[Q] Problems with external_sd after froyo - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey - I already searched some times but couldn't find a solution.
Before I changed to Froyo I used my external sd for some big files - backup TitaniumBackup, offline wikipedia Wikidroyd, Navigon and BeyondPod the Podcasts.
With Froyo the folder-name of "sd" changes, like all know to "external_sd".
My first Froyo version was the standard JPM from samfirmware. TitaniumBackup could load from the external sd after I changed the folder.
But all the rest does not work anymore. When I change the path in Wikidroyd to the external sd the program crashed (it worked under Eclair). BeyondPod should find it automatic - but now it just creats a folder on the internal.
Also what I find really strange - I can't install Apps on the external. When I try it with some (which are supposed to work) it just tells me it can't.
Also when I wanted to install new Apps, like Google Skymaps - I needed to remove the external, before it was possible to install it on the internal than...
I now changed to Doc_Kalpik Froyo v7, hopped that this was only the problem of the JP6 - but still the same problem, and this time I can't even use TitaniumBackup anymore. (Yes I can move all the stuff on the internal - but thats not my goal...)
External is FAT32 - and I tried it with and without lagfix (so e4)
I really tried much until know - but nothing worked. What is the problem here, anyone any solution???
Edit: But I can use the external_sd in general - so I can copy stuff from one card to another (e.g. Astro) - I can't move them!

Noone can help?
So TitaniumBackup works again
Anyone some idea how to change the folder from WikiDroyd, BeyondPod, Navdroyd and Navigon to the external_sd?

post app2sd question

I have Cyanogen ROM 4.2.5 installed with auto app2sd set up but I've become a little confused. I have a root file manager and am able to see where my apps are going, but where are the files for my apps being installed? I have Aldiko, but I cannot find where it is downloading the e-books to.
Pre-app2sd they were downloaded to /sdcard/, but now as far as I can tell no apps download any files to the main SD card partition. I assume they are all going to the ext partition. Can anyone help me out here?
Also, the gallery isn't working (in the sense that it never has pictures in it, and it cant find pictures). I think this might be related to the problem I'm having with themes (When I install theme's they never install the wallpapers), which might have all been caused by my app2sd installation.
Anyone have any ideas?
When I set up app2sd I used Amon-Ra Recovery v1.3.2. I partitioned the drive, established an ext3 partition, then reflashed Cyanogen's 4.2.5 ROM. Following that I put on the Minus Theme.
Thanks in advance. Hopefully I didnt do something completely retarded. (and yes I used the search tool first)
The ebooks may be in a separate folder on the sd card. updates to the program may change the directory
Maybe there is something wrong with the SDcard itself. it is possible it did not partition correctly. If so, back up all the data on the SD + Ext and repartition

[Q] GUESTE'S 2.2 final ext4 - gallery - SOLVED!

Hello everybody!
As per title I am opening gallery and it sees only items installed in the internal sd, how can I let gallery look at .jpg files registered on the EXT SD ? I am not used to this filesystem. For example linking through USB to the car audio system let you listen only to songs installed on the internal SD.
ALL other considerations on the ROM are: perfect, particularly regarding battery life. Didn't find options for my SIP number account, using Sipdroid flawlessly .
Regards.
Alessandro
Try to force media files check. Go in Settings , Sdcard and memory, and unmount/remount sdcard.
Thanks for your reply, tried also folders rescan in dev tools, seems it scans EXT EMMC also but no results . Must look into some older thread in Acer Liquid, I remember smthg regarding a COOLIRIS.MEDIA file in sdcard in order to let device look into specific media for the type of files.
Will come back with results .
Regards , Alessandro.
So, I found that msg., but it regarded an old 2.2 version of Android for the Acer Liquid, and it said to cancel file in Android/data/, all the files in Cooliris.media, and reboot; maybe System remounts files in the SD when scanning for media and rebiults this file properlY ( it seems now untouched from the 23 of December ). Turning to EXT 4 as I am now maybe left EXT Sdcard unchanged: even if I set photos to be recorded in the external, photo is actually recorded only in internal SD ( which is a bit ..... full now, with nandroid etc. ) .
Need help.
Regards
Alessandro
solved
Found I had from 5/1/2012 a .NOMEDIA file in the root of External SD: deleted it and ... problem solved.

[Q] phone keeps rebooting, if more than 50 apps on sdcard

hi guys, i start a new thread cos till now nobody could help me.
if i move/install more than (about) 50 apps on sdcard, my phone works only until shut it down.
once rebooted, it keeps rebooting (it seems to happen while scanning apps on sdcard).
only solution is, to put sdcard in pc and delete some (doesn´t matter which) .asec files from .android_secure folder.
this problem only appears in android versions higher than 2.34 and it seems to appear on other phones (not only lg) too.
please, please, does anybody has a solution or an explanation???
Which ROM are you using?
Anyway, just an idea, looks like a format problem in your card, have you tried to copy all the apps out of the card (v.g. to a PC) and reformat the card?. You can copy verything back afterwards.
Sometimes, it just happens the card is left in a funny state by an O.S. crash or by silly accidents (like pulling it out without unmonting it first).
Hope it helps.
Cheers.
NOTE: If you are copying things out, remember there might be some hidden directories in the card, set your file explorer to show them.
NOTE2: I remember having a similar problem with an old WinMo 6.5 phone, turned out my SD was a fake one not having the expected capacity.
formatting card doesn´t help.
i tried it with 4 different cards. formatted all. did fullwipe, after fullwipe, started with clear rom, installed all apps again. everytime the same: if the´re more than 50 files in android secure, phone keeps on rebooting.
at the moment i use cm9 kang3. but like i told it´s the same with every rom based on android higher than 2.34. so i tried it with miui, miui kangs, cm7, cm7kangs etc. eveytime same thing, cos they´re all based on android higher than 2.34.
these guys have the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446961
is there anyvody who have an android version higher than 2.34 and more than 50 apps on sdcard and phone doesn´t reboot???
don´t believe that.
so i think i go back to gb 2.34. but is there a rom/kernel with a ramhack, so i got 404mb free ram? and i need the cars mounted in c-style, so external sdcard is sdcard and internal is mounted as _internal..
I have more than , 230 apps, and 40% they are on sdcard.
And i dont have any problems with it.

hmmm... ok, strange. which rom do you use and how many files do you have in android_secure folder and how big is it?

[Q] After upgrading to CM10 "emmc" changed to "extSdCard" and related problems

[Q] After upgrading to CM10 "emmc" changed to "extSdCard" and related problems
Hi,
I've recently updated my GNote (GT-7000) from CM9 to CM10, and looks like with CM10 the external sd card previously mouted as "emmc" has become "extSdCard".
Since then some of the apps (such as Apollo) have trouble seeing media files, others can't see the sd card at all, and when connecting to the desktop the drive which normally shows the content of the external sd card, only shows a couple of folders of it rather than the whole content as it used to do before (when using CM9 and previous roms I had).
Looked around for possible causes, but didn't find much. Someone mentioned that rommanager might have placed ".nomedia" files on the root of the internal or external sd card causing the problem, but that's not my case. Tried also doing a full wipe and reinstall of CM10, no joy.
Any idea?
Thanks!
- Adriano
That's the standard mount points for cm10 there are apps that will remount the sd and external sd in mnt as on stock roms. I had a quick look but couldn't find them, but I'm sure someone else will be able to find them.

clean install without restoring data of apps

Thank you for the suggestions -- I tried a clean install as well, but even the builtin apps (Apollo) still had troubles accessing the external sd card (not seeing any of the mp3s I had there). I have now resolved for restoring a CM9 backup I took before upgrading to 10... and everything is working as it used to.
Not sure why I ran into these issues which no one else seems having encountered so far.

I have the same problem except that the files on my internal sd card are not read by apollo player And the gallery. Is there any workaround. The problem started as soon as I upgraded from cm9 to cm10

Download ICS SD Binder. Check all 3 options and reboot. The path should be mnt/extSdCard (i think default is odb or so, make sure you change it) . It worked for me and so I'm trying to answer everyone with this problem. Give me feedback soon. And thanks button if I heped.

It didn't -- I don't need to have /emmc bound to /sdcard/external_sd as it was in GB. With CM9 everything for me works just fine with /emmc.
I tried the latest CM10 nightly, and using ICS SD Binder didn't change things. In the latest CM10 now there is also another mountpoint, called /storage/ and underneath sdcard0 and sdcard1 pointing to the internal and external storages respectively. In addition to /sdcard/ and extSDCard. Every few builds there seem to be some new change related to the storage's mount point. Going to wait another while before doing other attempts.

Any update on this question?
seems these are the new mount points even on the New JB roms from samsung
Somehow in some late November nightly, after flashing it, the files on my Internal SD were detected properly and it has all been working properly since. touchwood!

[Q] Restore symlink to external SD after update to 4.1.2 / V20B?

Hi guys, I updated my P880 to V20B and now have problems with using the external SD properly. I found it being mountend to storage/external_SD and I can read/write there. BUT: I can't set a folder on it as the backup location in Super Backup (as I could before), my LG notes aren't backed up automatically to the external SD location (as it was before), and I expect many similar problems to arise with time.
Formerly, the external SD was mounted to mnt/sdcard/external_sd, if I remember correctly. Now this symbolic link (?) is missing. When I performed the update and then first booted the updated device, I had the external SD removed to make sure my backups were safe. Might that be the reason for the missing link? My questions are:
1. Should I flash the kdz again with the SD card inserted? Or at least perform a factory reset?
2. Or could the link be created afterwards, preferrably without rooting my device? Would that solve the problem, at all?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Nothing?
How about formatting SD card ? Did you tryed that ? On 20a my card is read as storage/external_SD just fine.

Hey dimi, thanks for the suggestion! However, I am afraid you didn't read my post very carefully. I wrote that I actually CAN read/write to my external SD. But I cannot set the path in applications like Super Backup (when I navigate to some folder on storage/external_SD, the button "Select this folder" is inactive). And I suspected it is because it is no subpath of mnt/sdcard anymore. Also, some apps like LG notes don't write/backup to the external SD by default any more, and some of them unfortunately are not configurable.
That's the reason why I thought creating a simbolic link for mnt/sdcard/external_sd (as it was before) might solve the problem. However, I am absolutely not sure of this (plus: how to achive it) and would be happy about an expert's opinion.

I can set path anywhere on storage/sdcard, but not on storage/external_SD. Also the Notes application doesn't back up to external SD, as it did before. Coincidence? Maybe. I will find out with time using other applications.
Am I right that creating symbolic links without root access is not possible?

Idk about creating links but it is not coincidence that you and me cant select any folder on external_SD i guess it is app bug or maybe as i sad premium version requirement.

It worked on 4.0.3.
Hi again, I made some progress here!
I managed to create a symbolic link to my external SD (I am on a rooted CM10.1.3 now), but that didn't help. I could use it within the ES file explorer for navigation, but not within Super Backup (didn't see it). So I tried to MOUNT the external SD instead. Here is the command I finally used:
mount -t vfat -o rw,umask=000 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /data/media/0/extSD
No errors, I can access my SD via this mount point with ES file explorer, and I can navigate into this top folder now with Super Backup and select it as backup location. BUT I can't actually back up here, as Super Backup can't write, I guess ("backup failed").
I was hoping that this "umask" parameter would do the trick, but unfortunately not. Interestingly: when I navigate with Super Backup to this new backup location, all the subfolders of my external SD card appear as files, not folders.
I am pretty sure, it is nearly done and only has to do with setting the right permissions.
Does anyone have an idea what I could try now?
EDIT: I just unmounted, applied "chmod 777 /data/media/0/extSD" and remounted again (this time with "rwx" parameter). No changes.
Ok, I am back to 4.0.3 ICS and everything is fine.
