What's the frame made of? - HD7 General

It looks like the frame around the hd7 is metallic...can anyone who has one confirm it is made of metal or whether its sprayed plastic?
i was only able to get hold of a dummy version in the o2 store this afternoon and when i bashed it againt my wedding ring it certainly felt plastic.
if anyone could confirm that would be most helpful

It's plastic.

Aluminum Metal Case

I received yesterday my protection for Leo. I share with you the results of this:

Thanks for sharing; however you would have been better off posting in the Cases thread where we all go to see what's happening in the world of cases.
WB
Agree with above poster, can a mod fix this?
Nice case! ive also ordered 1 last week at PDAir, the 1 without a screen, so easy acces, but fewer protection. I am hoping its more solid so i can put it in my back pocket without getting a red face everytime i realize i accidently put it there...
When did you order it and did it took long (i am eager to get mine, but now hope is gone till monday or tuesday...)
I disagree.
The "Cases" thread is too long and too complicated for discussing any one specific case.
Anyway I ordered mine just a moment ago and would very much like to hear how quick was the shipment, how snug is the fit and how reassuring the neoprene feels
It's a shame they opted for a plastic screen protector instead of either a window-less aluminum door or a transparent cover that lets you work with the touchscreen.

mohasea,
How thick is the plastic cover over the screen?
Does the plastic cover flex?
Do you think the plastic cover would prevent the screen being cracked if dropped screen down on ummm concrete?

I totally agree, wish they had a solid aluminum front door instead of the window cut-out covered in plastic or the other option they have of no plastic window cut-out. I would order one now, even not having my Leo yet, just because the front door was solid aluminum.
I am going to contact PDair and see if they would leave a few front doors out of the cnc cutter and have a full cover aluminum
Would you like one too, Duperman ?
Thank you,
Monnie
I have ordered an open screen case despite it may not fully protect the screen. HD2 has a glass screen and it is hard enough against scratch as what has been in iphone.

Absolutely
Mine, the one without screen plastic, is supposed to arrive between now and Jan 27th next year...(sometime)
take care
Anyone got theirs yet?
Would love to see some detailed photos and a review of the case pros/cons
Thank you,
Monnie
I'm debating whether to go with their leather flip case or this aluminum case...
I got this case and immediatly wished there was no plastic screen on the front door. So, I held it over some boiling water for about 2 mins and and then used my thumb nail (not kidding it was easy) to pry the plastic from the metal. The whole lot peeled off easily, i replaced the foam into the case and BAM perfect case. (be careful not to rip the foam, but if you do it will still stick back. also the foam stretched out a bit but pushed back into shape no problem. TIP: Work from the front side of the case, wedge your nail into the seem and loosen it all the way around. If it starts to get tough again, hold it over steam for a while longer.
Also.. when the plastic was still inplace and the case door was closed, there would be random screen presses and that was not cool, however now that the plastic is out, i can leave the door closed, press when I want too, AND there is no random case presses
I know this sounds like a poor fix, but it worked awesome and it looks like it was SUPPOSED to come this way.
Now all i need is for my zag shield (front only) to show up and im perfectly protected (minus water damage dammit)
awesome case guys im not kidding. you dont have to put the nubbin on in the back either so it doesnt add much bulk to teh phone. good luck yo.
Got mine too and I use the black open faced aluminum for local use and insert the whole unit;
aluminum case and all into the Maxpedition "Rat" wallet for carrying on belts etc.... http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/...&idcategory=11
Like it alot....
FWIW
well, do not kill me if I say so .. but it is ugly as hell.
I do not say that it does not protect the phone, or the the finishing it's not ok .. but from a slim phone with a huge screen, it looks like a bullet proof brick with a screen.
The whole idea of an elegant smartphone it's gone.
Small question: what do you hate about the original leather case?
It is elegant, slim easy to use and protect the phone in normal use conditions or small accidents.
Capdase Alumor Metal Case
Bought this silicon w/ aluminium backcover case by CAPDASE in Hong Kong, adding a more "solid" feel over the pure silicon case. It comes with a CAPDASE screen protector as well.
http://www.mobimega.com/capdase-alumor-metal-case-htc-hd2.html
Beware that the silicon case may not glue well to the aluminum backcover (I think it's the factory problem) which may leave a small gap between them when you put the phone in. I have to apply some glue to fix that myself. Apart from the case is nice and not too costly.

Hi,
I am seriously thinking about ordering one for my Desire (A8181).
But what I'm not able to find, is how it works. I mean, you seem to describe the case as a silicone skin, with a metal plate sticked to it.
I thought it was more like a silicone skin with another semi-case to "clip" over the silicon....
Can you confirm if I am right or wrong?
And can you post multiple angles pictures?
Thank you, it would be much appreciated!
thanks but

Ohh Great!
Thanks for the pictures! To me is one of the best cases i've ever seen.

HTC Leo Leather Case for £2.99

Hi Guys, just received this in today's post and only cost me £2.50 (was ordered on Boxing Day, they are now costing £2.99) including postage and packing from Hong Kong. My partner also bought one for her Tocco and the total cost was £5 by Paypal. What a bargain.
It is superb, leather, and exactly as described with magnetic catch. Leo fits perfectly but unfortunately the screen guard is a midge's too large but it isn't needed anyway.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250552030138&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Regards, Baz
Nice find How long did shipping take, and I presume the magnet doesn't effect the screen, or the compass?
It took exactly 10 days from ordering to delivery this morning. My partner's brother bought one for his HTC and showed me on Christmas Day. I ordered mine the next day and it arrived this morning. It's brilliant, especially as it was only £2.50 (although selling now for £2.99). Includes case, screen protector and screen wiper.
Magnet doesn't affect the screen as it's on the flap. I have tried the compass and the needle is affected if you move the magnet over or under the phone.
Regards, Baz
That is so darned cheap!!! I am impressed!
Thanks Baz - Ordered
I will use it for those 'rough & tumble' times when the phone needs more than my (ill fitting) Zagg

One of the pictures lower down show a plastic section that it clips into.
so it does, i did not hover the mouse, silly me.
Look ok for 3 of the queens pounds, i'm havin that.
TATA
Just taken delivery of one of these cases and I must say it's very good value. OK it's not 'true' leather but bonded leather so probably won't be as durable in the long-term as top-grain case, but unless you're extreme in your use of the HD2 then it'll probably last the 18-24 months of a typical phone contract.
The quality is very good and it fits very well, the plastic housing into which the phone fits offers great additional protection around the external perimeter of the phone so will reduce the risk of screen damage should the phone be accidentally dropped. The aperture for the camera lens in sufficiently deep enough to cover the lens cover so you don't get the annoyance of the sharpish lens from rubbing when in your pocket or on a nice polished table! Importantly (for me) it doesn't add too much bulk to the phone so it still slips easily into a shirt pocket and the phone can be easily popped-out so I can place it on my desktop cradle or in-car holder.
The finish looks very professional with the light grain being very similar to the grain on the original HTC leather pouch. It's a little more shiny than the original pouch finish and is in black, which I personally think suits the phone better. The stitching on mine is finished in a deep golden thread (slightly darker that the thread used on the HTC pouch) which adds a nice detail. The inside of the case is finished with a fine man-made suedette lining which shouldn't scratch or mark the phone in any way. There's no pockets for business cards or SD cards, but these would only add to the bulk and are not needed for most users I would have thought.
The fit is excellent and the phone fits into the hosing very snugly without the need for annoying clips or straps across the face of the phone. The magnetic clasp seems to hold very well and closes with a reasuring 'snap'. The volume control, Micro USB connector and headphone socket are all easily accessible when the case is open, although annoyingly there's no pass-through hole in the case to attach headphones when the case is closed. Apart from that and the compromise on the leather, there's little to fault this case and for the very low price you really can't beat it for smart looks and a good degree of protection for your phone.
In addition to the case, I was also supplied with a screen protector (with small cleaning cloth) which looks to be of reasonable quality although I haven't fitted this myself as I find these tend to lift at the edges and also reduce the responsiveness of the screen.
Given the low purchase price, I'll probably take a tool to the case and cut a whole for the headphone jack, I just need to find a suitable grommet/ferule or means to seal the hole so it doesn't fray or look too untidy. Any hints or tips on how perhaps to achieve this this would be welcome.
For £2.99, this is a no brainer. Just orderd mine.

Still waiting for mine (ordered 6th Jan...), so not sure what the material is in that area.
At your own risk,
If 'leather', use a belt hole punch.
Or a small SHARP drill (& if its hard plastic).
If (also) fabric, put a dab of super glue on the fabric, to seal the weave, first & let it dry before holing it.
If a man made woven fabric, heat the hole punch, so that it will fuse the cut edges of the hole when pierced.
Metal grommet / ferule not recommended in case it causes a short when inserting / removing the headphone jack. Over a period of time, might remove the gold plating off of a jack too.
Leather case
Picked up one of these a day or so after I got my device, same seller as OP.
The case is nice enough, have dropped it once already - no damage to the device thankfully. The front flap can fold all the way back round the device and be held there by the backside of the magnet in case you're watching a film/browsing/gaming and don't want the flap in the way.
The only downside that I can see is that it's an absolute git to get out of the plastic 'cradle' (more like a bleeding strait jacket) if you want to change memory card/battery or just get it out to show it off.
any comments?
was looking to get something along these lines, with slots for cards so I don't have to carry along my wallet at times, but without the belt clip/knob
the hand stitched cow leather is customizable but at 100euros, alittle out of my budget

Thanks for the reminder! almost forgot bout it, is it across the top row beside the notification LED? looked through the manual but no reference to it
BTW, found a cheaper alternative, just as functional from another thread
these ones bout 40euros each, the tan one allows access to the bottom ports whereas I dont think the black one does
which would you guys prefer? worry that the tan one might block the sensor as well
Just ordered one, thanks for the tip!

After testing some cases out there in the market there are 3 problems with alluminium cases for smartphones (in my opinion makes them not an option for me)
a) They are heavy. In a 140g phone like the XZ, you will notice the added weight of the alumiun, a lot.
b) They sometimes scratch the phone if you are not careful, especialy on the XZ that has the very poor shatter sheet "protecting" the glass on the back
c) They add way too much bulk to a phone like the xZ wich is only 7.9mm
TLDR: Alluminium cases for XZ are not worth it (imho)
Oh..guess have to pass it..God they look so cool!!
DevilCase looks cool, but very expensive and there are no reviews.

They look great, Not to bulky like it was previously mentioned. Yes, they do add size, but it looks good. That particular case, slide in very easily, and the give the phone appearance. Down side to all aluminum cases, they mess with the signal a little. Nothing major, but its passable. good Good case. I have 3 of them.
Ya, just wanna see if anyone bought it.

I had a metal bumper, but with the bumper the connection is very bad.
I bought the WIT Inc metal bumper off of amazon. It was really nice at first, but quickly lost its appeal. The fit was loose. It would rattle and annoy me after a day or so. And here's the kicker, I actually had a full Skinomi skin on it. Front, back, and all sides...and that thing was still loose. As for finish, well it was beautiful. But form before function is not for me. Lastly the smooth metal edges made my phone want to slide off of anything but a perfectly flat surface. Sounds silly but you would be amazed how easily it starts moving. Arm of my recliner, dash of car, and where.

Thanks for stopping me from buy and try metal bumpers.
You save my money.
Bumpers are great. Metal is nice and classy. But the two don't mix. Get a nice plastic/ TPU bumper. Right now I'm using docks a lot so I'm going almost all natural with a skin applied and have no problem. I've always been an otter box guy accepting this is difficult. Going out in the world with a phone that's not in a case makes me feel like I'm trying to sneak through a cactus field naked.

DevilCase Aluminum Bumper

I loved the one for the M7 and had to get it for the M8. Pics in the imgur link.
IMO the best aluminum bumper out there.
They fixed the tactileness of the volume button and cutouts are perfect. I particularly love how they cut out the top for the IR blaster. The edges are flush with my glass screen protector. The bolts are now allen key hex head with bigger bolt heads. PS didn't affect my reception on both the M7 and M8 for Tmo US.

You're right. I have bought a couple $10 ones off eBay. Those were flimsy compared to the DevilCase and the buttons never worked for me. The DC is easy to slip on and it seems like they put effort into it if that helps.
Though I'm the kind of guy that would buy $70 custom dbrand skins.
What did this cost you if you don't mind me asking? Have you noticed any issues with signal?
The lanyard loop on the bottom has basically sold me on this case.
I saw a 60FPS sample video from a concert on Reddit. That video sold this phone to me.
However I WILL NOTE bring my phone to a concert as crazy as I go with no wrist-strap.
This is the only case I've seen so far with one. Anyone know of some others with lanyard loops?
Finally, a proper bumper for M8.
I've tried *all* the cheap variants, ~$10 each(likely produced by same factory), extremely thin, their fits are not snug, your phone may slide around, even scratch itself on the case. I added a layer of soft electrical tape all around the internals to get them to fit better. Impacts on the corners will easily dent/bend the cases such that they may not fit anymore. One of them even sliced INTO the back of my phone, chipping the corners(a painful sight). After a while(~1 week), they'll start expanding, becoming looser around the middle and developing a soft bulge.
This costs roughly $32 USD, I'm not sure about shipping(I can only read simplified chinese). If I'm not wrong, each package comes with 5 sets of stickers for the front and back(shown in the video). Best part is that the bumper is designed just well enough to keep elevate the back of the phone off the table when placed on its back(shown in last image), none of the cheaper variants do that, though one of them do have thick fronts, suggesting to place the phone screen-down(no contact).
OP, please help clarify what I couldn't! And nice find!
This case looks great. I don't know of any cases off hand that have an IR cutout. I can't believe they make so many cases without that.

They're $49.99 on Amazon Prime. (USA) I wanted a premium bumper for my premium phone.
http://www.amazon.com/DevilCase-Alu...=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1407767057&sr=1-2
Black, Titanium Gray, Silver, Red, Champagne Gold.
Looks like all that's available are Red, Blue and Silver
I don't think US customers get a skin (mine didn't)
DevilCase only officially sells through Amazon to the US. I have my dbrand on anyway.
EDIT: The skins are about $8 USD
http://www.amazon.com/DevilCase-Bac..._3_m?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1407767701&sr=1-3
Half the price of the dbrand (Except it looks like the front doesn't wrap around like the dbrand)
But yeah, I had the same bumper for the M7 and threw my phone around no problems. No flex to the bumper at all.

Yeah, they actually boast about it on their website lol.

Hey just so you guys know, you can order from the taiwan website! They will ship it international and include a guide to purchase for foreigners as well. The grey seems to be out of stock on anything but the taiwan site, so I am going to try ordering from there!
I hope they make it in plastic or polycarbonate. Metal just kills the reception.

I think that's why they left the top of the phone uncovered. Since the M8 is wrapped in metal except for the top and the screen, most of the antenna are likely to be at the top, so this wouldn't interfere with signals so much. Then again, this is just a guess.
The previous bumpers I've used which wraps around entirely do noticeably affect signal strength, though.

Received mine here in Germany from Taiwan today, ordered directly from their website. Took 9 days, price including shipping was 37,50 €, plus 7,19 € import tax, which I payed when I picked it up from customs.
No reception loss, fits perfect, and the skins are included (all available colours).
Best decision since buying the One M8. :good:
Ordered mine one week ago from France.
For those people like me from country where it is impossible to ordered in amazon.com, here is my workaround, shipito.com.
Make an account on that site, pay 5 dollars, get an US address, send the DevilCase to the US address.
When shipito receive it, send it to your address.
Will post pictures when getting mine

So just to clarify, if you have the face up the back is completely off the surface it's laid on? And likewise if the screen is down? I really like the look of it, and really interested.

Correct, Face down, the bumper is flush with my glass screen protector. Just enough to lay flat but not touch the front. On the back the lip is higher on the top and bottom and it's curved a little bit.
After reading this thread and since I wanted to switch to a more pocket-friendly protection (used UAG Maverick semi-clear case before hand, which was excellent but slightly bulging in pocket), I decided to order this bumper from their Taiwanese website.
Ordered the gray color, a perfect match to the gunmetal M8 if you ask me.
Had to pay approx. 9.7$ (USD, that is) for customs fee, which is slightly annoying but that's not Devilcase's fault.
The bumper itself is very well build and precisely cut, feels very durable, volume buttons are responsive and easy to press, cut outs for USB + headphone + IR blaster are generous and the lanyard hole is a nice extra (if a matching color lanyard was included that could be nice too ).
The bumper came with five stickers: Gold, Blue, Black and 2 different shades of Gray. The stickers have brushed metal texture on them but the texture goes vertically whereas the M8 had a horizontally textured body.
Personally, I have a naked SlickWraps sticker on my device so I haven't tested Devilcase's stickers but someday in the future I'll probably want to change things up a bit and will find them useful.
Protection is excellent as the front has a tiny lip and the back has a curve that lifts the device from the surface it sits on.
Overall, excellent bumper. Not a cheap case, price-wise and quality-wise.
Very recommended for those who want minimum bulk yet high quality material and fashionable protection.
Thank you for letting me know about this case and hope this mini-review helped others too
@PcFish - Where'd you get that back cover from?

Polished chamfered edge

Nice to see Samsung going with a premium metal finish and it does look stunning when new but 2 weeks down the line and it is covered in tiny scratches etc...
I look after my phones, tbh I'm a little bit OCD but even still the edge is looking tatty.
I then got a TPU case to try and protect it... 2 days later, it is scratched to hell! Just the case alone touching the chamfered edge is enough to scuff it...
what did Samsung make it out of? Cheese? A soft cheese at that!
I love my note 4 but...
I have the same experience. Maybe if it gets too bad I'll try the method used in this video.

Is this the white or black version you are talking about?
I've got the Ringke Slim on mine and it covers the edges. No scratches on mine.
It's the black one I have...
the coloured part is immaculate still but the polished section looks a mess
My note 2 seemed to fair much better in terms of durability.
Also, the camera lens cover is very exposed on these, I hope it can be replaced somehow in the future (although no scratches yet)
Same here with the white one. Got scratches on the chamfered edge from being in a pants pocket for gods sake. Anybody know to go about buffing them out?
Sorry to hear that you are having those problems. I am not trying to burst your bubble but the "metal" finish around the Note 4 is NOT metal. I have have read a post on this forum of another person saying the same thing and so I went down to my nearest BB to check it out. I am now convinced that he was right.
Here is the test I carried out to prove the point. I found a Galaxy Alpha and examined the similar finish and that is truly metal. With the AC in Best Buy I was able to put the Alpha to my cheek and you can feel the coldness of the metal. I then walked over to the Samsung store in BB and did the same with ALL the Note 4s on display and they were all just at reasonable temp. Also on the Alpha it will be noticed that the headphone jack and the charging port is covered in plastic or rubber inside of the metal cutout. Take a look at he N4 slot for the pen or the headphone jack and you will see that the white plastic is just covered by the " metal" finish.
That my friend is why you are having scuff marks already on your new device. It is JUST a "METAL" finish on the outside. Now if there is a metal frame it is on the inside, not on the outside like the Alpha. Can't wait to see a teardown from folks like IFIXIT to confirm. I could be wrong but until proven wrong I will stand by my cheek test.
No, it is metal (aluminium I believe ) but it is very thin. When you look at the headphone jack port like you say there is plastic but there is still a thin metal part of the frame...
Samsung wouldn't have needed to add the spacers in the frame (small white blocks top and bottom) if it was metal effect. These are there for the antennas to work properly in the metal.
Aluminium is a very soft metal, perhaps if they chose a more sturdy, harder metal like titanium for example then we wouldn't be having this problem but then we would have paid more for the already expensive phone.
For me I'll just end up keeping the TPU case on, it feels better in the hand and against the ear (metal frame has quite sharp edges) and offers some protection without adding much bulk to the device. Maybe once the phone has been used a while I'll look into customising the frame with either plastidip or hydroprint.
Yeah it would be made of aluminium. People wanting that "premium" look and feel. Just like the iPhone and any other phone made of an alloy, looks awesome out of the box but after a while scratches will appear. Plastic resists much much better, that's just the way it is.
Also it would have been hilarious watching you going around touching the bezels with your face
remove the back cover and look at the frame closely: you can see that the whole frame is definitely NOT metal. it is plastic with metal coating or layer and some metal inlays.
I highly doubt that the frame only has a metal coating. If you check the YouTube video of the guy bending the ip6p, note 3 and 4 you will see the note 3 bend and bounce back because it's plastic. Alloy on the other hand bends and stays bent. Looking at you note 4.
Of course I could be wrong.
It does seem to be a thin metal covering over a plastic frame...
gives the look of a premium device but the protection and flexibility of a plastic device
The frame is made of metals collected from the moon and the back cover leather is made from the skin of puppies.

Whether its a thin metal strip on the top or solid metal, the nature of being aluminium is that it will scratch easily. It is the same with the HTC One that also has a chamfered edge. I have read many reports of it getting scratched too easily. If you look closely at the edge you will see that at the very least it is a metal strip. Thickness has nothing to do with scratch resistance. So we can argue whether it's solid or not, but the relevance to the initial poster's issue that it scratches easily is zero!
Everyone complained about Samsung's cheap looking plastic bezel. Now we are complaining about the upmarket stylish metal one! I guess a finish like the edges of an iPhone 6 are the only option that will satisfy everyone's needs. Incidentally I do remember reports of people with the bumper case on an iphone 4...took it off, to find that the little imperfection nodules of plastic on the inside of the bumper were enough to rub and wear the metal surround of the phone!
And if they had anodized it, it would have prevented scratches (like Nokia n8),but would have caused the frame to crack more easily, unless they used more surface, or thicker pieces of aluminum, which in turn would affect other things. So pointless.

Even if it was made of adamantium people would still complain.

Even in manufacturing these metals are impossible to keep pristine. I had an iPhone 4 with a small nick in the metal band out of the box. I had an HTC One with a couple of little nicks and microscratches in the band out of the box. And my note 4 also has a few imperfections. But then it's best not to study these phones under a spotlight because you will just find things you don't want to see!
I think/hope the issue lies with TPU cases simply because they, as all cases trap dirt under them but because they are TPU they have more movement.... the dirt gets ground against the polished edges. Hard cases like the Ringke do not have this movement...
Would be helpful to others if people who are experiencing this issue state which cases they have used.
Thanks.
