I remembered doing this on my samsung moment and thought I'd try it on Epic and it works for fonts, maybe we can figure out how to do themes as well in the future.
Here is a link to the original thread by Stericson: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329 about the app called MetaMorph for more detail, the general idea is to have theme/font files on the sdcard and the app will install them for you with a reboot to complete the process.
Here is a .zip to try it with: MyFonts
note: I have only tried 3 of these and one was a bit too large. This won't hurt your phone it just won't look right. The stock font is in it for restoring if you wish to.
Stick the .zip on your sdcard
Download MetaMorph from the market(both free and donate versions available)
When you first start the app it will do a system check and if you don't have busybox installed it will tell you. If it says you don't there are free/donate verisons on the market as well so go grab it and install it. I installed it with the default settings.
Now open MetaMorph again and after the checks select Unzip/Extract new theme. None will show but thats ok, hit the blue arrow on the bottom. Now scroll to MyFonts.zip and select it. After it extracts you will see a screen describing the details, hit close. You will see a list of fonts now that all begin with SubTheme:
Select the one you want to apply and then hit Apply it! and Continue? It will then ask you to reboot but that isn't working for our phone so just hit no and do a manual reboot.
After the reboot your font will be applied.
The pick existing theme function shows the fonts but they all show as empty for some reason. No worries, use the Unzip/Extract option and either update/replace option and they will show again. Not sure why you have to extract them every time but it still works this way.
You can add and delete fonts from the sample I provided if you are adventurous. Just unzip it and take a peek at the structure inside as well as the xml control file.
Just thought I'd share this for those who are lazy like me yet always trying to change the look of there phone throughout the day...or am I the only one that does this?
If anyone knows how to use this more properly or anything I've missed I will update this post, thanks.
Good looking out, just changed my fonts to the cartoon option and its awesome!!

Good idea, I'm too busy today but tonight I'll see what I can do. If anyone else has the time I would appreciate the help. You can simply unzip the file and inside you will see all the different fonts by name. When you open one up you will see two ttf files, one is bold and one is standard. Click on the ttf file and it will show a preview.

Here you go, theres 22 of them so I'm just going to post the link to the album, if you want me to post each individual picture than I will, but I think that would be way too many photos and too cluttered, specially at 800x800 res like they are lol.
Samples Of Each Font
I only got the Standard versions of each one, the Bold versions are no different other than they are, well, in bold lol.

+1 I would like this also.
Very nice! My personal opinion the "Russel Squared" font looks the most "Android-ish" if you will. Of course thats just my opinion. Also it fits very nicely, looks good in the app drawer, messaging, etc.
Anyways way to make it easy for the noobs. I personally always extract the zip first, and use "Pick existing theme" then find the XML of the theme. That way I dont have a zipped and non zipped sitting on my SD. Its a little tiny file I know I'm just anal
In any case though you made it simple for all of us to add some more variety to our themes with utmost simplicity Thanx!
wow, works very good, thank you
Is there a way to add our own fonts?
thanx.
Just Love it!!!

nope, you're not the only one..... this is exactly what i was looking for. the only thing is, the app goes thru the whole process, but when i reboot, the font isn't chnged. not a hige deal, but i would like to see what these fonts look like on my phone.
Raider I changed the fonts in a theme and it killed the rom because it looked for the details loaded into the ttf to match the name of the file. Example is if I found a font I like and on the phone it's androidsansserrif and I just rename *.ttf the fonts description was still the original fonts name and therefore the phone would stop. Does this method bypass having to use a font creator to change the description or did you have to change that for all of them. I'm running dk28 dont know if you are or not

I wanted to be able to get the themers to use mm as well, so I been experimenting with it and there are a few limitations that are a killer.
500 file write max. Most in depth themes will be two or 3 separate flashes .
framework has to be last because it causes a reboot and sometimes takes 2-3 flashes to take everything
On top of that, we have technically two frameworks. We would be doing a lot of support in our threads. Also it can't theme market apps it claims, I hope it can, cause that would still add an update zip for all of them.
I wanted to get stericson and some of us themers to work together on getting some of these hurtles behind us.

I seem to remember on the Hero this not being superior to any ROM cooker/themer changing the update.zip b/c of lots of FC's. I *thought* this was better for stock users but I don't know, I remember themers changing fonts through other methods though...
It actually work wonders for small flashes, either fonts or just a few pictures. Its also easier for testing an image and you have to keep flashing over and over. As far as fcs and all the only problems I get are errors in my code. It's entire themes that give it hell .

If its seems like I am all over the place with this stuff, its probabaly cuz I am. My thread maintenance skills are sub par, but all you guys care about is the good stuff right
With the exception of the BTC2 & Twitter widgets, the base of my work has been focused on Rosie colors. I will try and maybe create nuetral themes(whites,blacks,greys) so that they can be interchangable with Rosies you may find here. I welcome anyone who wants to share their custom skins to go ahead and post here for all. Just tell us what version Rom you pulled the .apk from so we know its compatibility and to avoid posts asking where it came from.

So here is the lite Neon Hero theme for JACxHEROWSKI v1.4. This theme is EXPERIMENTAL as it still needs some testing. IT IS NOT THE FULL ROM. I have successfully flashed it over JAC's Rom without any problems. FOR BRAVE SOULS ONLY!!!! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!! The theme will delete data on /system/sd so make sure you use BACKUP FOR ROOT USERS or apps of the sort to backup all your important apps/app data/settings/contacts etc. You will have to go through the setup again same as when you flash new roms
Directions:
1. BACK UP ALL APPS/APP DATA YOU WISH TO RE-INSTALL
2. Place on root of sd
3. reboot into recovery
4. NANDROID BACKUP!!
5. *****DO NOT WIPE*****
6. apply either as update.zip or use the any zip flash function
7. Reboot

Alright, I could no longer wait for a Hero template so i decided to put my smarty pants on and create one myself. The end result, is a working lite Ice Blue hero theme(not the full rom) that SHOULD be able to be flashed over Drizzy's Who's Your Hero roms. I label is experimental because its still needs to be tested & its a work in progress. I have successfully applied it to Drizzy's ChampionV2 rom without any issues. The theme zip will clear your app_s,app, and dalvik cache folders the same way if you were to flash a new rom. And upon reboot you will have to go through the set up. I havent figured out a way around this as its coded into Drizzy's hero roms, so for the moment it will have to do. I created this to try and make theming the Hero an easier process, and if they're arent any major issues hopefully it will be a breeze from now on and put things on the fast track. Any brave souls want to try it out? but use at your own risk. If you have issues please post and let me know and if you are able to flash without problems on different roms also post here.
I hope other Hero themers can work with me if there are ways to improve the Hero Theme template/update script. I have reached out to Hero devs but they have enough on their plate to deal with. We need this really bad. The method of flashing below was the only way I successfully flashed without bootloops
Directions:
1. BACK UP ALL APPS/APP DATA/DATA YOU WISH TO RE-INSTALL
2. Place on root of sd
3. reboot into recovery
4. NANDROID BACKUP!!!!!!

UPDATE: Ice Blue JACxHEROv1.1 8/17/09
Alright so here it is. Not much to say other than enjoy, and post feedback. A FULL WIPE, EXT partitions and all is recommended to avoid bootloops. Nandroid backup to be safe. I will be holding off on the Drizzy FullV3. I ran into some issues during testing. Mainly apk/odex issues. The Mms.apk was acting a fool. And so was TouchFlo. I need to redo a couple things and it'll be released. But after testing, I do believe that most JACxHerov1.1 apks are compatible with the Who's Your Hero Roms. Use at your own risk!
**This is a Full Rom, put it on the root of your SD and flash!**
Also to other themers, you are more than welcomed to use my work. I encourage it . If anyone wants to try and port my work to other Roms, feel free. But at the very least give me a shout out. That much would be appreciated.
This theme is still a WIP, because there are still a few things to touch up. But as is im sure it should satisfy. This is my first Full Theme that has been shared with the Community. Much has been taken, now I give a little back. Thanks to all the Devs who lead the way! Anyway enough talk, screens:

Here it is, a temporary fix for the blacked out 3G icon in the status bar. I missed it the first time because it wasnt in the framework-res folder where the other status bar icons were. It was in the resources folder by itself, strange. Anyway here it is, you can push this through adb or terminal. It worked for me without even having to reboot. Will be fixed in the next update

HELP NEEDED FOR A CUSTOM ONE-OFF ROSIE
***8/14/09 5pm
Okay so I'm working on a new design for a Rosie and I can't seem to find where the "Phone" .png or .xml is located. This Rosie is pretty much done. The Hero logo in the middle replaces the old middle tab button as the action button. Also I need if somecan to either edit or find the file that moves the red sliders position. I tried to contact Diaztradeinc because he has something similar in his Blues/Dark Red themes but I haven't heard back from him. If some can either send the file or even the Rosie.apk from that theme I can just swap it in. If I can finish this Rosie, I will be able to build from this and possibly come up with something else in the future. Anyway heres a screen shot, tell me what you think
When Pressed
Edit: Just realized I might swap splaces and make the white Hero logo the default rest tab. It think it'll look better reversed. Off too continue working on the theme. Hopefully ill have something completed this weekend.
Oh and a New Transparent Light Blue Rosie can be seen here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4330396&postcount=28

Okay guys. I just got home and ill be working on the BTC2 pack for a couple hours before I head out to see District 9 tonight . I already have a few more widgets done. I even touched up the color placement on the Twitter widget. I even started messing with the framework so anyone who is a fan of the BTC2 will probably like what I've come up with. changing the color of the loading circle to darker red...not as dark as maroon but a lil lighter than maroon n darker then red...and could use the same color when u click on any app...may b the image below...i dont really have the greatest graphic program but may b something similar to the color below as the loading circle and stuff...also if u wanna test something c how the application tray would look with the background the same as the wallpaper and the where it says "All Programs" could b change to the same color as the loading circle
these r all suggestions...u can try it out and c how it looks...i'm trying to get into the whole development/cooking of the ROMs and modifying icons for apps so if i get somewhere i can probably explain it a lil better hahahaha lol let me kno wat u think bout it
This is an experimental lockscreen I made that I would like to hear other users feedback on. It's a decepticon logo normally and when you open one of your 4 apps on the lockscreen it changes to an autobot logo
I say experimental because I think there are only 2 files you really need to change so I made the 2 files that I don't think you need to change one black and one silver lockscreen. I haven't been able to make them show, but if you can, please let me know (it could even open up possibilities on other changing screens)
File has been edited to take out the annoying gray circle when you open an app directly from the lock screen (thanks jmaher)

Screenie??
The ring you edit in fusion.apk is the unlocking ring. The ring you see when you tap a shortcut is in the idlescreen_base.apk. its called motion ring. The motion ring just appears over top of the other ring. So both rings are on the screen at the same time when u touch a shortcut. If they are two different images it will look distorted or something cause one will be ontop of the other. Unless the fusion ring is smaller than the motion ring and there isn't any transparent parts in the motion ring so it will completely cover the other one.

Unless the fusion ring is smaller than the motion ring and there isn't any transparent parts in the motion ring so it will completely cover the other one.

file location is:
/system/app/fusion.apk/assets/(bluesky/burgundy/default *same file in each of the 3 folders*)/drawable/shared.m10
/system/app/Idlescreen_Base.apk/assets/scenes/base/Lock_ring_motion.m10

Yes but how do you replace the image and then repack it? So I can replace it in 7zip

these are my instructions from another thread. It's honestly the best I can explain it:
pull out the .m10 files with 7zip and put them in seperate folders
Run m10 editor to decompile them
find the .png and replace with exact same size image with the exact same name
save the file in m10 editor (repacks that folder back into that file
(repeat for the other 3 files)
keep going up folders in 7zip until you're out of the .zip entirely, it'll ask you if you want to save each time you back out past the apk, click yes obviously
move to SD card and flash like all the rest...
*note: I keep 7zip open the entire time from start until putting it on the SD card
it will likely take you tinkering and learning it for yourself. Once you figure it out though it's a freaking breeze

sorry man, I'm not doing requests. It's more of an experiment for the greater knowledge of the community. That ring is both, if you look at the pictures, it changes. I initially tried to do it the other way, but the autobot logo would have had to have been a lot smaller to fit under the deceptacons logo
use my instructions and do it yourself. Once you figure it out, it doesn't take very tong to actually switch, just however much time you put into the image you're using... (I spent about an hour editing just the autobot logo on this one, had to get down to single pixels)

I just rename my image to the name of the ring and replace it in the folder m10 editor creates on the pc, save the file with m10 editor (that you leave open until you're completely finished), which then replace the original m10 I puled from 7zip on my pc and then move that file into the 7zip directory replacing the original
No worries i did see it changes. Legit man thanks.

Want Your Sense 3 Lockscreen's Typeface to Match Your System Font?
This is My Method
First things first. You need to make sure you have Root Explorer or an equivalent file manager with root access, as you will need Read/Write permissions for the System folder.
You will also need to obtain your desired font in TrueType format. This will be indicated by the file extension ".ttf" Unlike Windows, Android does not recognize multiple font types.
Although I can't guarantee it will work in every case, I will say that I have yet to experience any problems when I simply change the file extension of a font I wish to use (for example - "Neutratext.otf" becomes "Neutratext.ttf" by simply renaming the file.)
One last thing before I start:
DO NOT blame me if you mess up your phone! Make sure to perform a backup BEFORE you do ANYTHING else. If something doesn't go quite right you SHALL find yourself in a boot loop.
Ok, now that you've backed up your phone, use Root Explorer (or whatever your poison) to find the font you wish to use and rename it to IDENTICALLY match the following two files:
Click Here Now If You Wish to Use This Tutorial for System Fonts! Otherwise, Continue Below \/\/\/\/
HelveticaNeueLTPro35Th.ttf
HelveticaNeueOTS.ttf
Once you have renamed the files, select both and COPY/PASTE or MOVE them to:
System/fonts
The next step is to simply change the permissions of both files. In Root Explorer, You just long press on a file and select "Permissions" from the pop up menu. There will be slight variations between file managers though. Once you figure out where permissions are located, you'll want to change the permissions of both font files so that they look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now that permissions have been changed, it's time to reboot your phone. Once it's back up, you should see your new font gracing the lock screen.
This may help if you would like to adapt this post to change your system font - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16601089&postcount=3
Notes:
If you didn't notice, there are in fact, two fonts which are being replaced here. The fact is, I'm not sure if both need replacement or just one of them. The first time I tried this, I replaced both and it worked perfectly so, that's how I continue to do it. If you wish to do a little experimenting to see if we only need to do one or if we need both, feel free. I would appreciate it if you'll share your findings, so I can update the OP to reflect this.
Apparently, I also need to add that this tutorial is all based on the assumption that you are coming into it with a font which YOU have found and placed on your SD card. This font will be the one you'll be copying and renaming for placement in the System/fonts folder.
Just a heads up for you guys. Performing this mod will also change the font of your large Sense Weather Widget. This will probably be a plus to the vast majority, many will be indifferent but, for a small percentage of you, it may be a deal breaker. This note is for you.
This mod will apparently work on the Desire HD as well, with slightly different results. It seems to work just fine with the exception of the icon labels beneath the lock screen icons. They appear to be unaffected. I have no Desire HD so, I can't help you guys out much here.
Added link in OP to help simplify System Font Adaptation
Now confirmed to be working with BAMF SoaB!
BEFORE (and I'm ONLY referencing the fonts here):

Ask and ye shall receive! Here's how to adapt this for System Fonts-
The fonts you'll be replacing are:
DroidSans.ttf
DroidSans-Bold.ttf
You CAN use the same font for both of these but, personally, I prefer to use a normal or thin version of my preferred font, as well as a bold version.
Make sure you name them EXACTLY as the original files are named.
That, as they say, is that! We've pretty much turned this into a dual purpose tutorial because that was the only difference between this tutorial and one for system fonts.
But, hold up there, Sparky! You're almost there but, you do need to refer back to the OP so, you can tie up the loose ends. Pick up at the "changing permissions" part.
Edit: DO keep in mind that apps have made it a little "easier" to change system fonts. You can simply download an app such as Font Changer or Font Switcher. I prefer my method because it's quite easy, doesn't add another app to your drawer and makes you just a little more comfortable with the inner workings of your phone.

Btw ur doesn't say where to copy the files from. All the fonts ur talking about are already in system/fonts... The permissions are already the same as what ur talking about ... I appreciate the tutorial but it doesn't really make sense.

So question, right now I am using the stock font from synergy, if I want to bring this over to my lockscreen which 2 font files do I take from system/fonts?
Is it just one font from system/fonts I take and rename twice ?
Sorry If this is clear but I am probably just confused lol.
Thanks for the tutorial !

Yep! That's correct! In order for the Synergy font to be used as a System font, it must bear the two "DroidSans/DroidSans-Bold" names. However, I really don't think there is a need for the specifics of your above illustration. What I mean is, You don't have to use both of the DS fonts. You can use either of them for both Helvetica fonts, if you like. For example:
"DroidSans.ttf" can be used for both/either "HelveticaNeueLTPro35Th.ttf" and/or "HelveticaNeueOTS.ttf"
It shouldn't make any difference, really. I hope that isn't too confusing. Having read it back to myself, I think it may be.
see im not the only one! hahahh I just used font switcher... much easier and i removed it after i changed the fonts. done.

This is a full theme that's ambition is simple; turning all instances of color thru-out the entire ROM, including many common user apps, to various shades of blue. This project will be on-going; as I get better at theming so will the theme get better. I make no claims of complete originality, as some images have been swyped from other themes (if u see ur work, please claim it so that i can credit or pull it) That said, most work is my own (in as much as modifications of someone else's work -HTC's- can be called ones "own" ) I also need to thank Gunthermic, whom I continue to bug daily with my incessant questions, lol. Thnks gun! Also can't forget about TommyTomatoe, whom has helped me tremendously in the last two weeks. (Thnx to him I can again edit .9.png's, and xml's as well) Also bad4u6669, he's also helped me on many occasions (actually this theme is kinda inspired by bad4u's work on Epidemic ....thnks bro!) .. ***Edit: thnx to bad4u6669 I am now able to theme all of Sense (.....as long as he keeps building my mods, lol!) ...and last but not least a special Thnx to McLabia for giving me a hassle free place to host and advertise my work. I am very, very grateful brother!

Lol, cool, at least its just the calender. I'll look at it in a bit.
Yeah, I'm at a stand-still with that dropdown. I'm just waiting for some bright idea ....or gunthermic to figure out. I gotta talk to him again.
Wut about the 'menu's? U mean the getting all the icons to match? That's proven to be one of the more challenging things. I've themed all those icons that those should be drawing from.... Ima take another look tonight. I'll definitely get them. Just takes time ....it bugs me too. I think its just this new Sense. I'll ask gun.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Or do u mean inverting them like the I plan to do w/ the dropdown? Cuz that's actually next!
That's why I haven't been working hard to make all those icons match. They'll need changed anyway for the dark bg ....coarse I plan on doing two versions of those ......like most things so I'll havta to both anyway
.....yeah, I still got a TON of work to do!
Haha I can only imagine the work involved, i'm sure its quite intense.
I was referring to when you hit menu and all apps, notifications, personalize, wallpaper, ringtones and settings comes up in the little "6 spaced grid".
Sorry probably have terminology all wrong ! Either way I know it takes time, just excited about what's to come because this adds alot of class to this already nicely themed wrong already on 1st revision.
BTW I tried messing with both htc calender widget apk's and couldn't get it to work again.
Not that I know much beyond moving things to system/apps and changing permissions lol.
That looks Stoopd SECXEE Bruh..More Blue w/icons, Contacts and Dialer pad would be ideal.

Try pulling 'Calendar.apk' from the theme zip and reflash. U won't notice a difference without that one anyway. Just put on ur desktop, open with 7zip, go to /system/app/Calendar.apk and delete.
If that doesn't work ...or u just don't feel like it, I'll have an update soon. By morning prolly

I'd try deleting the first two calendar APKs first, but like i said, ill be doing that ltr tonight or this morning.
If u just delete Calendar.apk and report bak ull potentially save me a bunch of work ....but I know it sux waiting thru whole that flashing so if u just wanna wait, that's cool too

Yes, I know 'where' u mean. I'm sorry, I don't understand 'what' u want done.
I'll say this: I plan on making both a dark and light version ....also one with blue highlights; dark or light, I haven't decided ...maybe both. I also may make completely different icons rather than modify the existing ones.
If u guys can be more specific as to what u'd like to see in the theme, then I could better accommodate u.
If u all are something u like in another theme that u'd like to see here, please try to provide screenshots or links so that I see exactly wut u mean. I can't say whether I'll use it or whether it'll be exactly the same. I like to make things my own, but I'm also not one for changing sumthin just to be different either. If there's no room for improvement, then I'll keep it as-is.
And if anyone has work that they've done that they think would look good here, please post it and I'll see about incorporating it or atleast adding as an add-on
Just something darker really, I love the black menu from cm7 and from DH, it doesnt have to be black though.
As far as the calender widget I think I already tried everything I could do apk wise in an attempt to fix it. It's no biggy though man, I can wait

No, I just fixed it ....hold on a min, I don't like the color tho. I'll post it in about 45mins
It's just a new 3d cal, that's all
See here its up n workin:
I'm decompiling now so I can change some xml's to get it all blue. Either the red in the calender picture up top is controlled by an xml or its not in the apk ...either way, I'll get the little bastard
I'm new to android, and I'm trying to learn how to theme. I've got some of the basics down, but I'm still a little overwhelmed as to what tools are best to use for modifying which items.
Currently, I am running a CM7 ROM on a Samsung Vibrant. I'd like to theme the google search widget. What's the best way to go about doing this? Is this something that can be done with Metamorph? What about Theme Chooser? Does something like Zipthemer come into play with what I'm trying to do?
This seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to do, but I haven't been able to make it work. I'm able to modify other widgets like the music player, but I can't seem to get this google search widget to change.
I'd really appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks in advance!
I haven't been able to get it to work through metamorph, so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just not possible through that method. Any help with this?
Could try using apkmanager?
What exactly is it your wanting to do to it?

As I understand it, apkmanager is used to modify then repackage an existing apk file. Is that accurate? If so, I don't think that will work for me since I can't re-install google search (the package won't re-install over the existing application and there's no uninstall option).
As to what I'm trying to do....right now I'm just trying to make ANY change to the google search widget. I am really using this as a learning tool, so the specific changes don't matter, I just want to learn how to do it.

Instead of trying to install normally, you can just drop the apk in /system/app. Using Root Explorer, you may want to back up the original Google Search apk. On my phone it's named "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk", yours may be named differently. Either move the original to your SD card or replace the apk extension with .bak then move the new one. You'll need to mount system as r/w, in Root Explorer the button is near the top. The modded version has to have the same name as the original, so copy the apk to /system/app and rename it if necessary. Long-press on the apk and select permissions. Set the permissions to rw-r--r-- (owner = read, write checked; group = read checked; other = read checked).
Then reboot and you should be good.
Root Explorer is a paid app, but an indispensable tool if you're going to be modding system files. It's also a great file explorer, and well worth the money. However, if you don't want to pay, ES File Explorer is free and has a root level file explorer - you have to enable root access in settings. I'm not sure how to mount r/w with ES, but there are other free apps that will do so if the option isn't built in.

Hi,
Since ur on cm 7 rom look and learn how to create themes and mod n install themes over stock system application without all the troubles.
Otherwise when u mod any system apk, application signature will change and updates from market will not even install over different signature application.
Alternative is to mod application and install via xrecovery package. With stock signature. This is little tech but not a big deal too.
I suggest theme option that's why cm7 came with theme option to mod apps.
Cheers
Thanks plainjane, I can try replacing the package as a last resort, but I'm hoping to find a cleaner way to do it.
Shiwantha, so I can use Theme Choser for this? That's what I was originally trying to use, but I couldn't get it to work. As long as I know that it's possible, I at least know what to focus on.
Thanks to all for the responses!

Hi, it can be done in theme chooser, I have done it
I made my theme chooser app with a great guide found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964391 and a lot of patience...
I did find it a bit annoying, as the ROM im using came with two seach widgets, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk and QuickSearchBox.apk ... So when I tried editing the widget (with theme chooser) it wasnt the right one! So maybe try both if you have both!
Any how, yes it is possible... Theme chooser may be the easiest way. It is possible with ApkTool/ApkManager. Apk Manager might help as it can push the app to /system via adb, and Apk Manager lets you keep the signature if it is a system app, but it may also corrupt it...
Hope this helps you, Matt
If u figure out how to theme the google search widget i would love to see a blue one. Ive been looking all over for one

If you like dark blue...
This one I created for my X10 Honeycomb theme some times back. its planned to install via xrecovery for X10 froyo then.........
Cheers.
So in case anybody was wondering, I think I see what the problem is...both apktool and apk manager don't seem to be decompiling/recompiling properly. I didn't notice with apktool, but apk manager gives me errors when I try to decompile.
I'm guessing it's because I have to reference something from my samsung device in order to decompile properly, but I'm not sure what.
The best mod that you can make for the google search widget is to delete it! Your phone has a search button for a reason! Why do you want to waste your home screen space? No, really, I really am curious... Flame away and prove me wrong, please lol

HAH! Well...mostly because I've only had the phone (and this is my first android) for about 4 days and I didn't realize there's a search button on it.
But that aside, I really just want to learn how to theme the different aspects of the phone, and I just picked the google widget as my first project cause it was there.

Lol well as a starting point for learning to theme, you picked a good one, but just use it as a stepping stone! If there's one thing I would delete from Android's existence it would be that search widget lol more tips n tricks at www.DimeDroidHQ.com
