be able to install non-market apps to install those.

I'm more likely to buy an app if I can try it first, but let's just ignore the grey area in favor of your simplistic, black and white worldview. Piracy bad!

err, your logic is entirely flawed just fyi. if you knew anything about the android market, you'd know you have up to 24 hours after purchasing an app to refund and uninstall it. so you saying "I search for apps so I can try them before I purchase them" is, at best, ridiculously misinformed.
do the right thing and buy the app, if it isn't to your liking, refund it. on any other platform, where this process doesn't exist, I'd give you a break. but android specifically has this setup to avoid exactly what you're saying you do.
edit: should add that the main benefit of enabling sideloading for me is restoring apps through titanium backup after reflashing my phone.

Please highlight the sentence where I said anything close to "I pirate apps." I'll wait...
Seriously, you're putting words in my mouth. But for the sake of argument, I'll add that sometimes 24 hours just isn't enough time to determine whether an expensive app like Doggcatcher (a $7 podcast app) is the best available option. I need time to see how it works in different situations, ie how well it streams while I'm at work vs my house, bluetooth vs line-out, how it reacts to different roms, etc. I was forced to take a gamble and buy the app without testing it in every situation I encounter.
If you read my actual statement rather than simply making up your own, you'd see that all I was saying is that there's a gray area. It's more complicated than piracy bad, riaa good.

Bluetooth Launch

Tunee music. But I think I saw in the market now. I used it for a couple songs then thought to myself "self this can't be legal" downloading almost any song you can think of to your phone for free... "self, maybe the record companies made tunee music so they can get richer off poor people that download music for free"
So I do NOT want to be like the lady that downloaded 24 songs and now has to pay something like 1.5 million dollars now. So bye bye it went. I dont have a spare 1.5 mill
But it is a cool app. I originally had to.sideload it. Got it from tuneemusic.net Again I think I saw it.in the market.now.
EDIT:Yep.it is the market now. Just searched for it but DIDNT download

When I was on WM6.1 I was using .lit files and Microsoft Reader. At least it remembered what page I am on.
Now I use WordPlayer app to read ePub format. www.Baen.com remembers what books you ever got and I can always re-download those in ePub format. WordPlayer will also "talk" to Calibre Library (Free & runs on your "big" computer). Calibre will convert any format eBook to any format. Calibre will also act as a Reader on your desktop. You will eventually move all eBooks into it.
I end up using WordPlayer setup with a black screen (less power) and white letters. Dim or brightning as needed.
Understand that by giving away the first books in a series (or older books) by their top Authors, Baen is like a Drug Dealer giving you a Free Taste!

Amazon App Store now working

Check out Amazon. They have an App store now. Supposed to have a free paid app every day. I got Angry Birds Rio just a minute ago...
A free paid app?
EDIT: OH, I see what you mean... cool
I love the amazon app store, now we will have access to all the paid apps with no hacks (assuming the developers of the apps make the move.)
Not available in my geographic location..... The wild, freezing tundra of the great white north. I suppose after today's seal hunt, and before I start today's grapple with that damn polar bear, I'll find some third party site to download the apk from.
I wonder why they are charging for regular angry birds and other free apps on it when you can get them for free on the google android market
I am more than pleased w/ the Amazon app store. Took me 5 mins to set it up first thing this am, and within 5 mins it recognized my G tab with no issues.
Works much better than the Android market place. No need to do Market fixes when they do updates.

That would be the "AD free" version sir
They also have the ad supported free one on the market as well
It'll be interesting to see how they're market handles multiple devices and frequency for updates.
Only negative I've seen so far, is that the apps seem to take quite a bit longer from amazon. Uninstalled AB and then downloaded and installed from android market, then downloaded and installed from amazon market, took 3 almost 4 times longer to download from amazon.
Angry Birds RIO
I also downloaded the Amazon app, and then at the top Angry Birds RIO showed for free download. Had some initial issues with my password, I could not get my regular Amazon password to work same as my mobile.. But all is well, and Angry Birds RIO plays great... I look forward to their future fee offerings, and I also found it works a lot better than Marketplace.

Anyone running Amazon Appstore on stock rom GTablet?
It works great on my VEGAN-tab but when I try to install it on my stock GTablet, I receive an error: "There was a temporary error logging in. Please try again in a few moments."
I tried again a few moments later over and over again all day, and still no luck. I couldn't even download the app properly...had to transfer via USB. Only to get this error message.
But in my VEGAN-tab, downloaded, installed and ran absolutely perfectly.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas why?

I noticed that as well. I am thinking (hoping) that it is due to the fact that it just launched and they are swamped a bit. Will know better after a couple weeks.
Still over all I like it. It seems to work pretty smooth on my ancient G1
I have stock rom and it works fine. A little slow like others have said but this is good for me without access to market apps. Nice to be set up already as an Amazon customer.

I used the same amazon account on all 3 of my devices and anything I purchased or was available for install on all 3 devices. So I guess you can install an app that you purchased on as many devices that you own without paying separately for each device, which is how it should be. You paid for the software and should be able to use it on any device you wish within reason. +1 for amazon! I hope they don't change this.
Tank Hero
For those that couldn't get tank hero on the upgraded market with Vegan you can now get it with the Amazon Market, gonna search for a few other things that were missing from the Android Market. Me Likey!!

Not sure what the problem was, but a factory reset seemed to clear it up.
I am definitely excited about the Amazon app store. It looks like a great alternative for tablets without Market access. But beware that one-click ordering...sometimes too easy is not a good thing!
It is the whole app and website that is slow. Every part of the process takes longer than Market. However, there are a number of things I can't find on the Market that I could at Amazon. Kudos overall.
Even if it stays slower I am liking it. It is not like I will install software every day. I found it nice that I could go to the app website make the purchases and then at my convenience install them on my device.
I don't have my GTab yet so I am really living in the slow lane with my venerable G1

Yes, I am as well.
After browsing around, I am willing to trade the speed for truly functional search. The ability to filter the listings alone makes it a winner over the Market.

Amazon AppStore.

I just wanted to say that the Amazon App Store is a really nice alternative to the Android Market. With honeycomb finally get to see new apps. Angry Birds Rio is really nice, and nows its free today for the ad free version.

Can someone explain to me the logic in having another place to get apps outside of the Google Market that benefits consumers? So I get Angry Birds Rio because it is exclusive however, if I remove the Amazon market app it stops working. Why? And all the other apps I checked are already available in the Google Market. So why do I need to use the Amazon Appstore other than exclusive content which in my opinion if fragmenting the available apps?

Different features in the actual marketplace; different payment processor (Amazon, which I use extensively, has all my payment information but I do not use Google Checkout); different prices and yes, a different selection. Amazon and other app stores can offer additional features to developers like the DRM you are complaining about which will lead to fragmentation that may or may not be a good thing (time will tell). Who knows, maybe there will be a prime-esque subscription service at some point. Best Buy may sell the same games as Gamestop, but I'm glad I have the choice to never shop at the latter.

I am all about choice but having multiple places to search is not a positive feature in my opinion. Will we have 10 other app stores pop up next week? Not very appealing in my opinion.

That is an issue that Google can resolve. You get 10 other companies providing an app store, how is that helping? You then have to do the same search 10 times.

I see your point. I agree I would prefer one place to get my apps. But right now when I just go browsing for apps amazon is alot easier.
This has to be one of the biggest blunders I have ever seen with Android yet. Most of the Amazon market is filled with apps that are already available in the Google Market. The only app I have seen so far that is not available is Angry Birds Rio. And if you do not install or have removed the Amazon appstore app, you cannot even run it. Does that sound like the same issue with DRM protected music?
And what allows Amazon to create their own app store? Is it easy for 20, 30, 100 others to start their own store with mostly the same apps with their own rules? This does not look good. Who wants to search 100 stores for apps to find what they are looking for and on top of that, have different rules. This has to be the most retarded thing I have ever seen since owning an Android device and is doomed for failure.
If you don't like it, don't use it. Let market forces determine things. If 10 app stores popped out tomorrow I guarantee most would not succeed. As it is there are several alternative app stores for android already, and they have not caused any problems. Competition is ALLWAYS a good thing, even for our beloved google. Same reason I am happy that apple is constantly pushing on android and vice-versa. Competition is the underlying rationale for using Android for me.

So on your PC, you would rather have one single source for all your software? You don't comparison shop, buy from different vendors, directly from developers? The app concept and having it all in one place is a convenience, thats it. Its like saying you should not open up a Target because your town already has a Wall-Mart or something...

This is not my PC. You go to Amazon store and you see the same apps available in the Google Market. You think the average consumer wants to search multiple markets for an app? I know I don't. And the same app works from Google market and not from another app store because their appstore app is not installed? You think this is a good user experience? I don't. Do not compare to PC experience because the Android tablet experience is based on competition from Apple iPad not from a PC experience. This will be a disaster in a year from now where iPad users can search one location for all their app needs and Android tablet users will need to search 100+ for theirs. There is no reason why these apps cannot be in one location.

haha i don't want to get a back and forth going here, but really, just don't use the amazon app store and all will be ok. not to overblow the analogy, but two supermarkets usually carry 99% of the same things, doesn't mean you should get rid of one or preclude new ones from opening up.
i realize that apple people have their walled garden with their false sense of security and limited options, but take music purchases as an example: i can either say, buy all my music from iTunes like most Apple people do, or i can do what i do, which is source it from eMusic, Amazon MP3, directly from the artists, etc, all of which i am able to do from both my galaxy s or my xoom, and all of which i am able to do for less money than if i just bought everything from iTunes. oh and since the artists usually get a better deal if i avoid the iTunes store i know more of my money is going directly to them. same thing applies to app stores. its not really all that complicated, i mean, how lazy have we gotten if we can't be bothered to look for things on more than one app store?
as far as the drm deal where apps won't work without amazon appstore, i am not crazy about it, and if that is the case, i would definitely think twice before buying anything from them. maybe some content providers will insist on using amazon's system, but if the terms are that restrictive i'll just take my money elsewhere.

Listen, I do not want back and forth either. I want to understand the reasoning behind having another place to get apps. If there is a restriction or process that does not work posting the same app to the Google market, what is it? Why is another market or appstore needed other than money to Amazon? I don't get it.
Why would developers choose to use the Amazon store over the Google Market? Can someone answer that please with specifics? Is this a takeover of the Google market?

The only reason i could think of would be different methods of payment. What forms of payments do they both use? Actually another reason could be the amazon one may also allow "banned" software, as the market is run by google.

Right now? I do not know as I am not familiar with the policies of them both. However, as we have seen with the Apple App Store there have been many rules which have upset developers over time. Some of those are directly tied to how much money a developer can make off their app. For example, if Google were to mandate something similar to Apple's new subscription model I imagine many developers would like an alternative.
From a user perspective, having competing promotions like Amazon's free paid-app every day is nice
I agree that it can be a hassle to look for things in different stores but it is for the best. Its the universal rule of conservation if you will. The Amazon Appstore with bring competition to Google forcing google to step up its game if does not want to loose customers. For example Amazon will have a free paid app per day, maybe that will move google to do the same or top that. Amazon will test each app first to make sure it is not malicious and even though it will never be perfect maybe that will move google to do something similar. Amazon has worked out deals with developers in regards to the checkout process which may lead some developers that before only sold their apps from their own website to put them in the appstore (Gameloft). Also this has led some developers to drop their prices at the Amazon Appstore.
I understand not everyone thinks this is for the best or that its too much of a hassle but when you think of things from a perspective of growth and innovation it seems to be good.
In regards to the DRM content it is one of those things that are just tough to deal with sure we can try to avoid everything that has DRM but that is why Netflix and Hulu have not been supported thus far.

Convert Units ? a great app to convert what is 5.8 in cmtall and or kg.. american uses different ways while australia uses kilos(kg) and centermetters tall (cmtall hights)
Discount elite ? a great app where you can see what is 5% off the mark price or 20 or so % discount. for example 100.00 book has 10% discounted. what will the price be to calculate that? well with the app will tell u.
Agingbooth ? a fun app where you turn your photo face into a older looking person with wringles around the face.
SoundHound? a good app where it will detect for you what that song is call. for example im listerning to a song i like. But i dont no the name of it. the app will listern to it live on the speaker and detect the name of that song.
IM+ ? an app where it contains yahoomessenger, MSN messenger so that i can log into one of them and stay intouch with my fellow friends.
Google Earth? Obviously we all know what this one is. So wp7 has it?
Hairstyles ? A Great app to style your hair either your male and female.. with hundreds of hairstyles to see how you would look like in real life with long and short and style hairstyles. Remember no cartoonist look hairstyles.
So does WP7 offer all of these apps too? or could it be under a similar name perhaps ? help me find out and let us know exactly the name so i can type it in the app store. All of these apps are what i enjoy in the apple store apps.
I would be so disapointed if wp7 doesnt even offer any of that. I wonder why.
By the way as i add more and more apps on my phone just where all the apps are.... it builds up alot and i have to scroll all the way down and down to find the app i want to use.... i wish this phone HTC HD7 would have them sorted in small icons just like iphone so i dont have to scroll one line all the way down to find it.
thanks love
best regards
@ SandraX2020
Looks like you already own a HD7 from two posts above. So why don't you check yourself if the listed Apps are available in the Market place.
I did not hear/see most of the apps you listed. But I'm sure MS will catch up soon enough. iPhone and Apple and the developers had 4 years to have the number of apps they have now in the market place.
Where as in less than 7 months, WP7 has over 17,000 apps. I'm sure in no time we would have all of them if not more. So, tight until then.

I can not simply believe enough how all of the apps names ive meantion obove this in this colon list and yet you say there is 15,000 apps on the qp7 and non of the apps ive meantion are not available or doesnt exsist on wp7 between the 15,000 apps thats available there.
These apps are on itunes and on android. I can not imagine more how wp7 doesnt have these apps at all. Sounds like wp7 15,000 apps are more useless apps and basic apps and nothing more then lots of apps design for other countrys. Most of the apps you find will be useless to use it in other countries....
I give you an example. you find lots of apps in relation to the the train metros... your not seriously going to download on of these if your living in a country nwith no train stations around your state. Then again all the 15,000 apps may as well be just useless apps. 80% from all i can see.
I just cant believe all the name apps ive meantion are not available. Considering there is 15,000 apps.
Then whats all this 15,000 apps? doesnt look like there is really 15,000 apps.
When i click SOCIAL i keep on scrolling it down and down and down i go.... and the further you go down and down as you scroll the page there is just 80% useless apps and not very interesting or no one using it to beging with.
But if you keep scrolling and look at all the scroll you did on the SOCIAL apps areas it sure doesnt look there isnt enough.. looks like there was only just 200 apps in there.. Yet interesting 15,000 apps on wp7 all of its content ? interesting.
Anyways WP7 marketplace should wake up and do something decent. It is lacking. I heard friends where i do go to california that wp7 is slowly dyeing from all they are concern about. And wont be popular until 3 years time.

You say there is 15,000 apps on wp7 ? And yet all of the 8 or 10 apps ive meantions are not available on wp7 ? well that is odd because you would think 15,000 apps would be value apps to beging with. And after all of the 10 apps ive meantion obove are available on itunes and android.
Then again im starting to notice and realise all of the most 15,000 apps available on wp7 marketplace is useless. Well not useless but what i meant was that most of them are not really design to help you with things because most of these apps are like for other countries or local other countries needs.. like for example india radio... or canadian radio or stuff for thier locals.
Surely in my state we dont really listern to indian channels or canadian channels or thier local tram timetable apps... well wp7 is like that really.
It is a shame because 15,000 and counting is just crab apps most of it.
I also notice as i browse quite alot.. that there isn';t much ratings on apps and most ratings are on the top list apps... but if you keep on browing down and down the apps page... no one really have rated anything on all apps. only just the most important stuff that are more value that is rated.
Again there is 1.6 million users around the world who just brought an HTC HD7 cellphone. And yet you would have thought 1.6 million users would half of them all would of rate lots of apps to beging with ?
Then i did some analys and notice that 80% of all these people in the 1.6 million users who now own a htc hd7 was that everyone was mainly downloading the GAME store and that everyone was more focus on the GAME section game then anything other then just games on the Xbox game area.
I am not a game person but i used to when i was in my 20s. Know days what i like it good intertainment and intersting apps.
Believe it or not i downloaded 3 apps and in just 3 days later ive deleted it because one of them was a social chat and no one is in it... the second app was find me on wp7 around the globe and notice in my state no one is using this app... So it is a pain killer till its dorm.
So WP7 been out aproximate 7 or so months now. And allready owns 15,000 apps and continuing.
Yet like i said in my experience of using the marketplace is that 80% of it all is crab apps because most of the apps are only more related to a specified country like singapore tram app... or the local tv guide in china.. But these things are useless in other countries. And most apps are like that.
I also notice 60% of the most apps ive encounterd and looked t are quite boring and theres nothing interesting or nice with its graphics... because most of it is just basic writen words and nothing. Its like reading a book with nothing to make it stand out.
So why is wp7 marketplace so bad ? I spoken to my old fellow friends in New orleans and they told me you shoudn't have gone with wp7 because wp7 is dying down.
Mainly wp7 phones are mainly design if you only care about just games
And that its not like what you think as in android or itunes
So to finish it up i say wp7 is crab and bad and nothing excitement out of it.
Know i am thinking of soon to buy a tablet 10.1 screen with built in android. However installing android on the htc hd7 will be not so good if you ever try to uninstall something importnantly.
Itys interesting how itunes and android has all the apps im more interesting. Yet wp7 there is upsolutely no apps that i like which seems strange. Only the app i own is the world radio live. But the rest is again useless. So why with 15,000 and counting apps on wp7 marketplace doesnt have the apps ive named as meantion obove ? which is odd.
I bet all the apps in there wp7 is crab. or at least 80% of it is useless and again apps cost alot on there too
What it is more interesting is the games that wp7 offers... just the games... nothing els.
Not everyone is into games. Think about it.

Sounds like a flaming fanboy to me... If you dont like WP7 the DONT BUY WP7... It is as simple as that...
Well, I have to agree... At the moment WP7 is simply not the best choice unless you are a gamer. Games are awesome under WP7 thanks to XBOX Live. With android you have a bunch of free useful apps as well as great paid apps and is a growing platform with a huge future in the smartphone & tablet market with Android 3. Now with iOS, you have a bunch of slave apps hanging around iTunes and a phone with no battery to swap and no SD slot. Just telling the truth, don't get me wrong. I have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS, an HTC HD7 chevron unlocked and a rooted HTC Inspire 4G with mike's 1986 Revolution ROM. So I have all 3 OS and in my opinion, Android is by far the best, Apple in 2nd place, and in a distant, very distant 3rd place is WP7. And again I have not one but 2 HD2 (both with custom roms) and was the owner of the HTC Tilt 1 & 2. So I am also a huge fan of windows mobile 6.x. etc... but reality is reality. And WP7 is at this precise moment still in pampers. Hope the mango update really delivers not some but many new features like multitasking as well as many others. (Hotspot, usb tethering) Flash should be priority one too, so at least they have something that iOS still don't have. Anyway, isn't this a post about new homebrew apps for WP7? LOL... take care everyone!

Soonr app

The market has a Soonr Workplace app, which allows collaboration of work. Has anyone tried it yet, and does it allow annotation of all kinds of files with the S Pen, which is what the Soonr app is supposed to do?
When i looked into it, it seams to be a trial software package, after 30 days its a months fee....ouch.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Hmm...thanks! Someone on the market commented that it's a virus or something.
Well, I'm hoping the Soonr app comes out soon as it's free! Or if there are some mods/apps that allow annotating of microsoft documents with the S Pen.
Its free because its a trial period, then you pay monthly.

i think no , the soonr app for the Galaxy note is called Soonr scribble and its "comming soon" according to samsung , they have videos of that app on youtube , but i just couldnt find it anywhere , guess we will have to wait.
on the other hand , u can annotate PDFs using ezpdf , i find it not that productive and quite annoying sometimes with ezpdf (due to small issues that require tweaking) , hope soonr scribble will be the best all in 1 annotation app for the GNote
Yes, it's quite cumbersome and altogether exasperating trying to annotate using EZPDF. It's great for just about everything except that!
You know what? I was poking around the S Choice app today when I saw Soonr Scribble listed for sale. There was a note to register online* for the free version (go to www.soonr.com/galaxynote) of the app, but when I did so, I received the message that I will be informed once the app is publicly released.
I hope it comes sooner rather than later, pun intended!
BTW, you need to click on the phone rather than the red register free trial icon on the top right corner. That's for Soonr Workplace I believe.
been a wild goose chase trying to get the soonr scribble. when i registered earlier, all i got was the other soonr software and was told that i would be able to get soonr scribble soon.
just a couple of days ago, i saw it on the samsung apps costing several dollars with a caveat that if i register at soonr, i would be able to download a free copy. but when i wrote in to soonr about the free copy, their response was that they do not know when samsung and market is gonna release it and it is beyond their control. Plus they did not address my concern about where I could download a copy, as samsung had said. What a confusion.
I don't mind paying for the app but just needed to get a trial version first lest it be a junk piece of software. With market at least there is a 15 min trial period but currently scribble is on samsung apps which does not have a trial period. right?
You're right. I don't mind paying as well but want to try it our first. Thanks for sharing your experience with us
Please everybody who have tried Soonr app, give their review or just opinion about the features of this application! I hope that it can annotate ppt and pptx files directly with S pen so that Galaxy Note can be used as a general tool for presentation.
Hi guys.
Soonr Scribble allows you to annotate in any major Microsoft Office format (.doc/x, .xls/x, .ppt/x) as well as .PDFs.
The app is free for a limited time. Signing up for a free 30 day trial account will include 5GB of storage and allow 2 seats and 2 guests. You can always upgrade storage and team-sizes to fit your needs.
We expect to full go live within a week or so and will keep everyone updated.
Thanks for the reply, Soonr! I can't wait! It's been announced on CES.
Hmm...I just chatted with Ryan on Soonr's website and he says it should be out end of the month. Yay!
Now it's been the end of the month, but still no news about Soonr Scribble for Galaxy Note. Why it takes too long time?
I don't know either. Smoothing out some bugs I suppose...
Hope they keep to their word. I've been checking S Choice and Samsung Apps twice a day for the past few days.
Soonr Scribble
I was just checking on the market to see if it showed up, IT DOES!!!!
But... not letting me download it yet, says its not compatible with any of my devices:
check out the link and let me know if you can download:
https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zb29ucnNjcmliYmxlIl0.
confirmed "No compatible device found"
Soonr Scribble Now available on Android Market, Get it while its Free!!!!
Once installed, you will need to create an account with them using an email address before you can use the app, have not used the app yet so cant comment on how good or bad it is.
Thanks, Hasc. I'm the OP and I downloaded the app this morning! It's available on the android market as well as via Samsung apps.
Before you can use the app, it will download a What is Soonr.ppt file (7.3MB). It took me a while to realise that (You'll also need to register for an account first.) So you do need to have your Wifi or 3G turned on. Be forewarned that if it's free Wifi that you're using, the downloading can take quite a while.
After you have scribbled on the file, you will also need Wifi or 3G to upload (=update) the file. I chose "Save for offline use in settings", and it updates the file once I turn on my Wifi.
I think the app works fairly well though I would have preferred a tutorial or a more helpful screen than what you see when you first start out. I'll also like to see an eraser instead of just an undo button, as I can't make changes after the file is updated. Scribble to text conversion will also be great, and I hope that's not a pipe dream!
Any thoughts about this app? I haven't used it much, frankly, so I would like to hear from others.
Had a quick play with it on the GNote (Scribble version) and it does work well and seem useful BUT I personally think the pricing is too high (unless you are guaranteed to use it frequently enough to justify it of course).
I might be interested if there was a "per GB" pay as you go model, but wouldn't be using it enough to justify EUR 9.99 a month minimum.
Uninstalled already!
so far i have *not* found it to be user friendly...i could not seem to get it to work by just playing around.
there seems to be a battery drain with the program too.
after one day, i uninstalled it. i was particularly disappointed as i was very much looking forward to the program.

Amazon Appstore app

I can't get the Amazon Appstore app to install. It gives me the message "Do you want to install this application? It will get access to:" then a list of areas and boxes for cancel or install. When I click install nothing happens. The cancel box works. (I did check the unknown sources in settings)
If it is being blocked by Google, that would suck.
I'm pretty shure its being blocked by Google.

Not true it's working for me. Go to Amazon& request a new link to be sent to your email.

Thats strange, i was able to do it on my N7. Maybe a reboot of some sort?
Works fine here. Go into Setting>Security and check Allow unknown sources. Go to Amazon web site and follow instructions to download and install. Did that to download an older version of a zombie killing game that works on N7.
Works fine for me. I use it every day to get the free "cr"app of the day.
Try rebooting it then re-installing.
If you're installing it from a previous backup from another device, it most likely won't work (not assuming you are, but just in case...) Like the others said, go to Amazon and get it directly and you should have no problem.
What worked for me was clicking the link for tablets. It says something like "no email or phone number, click here" and that downloaded the APK directly into my system download folder. From there it installed just fine. I had to do this to get it on my Google TV also. It seems to bypass some sort of test since the Google TV isn't officially compatible with it.
I just worked with an Amazon tech, got it to install using by going to this like in the browser on the N7.
http://www.amazon.com/app-email
Works fine now.
Mine installed fine. I used the APK from my phone. Got a bunch of the nicer FAOTD apps working perfectly too.

I find it incredible that everyone is giving Amazon a free pass for contributing to the Android Malware myth.
The fact you have to enable side loading on an Android phone to allow Amazon, means any other malware could also slip in. Using Amazon app store is a REALLY bad idea (plus the fact it's a barren wasteland compared to Google Play, and most of the apps are really out of date versions).
Surely the lure of free versions of old apps is not that strong that you want to open your phone up to allsorts of Android malware nasties?

Bugger the Apps they get games too. Of course only if you're from a certain country.
Majority of the free apps are a joke.
I usually check it every day and realize they're all trash (except maybe 2 apps so far) and then I uninstall it. For some reason I get struck with the idiotic idea that I may be missing out on some good free apps, so I stupidly install it again in hopes of some decent apps...... it never happens

That's what most people think. Once you discover what Amazon are offering for free is basically stuff that deserves to be free anyway, make sure you re-tick the Android security setting and revert back to the proper Android store that Google host.

When it first came out, it was great. Now, the free app is usually a very crappy game. In the past, I got:
Fancy Widgets Pro, Weatherbug Elite, Thumb Keyboard, App 2 SD Pro, Moon Phase Pro, Quickoffice Pro, SoundHound Infinity, Shazam, SwiftKey 3, and several other good ones.

1. I've never once gotten malware and I always sideload apps. I always leave that setting unticked as do most folks I'm sure.
2. having Amazon app store or any other app store doesn't change your default android Google play store.
You want malware, go download Blackmarket apps or pirate stuff, you'll get it then. I do suggest tho, that everyone should install a malware scanner. Avast, lookout, etc.

What? Side loading doesn't put you at any greater risk of malware. You always choose to install an app, whether you side loaded it or not.
Nothing wrong or risky with downloading the Amazon app store, being able to choose a different app store is one of the best things about android. CHOICE.
