Help with /efs problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I was updating my phone to froyo according to these instructions by Virnik0 (meh, it seems I can't use links in my posts), but the name of the topic is "[HOWTO] manually flash Samsung Galaxy S with JPM firmware ** WORKS **" And you can find it from these forums.
Everything went fine. I successfully updated my phone to froyo, but I didn't root my phone or install lagfix even though the person gives instructions on how to do so, instead I just jumped into this part. This is a quote from the instructions.
GUI Medthod:
Download Android Mate from the Market
- Open the Android Mate, and switch to File Explorer bookmark at the top
- navigate to the /efs folder
- by ticking, select nv_data.bin, and from the bottom menu, choose copy.
- navigate to your sdcard directory (/sdcard for internal SD, or /sdcard/external_sd for external SD, does not matter)
- press Paste from the bottom menu.
- Connect you're SGS to the usb and download ''nv_data.bin'' to your computer
- Open ''nv_data.bin'' with notepad or wordpad and search for ''KOR'' change this to the product code matching your country
Click to collapse
Now after I have downloaded "Android Mate" and navigated to the /efs folder to my surprise I find that it's empty and doesn't have such file named "n_data.bin" or any other files for that matter.
What does this mean and how do I get such files there?
After searching forums I found out that you should take backup from those files in /efs, but that was not mentioned in the instructions I was following
Edit: This is what I did before I jumped into the part I have quoted above.
1] Download both I9000XXJPK and I9000XXJPM firmwares
2] Download Odin 1.3
3] Download 803 pit file
4] Startup Odin.
5] Extract I9000XXJPK and I9000XXJPM tar files which you have downloaded to separate folders.
6] Then in Odin: (Now we will flash JPK firmware)
a) Click PIT Button, select s1_odin_20100803.pit file
b) Click PDA Button, select I9000XXJPK-REV03-PDA-low-CL584433.tar.md5 file
c) Click PHONE Button, select MODEM_I9000XXJPK.tar.md5 file
d) Click CSC Button, select GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJPK.tar.md5
e) Tick Re-Partition Button
f) Power off your phone and make sure you have SIM card out, SD card out.
g) Press and hold 3-button combo, to boot your phone in Download mode (Volume down, Menu, Power)
h) Once in Download mode, connect your phone to your PC via USB cable
i) In odin, ID:COM field shall change color to yellow, and in Message window, you will see message "Added"
j) Now press Start button.
k) Go and take cigarette, coffee, etc. This will take up to 15 minutes.
7] After successfull flash, phone will reboot itself, and Odin will write Success message. First boot can take another 10 minutes, so be patient during stare at glowing S logo on the screen.
8] If phone stays in text console (Recovery Mode) after reboot, writing (with red), that it is having problem with internal SD Card, do not panic, it will take another minute:
a) Just use Volume Down/Up to up or down movement and selection.
b) Select "Wipe cache partition" and press Home
c) Select "Format internal sd card" and press Home
d) Select "Wipe data / Factory reset" and press Home
e) Select "Reboot" and press Home
9] Get back to point 7]
10] Power off your phone again, press button combo for Download mode again.
11] Close Odin, start it again. It shall detect ID:COM port again.
12] Now press PDA, choose JPM_JPM_U_JPM.tar file (finally, JPM firmware).
13] Make sure Re-partition tick box is unticked.
14] Press Start
15] After reboot, you will have newest Froyo firmware available.

Edit2: Could it be that I need to root my phone in order to see the files in /efs?

[Q] Not able to update ROM

Hi All,
These are my mobile details previously :
Mobile details: Samsung Captivate
ROM:FROYO.UCJI6
KERNEL VERSION: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
BASEBAND VERSION:I897UCJI6
FIRMWARE VERSION:2.2
nUMBER OF aPPS: 46
I am new to the ROM world and this is my first time.
So i strictly followed the tutorial in this link on "[HowTo W/Pack] Flash Stock I9000 2.3.3 NEE Updated (again) 4/25/11"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045734
Which says :
1. Wipe data and cache/Factory Reset with CWM. (pull battery when complete to shut off phone)
2. Find the "GT_I9000_XWJVB_XXJVK_NEEJV3_Sbl.exe" file and click it and extract its contents into its current folder.
3. Open up Odin 1.7 and now select the 512 pit file I included, and select all the files in the necessary place in Odin and make sure "repartition" is selected". your odin should look like this http://d.pr/Ixt2
4. Put Your phone in download mode and connect, now hit start. (THIS IS WHERE THE ONLY DANGER IS, YOU ARE NOW FLASHING 2.3.3 AND THE NEW BOOTLOADER INCLUDED WITH 2.3.3 Just dont unplug your cable or have your computer die, otherwise you will be 100% Clear)
5. Boot up normally and let things settle.
6. now power off the phone and wait for it to shut off completely. at this point hold down "Volume down and Power" at the same time and wait till download digger appears. Open up Odin and select the 512 pit and xcals kernel(In the PDA box) I included and DE-select repartition if it auto selects and go ahead and connect your phone (Obviously needs to be in download mode) and flash.
7. The phone will reboot and once again let things settle (media scanning and whatnot). Plug in the USB cable and transfer the folders included in this pack named "Fixes and modems" and also "For Rooting" to your phone. then power off the phone once again. this time hold down "Volume Up and Power" as soon as you see the screen turn on let go of the power button and continue to hold volume up until you see CWM.
8. at this point you should be in CWM (Woot!). navigate to flash zip from SD and then navigate to the folder "Fixes and Modems" and flash "Enable CRT Lock.zip" and "update-xvjvb-home_button_fix.zip" and I recommend flashing "modem_ugjk4.zip" as JK4 seems to do the best.
9.Reboot. At this point reboot and you should be on stock 2.3.3! Congrats!!
10. If you want to root read the txt file i included for rooting!
I was able to install the ROM till the 7th step, but from there iam not able to apply the fixes and modems.
Once i press the volume up and power button its taking me to Andriod system recovery <3e> mode:
I have four options here:
1)reboot
2)update from sd card
3)wipe data card / factory reset
4)wipe cache parition
when i choose update from sd card by pressing power button, nothing is happing.
Can anyone help me in this regard.
Another issue iam facing is when i make call installing this rom my normal speaker under the at &T logo is not working,i have to switch on the speaker to talk to anyone, and thereturn key is also not working.
Best Regards,
Chandu.
I gt it resolved after installing the correct rom

[Guide] Full Tutorial To Install Custom ROM [GT-P6800]

thnxs to sk806,(go and thank him first)
First, you need to root your device. Download the link from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21584547&postcount=1.
Put the file "root.zip" you just downloaded onto your EXTERNAL SDcard.
Then, power off the device.
When it's off (it'll buzz), press the volume up key (the one closer the power button) and the power key at the same time.
After a few seconds, the "Galaxy Tab 7.7" splash screen will come up. When it does, LET GO OF THE POWER BUTTON, BUT KEEP HOLDING THE VOLUME UP BUTTON.
Soon you will see some yellow writing on your screen saying the device is copying apks, etc. What is happening is you are booting into the tablet's stock recovery. After a bit, the yellow writing will go away, and then you will arrive at a blue menu.
Using the volume keys, select "install from external storage", then press the power button. You will arrive at a menu of your sd card.
Using the volume keys, select "root.zip" and press the power button.
You will again see some yellow writing and your device will be rooted.
After it's done, reboot the device by selecting reboot and pressing power (it may reboot automatically, I can't remember). You are now rooted!
Now that you are rooted, you need to flash the ported Clockwork Mod Recovery for this tablet onto your device. This is a custom recovery that will replace the stock one you saw before and allow you to flash custom ROMs...You can download the recovery .tar file in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21957277&postcount=1.
You can flash the file your just downloaded, "P6800_Recovery.tar" one of two ways: with an app on the market called "Mobile ODIN", it costs a few dollars, or you can download a windows desktop version of ODIN here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19760431&postcount=1. THE MOBILE ODIN METHOD IS MUCH EASIER, AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! If you choose to use Mobile Odin, proceed to the next step and skip steps 14-20, below. If you decide to go the desktop way, skip ahead to step 14.
If you are using Mobile Odin, you just copy the "P6800_Recovery.tar" file to your internal or external storage. Then open Open Mobile Odin. You will see a menu. Toward the bottom, you will see an option to "Open file". Select this and then navigate to the "P6800_Recovery.tar" it will load it up (you will see it in the "recovery" slot). Then hit "Flash Firmware". Wait while it does it's thing, and it will reboot automatically. When it reboots, you have successfully flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery onto your device.
If you use the desktop version, you need to first install Samsung Kies (Google it) to get the proper drivers for you PC to recognize your tablet when plugged in via USB.
Then, copy "P6800_Recovery.tar" to your PC desktop.
Then, you need to unzip the ODIN 1.85.zip you downloaded from the link above onto your desktop, go into the unzipped ODIN folder and run the Odin 1.85.exe.
You will be shown a GUI with a list of buttons on the lower right side (PIT, Recovery, CSC, PDA, Phone, etc.). You want to click the button that says "PDA" and then, in the file selector, choose the "P6800_Recovery.tar" file.
Next you need to put your phone in "download" mode. To do this, power off the device. When it's off, press the VOLUME DOWN and power keys at the same time. When you see the "Galaxy Tab 7.7" splash screen, let go of the power button, but keep holding the volume down button (so, it's like booting into recovery, but with the volume down button, instead).
You will then be shown a caution prompt asking if you really want to enter download mode, hit the volume up key to select yes. Now, plug the tablet into the USB cable that came with your tablet and wait for windows to install the drivers (as noted above, this is why you installed Kies). You will know your device is properly connected when one of the windows in the upper left of the GUI has a yellow bar at the bottom of it and says COM:3 or whatever port you are on.
When you are sure your are connected, click the big Start button and it will go through the process, and your tablet will reboot automatically. You now have Clockwork Mod Recovery flashed to your tablet.
Once you have Clocwork Mod Recovery Flashed onto your device, the last step is to flash the custom ROM.
Download ROM zip file from the thread, then place it somewhere on the internal or external storage of your device, then power off.
Once your device is off, you will boot into recovery like you did above, press the volume up and power keys at the same time, and when you see the "Galaxy Tab 7.7" splash screen. let go of the power button, but hold the volume up key until you boot into clockwork mod recovery (you will see a blue menu again with a little logo of a hat on a gear.
As you will see, this is a different recovery from the one you booted into before, it is a custom recovery that will allow you to flash custom ROMs!
Using the volume keys and selecting with the power key, first perform "wipe data/factory reset". When that's done, perform "wipe cache partition".
When you have done these two wipes, select "Install zip from sdcard". You will then be shown a list of your sdcard's contents. Navigate to the ROM .zip file and press the power key. It will then ask you if you are sure, and select yes then press the power key. You will now see a little progress bar and a description of what is happening. It takes a while and your device will reboot automatically when it's finished.
That's it, you have a custom ROM on your tab!

This is the tutorial as I wrote it...I suggest you edit the OP with this, or the version above. If you hit the "Quote" button below, you can copy the properly formatted text from the reply window (it will start with [QUOTE: blah blah], have "[*]" instead of numbers, and end with [QUOTE/]), and then copy and paste to your OP. first question:
Why you can flash this ROM with your stock recovery, i look inside the script steve made and found that
-script mounting and unmounting /data and /system partition
-deleting file system from /data and /system partition
-moving file from zip to /system and /data partition
-making busybox symlinks
-installing kernel
-set some permission
All above process is support with edify script from stock recovery...( until now, i dont know if samsung lock it someday) thats why you can install steve ROM...

This is correct. The tutorial was for all custom ROMs to come, not just my tweaked stock one. The fact that you can flash my ROM is because it is nothing too exotic (it's stock...) and the bootloader and recovery on the tab is not locked down. These things may change, and it is better to have the CWM recovery for that reason AND, especially, as noted in the post above, you can make NANDROID backups which you really should do before you flash a custom ROM...
Steve
thx for the explanation !
i now use CWM recovery, flashed with Odin mobile
great tut, but my CHINA P6800 will not accept any other ROM install for some reason. Yes, I have a brain and others confirm it's somehow locked. No f-ing idea how; more research after (endless) travel.

This should be included in the tutorial imo.
so in a nutshell, we're bootloader unlocked, I can get my brand new HK galaxy tab 7.7 and root/CWM right away (like my OG tab) without having to do any Bootloader unlock method?

yes..mine juz straightly rooted..same like most of the others

Quicky. installing latest kernel guide

Hi,
Sorry, I know this has been covered loads before but im still a little confused on the method.
Im running a great custom rom on my SGA called MindCR. I would like to be able to flash an updated custom kernel.
Im attempting to flash Rafael.Baugis. E3 Stable.
Code:
How to install Kernel with E3 Recovery (Stock):
shutdown the phone
hold the keys Vol-Up + Home + Power per 6 seconds
select the option "apply update from sdcard"
select the file ( xxxxxxxxxxxx-XXX-boot.img.zip )
wait the end of process and reboot
hold the keys Vol-Up + Home + Power per 6 seconds
select the option "apply update from sdcard"
select the file ( Select_you_rom_file.zip )
wait the end of process
select the option "apply update from sdcard"
select the file ( xxxxxxxxxxxx-modules.zip )
wait the end of process and reboot
Do I download stock-kernel.tar ? and from the stock recovery, apply update from sdcard, choose stock-kernel?
Do I need to wipe cache afterwards?
Sorry this is so easy for most, but to me those instructions are confusing!

A: .tar files are to be flashed in Odin
- on the phone go to download mode: keep the [+] and [-] pressed while you power on, when the menu pops out, press [+] again
- on the pc launch Odin, connect the phone with the usb cable, it should lite up a COM-x port if drivers are installed (Rafael provides those too)
- in Odin, press the PIT button, select the cooperve_0623.pit file, press the PDA button, select the 2012***E3-PDA-boot.tar file, uncheck Re-Partition. Start!
B: .zip files are to be flashed in recovery mode, no need for PC
- move the zip file to the sd card
- go to recovery mode: keep the [+] and [Home] pressed while u power on for around 8seconds, a recovery menu will pop out soon after. if it reboots you've kept the 3 buttons pressed too much time, try again.
- select browse for zip file. choose 2012***E3-boot.zip. flash it. choose 2012***E3-modules.zip. flash it. Reboot. No need to wipe anything.
Everything should be clear from Rafael's kernel post, link to files is <<< Custom Kernel and Modules >>> and you can navigate outside the default skydrive folder to find stuff like windows driver and etc.
you can navigate there upper so you will find also driver files etc.

Procedure To Update Samsung Galaxy S With Cyanogenmod 10
Device must be running latest Gingerbread 2.3.6 with ROOT to begin .....
Remove KIES completely from Phone and reboot Computer then Install latest Samsung USB Drivers then Reboot Computer...
Ensure that your phone battery is at least 85 percent charged
Cyanogenmod 10 Download
Download Google Apps (Optional)
Connect your device to PC by using the cable.
Enable mass storage mode on it.
Now transfer / copy all the 2 files to your device’s internal SD card.
Ensure that you are not keeping it in deep directory.
Now disconnect the phone from computer.
You then need to enter into recovery mode.
To do so, switch off the device completely, press & hold Volume Up button + Home Button + Power key until recovery mode appears.
After entering into recovery mode, select “install zip from sdcard” & then “choose zip from sdcard“.
Navigate to the ROM file (which you’ve transferred earlier)
Select it & press on ‘Yes‘ to continue. ROM installation process will start.
Wait for the ROM to get installed.
After ROM gets successfully installed, your phone will land in the recovery mode again.
Now select wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache partition to wipe all the data & caches from the phone memory.
The same procedure you have to do for installation Google Apps. (Just don’t do the above step i.e, don’t wipe the data after installations of Gapps).
After installaing both things, now press back button to land in recovery mode.
Select reboot system now from the Recovery mode to Restart the phone.
Usually first boot of the phone takes some time after flashing of new ROM so be patient....
Done!
Issues if you have any :
LOW STORAGE NOTIFICATION : HERE or See this LINK
If the above doesnt help TRY THIS APP
NO MOBILE DATA :
Toggle Flight mode ON/OFF
IMEI Issue :
Flash a stock version of Android for your device: GB 2.3.6 (JVU, or other) that will restore your IMEI
Then you can backup the /EFS folder.
NO 3G AVAILABLE :
The CSC you used is most likely not intended for your area.
This means that the broadband provider settings are not included and
need to be configured manually.
Go to : Settings->Wireless and Networks->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names, press the settings-button and select "New APN"

[Q] Cannot get from UCKH3 TO UCKK4 kies/ota fail.

my kernel is 2.3.35.7-i897UCKH3-CL461307
The wiki states I must be at Android 2.3 build UCKK4 (AT&T) to get to cm10.
I tried the captivate OTA update- says I am at most recent firmware.
I tried kies- and it says unregistered device.
I just bought this phone (new-unlocked) from amazon to replace my failed captivate (running cm10). I really miss CM on the phone. lol.
Can someone point me in the correct direction? I am hoping there is a way to get to cm10 from where I am.
Any help is appreciated.

Quick few questions please? (elaboration)
from the read-me / many posts:
**Once u have the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders, it is not necessary to flash them again. They are
backwards compatible, therefore you can flash Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, CyanogenMod, MIUI without issues,
per the proper install instructions.
-Are the bootloarders mentiond, the ones from flashing, or from samsung/att itself. eg. I have stock gingerbread 2.3.4 from the factory, should I use the bootloaders or not?
-Would it hurt to reinstall the bootloaders if there was any question?
- I performed a dry run, and cannot get the "digging down android" I get this:
Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung recovery utils -for bml-
image:
http://imgur.com/bJcQDXU
What I expected:
http://apcmag.com/images/galaxy-froyo-3.jpg
Did I do something wrong? (edit: built a jig- goes into digger mode now)
-since I am on 2.3.4 I am tryin gto install the kk4 you linked-
the instructions say get to download mode (done)
run oding as admin (done)
yellow com lights up(done)
press start? --how does this get to the correct file? do I load it under PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC?
thanks much.

any advice?
Have u looked at this Captivate - PC Connection Issues... thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33227541
Be careful flashin packages with bootloaders. If flash fails during the install of the boot.bin or sbl.bin u could possibly brick ur phone.
If u were on anything gingerbread before this, then u have the gb bootloaders. So u can use a package without the Bls included.
Try a different micro usb/usb cable or diffferent usb port. More info in that thread i linked.
Majority of the time, the trying of a different cord is the solution.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Yea, I bricked it. Back running though. Was a hairy couple of hours. lol.
Thanks for your help.

Here is how I did it (100% working)-
From android 2.3.4.
Directions that worked: I used linux host running a xp virtual machine guest. This may have presented sopme issues, but it worked.
I used the odin method. Each time I connnected the phone I needed to goto devices and click the phone. I need to do this
because I needed 2.3.5 to get a rom installed, and OTA/Kies failed everytime.
Preliminary: Download Rom (and gapps) and get on internal 13gb SD card. power off phone.

and held the up/down vol buttons and tried again whhile the usb was connected. I believe it may have been a
