One of the things I miss about my blackberry is that I could change songs while they were playing while the phone was in any state (apps or otherwise) by holding down the down volume rocker to repeat the song or the up rocker to go to the next song.
My question is can this be done on my captivate via rom, app or otherwise?
My apologies if this doesn't exactly fit in the dev forum.

Wrong section of the captivate forum for asking that question....simple answer google and app(if does exist).
Get Tasker. It does all of that and more

Tasker gotcha. Appreciate a constructive answer.

Not a problem. Most of the things BlackBerry users miss when going to Android can be created on Android using Tasker. You can even make the phone make an action when you turn it over on its screen! Do the 14-day trial before buying to be sure its what you are looking for.
Thanks!

The music player "Mixzing" allows you to control songs with the supplied headphones which have the button. I'm pretty sure you can use that feature outside of the app but not certain.
Related
On an iPhone, you click the headset's button once and music plays/pauses. Double-squeeze and it skips to the next track.
Anyone able to get this to work on the Captivate? If so, what app?
I tried Captivate's default music player app and doubletwist but it can only play/pause when using the headphone button.
not possible
Yes.. it is possible.
The player 3 (aka cubed) does this. Click headphone button to play/pause... double click to skip to next song... and long click to bring the player up to the front. Works great.
(From my Captivate via XDA app)
Most of the 3rd party media players let you do this... I personally use MixZing!
Damn I really miss this. I guess 3rd party music player for me it is.

Got double-squeeze to work on "3" (cubed) app. The interface needs getting used to, but at least it works.
Thanks for the tips!
Saw yesterday while browsing some apps, there is an add on or whatever for the stock music player and headphones that allows skipping, search, etc. Didn't get around to downloading it so can't say how well it works.
Jason
B-tunes also does this. At least the single click to play/pause. Never tried the rest with it. I don't have much time with b-tunes.
Works with Pandora, as well as the Vanilla 2.1 music player (just installed the .apk for it, titanium uninstalled the galaxy s player.
in winamp, single click plays/pauses, double skips to the next track, and long squeeze brings up the winamp player.
The stock music player + stock headphones works like this. I am not sure if itll skip to the next song, but I know it will pause/play
Sorry to revive an old thread!
This is a different device but i have a similar question (cant start new thread yet).
I have Samsung Galaxy S3 and all im trying to do is skip back a track using the supplied earphones. I cant get it to work can someone help?!
You should try clicking three times. The clocks should be done in rapid succession of each other.

Thanks for reply. I have tried that but it just skips forward. Looking around the net it looks like its not possible! Seems crazy! Wonder if it will be a jellybean addition? Have found a program that you can use to program buttons but still seems like a crazy feature not to be integrated!
In my experience the click to go back is usually just one more than the clocks to go forward. Please try again. Also what brand headphones are you using?

ive read there is a code that can be punched into the dialer to bring up the settings
the version i found just shuts down the dialer
maybe its the wrong code for our devices
The only thing I wish I could increase the volume of is the external speaker. Meltus' app doesn't appear to do that.

I'm running CM6.0/FroYo and that isn't an available option.
Copied from another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15406689
"I am surprised at the lack of information and help on the net for this issue. The in-call volume, and the speakerphone, are very quiet. Forget the radio and driving with the windows down, a moderate breeze is enough... I press the phone hard against my ear and still don't catch everything.
I've used CM's DSP manager to boost the speaker signal, and this isn't enough.
Even with full volume & the DSP boost, there is very little crackle. It's as if the speaker is barely utilized.
I haven't met anyone else with an Aria, but every other Android phone I've seen works perfectly fine as, you know, a phone."
There must be a way to overdrive the speaker, right?
Is there an app that activates the GPS via text? Incase my phone was lost...
Thanks!

As far as I know there isn't one but I just leave it on since it doesn't use power unless an app calls it.

Droid Commander lite in the market claims to do this.
Sent from my SuperDark DJ05 Fascinate.
This is very easily done through the app called TASKER.
Set up a profile, when Messaging is active, it turns the GPS on, give it a 30 second wait command, and then apply your next action. It sounds complicated, but its actually very easy to use.
Tasker is def my all time favorite non-root app. Its possibilities are endless, truly.
Question: Has anyone else had EVERY and ALL text msg threads just vanish after a sudden but short (30-45sec) freezing? This is the 2nd time its happen to me. Even my locked msgs wer gone. If I'm the only one thats had this happen, I can give details if it would help explain more. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Is your phone stock? It is seeming more and more to me that stock phones are having major issues with everything. My wife had a stock LG Optimus S and its barely a month old and already having major issues with handling and weird random stuff like what you just explained. Can anyone else confirm this? I have no problems with my Zio other then wifi cutting out. That's been this particular sets only problem. I keep up on this thing, stock phones don't have the control to keep caches free and clear and so on.

Yes its all stock. And also I can't/don't know how to set my mp3 ringtones to my contacts. Like, an mp3 for one contact, a different mp3 for another contact, so I can know who is calling me just by hearing which mp3 is ringing.

The answers to your questions are all in reading around here. Not gonna spoon feed you. Assigning a custom ringtone to a specific person is really easy and if you can't do it you need a less smartphone because its obviously too smart for you.

Spoon feed? Nah nah, ever since the "upgrade to 2.2" the option to set different mp3s to different contacts is no longer showing up when editing a/any contact. So ill disregard ur lil smart a** reply. I ain't all tech-y with smartphones and stuff, I just want to set it like before the 2.2 so if I'm at work welding or playing baseball with my kids, I can hear who's calling without having to stop mid-weld or mid-pitch just to see who's calling. Yeah its probly already answered somewhere in hear but I ain't searchin n searchin when HOPEFULLY I can just ask, post, and just check back later for someones appreciated help, not some sh** like spoon feed crap. If ud rather reply with that crap and not with something helpful to what's being asked then just be an ass with someone who is already being an ass. L8Rs.

The lord helps those who help themselves. No one else will spoon feed you either. Jack Wagon. If you won't search no one is going to help you. I search and that's how I find things I need. I don't post and wait for someone else to read for me, because I'm not lazy. Get real. If you can't figure out simple things like mp3ringtones you have a phone that's too smart for you, idiot.

Wow, this is so simple. I will go ahead and tell you how to do it. Got to your contacts, find the one you want to set the ringtone for and hit the menu button, get this it actually pops up a menu that has some options, one of which is "Ringtone" Select "Ringtone" Then it will pop another menu (tricky I know) bear with me here, choose between Android System or User Added Ringtones or Zedge or whatever other ringtone apps you might have. The next step is all up to you just pick the ringtone you want and VIOLA!!!!!! /discussion
Alright can we stop the bashing on others and get back to the subject.

Everything is koo up untill I select ringtone, after I select it, a list of stock tones (that I know I didn't put in) come up starting with default, Android beat box, sunshine, rainy day, waterfall or something like those. Never does it ask Android ringtones or user submitted tones or anything of that nature.

Hi all.
I have a Dual brand receiver in my car, and one thing it did with my old blackberry and even droid 2 was when I pressed the talk button for the radio, it launched the voice commands on my phone. That seemed to go away with the droid 3. Not sure if it was a moto thing or gingerbread thing.
My question is, does anyone know of a script or app to kind of get this functionality back? Kinda defeats the purpose of hands free if I have to grab the phone when driving.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Ok let me ask this...
How do I programmatically look for a keypress from a bt device?
Is there some code I can run as a script to return the keypress I am looking for. If so I can then just do a listener script that waits for an on press event for that key and just have it launch voice search.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
So I got a key event app that shows button presses and low and behold, the one butto in the car makes no impact on the droid 3. So I wonder what made the other phones, noteably the berry, listen for it?
Is there something I can do to open up the range of bluetooth, e.g. via the stacks sdk?
I really would like this functionality back tbh.
Can any devs weigh in?
