[Q] Captivate x Galaxy S International Version - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, im from Brasil and my brother is in Washington and he decided to buy the Samsung Galaxy S International Version from Amazon !!
The phone arrived today but here is the problem, a Captivate from At&T arrived instead of the international version!
he is going to use it here in Brasil, with TIM on 2100 3G frequency!
So, my question is, is there any important difference between then?
Does is it work with the 2100 freq?
Can i install different roms on it, because i've been searching about the phone more on the I9000 forum!
I've asked him to check for firmware version and here is what showed up:
2.1-update1
baseband: I897UCJF6
SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
So, should him keep it ? Need fast answer because he is coming back tomorrow!
Thanks in advance!

I'm in Brazil and using a Captivate. I'm using it on Claro Paraná which is basically 2100.
To be honest, I'd keep the AT&T one. There's an easy way to unlock it via a Market App (forgot the name now) and there is a lot of ino for it here.
You may have some issues with phone numbers but I'm still looking into it - so far I decided to remove all DDD codes and carrier codes and use "Operadora DDD" app to apply them on-the-fly.

The SGH-i897 is a quad band dual mode handset. It supports GSM frequencies of 850, 900, 1800, & 1900. It supports UMTS 850, 1900, and 2100 frequencies. There is a possibility the phone may be used with a wireless operator outside the United States however this is not guaranteed. The phone has been optimized to work on the intended carrier it was designed for.

Straight from the Samsung Website.

Thanks for the answers !!!
I was on the run to find out more about the phone because all the previously research was for the I9000 international version and there´s this deadline to return the phone tomorrow!
But after researching all day and you confirmed that it works on 2100 freq we´re keeping it!
The other concern that i saw was the 3 button download thing, but i´ve sent the instructions to my brother and its working perfectly !
Thanks again, cant wait to put my hands on it!!

Not to mention that the build quality of Captivate is way better than i9000

[Q] Captivate 3G Freq x i9000

Hi, first sorry for posting this doubt here, but i've posted on captivate forum and didn't have an answer (need a quick one)!
i'm from Brasil and my brother is in Washington and he decided to buy the Samsung Galaxy S International Version from Amazon !!
The phone arrived today but here is the problem, a Captivate from At&T arrived instead of the international version!
The phone is Unlocked since he tried his SIM card from CLARO (his work phone) and it worked!
I've asked him to check for firmware version and here is what showed up:
2.1-update1
baseband: I897UCJF6
SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
My main doubt is if it is going to work on 2100 3G frequency, which is the frequency of TIM here in Brasil !!
I've searched about it and on many reviews and also on gsmarena it states that it has HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100, but i found some topics on google with people saying that it would not work if it was not on AT&T network (which i think it uses 850 freq) !
My second doubt is if im going to miss something for not being the International version (which was the one that we wanted in first place)!
From my search i've only found that the captivate doesnt have the frontal camera!
Thanks in advance, i kind of need a quick answer because he's coming back on friday and only have today and tomorrow to return the phone !!!

[Q] if i buy a i896 in Canada now,will it random shutdown?

I am a Chinese,i like the sharp of i896,so i ask my friend buy one and mail me,i am now afraid the random shutdown problem, I've heard that behind 2010/12/1 all new i986 will not have random shutdown problem, and the old phones also can solve the problem by update 2.2,is it all correct? I am in china,if find the problem i inconvenient to exchange phone, thx.
No old phone will still have random shut down with the 2.2 update.
But I do not have any random shut down with custom ROMS/Kernal..
A question..Wouldn't cell phone be much cheaper in China?! or Hk at least?
Plus not sure if the right mobile band in Canada would work in China....on 3G...

Rogers:
GSM Bands:
GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
HSPA Bands:
UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz
China Mobile :900/1800 MHZ
In china, the original phone is too expensive .
For example ,i9008(Customized version for China Mobile, i9000) is ¥6000($960),and the rom is 8g ,ram is 256Mb,shrink so many.
So in China , the market of smuggling electronics is very large, and half of the price can be cheaper.Young people are basically buying parallel imports.
Come down to hong kong and use yahoo auctions
Theres some great deals here

depends on the provider, the i9088 has 850 band default, but then again i think the modem has all the bands, it may detect settings or something.
you shouldn't have the random shutdowns with either a att or rogers captivate. the recall goes by the imei number but there are things in the verbage that suggest that the newwer rom version is a fix to the problem. rogers however does have froyo and has an advantage over att there if you are buying a captivate.
if you by a rogers phone and it turns out that you need the 900 band then there are many custom roms here that can fix that. "andromeda" for instance is a modded rom for the goergio armani phone (900 band phone) and comes with the i9088 modem on version 1.0 which should do both bands. if you have trouble you could flash the armani modem from samfirmwares.com
also there is a i9088 rom here called "yin" that should have all the locale settings you need and the i9088 modem, the rom works with i9000 kernels and modems as well.

[Q] Taking a Bell Canada Galaxy S GT-I9000M to Australia?

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if my phone is going to be compatible with the networks in Australia (Next G), and what I can do to get it working on one of the carriers over there, most likely Telstra.
I really don't know where to get started.
Much appreciate any advice.
Tommy
Update: The wiki article on the Samsung Galaxy S, tells me that Bell's GT-I9000M is compatible with 850 Mhz. Telstra's Next G network is apparently 850 Mhz, and Telstra itself sells the GT-I9000T. Does that mean I should be able to use it when I move to Australia? What do I need to do?
Not all Galaxys use the same frequencies. If your phone and the carrier in Australia use the same frequencies, then you are good to go. Make sure your phone is unlocked otherwise you will not be able to use any other service besides Bell.

O2X P990h (850mhz UMTS)

Hi guys,
I've searched the O2X forum regarding 850mhz UMTS (HSPA) and found nothing so far. Does anyone here have the O2X P990h model which supports the 850mhz UMTS band? The only thing I can find is that the G2X supports 850 but has the model number P999.
I'm currently tossing up between the Atrix and O2X (I use the Australian NextG network btw). The locked bootloader on the Atrix sucks and coming from a S-Off'ed Desire I really want custom roms etc., but the O2X doesn't have 850mhz support which is a must for me, at least until now.
Since then I've stumbled onto these:
http://www.mobicity.com.au/lg-optimus-2x-nextg.html
They appear to be in a lot of other online shops as well, has anyone actually got one and can confirm normal O2X mods/roms work on the P990H?
Hi, i get 'h' on mine above the signal bars which i am guessing is hspa. (I'm in the UK on orange.) Or am I getting confused with something different?
Sorry if i am talking about something different.

This is on czech LG site for O2X:
2G network: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G network: UMTS 900/1900/2100, HSDPA 7,2Mbps / HSUPA 5,7 Mbps
so i guess 850Mhz for UMTS is really not supported, at least not on EU model (but i doubt the specs will be different elsewhere on P990)
Actually he's talking about one listed as "LG P990H Optimus 2x 850/1900 "
It's on negrielectronics web site as well as a few others... but it seems impossible to find out any information on it. I myself am also interested..

No, completely different. The standard Optimus model number is P990. There is a 2nd model called the P990H which has 850mhz UMTS support (apparently at least).
So nobody has ever bought or used one of these phones?
where do you see a 850 umts version ?
Fido's LG P990hn is an 3g 850/1900/2100 phone. I'm curious that is it able to flash a p990's third party rom or not.

Don't take this as a definitive answer, but yes, it should be.
As you can see from the included screenshot, the ROM itself (via Hidden menu) lets you select 850 bands for both GSM and WCDMA, even though the radio doesn't support WCDMA-850 on the regular P990, which the screenshot is from. (This is from the new official Gingerbread, but it was the same on Froyo.)
You may run into other problems of course, like the ROM not liking your baseband, which is the one thing you probably shouldn't replace with stuff from the P990.
As stated, I cannot say for sure, but I think you can try without damaging your phone. (Or get someone else to try it on theirs ;-)) Which is my way of saying you probably should get a second opinion. And a third.
Cant you just get a G2X? Theyre 850 i think. Or you could join the dark side and use optus

Just saw this thread and wanted to clarify for anyone else who might stumble upon it.
P990HN from Fido does support 850Mhz and also works with all the custom roms/kernels for P990
I'm brazilian.
In Brazil, UMTS is 850/2100mhz
(990h model)
here in mexico 850 its the 3g band, the 8xxx baseband + canadian ril makes the phone p990h, but the radio its not capable on p990 celphone, you can just load miui or cm7 and load the 8xxx baseband and the canadian ril then you can upgrade your phone
I have the LG Optumus 2x - P990.
This phone has a software lock on the UMTS 850Mhz Band.
Does anyone know how to root this phone and unlock it?
My phone will sometimes connect to 3G here in Canada, but then it reverts back to Edge Network. If I turn my phone Off/ON, it will usually connect to 3G then after a few mintues goes to Edge. Certian parts of the city I'm in will connect to 3G at all times, it's very strange.
I did not know (and still confused) about what I was doing when I flashed my Fido LG P990hN with T-mobile CyanogenMod7. I can operate on Rogers network, but its not stable. Im new to this so I don't know what questions to ask - I just keep reading forums and help files. Michael

I have the P990h model bring from Spain, and in the box says that works with 850/1900/2100 WCDMA, and all the roms from P990 works normally, right now im on CM7

ok guys, here what I found.
I started separate thread in Q&A section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521105
I'm in Ontario, Canada on Rogers. Got LG o2x from buddy who bought it in Europe. Then my mystery started. At home I was getting 3G and H, but at work (about 50km away) was getting only EDGE. But buddy with iPhone had 3G all the time. I got suspicios. Tried everything - flashing different ROMs, RILs, BBs... Same sh...it.
Then, my another buddy bought used LG 3D (Thrill) which was sold by Rogers (i.e. official Canadian edition) and asked me to root it. I did and tested - he had 4G (same as H, I guess) all the time. WTF!!!
So quest continues...
I found hidden menu in both phones. There I could force phone to use exact band I wanted. And mystery was solved...
So I forced:
GSM850 - my o2x got Edge; buddies: 3D Edge (the same)
GSM1900 (GSM PCS on phone) - my o2x: G; buddies: G
WCDMA1900 (UMTS_Band_II) - my o2x: H; buddies: 4G
and now...
WCDMA850 (UMTS_Band_V) - my o2x: NOTHING; buddies: 4G
So I made the conclusion that European o2x has WCDMA850 band disabled somehow. It explaines why I have H at home (big city where H is on WCDMA1900) and only Edge at work (small town and H is on WCDMA850).
Now I'm trying to find out if it's possible to unlock/enable WCDMA850 band on this phone. I read that Samsung has hidden menu where you can select bands you want to use.
Does somebody have and idea if there is something like that in LG?
Thanks!!!

There is, but it won't do you much good, as this is, to my knowledge, a hardware limitation. The P990 can not use the 850Mhz band, the P990h and P990hN can.
If you still want to try you'll find band selection in the hidden menu. Dial 1809#*990#, select Modem Setting/Band selection.

That's exactly what I did - went into hidden menu and selected each band one by one and then checked status in Engineering Mode of Modem Settings.
Now I have next idea: all this experiment I did while having "canadian" baseband 823. And i had WCDMA850 line in Band selection (but it didn't work).
Now I'm wondering if I still have WCDMA850 entry if I put "european" baseband 725. This will be my next step tonight. Because if I have WCDMA850 in 725 bb then I would assume that phone CAN handle it but it's disabled somehow.
What do you think?
I just thought that for manufacture like LG is easier to make just one universal phone and then limit available bands using software (or firmware)...
Thanks for ideas!!!
You'll find the (non-functioning) 850 band on European basebands as well.
I'm no electronics engineer, but I think there's more involved in supporting a specific frequency than just the baseband. (I think each frequency needs some kind of dedicated amplifier among other things.) The chip itself is capable of supporting 850 I think, but not the rest of the "supporting" electronics. I may be completely wrong though.
Basically the P990h is the revision which enables the 850 band. I think trying to get it to work on the regular P990 is futile, but you're of course free to try anything you want.
If I remember rightly, in the O2X review by Aandtech, they say that the 850 option is there in software but not there in hardware (on European version). So even though you can select it, it won't work. (At least that's according to the initial review)

1.) the LTE Frequencies vary from country to country...
From HTC:
EU: 800/1800/2600 MHz
US (AT&T): 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz
US (TMO): 700/AWS MHz
US (Sprint): 1900 MHz
Asia: 1800/2600 Mhz

Now comes the great news.. as far as I know Rogers uses 2600 MHz . so EU Version from the UK WILL work!
99% confident
EDIT:
Maybe this Thread can be moved to Q/A
Rogers should have the phone next Friday....given that is when the pre-order offer ends
the one that available now, only has one band that matches rogers LTE band :2600
as far as i know and read from XperiaZ forum, (c6603 XperiaZ has almost same LTE band as ONE)
no one are able to get LTE.
if you need LTE. get it from your provider.

I could assume they have the US Model then? If they have the European one, all they need is the correct apns and maybe activate LTE over Settings.. DIAL *#*#INFO#*#* and then phone information ... and see if LTE is activated

anyhow
2600 is still not very realible (although i heard that one verison of Note2 that only got 2600 got LTE)
Alright so I guess I'll hold off. What band I'd missing exactly
So not 100%sure the uk version will work on rogers LTE??
how many version of htc one is there
i checked the htc uk n canada site
