This is an experimental lockscreen I made that I would like to hear other users feedback on. It's a decepticon logo normally and when you open one of your 4 apps on the lockscreen it changes to an autobot logo
I say experimental because I think there are only 2 files you really need to change so I made the 2 files that I don't think you need to change one black and one silver lockscreen. I haven't been able to make them show, but if you can, please let me know (it could even open up possibilities on other changing screens)
File has been edited to take out the annoying gray circle when you open an app directly from the lock screen (thanks jmaher)

As always, flash at your own risk and make a backup
I wipe cache before I install anything, so I always recommend it
Also, I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4. It may work on other ROMs but I dont know
anything I forgot, just ask and I'll try to answer the best I can...

I'll test it for u! I had thought about experimenting with the same kind of idea, but I've been too busy filling requests.

[Edit]: Works great! I would look at changing 0x00006cdb.dat.png and making it completely transparent so it doesn't cover up the autobot.

I can't ever find any .png files when looking at the stock ring.
I would try this out but I love my Panthers ring.

I believe it's in Default\drawable\shared.m10. I edited it on one of my first LSR's and have used it as a template for all my others, but I'm pretty sure it's in default.

Screenie??
The ring you edit in fusion.apk is the unlocking ring. The ring you see when you tap a shortcut is in the idlescreen_base.apk. its called motion ring. The motion ring just appears over top of the other ring. So both rings are on the screen at the same time when u touch a shortcut. If they are two different images it will look distorted or something cause one will be ontop of the other. Unless the fusion ring is smaller than the motion ring and there isn't any transparent parts in the motion ring so it will completely cover the other one.

these are my instructions from another thread. It's honestly the best I can explain it:
pull out the .m10 files with 7zip and put them in seperate folders
Run m10 editor to decompile them
find the .png and replace with exact same size image with the exact same name
save the file in m10 editor (repacks that folder back into that file
(repeat for the other 3 files)
keep going up folders in 7zip until you're out of the .zip entirely, it'll ask you if you want to save each time you back out past the apk, click yes obviously
move to SD card and flash like all the rest...
*note: I keep 7zip open the entire time from start until putting it on the SD card
it will likely take you tinkering and learning it for yourself. Once you figure it out though it's a freaking breeze

sorry man, I'm not doing requests. It's more of an experiment for the greater knowledge of the community. That ring is both, if you look at the pictures, it changes. I initially tried to do it the other way, but the autobot logo would have had to have been a lot smaller to fit under the deceptacons logo
use my instructions and do it yourself. Once you figure it out, it doesn't take very tong to actually switch, just however much time you put into the image you're using... (I spent about an hour editing just the autobot logo on this one, had to get down to single pixels)

I just rename my image to the name of the ring and replace it in the folder m10 editor creates on the pc, save the file with m10 editor (that you leave open until you're completely finished), which then replace the original m10 I puled from 7zip on my pc and then move that file into the 7zip directory replacing the original
No worries i did see it changes. Legit man thanks.

I remembered doing this on my samsung moment and thought I'd try it on Epic and it works for fonts, maybe we can figure out how to do themes as well in the future.
Here is a link to the original thread by Stericson: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329 about the app called MetaMorph for more detail, the general idea is to have theme/font files on the sdcard and the app will install them for you with a reboot to complete the process.
Here is a .zip to try it with: MyFonts
note: I have only tried 3 of these and one was a bit too large. This won't hurt your phone it just won't look right. The stock font is in it for restoring if you wish to.
Stick the .zip on your sdcard
Download MetaMorph from the market(both free and donate versions available)
When you first start the app it will do a system check and if you don't have busybox installed it will tell you. If it says you don't there are free/donate verisons on the market as well so go grab it and install it. I installed it with the default settings.
Now open MetaMorph again and after the checks select Unzip/Extract new theme. None will show but thats ok, hit the blue arrow on the bottom. Now scroll to MyFonts.zip and select it. After it extracts you will see a screen describing the details, hit close. You will see a list of fonts now that all begin with SubTheme:
Select the one you want to apply and then hit Apply it! and Continue? It will then ask you to reboot but that isn't working for our phone so just hit no and do a manual reboot.
After the reboot your font will be applied.
The pick existing theme function shows the fonts but they all show as empty for some reason. No worries, use the Unzip/Extract option and either update/replace option and they will show again. Not sure why you have to extract them every time but it still works this way.
You can add and delete fonts from the sample I provided if you are adventurous. Just unzip it and take a peek at the structure inside as well as the xml control file.
Just thought I'd share this for those who are lazy like me yet always trying to change the look of there phone throughout the day...or am I the only one that does this?
If anyone knows how to use this more properly or anything I've missed I will update this post, thanks.

Good idea, I'm too busy today but tonight I'll see what I can do. If anyone else has the time I would appreciate the help. You can simply unzip the file and inside you will see all the different fonts by name. When you open one up you will see two ttf files, one is bold and one is standard. Click on the ttf file and it will show a preview.

+1 I would like this also.
Very nice! My personal opinion the "Russel Squared" font looks the most "Android-ish" if you will. Of course thats just my opinion. Also it fits very nicely, looks good in the app drawer, messaging, etc.
Anyways way to make it easy for the noobs. I personally always extract the zip first, and use "Pick existing theme" then find the XML of the theme. That way I dont have a zipped and non zipped sitting on my SD. Its a little tiny file I know I'm just anal
In any case though you made it simple for all of us to add some more variety to our themes with utmost simplicity Thanx!
wow, works very good, thank you
Is there a way to add our own fonts?
thanx.
Just Love it!!!

nope, you're not the only one..... this is exactly what i was looking for. the only thing is, the app goes thru the whole process, but when i reboot, the font isn't chnged. not a hige deal, but i would like to see what these fonts look like on my phone.
Raider I changed the fonts in a theme and it killed the rom because it looked for the details loaded into the ttf to match the name of the file. Example is if I found a font I like and on the phone it's androidsansserrif and I just rename *.ttf the fonts description was still the original fonts name and therefore the phone would stop. Does this method bypass having to use a font creator to change the description or did you have to change that for all of them. I'm running dk28 dont know if you are or not

I wanted to be able to get the themers to use mm as well, so I been experimenting with it and there are a few limitations that are a killer.
500 file write max. Most in depth themes will be two or 3 separate flashes .
framework has to be last because it causes a reboot and sometimes takes 2-3 flashes to take everything
On top of that, we have technically two frameworks. We would be doing a lot of support in our threads. Also it can't theme market apps it claims, I hope it can, cause that would still add an update zip for all of them.
I wanted to get stericson and some of us themers to work together on getting some of these hurtles behind us.

I seem to remember on the Hero this not being superior to any ROM cooker/themer changing the update.zip b/c of lots of FC's. I *thought* this was better for stock users but I don't know, I remember themers changing fonts through other methods though...
It actually work wonders for small flashes, either fonts or just a few pictures. Its also easier for testing an image and you have to keep flashing over and over. As far as fcs and all the only problems I get are errors in my code. It's entire themes that give it hell .

Heres a pic of the first frame. The "eye" rotates a quarter turn, then rotates back. Its pretty simple

UPDATE: Stock systemui.apk uploaded. Flash to remove animations and have stock status bar returned.
[MOD][EF02] Spinning Eye Animated Status Bar: a baseline test
Let me take a minute to explain exactly what it is I'm doing:
One of the major issues that I noticed right away with these status bar images is the fact that they're not modular in regards to the end users; rather, they are another method of themeing that are applied to an apk. What this means, and what this is relevant to, is that they're not easily ported between themes.
A for instance: user is running marcusant v7 rom, which is themed nearly entirely red and black. But this user likes the spinning eye animation I uploaded, which uses the stock systemui.apk (green and black). Obviously the status bar won't match the rest of the theme.
So at this point, there's only two reasonable choices: the author of the animation has to theme systemui.apk with marcusants theme (remember, we can't just modify v7s systemui.apk since its already themed, and thus won't compile), or marcusant has to incorporate the animation himself and release it as an addon.
Ultimately, this restricts the end users choices. Because its unreasonable to expect either the animation author or the themer/dev to incorporate every possible choice. In addition, the common xda end user is unable and unwilling to decompile, theme, and compile the apk themselves (let's face it: it's tedious work if you don't know what you're doing). But in the name of choice and customization, the end user should be able to have any animation/theme combo he/she desires.
So this is an attempt to standardize a new, animation friendly systemui.apk. The objective is to have ALL themers and devs use this new apk in place of the stock one. Obviously, it needs to compile correctly (which it currently does) so that they can theme it. It also needs to incorporate an effective and easy way for the end user to add any released animation they want.
The method I came up with is this:
1. The themer/dev packs their themed systemui.apk in a flashable .zip and releases it along side their theme/ROM.
2. Animation author doesn't need to do anything other than make sure their animation frame names comply with the standard.
3. End user downloads animation of their choice, and the systemui.apk flashable from their theme/ROM of choice. Opening up both archives side by side, all it will take is a drag and drop of 4 components.
I know compliance is a tough thing to sell and get everyone on board with, especially when it involves an extra step or two, but themers/devs should look at the compliance objectively: the vast majority of effort involved is done by the end user. The only thing a themer/dev would need to do is post a simple systemui.apk flashable. By me releasing a master copy, any other effort on the themer/dev side should be eliminated.
So here's where we stand: master copy decompiles/compiles and flashes correctly, so its ready to theme. However one user attempted the animation method (drag and drop) and it broke.
I think what broke it is the fact that there's no pulldown_animxxx.png's in the original zip; thus, adding a new element rather than simply replacing one causes the apk to fail (I *think* its because the pngs need referenced in public.xml, which happens automatically when an apk is compiled; the purpose of this project however is to enable the end user to effectively avoid decompiling/compiling)
The only solution that comes to mind is adding "placeholder" pngs of a small size (~1kb) to the master apk, but not reference them in pulldown.xml so that it still retains the stock sytemui.apk appearance and functionality. I don't think this will prevent the .apk from decompiling/compiling correctly (meaning it should be themeing ready), however this seems to be a very brutish solution, and not an elegant one as I would like it to be.
Anyone with any thoughts, suggestions, or questions about this, feel free to post here or PM me.
More info and current download [BROKEN]:
***caution! May not work! If it doesn't, systemui.apk will FC and you'll need to flash either another animation or the stock status bar in the OP!***
Instructions:
Download here http://www.mediafire.com/?te9qc780gi6mou5
Open .zip up in 7zip (or winRar), then navigate to /system/app and open systemui.apk
Then in another window, do the same steps to open systemui.apk from the animation .zip in the OP (or another one that you might have for GB)
With the windows side by side, you'll need to drag and drop 4 items from the animated systemui to the on you just downloaded, placing them in the same folders where you are dragging from. Make sure to hit "yes" to replace files:
1. Pulldown.xml in /drawable
2. All the animation frames in /drawable-hdpi (should be named pulldown_animxxx.png or something)
3. Shade_bg.png in /drawable-hdpi
4. Status_bar_tracking.xml in /layout
Back out of all the windows. If you did this in winrar, make sure you confirm to update the original archive when you close the window that has systemui.apk open
Flash! And let me know if it works!
NOTE: if it doesn't work, try deleting the corresponding files you are replacing first, then dragging the ones from the animation over. PLEASE let me know if you had to do this, but try the other method first.
HEY! WHAT IS THIS?
This is a modified stock systemui.apk that contains a modified status_bar_tracking.xml and has pulldown.xml added. It does not have an animation in it. Rather, it is an attempt at making a standard systemui.apk for themers and devs to use in order to make pulldown animations more portable between themes.
If this phase of testing goes well, ill post complete details in the OP.
Other findings from my experimentation. Just trying to see how involved we can make this.
squshy 7 said:
ok so after some quick testing, it appears that the number of frames for animations are limited by the number of images in drawable-hdpi, not the number of frames listed in pulldown.xml nor the sum total size (in kB) of frames. Reasoning:
Spinning eye animation consisted of 30 frames spinning in one direction, then 28 frames spinning in the opposite direction. The second set of 28 were simply duplicates of frames 2 through 29, renamed to be 31 through 58. pulldown.xml was written simply as frames 1 though 58, with each frame at 33ms intervals. This configuration caused SystemUI.apk to FC upon flashing. Logcat dump indicates error "bitmap too large for VM allowance" (paraphrased).
In the next configuration of the animation, I removed frames 31 through 58, and edited pulldown.xml to play frames 1 through 30 then 29 through 2, same 33ms interval (which honestly, in the name of efficient developing, should have been my configuration to begin with since the frames were identical and the master set consisted of 30 anyway. but its ok because it helped me discover a limit ). Upon flashing, animation was successful.
As I stated previously, my very first tinkering with this mod was to port the Red Nexus boot animation, which consisted of 49 frames. The size of each picture, and the sum size of all pictures, was MUCH greater than my initial Spinning Eye animation which FCed, so size should be considered irrelevant (except when thinking about performance; the status bar obviously became very laggy).
So, what does this tell us? We know that picture filesize shouldn't matter (can't exceed system partition size obviously), there doesn't appear to be a limit on the number of frame references in pulldown.xml, and that the limit exists in the number of unique frames created in drawable-hdpi.
As I said, I know 49 images will work, and that at 58 it's broken, but I haven't had time to increase the number of pictures by increments of 1 to find the exact number. So I'd say keep it under 50 lol. You can, however, repeat frames, seemingly as much as you'd like.

Want Your Sense 3 Lockscreen's Typeface to Match Your System Font?
This is My Method
First things first. You need to make sure you have Root Explorer or an equivalent file manager with root access, as you will need Read/Write permissions for the System folder.
You will also need to obtain your desired font in TrueType format. This will be indicated by the file extension ".ttf" Unlike Windows, Android does not recognize multiple font types.
Although I can't guarantee it will work in every case, I will say that I have yet to experience any problems when I simply change the file extension of a font I wish to use (for example - "Neutratext.otf" becomes "Neutratext.ttf" by simply renaming the file.)
One last thing before I start:
DO NOT blame me if you mess up your phone! Make sure to perform a backup BEFORE you do ANYTHING else. If something doesn't go quite right you SHALL find yourself in a boot loop.
Ok, now that you've backed up your phone, use Root Explorer (or whatever your poison) to find the font you wish to use and rename it to IDENTICALLY match the following two files:
Click Here Now If You Wish to Use This Tutorial for System Fonts! Otherwise, Continue Below \/\/\/\/
HelveticaNeueLTPro35Th.ttf
HelveticaNeueOTS.ttf
Once you have renamed the files, select both and COPY/PASTE or MOVE them to:
System/fonts
The next step is to simply change the permissions of both files. In Root Explorer, You just long press on a file and select "Permissions" from the pop up menu. There will be slight variations between file managers though. Once you figure out where permissions are located, you'll want to change the permissions of both font files so that they look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now that permissions have been changed, it's time to reboot your phone. Once it's back up, you should see your new font gracing the lock screen.
This may help if you would like to adapt this post to change your system font - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16601089&postcount=3
Notes:
If you didn't notice, there are in fact, two fonts which are being replaced here. The fact is, I'm not sure if both need replacement or just one of them. The first time I tried this, I replaced both and it worked perfectly so, that's how I continue to do it. If you wish to do a little experimenting to see if we only need to do one or if we need both, feel free. I would appreciate it if you'll share your findings, so I can update the OP to reflect this.
Apparently, I also need to add that this tutorial is all based on the assumption that you are coming into it with a font which YOU have found and placed on your SD card. This font will be the one you'll be copying and renaming for placement in the System/fonts folder.
Just a heads up for you guys. Performing this mod will also change the font of your large Sense Weather Widget. This will probably be a plus to the vast majority, many will be indifferent but, for a small percentage of you, it may be a deal breaker. This note is for you.
This mod will apparently work on the Desire HD as well, with slightly different results. It seems to work just fine with the exception of the icon labels beneath the lock screen icons. They appear to be unaffected. I have no Desire HD so, I can't help you guys out much here.
Added link in OP to help simplify System Font Adaptation
Now confirmed to be working with BAMF SoaB!
BEFORE (and I'm ONLY referencing the fonts here):

Ask and ye shall receive! Here's how to adapt this for System Fonts-
The fonts you'll be replacing are:
DroidSans.ttf
DroidSans-Bold.ttf
You CAN use the same font for both of these but, personally, I prefer to use a normal or thin version of my preferred font, as well as a bold version.
Make sure you name them EXACTLY as the original files are named.
That, as they say, is that! We've pretty much turned this into a dual purpose tutorial because that was the only difference between this tutorial and one for system fonts.
But, hold up there, Sparky! You're almost there but, you do need to refer back to the OP so, you can tie up the loose ends. Pick up at the "changing permissions" part.
Edit: DO keep in mind that apps have made it a little "easier" to change system fonts. You can simply download an app such as Font Changer or Font Switcher. I prefer my method because it's quite easy, doesn't add another app to your drawer and makes you just a little more comfortable with the inner workings of your phone.

Is it just one font from system/fonts I take and rename twice ?
Sorry If this is clear but I am probably just confused lol.
Thanks for the tutorial !

Yep! That's correct! In order for the Synergy font to be used as a System font, it must bear the two "DroidSans/DroidSans-Bold" names. However, I really don't think there is a need for the specifics of your above illustration. What I mean is, You don't have to use both of the DS fonts. You can use either of them for both Helvetica fonts, if you like. For example:
"DroidSans.ttf" can be used for both/either "HelveticaNeueLTPro35Th.ttf" and/or "HelveticaNeueOTS.ttf"
It shouldn't make any difference, really. I hope that isn't too confusing. Having read it back to myself, I think it may be.
see im not the only one! hahahh I just used font switcher... much easier and i removed it after i changed the fonts. done.
I'm new to android, and I'm trying to learn how to theme. I've got some of the basics down, but I'm still a little overwhelmed as to what tools are best to use for modifying which items.
Currently, I am running a CM7 ROM on a Samsung Vibrant. I'd like to theme the google search widget. What's the best way to go about doing this? Is this something that can be done with Metamorph? What about Theme Chooser? Does something like Zipthemer come into play with what I'm trying to do?
This seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to do, but I haven't been able to make it work. I'm able to modify other widgets like the music player, but I can't seem to get this google search widget to change.
I'd really appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks in advance!
I haven't been able to get it to work through metamorph, so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just not possible through that method. Any help with this?
Could try using apkmanager?
What exactly is it your wanting to do to it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
As I understand it, apkmanager is used to modify then repackage an existing apk file. Is that accurate? If so, I don't think that will work for me since I can't re-install google search (the package won't re-install over the existing application and there's no uninstall option).
As to what I'm trying to do....right now I'm just trying to make ANY change to the google search widget. I am really using this as a learning tool, so the specific changes don't matter, I just want to learn how to do it.

Instead of trying to install normally, you can just drop the apk in /system/app. Using Root Explorer, you may want to back up the original Google Search apk. On my phone it's named "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk", yours may be named differently. Either move the original to your SD card or replace the apk extension with .bak then move the new one. You'll need to mount system as r/w, in Root Explorer the button is near the top. The modded version has to have the same name as the original, so copy the apk to /system/app and rename it if necessary. Long-press on the apk and select permissions. Set the permissions to rw-r--r-- (owner = read, write checked; group = read checked; other = read checked).
Then reboot and you should be good.
Root Explorer is a paid app, but an indispensable tool if you're going to be modding system files. It's also a great file explorer, and well worth the money. However, if you don't want to pay, ES File Explorer is free and has a root level file explorer - you have to enable root access in settings. I'm not sure how to mount r/w with ES, but there are other free apps that will do so if the option isn't built in.

Hi,
Since ur on cm 7 rom look and learn how to create themes and mod n install themes over stock system application without all the troubles.
Otherwise when u mod any system apk, application signature will change and updates from market will not even install over different signature application.
Alternative is to mod application and install via xrecovery package. With stock signature. This is little tech but not a big deal too.
I suggest theme option that's why cm7 came with theme option to mod apps.
Cheers
Thanks plainjane, I can try replacing the package as a last resort, but I'm hoping to find a cleaner way to do it.
Shiwantha, so I can use Theme Choser for this? That's what I was originally trying to use, but I couldn't get it to work. As long as I know that it's possible, I at least know what to focus on.
Thanks to all for the responses!

Hi, it can be done in theme chooser, I have done it
I made my theme chooser app with a great guide found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964391 and a lot of patience...
I did find it a bit annoying, as the ROM im using came with two seach widgets, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk and QuickSearchBox.apk ... So when I tried editing the widget (with theme chooser) it wasnt the right one! So maybe try both if you have both!
Any how, yes it is possible... Theme chooser may be the easiest way. It is possible with ApkTool/ApkManager. Apk Manager might help as it can push the app to /system via adb, and Apk Manager lets you keep the signature if it is a system app, but it may also corrupt it...
Hope this helps you, Matt

So in case anybody was wondering, I think I see what the problem is...both apktool and apk manager don't seem to be decompiling/recompiling properly. I didn't notice with apktool, but apk manager gives me errors when I try to decompile.
I'm guessing it's because I have to reference something from my samsung device in order to decompile properly, but I'm not sure what.

I am looking for the greyisch texture on the right part of the settings app. Since its being used in some 3rd party apps I thought it should be in the framework-res.apk and I changed a whole lot of images, but that texture never was found.
Since its not the first time I ask this question, just FYI of course i have the holo background themed and the dark dialog files too. My Power menu is black, but I just cant find it. editbox_dropdown_background_dark.9.png is my guess
For the settings app, looks like someone just made an image filled with #282828 (just like the pop ups and menus) and used it for the background. The background is located in /framework-res/drawable-nodpi and should be named background_holo_dark or something like that.

Yes I believe its a png for the exact same reasons. I worked quite a bit with 9.pngs and managed to get a lot changed with them. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Could you make the 9.png and I will try that? Maybe its something extremely stupid I am missing.

I attached my current framework-res.apk which is the one I am currently working on. I just dont know, where else to look -.-

Can't do it today. But try this: decompile the app, draw a red line over the gray, compile and flash it.
I can do it tomorrow morning after work if you want.

Yes thank you, I would greatly appreciate that. My PC died on me a week back and I get my new one on Wednesday. Thats way i cant use the full Android SDK right now.
I had to recreate the 9.pngs by renaming the original ones to blabla.png and then change it via photoshop. Then using the draw9patcher and then the 9png converter. Worked ok for me up until now and the images appear to be working, but I am not sure, if that might cause trouble with some 9.pngs

how should the image look? I can compile it, but can´t test.
I try a transparent one and a red one, so you can test, if it´s the right one.
let me know, if it works. Transparent is attached too. but you don´t see it

yes thank you^^
The end result should be a solid dark background. So if its really this one, then if the background is already black, then making it either black or transparent schould do the trick

Ok at first I flashed your framework-res.apk and it ****ed up my system^^ I reflashed my rom, extracted your red image and flashed it with the original framework of my rom, but sadly it didnt change the background.
I tried it with the transparent one too and still no change. I searched most of my phones app to find what we changed, but I couldnt find the red file anywhere.

mmh, then it compiles not correct. thats the ICS bug with apktool.
and this image is really strange! when I looked at r screen and compared it with the edit_box....png, it looks the same.
I have no idea, where to look now?
