Screen not locking - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

recently my screen has stopped locking when i stop using the phone. if i press the power button, it will go black and will lock. if i use the phone (call, message, anything) and just put it down, the screen dims slightly but does not go black or lock, i just have to touch the screen and it brightens. i have tried setting the screen timeout for different lengths of time, but that didn't help. any ideas?
another example is when the alarm goes off in the morning, i will snooze and have to press the power button to get the screen to go black.
thanks!
oh, i'm running a stock captivate.

Are you using the app "No-LED"?

Well I'm not sure how technical you are, but you may want to reflash your phone.

Screen Randomly Turns on When Unit is Off

Tried Forum/Google search for this and too many results.
Situation: My noob friend buys a refurbished AT&T Tilt after my praises and he reports that the screen randomly wakes up when the unit is off without any action on his part. What could be the common causes? My Tilt doesn't do this even after Hard-SPL, SIM unlock, and third party apps. He has none of this so far, just the stock ROM. Should I tell him to get a replacement? Do refurbished models have this problem?
the screen should turn on after you press the power button. press it again and the screen turns off. hold it and it wil shut down/power off. i thought that was normal -_-
isnt that the whole point?? u press the power button to wake it up??
I am LMAO at the responses so far. He is pressing the power button to turn it off. After it turns off, it will wake up randomly without any action on his part. I will edit the thread title to be more clear.

Thanks. I don't know if that is what is happening to him, but I will direct him to that thread.
The screen "wakes up" when ever an alarm goes off or you receive a message. Can you confirm that nothing is happening? i.e.:
1. it did not auto-connect to check for messages.
2. your friend did not receive a text message
3. no alarms went off
???

I will ask him and post the answers here.
I have the same problem on my stock tilt any solutions anyone? I have done numerous hard resets and that seems to the solve the problem for a couple months then it returns.
could be battery check from sprite backup
Sprite backup has an auto backup when it detects low battery. To test for low battery it periodically turns the device on - if you have sprite backup installed this could explain it.
somthin that was happening to mine for a bit was when i logged on to AIM for a while, it started doing that.... then ever since, even if app is completely closed out, it kept doing it!! it would randomly light up for no freakin reason (no auto login, no apps running) jus light up, then go dim???.... tried everything, eventually got new ROM and hasnt done it since. see if he has used the IM app, that was the problem for me...
there could be so many reasons why it would wake. Just the simple slide of the screen will wake it up. Theres a registry tweak to turn it off. There's also power options your friend can play around with.

[Q] ~ My lock Screen is gone ~

Today when i woke up my phones fine, then i go to check a text message and notice, it did not show the lock screen. I lock the phone and again no lock screen.
I then power off the phone and no luck then pulled the battery, still the same thing. i end up having to do a factory reset on then phone and well it working now.
I'm just afraid the it will happen again and wanted to know if any one has any information regarding this issue???
Thank you!!

I noticed my lock screen would only sometimes show up. If you go into settings for the lockscreen you can set it to only show up every x minutes. Mine was set to 20. I've since changed it and now it's there everytime...

funny cause i thought the lock screen was over-sensitive. usually on d1/d2, if you hit the power button and then hit it again, the lock screen would not show up most of the time. like the screensaver on your desktop, if you respond fast enough, you won't have to unlock.
everytime i turn my screen off, i get the lock screen. so?

Phone Locking Up Issue (2 Phones)

Both my wife and I have the S5 att. We don't do anything custom on the phones, my wife plays a few games and I use mine mainly for emails and Web browsing.
Here lately, both of our phones will lock up while using them. The screen will be on and it just freezes. You can click the power button and it will go black, and back on when pressed again. You can't restart the phone, you must pull the battery.
Hers doesn't while mainly texting and mine while waking the phone up.
Any thoughts.

Ive had mine lock up similarly, twice. When mine does it, it freezes, i hit the power button, screen goes black. However, when i hit it again, the screen stays black. The capacitive buttons light up, they go back out if i hit it again, and yet again, if i hit it they come back on. Ive let it sit for about 10 minutes but still in the end would up pulling the battery.
No power saving mode. I restart mine every other day, my wife not so much.

Mine has done the same. Only once though. I went to unlock it and the water drop touch sound was going off like I was touchtouchtouchtouchtouchtouch like 10-15 times. Holding down power gave me the restart/power menu but touching it was non responsive. It kept swapping itself from the home screen to the screen setting menu (that you get when you long hold the open app button) .. I set it down for about 5-6 minutes and left it alone and it finally fixed itself. Very strange. Ive been running 100% stock out of the box since I got it last weekend.

Same problem as this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726029
Extraordinarily frustrating, i'm on the verge of sending my second phone back as well, just to get the point across. I have to pull my battery 2-3 times a day.
Ive had this issue a couple times, it seems to be triggered for me by the use of some functions within apps, in my case the facebook app brought on a crash, which I needed to pull the battery

[Q] Does your HTC ONE M7 do this?

When going to bed tonight do these steps.
1. Put your phones brightness display on the lowest setting
2. Plug your phone in for an overnight charge, do not "turn off" your phone.
3. Wake up in the morning
4. Click the power button on your HTC ONE M7
Did the screen turn on? Are the Soft Keys the only part that lights up?
I've been able to replicate this problem over and over on 3-4 different HTC ONE M7's. For some reason the phone's display will not turn on in the morning. The only way to get it to is to either hold down the power button for a few seconds and the restart screen will pop-up which activates the screen again. Or, to do a complete restart.
Eventually the screen starts working again like normal after fiddling with it for 15-20 minutes...
I believe this is either a KitKat problem or light sensor problem or both. I do know this issue was never around before the KitKat upgrade months back.

I#ve never run across that problem but I know when I enable "ScreenOn" the screen stays on all night and if I just let my phone sit with screen on (because I fell asleep texting ) the screen will be off in the morning.

this has been happening to me for the longest its very irritating, i notice it happens whenever i fall asleep, a nap during the day or when i wake up in the morning its really annoying
Well glad to see I'm not the only one.

Yes I had the same issue as the original post.Long story short I ended up sending the device back. The new one didn't suffer from this problem. This was back in October of 2013.
Same issues, it's probably light sensor:

Nope. I already tried the light sensor calibration trick. It didn't work unfortunately. I ended up swapping out 4-5 HTC ONE's before it worked correctly.
yup, I tried the trick as well a few more times and could not wake the screen either. generally I'm tolerant of stuff like this because I assume it is the byproduct of repeated flashing and combo of mods.. but I I recall this happening quite early on in ownership and now it's back. (was AOSP now Sense base). sigh

Power button doesnt wake up the phone.

Hi,
My note 8's screen got damaged a month ago, but
from past two days the power button seems to be
unresponsive.
I have to press it atleast 10-15 times for my screen
to wake up.
Even if the screen doesnt turn on by a single click,
the usual touchscreen functions still work.
Ex: I can still open the particular app by clicking the screen
on the specific area.
Kindly help.

There's nothing any of us can do to help you when it's a hardware issue like this. You need to open the back of the phone using a heat gun to loosen the glue and then take the power button out and replace it with a new one.. There's nothing else that can be done and I would suggest that you not shut the phone down or let the battery die out because then you may not be able to turn it back on until you get the power button taken care of!

Hi MrMike2182,
Thanks but let me elaborate the issue.
The power button seems to be working fine because it takes approximately 10 to 15 clicks to turn on the screen (sometimes 1 or 2 click)
Let's say that I click the power button and the screen doesn't turn on, the screen functions work fine despite showing black screen.
Ex:
1. If I click on screen location where samsung music is placed and open it, and if I and click on the location of the play button, it plays the music just fine.
2. If I click on the restart button when the screen is black (not turned on), the phone does restart. The Samsung logo lits up just fine. (Mensing to say, the bootup process is not affected)
Also, note that if I successfully manage to turn on the screen after clicking the power button 10-15 times and if I put it to sleep again. I can easily turn on if I click the power button immediately (within the span of 2 seconds).
The problem persists only if the phone is kept I'd for 5 to 10 minutes.

Ok based on what you said now I don't believe there's anything wrong with your power button and when you press it and the screen doesn't turn on, in reality it actually is on and it's possibly damaged which is why you can still use the screen functions with the black screen. Whatever type of damage you say happened to it could be causing the backlight to not work but the screens touch function is fine.. Try rebooting into recovery mode and select to clear the phone's cache only and see if it helped anything.. If it doesn't help anything it's pretty much a screen hardware problem and you'll still have to get into the phone's internals..

Since the factory reset didn't work, then unfortunately it really is a hardware issue.. I think you need a new screen..
I have the official led cover case, just opening the case will turn the screen on... Just a temp fix until you can get it repaired maybe.
