Forgive me as I'm sure this has been asked.
I've run search on XDA app as well as googled, and looked everywhere in settings.
My short press search button no longer brings up search function from the home screen. Haptic tells me it's reading fine. Long press to voice search is still good. Short press search in other apps is good too.
Also, MENU | SEARCH is dead too, in home screen.
Running CM nightly 233 & ADW.
Kind of lost. Pointer much appreciated.

I'm guessing you've confirmed Google Search app is installed?

Just verified, yup, and runs no problem. Just independent of the button.

I'm guessing you're using CM? And had to delete the GoogleSearch apk and reinstall it from Market to upgrade? Your search is on /data. You need it on /system for the key to work. Get root explorer, or use terminal if you understand basic cd, ls, cp, and mv. Look in /data/app and find the apk for search, rename it to QuickSearchBox.apk, and push it to /system/app. Then reboot, and it should work.
Edit: I can't remember, it might be GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. I think it's what I said the first time, but if that doesn't work, try it with Google in front of it and reboot again. My N1 is currently backing up in recovery or I'd check.
That's it, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. Thanks much.

google search keeps force closing
this is odd...
after uninstalling bing and installing google search from market it was working fine for a while (1-2 days)
now whenever i type more than 2 characters into the google search box it force closes.
tried uninstalling / reinstalling and clearing the app's data- no dice.
also tried with email history enabled and with it disabled.
any ideas?
I have mine working OK, but not with the Voice Search from the market. What I found was that the Voice Search from the market did not fully integrate with maps, etc (like saying: "Navigate to" came up with some ridiculous kbbb or something else, and speaking for an instant message was hideous).
I renamed the BingSearch.apk and the Bing service apk (can't remember the exact name) in the /System/Data directory (I'm rooted). I pulled the Voice Search APK out of a 2.2 ROM (specifically from my old device - Eris) from the System/Data directory and installed that (uninstalling the market version first). It integrated fully with EVERYTHING, but as of now, like you, my physical Search button doesn't work.
My search Button doesn't work with bing either lol. Straight outta the box. Nothing.

This isn't for Google Search but it was posted for using the search to bring up the phone. Better than not being functional at all and you may be able to figure out how to make it Google Search.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/lg...val-breaks-search-button-requires-rooted.html
The problem with that is it changes the functionality of the Search button entirely. For some, that may work, but in certain applications, that button is still a method to search (like root explorer).

Its not the app. I just went through this when I got the Charge. Go to your Google dashboard and go to speech and click anonymize recognition. This deletes the voice recordings stored from your previous phone. Mine was coming up with kkkkk stuff when I first got the Charge. I guess different devices pick up your speech in a different manner. Try it and see if that fixes your issue.

I was having freezing problems when using google search. Tried clearing it, no better. So I backed it up,uninstalled it and installed from the market. But now, the search magnifying glass button no longer opens the google search when pressed. I've restored the backup and still the search button is not working.
Can somebody tell me how to get it working again. Don't want to have to do a hard reset.

Here's how to do it.
Load up rootexplorer, goto data/apps copy the google search app to /system/app folder and rename the google search app to this QuickSearchBox.apk
now do a soft reset.

I might be the only one that thinks the button is worthless, but if anyone would like to remap it to the camera let me know and I'll write up the instructions on how to change it.
This will disable the option to switch between 2D and 3D when looking at pictures or in the middle of games but if your like me I dont have time to play games or mess with 3D pictures, and yes that makes the phone no different that any of the others but I just like the phone it's self.
steps
1. Download Root Explorer
2. Navigate to /system/usr/keylayout
3. Top of app select mount R/W
4. long click on omap-keypad.kl till menu pops up
5. select open in text editor
6. scroll all the way to the bottom to key 249
7. Edit 3D_HOT_KEY to CAMERA
8. Back out of text editor and select mount R/O in top of app
9. Back out of Root Explorer
10.Reboot
This will now map the 3D button to open the camera insted of something you may never use.
Go back to stock.
1. Navigate back to /system/usr/keylayout
2. Mount R/W
3. Only do this if you have the omap-keypad.kl.bak this is a backup of the original file
4. Delete the modified omap-keypad.kl
5. Rename omap-keypad.kl.bak to omap-keypad.kl
6. Back out and restart.
There you go.

Im interested!
Cool, I may do this, I didn't know it actually turned 3d on / off while in a 3D picture or in the camera.
I hate it when I accidentally hit it.
Might be a dumb question but it just disables the ability to suddenly turn on the 3D in the middle of something but doesn't actually disable the 3D capabilities? If so, I'm very interested.
The remap works. How ever when I changed it back to 3D_HOT_KEY the 3D key does nothing.

Instead of making it open the camera could it be programmed to act as a shutter button for the camera to take pictures?
No it doesn't disable 3D just changes what the button does.

It makes my four bottom buttons light up as if it's registering that something is supposed to happen. But nothing happens. Strange. I looked back and the text still says CAMERA.
I don't know if this makes a difference or not but under the qwerty.kl it says 3D_HOT_KEY is still at key 249. The ompa-keypad.kl and the omap-keyboard.kl.bak show key 249 as a camera.
When I set it to camera it worked, It took a second to launch after reboot. But what's strange is when I set it back and rebooted. I get nothing. Just the navigation keyslight up but no 3D app. I don't wanna reset my device just to get the button working again with the 3D.

Hi,
I just flashed the LANIGHT v4.2 DATADATA ROM from the Captivate Android development thread, and everything is working great, but I can't figure out how to work Google Now. I did a search on the thread and it said the search button is mapped to Google Now, but when I press the search button, nothing happens. No search or Google now or anything pops up.
I hope I'm posting this in the right section. If anybody can help me out that would be great. Thank you very much.
I'm using slimbean 2.4 and the button mapping has been changed to holding the menu button. Try that and see if that works.

Hey thanks for the reply, but it seems it still doesn't work. I'm not sure if the LANIGHT version uses that mapping. Is there supposed to be an app called Google Now if I go into the settings and apps menu? My ROM seems pretty basic, I don't even have any sounds to choose from.
Do you have Google Search installed? I don't think that it is included in the rom. If not head over to the play store and download it. Let me know if that helped?

Hey all, I am running Captivating RC1 and am trying to fix my gps settings because like most people the gps sucks lol. I have tried the codes *#*#1472365#*#* and *#*#3214789650#*#* that dont do anything, I have also tried LauncherPro that no longer has a short cut to LBSTestSettings, and Any Cut is no longer on the play store. How do you access the gps settings these days? All topics on LBS seem to be outdated.
Thanks!
Try searching for Angrygps.apk
That replaced lbstest after Froyo.

Well i have angrygps now. I installed it and put it in system/app folder... But cant i tweak it? I cant find it as an app and when i try to access the apk it just wants to install. Is there a way to get into it and make sure its working?
I thought I had got this to run at somepoint in JB, but when I try codes with my current rom, CM10.1.0 RC2, the dialer isn't launching Angrygps.
Sorry if the same is true for you.
I have found that using the hellstorm fix with some mods works well for me. I get reliable quick locks consistently - as good as can be expected with the weak location of gps antenna on captivate.
Here is link to my gps.conf file. If you make a backup of your current /system/etc/gps.conf file, then paste this version to replace it, make sure permissions are 644, then reboot, this should give you good gps.
if you are in usa, it should work as is. If elsewhere, you will need to check pool.ntp.org for best ntp servers for you, then edit the list of ntp servers in gps.conf.
I use xplore to do the copy, then chmod. I have also edited the system/addon script so that my gps.conf survives CM nightly flashes.

Did you set permissions correctly when you placed it into /system/app? I haven't used it in forever but I do know that setting permissions was required when I was using it. Also if it's working correctly you'll get an app icon for it in the app drawer.
Edit: Although I'm on Slim I just installed and confirmed it does in fact still work on the latest Jellybean. You do have to fix permissions for it to work and if you don't have a file manager to manually change permissions just reboot into recovery and run the fix permissions option and reboot.
So I am guessing the only real reason I want AngryGps is to alter the SUPL settings, other than it being a "text editor" it doesnt really do much else behind the scenes. That being said that gps.conf file should suffice without the installation of AngryGPS. I have done so and have yet to truly test it out. I do never get reception indoors but I feel thats everyone's case. My car roof however also seems to block my signal, and make me drop lock, is this common as well? I have to hold my phone near a window; an inconvenient position while trying to drive... nor the safest or most comfortable "fix" in my opinion...
Oh and for the permissions on the gps.conf I just set them all to read write and execute, i dont know what 664 means but im assuming that should cover it

Should be 644.
Linux/unix file permissions are the sum of
4 read
2 write
1 execute (for directories & executable files)
In 644, the first number is owner r+w, the second is group members read only, the third is everyone read only. If it were a directory, then it would be 755, to have the same effective permissions.
And thanks to m1batt1, I created an activity shortcut and I can launch angrygps, no code required!
About the car gps, I use a vent mount, which has worked well both in a VW passat and in Honda Accord. It keeps it near the window with a view of sky, and has the added benefit of cooling the phone when AC is on.

How did you get that shortcut to work? My permissions are 644 and it isn't appearing in my drawer. I did notice tho that there is a version of AngryGPS that's named AngryGPSMod and some guy modded it so u can open it. Is this what you guys are using? Do u know how to set up this modded version? Do I put the original AngryGPS in the system app folder? Or the modded one?

I don't have the modded one to my knowledge. Also after placing it and fixing permissions a reboot is required to see it. When I get to my PC I'll upload the apk I've been using.

Well now i found a new obstacle. I was going to remove and put in your AngryGPS that you posted but during my uninstallation process I hit a roadblock. I removed the old AngryGPS from the system->app folder but it does not appear in my settings->apps on any page. Which led me to think it was already uninstalled. But when I went to install the new AngryGPS it says there already is one and that it will update the old one
I tried to go ahead and proceed with the installation but it just returns installation failed. Where else can I look to get rid of the old AngryGPS?

You'll have to manually delete the apk from /system/app/ using a file explorer and then copy and paste the one I added into the same folder.
Again remember to change your permissions when you add it back in. unfortunately you have to do all this manually because this app only functions as a system app and the usual installation process will fail as you've already witnessed
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Use a file manager to browse to system/app folder and also to /data folder.
Delete any instances of AngryGPS.apk.
Reboot.
On creating the shortcut, I use holo launcher instead of trebuchet, but the process should be similar. After installing angrygps, go to launcher desktop, and select add. . ., then activity, then scroll down and pick the second activity under Angrygps. It shpuld be an activity named .angrygps alone, without further mod. This will plscr a shortcut on your desktop. If gps is enabled and you click it, then it will launch AngryGPS, else it will take you to settings menu before it launches.
