Hey all
Just got the OTA 2.2 build FRF91. So far its been great. However I do have one problem. It is extremely annoying that the new messaging client shows the contact icon on every message within a thread. Is there a way to make it so within a thread the messages just show the name of the person. Like how it was in 2.1? Or is there a way I can put the 2.1 build of the messaging client on froyo? Thanks

Don't think so. Why don't you use a third party SMS client like chompSMS which allows you to customise the UI?

Dear forum,
I'm having this issue with gmail marking my unread emails as read at midnight everyday. It only applies to emails received the previous day. That is, if I mark emails from previous days as UNREAD, these emails will not be marked as READ at midnight (only emails received during the day).
This happened to me after I updated my HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint) to 2.1 (not RUU, but the previous release rom; couldn't post link because I'm new)
After upgrading to CM6 (Aug 29), the problem continue to persists.
I couldn't find any information googling. I know my android phone is causing it because if I turn off the phone at night, this issue does not happen.
Can anyone confirm this bug? Any suggestions on fixing it?
Thanks.
Vinh
Hi, does anyone else have this issue? It's still happening for me, but every few days now as opposed to daily at around midnight. Thanks.

Are you using the gmail app? Or are you using the stock email? Try using a different one, like gmail (if you're using the stock), k9 if you're using gmail. Also try wiping your cache and clearing the data from gmail. Try it and report back.

@Twolazyg Thanks for the response. I am using the Gmail App (updated to the latest version). I want to stay in Gmail App and not use the stock email app or K9 since I want the gmail features. I've wiped out the cache as you have suggested. I'll wait a few days to see if all my unread messages get marked as read and report back then. Again, thanks.
Unfortunately, the problem still persists. Any other suggestions? This is driving me nuts.
Did you ever find a solution? I am having the same problem. And it has occurred off and on for a over a year. I started with Eclair then to FroYo and now Gingerbread. (I have a first release of the HTC Droid Incredible.) I prefer the features of the Gmail app and so that is what I use. My phone is rooted and for the most part, does what I want it to do outside of this pesky email issue.
Maybe your wife is snooping your emails at night.

I NEVER found a solution. I thought I was the only one having this issue. Tried many things, from upgrading my CM rom and upgrading the Gmail app, yet nothing worked. I just upgraded to an HTC EVO 3D last week and this doesn't happen anymore (I think).

I take this back. This marking of emails as read at night also happens on my HTC Evo 3D...now I'm thinking, it must be me. I do have a script that backs up my gmail account every night on my server....is this marking them as unread??? AHHH

Confirmed. This was not a bug in the Gmail app or the Android OS. It stems from the fact that I use getmail to make backup my gmail account daily. Sorry! Now I just need to figure out how to back up without marking the messages as read.
Consider this problem SOLVED!
mine was doing the same thing until i went to my gmail account on my computer n deleted them. im not sure why they werent showing up in the app but they showed up on the site.
I cannot seem to send sms messages when I install handcent on this phone. Mms work fine, and I can receive all day. Not sure why, has anyone else seen this?

that's interesting cuz i was having similar issues as well.. not all the time, but just had that first occurence yesterday. Have you tried sending a message and waiting for the "spinning" timer disappear before exiting the convo?
I have used handcent since day one with the phone and have had no issues. Im not sure what may be wrong with yours but maybe wait until the circle stops spinning like ^^ said

Yeah, I have. It works fine on my gf fascinate, but not mine. Funny thing is, I've gone all the way back to stock and still won't work. Maybe a network profile thing.

I have a similar problem except SMS works fine for me but I cannot receive MMS messages. I can send MMS fine though... I hope 2.2 will fix it.
Daswolven,
Aren't you the same person that posted that thread about removing junk apps? I think some of those VZWSMS apk's you deleted might be affecting your ability to text because I removed everything VZW.apk and had too many issues with texting such as receiving the same message 30x's, people receiving an error message saying I never received their message even though I did, etc... So I reflashed an ODIN file and only removed the obvious apps such as Bing, Blockbuster, etc. Phone has been perfect with handcent since then. The stock messaging app will not tell you which exact message failed to be sent which is why I went with handcent.
ithecho84 ,
Contact tech support and have the "flush" out your cell number. I had the same problem with my DROID and they did something to the switch in the network and I have never had an issue with MMS ever again.

I am the same person.
I also know exactly what the apps I remove do.
None of the apps I removed affect sms to cause the issues I am having.
My g/f has the same phone. I have removed the same apps on hers, she doesn't have the issues.
I have a buddy with a droid incredible on CM6, he flashed a new radio and couldn't text his GF, but only her.
I have another friend with a Droid2 who cannot use handcent.
The handcent boards have posts from people on every network with various phone who have various issues.
I never had a problem with handcent on my N1.
So then, Mr. Logic boy. Put that together for me with the pieces I have given you.
let me know what you come up with.
P.S.: You may have missed the "I went back to stock and it still didn't work" part of This Thread.
Make sure the stock Mms.apk app is there, reboot and give it a try. I also saw a few days ago you moved the sns apps off - out of curiosity, do you know what these do? For some reason I left them in there. I know you said you went back to stock and all, but I had some issues when I tried to get rid of the stock Mms.apk. That's all I can think of. Outside of that, try doing a logcat while sending a text to see what the logs say.

The sns enable the syncing with the integrated Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace clients into your address book and the TouchWiz widgets. I have no use for these, as to me it's unnecessary contact clutter, and sync drain to boot.
The stock Mms app can be replaced, and has been, but I use the stock for the ability to select multiple recipients which is absent in the Android stock mms.
I haven't figured out all the differences between the Verizon and T-mo network stuff yet, but I will do some research as I have time, because I am 90% sure my problem lies there. The tech support I've been able to get through to seems uninterested in any kind of in depth troubleshooting, instead urging me to replace the handset, which I will not do.
I had same issue and I uninstall and put it back without using the back up data from a back up . Worked great .

SMS Issues
If you look at your contacts and see an + in front Example (+1-555-555-5555) it will not send. Im coming from GSM service so I had to re-edit all my contacts and remove all the + symbol from the front. It worked for me. Hope this helps with any SMS issues not just directly to Handcent.

OMG.
I hate when something that drives you completely crazy is this simple.
Why in the hell doesn't Verizon know this? ha. Thanx.

I was wondering if you resolved your problem with Handcent? I have a problem now where if I try and attach a picture to a mms directly from the camera Handcent force closes. I tried the same thing with the stock MMS and same result. I went to Rom Manager and downloaded the MMS.apk for the ROM that I am running. I tried it again on Handcent, same result, but I was able to do it from the stock MMS I downloaded. I personally like all the options that Handcent has and would like to know if you have any suggestions regarding my problem.
Yeppers. Whatever the issue was stopped after I changed my methods of building from stock a bit.
Never managed to pin point it.

I'm confused by the notes about the "+" in front of phone numbers? Why would you have a "+" like that, and what does that have to do with GSM? Furthermore, can you send a text to these numbers with the stock Messaging app, but NOT Handcent? Or does it work in neither? Thanks.
If you find a specific, reproduceable issue with Handcent though, especially if you know the cause, let me know if you want, because I've been working with one of the developers (or the developer, I'm not sure) - Jack, directly and frequently. I'm the one that cleaned up the Handcent forums to get rid of all the spam threads/users recently (if you've ever been there, you'll know how horrible it was prior), and helped him get it changed over to SMF from phpbb2, etc. I'm also a mod on the forums there, and I've been testing a few bugs directly with him, on beta builds of Handcent. So I can certainly bring something to his attention directly if it warrants it.
So about once a day my stock email app fc's. Also for some reason I keep getting the new email notification when I don't have a new email. I am rooted, running JH7, but it was happening before the ota update. Any suggestions?

Problem: I have two exchange email accounts that I cannot swipe away from active notifications. I can swipe them away but they reappear shortly after. This does not occur with my gmail notifications.
I think I know what the problem is tied to but I cannot find a workaround or solution. I am using the exchange security bypass email apk. Its basically the stock email apk but with hacks so you don't have to set up security. I have had this problem 4.2.2 running the same apk. with eclipse rom based on 4.2.2. and now with eclipse based on 4.4.2. I am no longer using the email i used earlier from an xda thread because nitro put in his own email apk with security hack built in.
I have searched a lot and haven't found anything. I know that 4.4 had problems with exchange giving multiple notifications on nexus devices and others but I don't get multiple notifications on my notification bar, only on the active display.
Currently i have to unlock the phone and remove the email notification from my noti bar for it to stop showing up repeatedly in active notifications. I'm hoping there is a simple solution that i have just not found or a thread i couldn't find. I assure you that i searched for a long while on google and xda and other forums looking for answers and didn't find anything.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help but have noticed the same.
Well at least I know its not just me Now. I haven't found anyone else talking about it and its such a pita to deal with that I thought it might just be something weird with my set up

Glad to hear I'm not alone here either. I'm using the stock email app (no security hack) and the notifications come back after dismissing. I thought there were a couple times that they went away after dismissing a few times, but I haven't been able to reproduce that in any consistent fashion.
Love to hear if anybody has a fix for this though.

I have never actually dismissed it that many times because I get pissed but I did read reports of stock email app on nexus giving multiple notifications for an email in the bar even after they swiped away the notification. Maybe they fixed that issue for them but it didn't fix active notification issues. If more people report it with the stock email app then maybe I'll try to talk to moto about the issue. It just doesn't seem like it is possible that its that wide spread and not really anyone has complained yet.

Here's a potential resolution/workaround. I just came across AcDisplay (also available in the Play store), which adds some great features to the Active Display and seems to fully dismiss the Exchange notifications. I just started using it today based on a recommendation from a friend that also has an X and so far so good.
