I cannot figure out how to get the front speakers to activate, it only seems to play through the tiny little speaker on the back.
there aren't any speakers at the front of the phone, the grill on either side its just part of the phones design.
There are definately stereo speakers on the front, one at the top and one at the bottom under the grills. There is also a third speaker on the back, yes three in all!!
I have done extensive sound listening tests to confirm this and it is most noticable if you turn Dolby Mobile on in the Sound Enhancer section which gives a better stereo separation effect. You really have to play music on the handset to hear all three speakers.
The front stereo speakers are not listed in any of the spec I have seen but this is a complete bonus as far as I am concerned. It will even be a huge benefit for sat nav applications guidance voice when they become available.

Maybe sounds simply escapes through those grills on the phone, sound that comes from the ONE speaker in the back of the phone?
It could be sound spill from the rear speaker but I am sure it is not. There have been various online reviews of this handset that state there are stereo speakers on the front of the HD7.
I realise the rear speaker is certainly at a higher volume than the front ones but if you cover the rear one up you get some sound through the top and bottom front ones. I suppose only HTC will be able to confirm or otherwise.

It does have front speakers but they are only active if you have dolby/srs turned on.

I have one but can not find any settings about Dolby. Only sound is from the rear speaker and its quiet compared with other phones.
Russ
Go to one of the HTC applications called sound enhancer and this is where you find Dolby Mobile SRS Surround etc.
I am very happy with the sound coming from the front speakers even although they are quieter than the rear.

Sorry if I have to disappoint some of the readers here, but there are definitly NO STEREO SPEAKERS located at the front of the HD7 device. So unless the people here who claim they have speakers have a totally different hardware version of the HD7 (highly unlikely), they do not have speakers either. As it was said before it could be sound spill from the rear speaker.
I have to admit that from the front design of the HD7 you could very well assume that there are stereo speakers built in, and there are even reviews around that state this. I wonder how bad a review writer must be to mislead their readers by just writing down their wishful fantasies/third party information.
Overall I was rather disappointed by the built in rear speaker. Choosing a different "Sound Enhancer" setting (Dolby Mobile/SRS Enhancement) does slightly improve the sound quality but no extra speakers get activated.
As you can clearly see by looking at the attached image of my disassembled HD7, there is nothing behind the bottom sound grill - it is just a design element.
Well that certainly is proof indeed, cannot argue with that.
Odd, but here is HTC's official reply to me in an email yesterday -

Yes HTC HD7 has the dual speakers either side of the screen.

Wow, that is interesting indeed. It is not HTC's style to offer devices with different hardware specs and the same name (besides Memory of course). So unless someone comes up with some evidence pics I have to assume that this guy at HTC doesn't have a friggin idea what he's talking about.

haha idk, they thought they could get away with that lie? Nevertheless, the speaker isn't that bad on the phone.
Yeah, I just received my HD7 today and after enabling SRS/Dolby, didn't notice any sound from the bottom front speaker at all. Wish there was a speaker though.
I'm not sure about SRS speakers, but to those saying it's just spill through...there HAS to be a front speaker in order to hear a phone call. So there is definitely one speaker on the front at least...right?

I just bought a N1 recently, and am loving it. However, this one issue bugs me to no end.
During calls with my girlfriend, she always complains of my voice being too soft, as if I'm talking from far away. The only solution I've found so far is to cup my hands in front of the mic, or to just speak louder. This is annoying, as I never had this problem with my ancient Sony Ericsson K750i.
I've been looking for an app/way to increase my microphone gain, to no avail.
So..
1. Does anyone else have this problem?
2. Is there a way to increase microphone gain on the nexus one?
Some help would be much appreciated here. Thank you you. =)
I bet this may be a hardware problem, maybe one of your two Mics is not working. I don't have any issues, and I've even left myself messages to hear the phone's sound quality, and its very clear.
The only time I experienced what you describe is when I use the wired head set and the wire is not plugged in all the way which makes the Mic fail. Then it sounds exactly like you said, which makes me very much think its a broken Mic hardware.
Thanks for the reply roger.
Thing is, it's not that i'm VERY soft, just a little too soft for good hearing. If i make it a point to put the mic as close to my mouth as i can it's alright.
The wishful side of me is adamant that it's a normal problem, and just a little extra mic gain would solve it prettily. Now all I need to do is find that app.
RMA-ing the thing isn't the nicest of solutions, because i live in Malaysia, and HTC Malaysia doesn't support the phone. I'll have to get it sent to HTC Singapore, and do the necessary there. No joy.
If you guys have a lead on what to look for I'll be most thankful. =)
There is no thing you're looking for, and it's not a "normal problem", this problem shouldn't exist. The problem is most likely in dual-mic noise-canceling setup, as RogerPodacter wrote above. The only thing you could try is cancel the noise cancellation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700958
Yeah I don't know then. Like I said, I've plugged in my wired headset so it was not all the way inserted, which disables one or both of the Mics or something. And people say I sound like I'm in a tin can or like really far away and faint. When I push the plug all the way in it returns to normal.
So the first thing I thought of was a problem with the Mic. However only you can tell if you think its your low voice. Maybe you can try leaving yourself a few voice messages at various distances from your mouth then listen to them yourself and judge the quality to see what's going on.
Yea, good ideas roger, jack. I'll follow your suggestions, hopefully they'll solve my problem.
Meanwhile, thanks much for your help. =) you've been awesome.
It may be a microphone issue - my first N1 had problems with the microphone where the other party on the line would only hear digital noise or it would be inaudible what I was saying.
BUT I am now on my 4th replacement and something that everybody, who I talk to on that phone, agrees with is the bad sound quality / microphone quality on the phone. They all say that I am really far away as or it sounds like I am speaking into a tin can. This is across all 4 replacements.
If I use a different phone, they will say "ugh what happened, I can suddenly hear you as if you are standing next to me"
Funny, just about any Nexus review on the net, and just about any of my colleagues using it, are saying the opposite - the call clarity and sound on the other side is excellent, especially in noisy areas, where noise cancellation kicks in. I guess they're all blinded by some kind of group mind control...
Interesting, you actually bring up old threads just to bash N1, whether on real points or with bullcrap. I don't know a real person that would tolerate a bad phone, no matter how much it cost - and definitely don't know any person that would keep constantly complaining about it.

Troll? Did you contribute anything to this thread?
When you're on the phone, make sure that you're not covering up the hole for the mic near the camera.
I've noticed that when I have to use my shoulder to temporarily hold the phone up against my ear, the mic will rub up against my shirt, totally screwing up the noise cancellation. I've been told that when I hold the phone that way that it sounds like I'm talking through a towel.
Maybe you hold your phone weird?

That explains why I can't seem to cradle the phone on my right shoulder. If what you said is true, then cradling the phone on my left shoulder should work fine. I'll try it out. Thanks Erikakaz!
On the microphone issue, I think it's because the way I held the phone when it happened might have placed the mic too far from my mouth. Perhaps the ANC thought my voice is background. I'm now holding the phone tilted during calls, so that the mic's closer to my mouth. (The mic is off center right?)
Seems to work so far.

Hi All,
So i am thinking of going for a HD 7 device and the only thing that's holding me back right now is other people's comments about the sound quality as well as the display on the device.
I saw a video on youtube that does a comparison between the HD7 and Surround and i was surprised by the difference - Surround seems to have a better output when it comes to colors and depth! Is that the case? Are you satisfied with the HD7's display?
Secondly... Since the HD7 does not have any front speakers (the grill's being there for show only), how does the audio on the device compare to others? I hate phones with low audio... It was the one thing i hated most about my iPhone and it was also a major thing with the X1 as well. I like a phone whose ring tone sounds proper...
Care to comment?
With that said... I'm living in Pakistan... so i'm pretty much having a family relative purchase it for me and bring it down for me. We don't have 3G here - shocking - but only Edge... so i imagine either one of TMobile or ATT should work with the networks here? iPhone and Xperia X1 and Xperia X10 didn't have any network problems down here...
Regards.
Salman Khalid
the display on the HD7 is absolutely fine.
It's not and Iphone 4 or an Amoled, but it is a perfectly fine LCD.
I think the sound for things like music, is louder on this phone than any other phone I've had.
The sound does sound weak when you first get the phone but for all hd7 owners you have to download the htc sound enhancer. This will enable Dolby mobile, srs enhancement or allow you to ustilize the equaliser. With out any of these settings on i have found voice quality and music to generally suffer a bit. enabling it has greatly enhanced the sound capabilites of both speaker and headphone quality.
Generally speaking, when you get your hd7 or any htc phone download all the htc apps from the htc hub, it will greatly enhance the expereince on the phone.

Agreed I should have mentioned that as well... that was one of the first things I did. I've had Dolby enabled the whole time.
Thanks guys... definitely going for HTC! But now torn between the Surround and HD7... guess will throw the names into a hat and pick one out!
Dont no where you heard about the speakers but my HD7's two front grills do have speakers behind them. They dont sound as loud as the one @ the back by the camera but yes definitely has two front speakers.
Said that based on various posts across the forums and internet... PocketNow's review of HD7 clearly states them to be simply grills...
But i guess i'll find out eventually for myself: 'Coz i just placed an order for the HD7!!!
Personally I would choose the HD7 over the ATT surround as the speaker design is simply ugly and looks like some pocket radio from 1980.

Yeah... well, i do like the Surround a lot too... but i decided that the speaker, though has its charms, that charm'll probably fade away pretty quickly... HD7 seemed like the best bet.
I was for a moment thinking about the Samsung Focus 'coz of its MicroSD slot and the superior display... but bah! the HD7 is a better device! And as everyone's reporting, and as i know HTC to hold true to that fact... HTC'll probably provide the best support for their devices...
There is not two front facing speakers on the HD7

If you have SRS enhancements enabled, there are definitely speakers behind the front grills...I'm not sure why there is this misinformation going around but them being design only...sound comes out of them, take your phone apart, disconnect the rear speaker, and find out if you don't believe us

So much misinformation is flowing around 'coz HTC is stupidly ignoring all of this instead of simply posting more info about it... Plus this guy took the HD7 apart to locate the SD card slot, and the bottom grill on his device didn't have anything behind it or such to make it appear as a speaker...
Possible that the top one is...
Unless the guy took apart the entire phone (why?), he would not see the front speakers if he were just replacing the hidden sd card. I believe HTC says that they're stereo speakers, hence real speakers on the top and bottom. Lastly, they do exist because I've demoed the phone and completely closed of the back speaker while listening to the front. Although not as loud as the back speaker, the front ones do play sound, and it wasn't just loud rear speaker sound playing through the case. I have an HD2 and when you completely close off the rear speaker sound, you do not hear any sound through the front of the case.

Well, I'll admit I humbly stand corrected. It must indeed be sound spill from the rear speaker then, even though I did the comparison as I stated in my previous post. So, then what renders the HD7 "stereo"? The earpiece speaker combined with the rear speaker? C'mon, HTC... Looks like someone's got some 'splainin' to do.....

HTC never mentioned stereo for HD7 .
It’s theirs bad “shady” marketing strategy that makes you believe that you have stereo speakers.
That’s the main purpose of the bottom grill for the “second” speaker and there is a reason why its there.
That`s the main hook that does the job. Add the Dolby Mobile trademark and that’s it. They successfully installed and "created" stereo in our heads only.
If that doesn't do the job , than others so called reviewers will just put the cherry on the top.
Its the same with their 4.3 SUPER TFT that doesn't exist.
PS.
This is probably the explanation if they need one at all after all. (Not sure.)

Yes, a little bit, then I carry on talking and the other party manages to cope. I was assuming my case may play a little part in the problem, even though there is a small pin hole where the mic is.

Try to record your own voice with inbuilt recorder app than play and see. Check if you have case which covering Mic? Try to see if any residuel trap inside the mic hole try to use vaccume cleaner to suck from both Mic. Or try to talk with customer service number and talk very softly and ask if operator can hear your voice properly?, restart the phone and do the same and check if anything improved? Try to record your voice using camera and check. Hope this all step help

I'm having the same problem, I have narrowed it down to being the bottom mic, When in a call, using speaker phone the back mic is on and people can hear me. When headphones are in again, people can hear me, again though the back mic. But when I take out the headphones, and turn speaker off, people can't hear me, unless I'm talking directly into the bottom mic, but words get cut short. Hearing what it sounds like I'm thinking it's noise canalization going on..

Having the same exact problem. Using the voice recording app - the volume of a recording using the bottom mic is woefully low compared to using a headset to record.
When using the speaker to answer calls - doesn't exibit this behavior as bad due to the other external mic.
Everyone that is calling me is complaining that they can barely hear me and I think it has nothing to do with the carrier, but all to do with the phone.
My partner's phone is also doing this. Every time she answers a call the other person can't hear her and she almost has to yell. She does have the HTC Genuine case but I've tested calls without this on and still the same thing.
It is the Silver 32GB HTC One ordered through Handtec.
I guess you're talking about the official case which can hold up the phone like the case comes with GSIII ?
I saw two thread complaining the same issue in another forum. However, I have a similar case (but not THIS case) and don't have this problem.

Doubtful. It's not a loudspeaker. If a simple mod would turn it into one, surely Motorola just would have made it that way from the start.
It's not a speaker. It's just a grille covering the ear piece to give the phone symmetry.
The speaker is really loud anyway, much better than the Nexus 5.
Thanks for the replies guys, the speaker is amazing but just wished that this phone could have stereo sound. I just can't believe that the 2nd gen moto g does and this doesn't. Don't know if it's just me but I can really notice hearing audio more from one ear while watching things or playing games.

HA! That's what I thought at first too.
I vote with 5th option: It's a phone ... as long as it has screen and speakers I'm happy.
These comments though :'D Anyway, the screen seems great to me but the display's white balance varies from phone to phone. The speakers are good enough for me. You really don't need louder speakers and right now only One M8 has louder speakers as far as I know.

I arrived at this phone from the LG G2 (which I still have, so have seen side by side) and I'm really quite pleased with the screen. I mean I'm aware that it is technically a downgrade but I honestly don't notice it during use in the slightest. The speakers also seem comparable really and I have no complaints but to be honest I use Bluetooth speakers alot and probably don't look for sound quality out of the phones speakers. Anyway, that's my experiences! ?
