Hi,
I just flashed the LANIGHT v4.2 DATADATA ROM from the Captivate Android development thread, and everything is working great, but I can't figure out how to work Google Now. I did a search on the thread and it said the search button is mapped to Google Now, but when I press the search button, nothing happens. No search or Google now or anything pops up.
I hope I'm posting this in the right section. If anybody can help me out that would be great. Thank you very much.
I'm using slimbean 2.4 and the button mapping has been changed to holding the menu button. Try that and see if that works.

Hey thanks for the reply, but it seems it still doesn't work. I'm not sure if the LANIGHT version uses that mapping. Is there supposed to be an app called Google Now if I go into the settings and apps menu? My ROM seems pretty basic, I don't even have any sounds to choose from.
Do you have Google Search installed? I don't think that it is included in the rom. If not head over to the play store and download it. Let me know if that helped?

No, I don't have Google Search installed. I was wondering why there was no search bar in my Home screen. I hope this will work, I'll try it now, thanks for the advice!

Forgive me as I'm sure this has been asked.
I've run search on XDA app as well as googled, and looked everywhere in settings.
My short press search button no longer brings up search function from the home screen. Haptic tells me it's reading fine. Long press to voice search is still good. Short press search in other apps is good too.
Also, MENU | SEARCH is dead too, in home screen.
Running CM nightly 233 & ADW.
Kind of lost. Pointer much appreciated.

I'm guessing you've confirmed Google Search app is installed?

Just verified, yup, and runs no problem. Just independent of the button.

I'm guessing you're using CM? And had to delete the GoogleSearch apk and reinstall it from Market to upgrade? Your search is on /data. You need it on /system for the key to work. Get root explorer, or use terminal if you understand basic cd, ls, cp, and mv. Look in /data/app and find the apk for search, rename it to QuickSearchBox.apk, and push it to /system/app. Then reboot, and it should work.
Edit: I can't remember, it might be GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. I think it's what I said the first time, but if that doesn't work, try it with Google in front of it and reboot again. My N1 is currently backing up in recovery or I'd check.
That's it, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. Thanks much.

For those people that enjoy the use of the Genius button and Dragon Dictation.
This is the Genius button app that came stock with Espresso Froyo put into a flashable zip. It was taken from the Espresso Sense Rom and has been confirmed working on CM7. I have also included the app called Button Shortcut (free on market) in the zip to make things easier. It can be used to open any app using the Genius Button / longpress search button. The Genius app should also work on HTC Froyo Roms too. Much thanks to the CM team for making CM7 compatable with these apps.
This needs to be flashed/installed from ClockworkMod Recovery. Install it just
like you would flash a rom. You should not need to wipe anything first.
Please hit the "Thanks" button if you like this.

Yes it actually works very well. There is a setting so it doesn't have to verify your contacts now. You can get to it by pressing the button and when it asks you to speak you can hit the menu button.
I'll give it a whirl since vlingo hasnt been working for me on cm7

Works like a charm.
EDIT: LOVING being able to put the genius app on the genius button again. Stuck Navigation onto my camera longpress . MANY thanks for this!
not nearly as fast as vlingo, but has gotten way faster from the 2.1 version. thx bud
A couple of hours after flashing this I begin to have problems with my market and maps. I restored my backup and it works fine. I have tried this on several builds and have the same problem. I use the same builds without it and everything works great. Anyone else having a problem with it? Hope I can get it to work. I want the genius button back. Thanks for posting this.

What kind of problems are you having? I haven't had any issues at all. This should have absolutely no effect on your market. What type of wipe have you done? The slide isn't my primary but I going to sim it up and run it for a bit see if I can help.
I wouldn't think it would cause a problem either. It's the only change I made though. I do a full wipe between each build I try. I have tried on build 19, 21, 23, all with full wipe. On build 19 my market wouldn't download anything. My maps also started force closing. I cleared data and flashed gapps again. Still didn't work. I restored backup and it was fine. On build 21 and 23 my maps worked but my market would not open. It would start to open but close itself again. It doesn't happen right away. It starts several hours later. I have tried each build without and no problems. I do appreciate you posting this though cause at least I can try to get it working. Thanks for trying to figure it out.

Private message me. I have a few things for you to try.
This setup gives me absolutely no problems on my CM-6.1.1, Though there have been problems with the market on CM-7 builds 19 - 23 and I haven't tested this on CM7 due to the variation of people having infrequent problems lately.
One thing I have done though was removed the 'flashable' aspect of it and simply added it to the main ROM being sure to include the /lib folder as well. Works great!
Works on CM 6.1.1
Had to download button shortcut from market. But after I did that and configured it-all is well. And yes it's a bit faster than it was on stock 2.1.

Can you get the driving mode to work as on the stock ROM? I flashed it twice and ran fix permissions but when i say driving mode on it responds with hand free is on, but no icon on status bar and wont announce caller or announce theres a new text. Voice dialing, composing text and web search work though. I was just hoping for the driving mode to work.
This is awesome!
I got my search button and a working Genius Button at the same time on my favorite rom (3rdSense)....sweet!!!!
I just installed CM7 on two NC's. I am seeing something strange in the Android App store. Some of the more common apps that I have used in the past like Astro, Facebook and others do not have a download button (or any button for that matter).
If someone can explain why and what I can do to resove this problem that would be great. A side note the NC's are using two diffrent gmail accounts.
Same and I'm using one gmail account. Also it looks like I've had a kinda old version of Facebook installed for a while (1.6.1) without marker stating there was a .2 or a .3 release. I uninstalled the app and that is how I found out about there being no download button. So it might of been a problem with some of the last nightlies as well

It's a problem with new market. Try uninstalling updates in the settings for the market.

I think it is because the new market is device sensitive, our devices show up as B&N nook colors, the market thinks we are running crippled e-readers and doesn't let us download all the cool ****.
Do what koopakid08, go to your application settings > manage applications, find the market and "uninstall updates"
New market looked crap anyway.

What I did was rename MarketUpdater.apk to MarketUpdater.apk.bak by using linux on the sdcard that I'm booting cm7 off of. Not sure how to do it if you're running cm7 on the emmc.
With the help of a friend I found what I had to do so I am able to edit apps if CM7 is loaded on the emmc. I found this extremely useful so I will link the wiki that fixed my issue.

What did you fix? How?
I updated and also have no Download button. The panel that button should be on flashes white. When I uninstall updates, my old market comes back, but after I leave the market, the new one returns, with the download button. After I leave that market and return, functionality falls apart. The main page doesn't open correctly, Download button disappears, and frames become shaky. What's the deal???

LOL! But don't think I'm your new Market, to laugh at you: I'm one of the sufferers with not only download buttons being eaten by Green Dude, but also icons for previously downloaded apps missing. Mine are all free apps, but I can't imagine how people with disappearing paid apps could get refunds now.
Anyone to share his/her experiences with the best/fullest alternative apps marts? Thank you.

settings
programs
manage applications
all
market
turned off compatibility mode.
Wow. I was with you to the last step. Couldn't find "compatibility mode" in the old market or in the new.

I simply downloaded super manager from the market then renamed market updater..
1. Open super manager
2. Enable root function option
3. Use built in file explorer in super manger to find market updater.apk.(should be in system apps...)
4. Rename. I simply renamed (.bin instead of apk...)
This will preventing market from updating...
Hope this helps all....

Searched, seems that feature is available on MIUI only. No lucky with stock CM7.
Hi I've tried searching but no answer found, although others have asked. Using Latest MacKay KK 4.1.1 and I am unable to use google now via swype from left. Voice search works. I think the issue is related to an issue I had on a 4.3 Rom where I had to uninstall updates from Google Search and then update via app but unable to do that on KK.
Any solutions?
you must log in in search settings with your Google Account.
then you can activate Google now with swype from left
this works only in the google launcher
As far as I can see I'm logged in. I'm using gel launcher but of I try to open the search app I get a network error. When I had this on 4.3 ROMs I could delete updated from search open search and then update. I'll check settings again and thanks for the reply

It seems very hit and miss, some N5 users have the issue some don't it looks to be related to Google account settings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dumz1opCfuE&feature=youtu.be Try this ROM. Google Now runs fine.
Found a fix of sorts; set up a new Google account on my phone in addition to my normal account and signed in to Google now using that. I read somewhere that there may be a problem with certain Google accounts causing this

Is there a way to turn off the google search bar that pops up when you press the home button. Ever since the OTA update this has happened and it's really annoying. I prefer the home button bringing you back to the home screen every time. Is there any way to do this?

I have tried everything I know to try to fix it cleared app caches - factory reset - nothing. I know of five gs5 users affected by this - it seems to have happened the week following the 4.4.4 update.
I hate it
I, too, am having this same issue. I can't stand it!! I've tried everything I can think of and nothing fixes it. And, like you, it's been happening since this latest update. They need to fix it or provide us with a way to do it. I was about to reset my phone to factory settings when I saw this thread, and it looks like that won't help either.
I have read on a another website that restarting the device fixes it temporarily - but I have not seen this. Reached out to ATT on twitter, but haven't received any helpful response.
Restarting fixes it for me for a day or so.

Did an update on my google apps and it fixed it temporarily. Now it's back to sucking again...
When hold the button on 4.4.2, greenify comes up as an option, as well as do nothing. hitting this disables the function entirely. I'm not sure if this is an option on 4.4.4, and maybe it's because I have the donate version of greenify.
Edit:Saw on another thread there is an option in the system menu of Wanam to disable the long press entirely and mine is turned off
I think I found the fix. Go to App Manager>All, find Google Search and uninstall updates. Reboot your phone. It worked on my phone. I thinks the latest Google search update is the culprit. Also disable auto update in google play.

This is compete crap. That update screwed a few things up. Most annoying is this search problem. I tried the above suggestion, but I don't have anything in my app list titled "Google search". Not sure what the deal is. Any suggestions?
S5 on ATT 4.4.4
Edit...Uninstalled the update for the actual Google app and it might have fixed it. The restart was mandatory as it was still acting up even after removing the update.
