[Q] Kernels / UV / Freezing - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried using both MicroMod's Sense Hybrid and Rodriguez's MIUI mod ROMs and found that both caused my phone to freeze or not wake up.
I've started using Enomther's and that has been fine for a few weeks, so I'm assuming it was freezing due to low tolerance of undervolting on those ROM kernels. I'm happy with Enom's, but would still like to occasionally try out other ROMs. What can I do to prevent this when trying out alternative ROMs? Is there a good universal kernel that isn't UVed but has 720p support?

You could stick with whatever ROM you want and try out a few different kernels to see what works on your device. IntersectRavens have a pretty good following, and pershoot's are pretty much the standard. I have had awesome results with wildmonk's but I think most of his are undervolted.

[Q] any ROMs that dont use setirons kernel?

So Im not really a fan of the setiron kernel because it KILLS my battery. It is fast as hell but not that much faster than the AOSP ver. Im not knocking it because it is a really nice/fast rom. Just generally curious if there are other roms that do not use setirons kernel. Seems like all the ROMs now are using his kernel.
I agree about the battery life thing, the only ones I know of are aospmod, and cognition.
Use Spaceman
By far, the best rom with captivate kernel is SpaceMan. Fast and bugs free.

right. thats the one i use now and have been for a while. i just like to try the different ones out there. spaceman is the shiz for sure tho.
As long as whatever rom you want to use isnt based on i9000 (Might work but i've never tried) you can you use 7 zip to take the spaceman zimage and drop it in the rom before flashing
hows the batt. life with the cogkernel? i notice a few are using it in combo with the aospmod
I've only been using it since yesterday lol, but it seems just as good as stock so far

I had that experience but found it was ROM specific... Check out the Assurance 2.0 ROM from MikeyMike... Great ROM fast smooth and stable, with Setiron.

[Q] Best Kernel for my HTC Hero?

I've done some researching and found out that some kernels are better than the ones the ROMS bring... not sure whether this is true but would like to know if this IS true which kernel is the best you guys have come across that makes games run faster, smoother?
Tips appreciated!

Ideally you should stick with the kernel that comes with your ROM. There are slight differences between the kernels that can cause issues.
For instance, CyanogenMod 7 and its derivatives already contain an up-to-date version of Decad3nce's kernel. So there's no need to flash his (now outdated) kernel over these ROMs. Doing so will break CM7's built-in CPU controls and may cause instability.
On the other hand, some of the older, Sense-based ROMs have software that hasn't been updated to reflect changes in the kernel. These ROMs need kernels designed especially for them.
The best idea in regard to stability is to stay with what you have. If you're feeling adventurous, you should look for an explicit statement of compatibility either in a ROM or kernel developer's thread.
Thanks ill read more about s0be and stick with aosp's default kernel.

Interesting......I was under the impression that all of the Cyanogen kernels were capped at 691 MHz though? My phone is stable to 748 MHz with virtually every rom I've tried crashes at 768 MHz. I have been using the Decafuct uncapped #589 kernel with RC4, however it doesn't work at all with 7.0.0 stable and the pre-packed kernel seems very sluggish to me compared with how RC4 runs.

[Q] ROMs and KERNELs

I have a question about kernels and roms regarding the competability. I believed I'm still considered new in the android sector though I have used 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.3.
Over the years, I have been using stock ROMs because and putting in my own kernel to get a good balance of performance and battery life. Recently I've have tried getting into custom ROMs as I felt that some stability issues I have read might be some user experience instead of a real stability issue. So I decided to give a go. I looked at certain ROMs but decided to go with more popular ROMs like DarkyRom, they until then I somehow bricked my phone (not ROM issue) and manage to save it back, I decided to go for a newer ROM, which might be as popular as my previous ROM. I decided to go for Doctorz Rom, since all these custom ROMs usually come with another kernel already, is it perfectly Okay to flash any other kernel (Kernel are competitable with the version of the firmware, of course) on the ROM, irregardless of whether the ROM is customized by a developer or not. Example, DarkyRom comes with darkcore kernel (I flashed it to speedmod because I saw that you can do it), Doctorz Rom come with semaphore kernel.
My question in simpler terms, is whether can I flash Doctorz Rom with say, darkcore or speedmod kernel?
simple question for which I am afraid there is no one, simple answer. Some roms play nice with most, if not all kernels, some don't. Similarly, some kernels seem to work with just about every rom, many do not. Hardcore's kernel is one of the more robust ones and usually works with most roms.
Part of the issue is the scripts used in many roms and kernels and what is left behind when you copy a new program to conflict with the new stuff.
(1) Always read the directions on any new kernel or rom.
(2) A clean phone will decrease the chances of having issues with any newly flashed kernel or rom. If your phone is cleansed correctly, any issues are solely a problem of the newly flashed firmware. Bits of legacy program can and do cause issues, which is why a system clean is important.
Thank you, that was the answer I needed
If you were happy with stock ROMs, you should be looking at slightly tweaked stock ROM. I was using Darky with all its bells and whistles for quite a long time. But recently I started to look for something more closer to stock versions and found Simplicity which does pretty good job for me so far.
The choice of ROMs and kernels is so wide that it's hard to decide and it depends if we want to achieve speed or stability. But you can mix ROMs and kernels definitely. I was using Darky ROM JVR with Semaphore kernel completely fine.

I decided to use custom rom because of the features, since i had nv used one before. I cant deny that stock ROM gives a very neat and clean rom which sometimes leads to more speed/battery life, but lets give these developers some.chance as well

Best custom rom bases stock.

I have tried a couple of different roms, and it is realy hard to find a perfect one. I realy like cm7-kang and miui. It has great speed and response, but the problems with the gpu drivers, is causing some of my apps to freeze and lag. I have been happy with the stock rom combined with horsepower kernel. Without the kernel, my phone gets slower after a day or two. With the kernel, it will take longer before the phone gets slower. So does anyone know a rom based on stock that has fixed the slowdown bug.
Thanks
I Suggest gueste v3 rom based on cyanogen and stock .!!! its perfect working , very fast , i am currently using it without any problems check it. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1464986

Rock stable and close to stock ROM

I just rooted a friend's phone and was wondering what would you recommend me. He doesn't know how to change ROMs so I am looking for something rock stable, close to stock, nothing fancy, just something that works without any problems.
It depends on what type of experience you want. Are you looking to alleviate some of the issues that plagued the stock ROM with its poor I/O response time? What is your reason for replacing stock if you want something similar to stock?
CM7 or CM10 are both good ROMs; CM7 significantly improves the performance over stock, it has the same UI as Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread and it had extra (useful) features.
CM10 is out of alpha now (I think) and provides the latest Android experience, similar to what you would get on a new phone. ICS/JB was a significant redesign over the ROM that was stock for SGS.
I'm not satisfied with CM ROMs, I ran them on both my HTC Desire and Nexus S and they didn't feel smooth. I want something stock with basic root settings.
The reason he wanted a custom ROM was because his phone was heating much and rebooted.
I would say Slim ICS with the setup on my sig.. first ICS rom ive been using after GB and just loving it, VERY stable and smooth, Only downside that pop ups on my mindd right now is you cant record 720p video if you want more RAM with the bigmem patch enabled.. BUT thats only IF you want it enabled
