iam running Stock Eclair 2.1 with no roms or any thing
i have been reading alot about Lag fixes , most popular two are Rynza's Lag fix and voodoo lag fix
what i need to know is

Any one can answer me please kindly post a reply :}
There's a lot of useful information in the threads about Doc Froyo ROM and SpeedMod Kernel. Maybe you could try reading into that.
Personally, I am really liking Doc Froyo, which has the latest SpeedMod Kernel built in.

1. Not really
2. Voodoo for eclair is awesome. Really improves all forms of lag.
3. Possible brick if you can't get into download mode?
4. If you don't remove lag fix's before flashing you can run into numerous problems, and you may brick your device.
5. Yes, use Odin and reflash back to stock firmware.
I hope this answers your questions....
4.
Thanks alot guys i will read more about this
too bad i dn't know how to add a custom rom , lol but i will try figure it out

Glad to be of help
1. Make sure you DO have 3 button combo download mode... Now, I always have problems getting into download mode. Most of the time, it takes me 3-4 tries with Vol-down, Home, Power, releasing Power button at various moments. I find that its also important to press the Voldown-Home-Power buttons in that order, and release the power button first (soem say, when the big S shows, others say no sooner then when the digging Android puppet is shown). So, are you sure you don't have 3-button download?
2. I have nothing but positive experience with VooDoo Lagfix, following the instructions mentioned at project-voodoo.org (you need 3-button download mode...)
3. Your Galaxy doesn't start anymore, and you cant get into download mode to flash something new
4. At least for Voodoo: Voodoo changes the file system to ext4, AND flashes you ROM so it can read and write ext4. If you flash a new ROM without uninstalling lagfix, you install a ROM that understands RFS filesystem onto a device with a ext4 partition. Your ROM wont be able to read the apps and data partition... Compare it to flashing a FAT32 capable OS to a NTFS partition. What uninstalling Voodoo does is reformatting ext4 back to RFS
5. Voodoo is easely reverted (put one file on your SD card and reboot, voila.)
BTW, if i where you i'd first upgrade to Froyo 2.2 via a normal way (Kies), then its quite safe to install Voodoo. In theory, this can be done even without 3-button combo, by issuing the adb command Reboot Download. But as always: at your own risk...

- Make sure your phone is charged
- Read as much as you can here. Go to the voodoo threads and the rynza OCLF threads and read what others experienced. It can be helpful.
- Rynza's one click lag fix is probably the easiest to apply if you are not confident to fiddle around with the phone.
i want to install official froyo i have disabled the voodoo lag fix on my rooted phone.my firmware is jg4 and kernel in 2.6.29 [email protected]#voodoo lagfix.if i update my firmware thru kies will my kernel revert to stock kernel or whether i have to first flash stock jg4 using odin then upgrade thru kies please help could not find the reply anywhere pl note voodoo lagfix is disabled in my device but not completely uninstalled and its rooted also

Hi guys just got my galaxy S and I am currently running on Doc Rom's latest build with Hardcore 15Q 500hz kernel but I have a ton of questions I don't understand. I have been trying to read the forums as best as I can but I still can't find the answers I'm looking for. Please explain in layman's terms I cam from the Desire and N1 and things were pretty straight forward over there. ROM+Kernel+Radio
1. What's voodoo?? and Lagfix?? Kernels from what I understand but why are there so many spinoffs and variations and modifications?? Are they required? If I made a rom from docs kitchen does it come with these? Do I still need to install them after?
Because when I read the directions it says to close any lagfixes before flashing. Can anyone give me the correct sequence of what I am supposed to flash to the phone??
2. Is there an automatic text reflow feature for the browser similar to HTC SENSE wherein the text resizes even after you've really zoomed in and not just double tapped?
3. I read in doc roms kitchen that back light notification is included but I cant get it to work. Do I have to flash the kernel in BLN's thread? Wouldn't that overlap whatever kernel I got on my rom?
4. How do I get battery percentage for my rom?
5. Is there a mod wherein you can enable the home button to unlock the phone while in the lockscreen? Similar to the one Cyanogen is using for the desire and N1
6. Whats JPY / JS3 / JPX??? I assume its official firmware from samsung, is JS3 the newest?
Thanks for helping an extremely confused noob!
hmm right where to start ...... 1st of all voodoo is a kernel same as speedmod both have an option to install a lagfix (speeds up the phone basically ) but this is optional and is usually contained in CWM (ClockworkMod) CWM is a more advanced recovery method where you can flash new roms and apply tweaks do resets ect.. ( to get into recovery press Volume up + Home button + Power button all together )
there are so many versions of ROMs + Kernels because alot of people on here are developers and like to modify their phones.. If your not too sure if this will benefit you, i suggest you dont bother as 1 little mistake can turn your phone into a very expensive paper weight.
BLN is an app which will make the buttons light up if you get a txt, email, ect without lighting up the whole screen (which drains battery) there is a similar app names NoLed available in the market.
as for the automatic text reflow i dunno what that is if you mean multitouch this phone supports it ( pinch to zoom and all that **** )
JPY JPX JS3 are firmwares JS3 being the latest. and finally for the mod of making the home button unlock the phone i dont think ive seen that done on the SGS yet.. but there are alot of different Unlock screens you can get from flashing.
oh and the battery percentage thingy thats included in some roms. otherwise there is an app called circular battery ( google it )
but as said earlier.. if you do decide to customise your phone make sure you FULLY UNDERSTAND what you are doing.. if you have doubts dont do it, read a bit more and post some Questions on here till you are confident enough, as no body on here is responsible for damaging your phone except you !!...
Hope all that helps sorry for such a long post

When in CWM and tweaking lagfix options theres an item that enables it. Does this mean that by default the lagfix is turned off when I flash the kernel or rom? Is it recommended?
What does convert system to ext4 / RFS do? Is it recommendable?
Do I have to partition my sdcard or something for this to work?
Whats the tweak option and is there anything that I should do for better performance?
and lastly when I reboot after enabling lagfix it asks me if I should convert and it proceeds to backup. What just happened? Is there anyway to revert? Will it mess up my files?
Oh and btw I'm using Doc's Rom and theres an options under display to change my lockscreen. It gives me the option of changing from stock android, samsung or whatever else but it doesn't seem to work. Do I have to do something to enable it or is this still a WIP?

I read the spreadsheet but still cant understand what the difference between voodoo and speedmod kernel is. Shouldn't voodoo be bettter?
like everyone says on here about the battle of voodoo vs speedmod. there is no better / worse its personal choice both work brilliantly so u decide which to use.
as for lagfix its disabled as default but you enable it via CWM when speedmod asks to backup its best to do it incase of any trouble ( VERY RARE ) you do not need to partition your sd card.
ext4 is just where data is saved instead of rfs, its quicker this way hence the name LAGFIX and its optional, but it works
doing anything other than what samsung say is risky, but the clever people over here on XDA know what they are doing and thats what makes the SGS better. your files wont get deleted unless you do a wipe (manually or wipe version of ROM )
Oh and the lockscreens are changeable in 'settings' if not check out the threads ( or where you downloaded your ROM from )
I think I got it. Thanks buddy! Really appreciate it!
I have rooted my phone using the Onclick rooting software, that seems to have been a success.
However, I tried using teh OCLF from market to lagfix it but nothing seem to have happened in the 30mins I let it do its thing. THe progress bar goes full then start again, and does this repeatedly. And after reading around some people say that's now out dated and other lag fixes should be more suitable
So, now that my Samsung G S is rooted, what options for lagfixes do I have?
Hi, im asking the same questions
Hi, i am in uk running stock froyo 2.2, I have rooted my phone using Z4root, but I want to put a lagfix on, I have read that OCLF isnt very good anymore, and voodoo you have to install a new rom and im not brave enough to do anything like that so which is the best lagfix i can use and i have heard about overclocking what does that mean? thanks in advance
can anyone help us please

Besides the fact I dont know whats a Samsung G S and no idea what your ROM version is you could do what I did. But depends on your ROM and SGS version!!!
But its on all your risk. Read manuals and warnings to the kernel and the app. You have been warned (I have done this on 2 SGS mine and my friends till now , he has 2.2 stock rom and I 2.2.1 stock JPY too)
Took the neldar kernel flasher , backed up my stock kernel.
Then flashed the speedmod CWM version with the kernel flasher, kernel you can find in the speedmod kernel thread.
Applied the tweaks and lagfixes (ext4) from the recovery. done
and that was it. btw when you do this, try to run the rom WITHOUT the lagfixes, just with the new kernel so you can easily get back to your stock. If you want more, then go to the recovery ULK options and do the recommended tweaks from there. If you still need it, then apply the lagfixes (always backup and always on your own risk)

Not sure you have to install another rom, but I do not know the the original voodoo kernel . Maybe you could try with the one I suggested up there.Btw there is more kernels to choose from, depends on your Galaxy Version and ROM.
Overclocking is nothing you should be concerned with yet I think there is a pretty big speed jump from stock to custom kernel, then from custom tweaks and also to lagfixes. If you are not satisfied then you can try that. OC should make the phone faster. In my opinion though the 1GHz is enough for the phone. With OC come some risks (heat, battery usage, stability)
Last night I managed to get the OCLF working on the phone and noticed improvements. Now that I have a lagfix working, will OCLF be alright to leave on there? Or do you still recommend going to somethign else? (I didn't quite understand why OCLF is being considered out dated anyway).
Install the new version (2.2.1) and lagfix is of no need anymore.
Completely satisfied with a smooth running Galaxy now.

Well keep the lagfix you have now. If you wanted try something else you would have to undo the changes you have done till now. If it works and you like it keep it..
To plexat: yes the 2.2.1 it's sufficient in speed.
In my case though I had to do already 2 factory reset once cuz the phone didn't start at all and in time even the 2.2.1 became slow. I installed the custom kernel though just for the sharpness fix but was surprised with the lower battery usage and speed. There is still a big speed jump from stock to custom

Ok man, first of all. You have stock 2.2 but which phone exactly?
In the kernel thread, is written for which phones it is and also for which ROM.
So if it fits yours. You can try what I wrote you somewhere up. Backup, flash the CWM version etc.
First make sure though if you have the correct kernel for your ROM and phone. AND you shouldn't have any other type lagfixes applied.
Thats kinda all. What you can do if you have root, without any trouble, is backup your kernel with the app. Then verify if other things fit. And you can try to flash a custom kernel.
EDIT: Why are you still on 2.2? I mean UK had as one of the first 2.2.1 and plexat is right. 2.2.1 is faster and smoother as 2.2 ? If you dont have any lagfixes or other custom things applied you should kinda update to 2.2.1
Hi Pagot, I checked I had the right kernel and stuff and YIPPEE ive done it, my heart was in my mouth but i took the plunge and it now says i have the kernel above, it does seem more responsive and quicker although the benchmark still says the same? the reason I have still got 2.2 is because I have a branded o2 phone and they havent released it yet for branded phones and i am scared to try and flash it to 2.2.1 is there anything i can now do to speed it up anymore ie lag fixes and things thanks for your help
Glad it worked for you
Well not sure about upgrading the rom with a custom kernel. Am new at this too . So dont flash a rom yet.
From what I asked in the speedmod kernel thread. It should be safe to put back the stock backup kernel you made with the app and then to update if its out. Thats just for 2.2.1 upgrade for you in the future. The condition is however no lagfixes applied!!! If you have them applied it can and will probably go bad on the update!!!

Ok please dont look at the score. Mine is actually worse as on the stock kernel if you are talking about quadrant. They are irrelevant.
If your phone feels right, leave it as it is
If you want to tweak it little more. Get to the recovery and there are some tweaks, should be still safe to make. They are marked as recommended in the ULK options.
I wouldn't suggest yet to apply a lagfix. Try it how it feels now. If it starts getting bad and laggy etc. Then experiment with that. I had a lagfix but reverted back, for me the speed is sufficient how it is now
Since you have now CWM you can even backup your whole phone.
If you dont know how to go to the recovery the 3 button combo. There are many nice tools in the market for that. I personally use SGS toolbox/tools, in it is a shorcut with reboot to recovery.
When you are there. the BACK button is actually like OK so beware of that!!! You navigate with the volume button UP/DOWN and confirm with home or back.
Thanks again, been in and enabled tweeks, just so as I no, I noticed in recovery there is a lagfix option is this where i go to apply this and if I do it how do I disable it if I want to
Also you said I could backup my phone now how do I do this Thanks again

Ha seriously glad for you . One day you have no idea about anything, the next day you run a custom kernel with lagfixes and tweaks.
When you get to it, its kinda not so difficult. (It took me kinda a half year )

How true. Just in case get familiar with Odin. Having fun with flashing by CWM can sometimes result in being stuck. Knowing how to use Odin and having all necessary files on your computer should give you some sense of security.
I know there are probably loads of threads about this, but my questions are a little specific and I was hoping to get some direct answers.
If there are other threads then feel free to post a link to help me find them and I will be happy to read it.
I'm new to rooting/flashing and have a few questions...
I have had my SGS for almost 5 months now, and it's a little laggy.
I've heard about Flashing/Rooting before, but I've never tried it for fear of bricking my phone.
So could anyone please tell me:
1. If I do by any chance brick my phone, is it fixable? (I hear the chances are very low and also I think I read that Flashing can fix it?)
2. Should I flash to 2.3.3 or is a custom rom a better choice? (Performance/battery/everything overall wise)
3. If I flash the phone, will I still need a lagfix or will the rom include a lagfix or is the rom THE lagfix?
and 4. If custom rom is suggested, which rom is best or which are the best choices?
If anyone could shed some light it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
There are plenty of threads and FAQs on xda answering all your questions. A simple search should bring up plenty. This is a good place to start. But I will give few quick answers.
1. If your phone has download mode working (Vol Down + Home + Pwr) then its very easy to recover from a bad flash. All you have to do is flash again.
2. I’d go with a stock 2.3.3 ROM (like the latest JVO). Some might say custom roms are better since they have more features, But I never felt the need to install one since stock deodexed roms give me all the options I need.
3. IMO newer ROMs (after 2.2.1) don’t really need lag fixing like older ones.
Thank you very much for your reply.
I guess I'll do a search for each of my questions and see if I can get any more answers out of it. 8)
EDIT: Just thought I'd better check that my phone could even go into Download Mode and found out that I can't. )8
Looks like I'll just wait for the 2.3.3 update anyway.
Hi, im looking for best ROM for i9000, which can launch Voodoo Sound Control, and most of newest games, like Modern Combat 3 etc with Sixaxis controller. that's all what i need, cause ICS works bad, and cant OC it .
Gamerz Rom : Here
All depends on what apps you like and use of function, delete apps tweak it etc
Theres a few good ones out there for games...
I read people had problems running gta3 on sgs and i tested it on ICSSGS RC4.2 with Devil 1.1 CFS LED2 kernel overclocked to 1.4ghz and it runs pretty good.. I mean it works is a big thing because what i understood that game does not run on many roms at all, not at all in stock.
But that Gamerz Rom is supposed to be good but if you are not happy test out ICSSGS RC4.2 because i've installed games to it and every one works and runs very good. Its a fast rom for me at least
eww.. I've got the problem. i can't flash it, cause i must get back to stock ROM, and i don't know how to do this... i find something about Odin and completely don't know what to do ;/

Ok this reminds me when i started to do things i was on forums reading about 2 days before i did anything to my phone
ok here is a link for info how to do it -> http://www.androidgalaxy.net/how-to-flash-a-galaxy-s-phone-back-to-stock/
I just googled that and seems to be pretty ok guide..
But i can explain in simple terms, go to http://www.samfirmware.com/ and register there and download a firmware that works for your phone. use the search to find right firmware, for example i9000 and there are country/carrier where it works where you can find the right one for you.
after you download it then you need odin, that you can google easily if there was not download link in guide..
Then restart your phone in download mode (hold down vol down and the menu button or whatever it is called and then push power button... after that when phone starts to start just release power button but hold down the vol down and "menu button" and download mode should start.
After that start odin ( for me i just have the usb cable plugged in from start of everything) and it should find your phone. it shows yellow if i recall in first ID:COM space. If not download never version of odin.
then just put in files in odin, PDA -> you put the one starting with CODE, phone you put in MODEM, and in csc you put the csc file, it usually starts with phone model but it reads csc. After that you just push start and your phone is pretty much in stock after that.
Hope you understand what i wrote and if not just google around how to get phone to stock etc... With sgs its pretty easy and its actually hard to lock or brick your phone so you really need to be unlucky for that
Hope this helps you
That's not enough

In addition:
Stock ROM comes without DBDATA inside, you should have one:
sdl4.4pda.ru/757546/DBDATA.tar?000a57476d438dc74f234b52000000003a450f100128f91e14da38aa2457f393
If you decide to flash stock ROM, load it in PDA section in ODIN,
load DBDATA.tar from link I wrote above.
Also you need PIT-512 file:
st04.file.karelia.ru/3sgj6s/0b6c6537b20b5ebda7714907e4c261aa/fbf4fc5613e83516a9edfca3924901e5/512-PIT.rar
Load it in PIT section.
Choose "re-partition" if it's not choosen automatically.
And flash... (by pressing START)
Wish you a Happy ROMing =)

i would google it. it is not difficult to do that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
just look for other HOWTO threats. they are plenty. and easy to read and follow
use stock rom 2.3.6 jvu or jw1 and semaphore kernel with latest semaphore app 0.73, andip has some wicked themes, use go launcher ex with ics theme (for ics look) whilst getting mega stability and speed, everything works. i will look at ics when its ready (on general release)
Sent using TCP/IP
ok, i backed to stock rom, and flashed semaphore kernel, but now, if i want to flash GamerzRom, i have a problem. I did everything fine, wipe cache/data, etc, and after i flash this rom, my phone won't run. it just restarting and restarting over and over again... any ideas?

Ok guys here are 2 doubts i wanted to ask :
1.My power button died ,i read around n seems that its common but reading so many solutions got me confused can anyone suggest me a proper solution?
2.A friend of mine who has a captivate as well is on GB pinnacle ROM ,he wants to go back to froyo, any suggestions how tht could be done safely as it will involve bootloaders .
And will a factory reset help ?
Going back to froyo ain't a big deal, bootloaders are backward compatible, so you don't need to flash them, so there is your risk of hard bricking right out the window right there. If you wanna go to a custom froyo ROM you can either just flash it, or if you get a scripting error because the froyo ROM uses a different cwm version (2.5 to 3.0 have different scripting) so, if that errors flash a custom froyo kernel work Odin, that will bootloop so just button combo into recovery and then you should be able to flash the ROM. Or if going to stock froyo, just don't flash bootloaders.
