Firstly, this should be in the Q&A section as you're asking a question. (Obvious?)
Secondly, to get to download mode, power off the phone completely, hold both volume keys, and insert the usb cable into the phone. If you get a triangular yellow icon with the Android guy holding a shovel, you are in download mode.
make sure odin is opened up before you connect

It is not rooted. You only have 2.2. To root search XDA for SuperOneClick

So i am a complete idiot and just bricked a phone yesterday and luckily managed to get it exchanged at att.
The new one is having tons of trouble getting into download mode using the button combinations. I wanted to load the I9000 euro roms as I had successfully done to my previous phone. I did the first step in loading the csc and pda files and accidently forgot to uncheck autoreboot. Anyways... I pulled the battery out before it could reboot. I still couldnt get it into download mode so I booted into the android without applying the second step of the pit fil and the modem file. I am not used to using the sdk so was planning to root and intall a terminal program to "su reboot download"... I tried using the oneclick root to complete the job and it rebooted me into recovery, but apparently since i didnt flash the pit file, my power button doesnt work to access the menu..(volume rocker does).
Now it wont boot into anything except into recovery and I cant do anything about in it.... i have tried everything on oneclick odin instructions and can not get there... is there anything i can do from the sdk to get into download mode... it kind of appears that my phone is recognized when i plug it in cuz windows beeps saying that it recognizes the device...
HELP ME PLEASEEEEE
I THINK I DESPERATELY NEED TO GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE SOMEHOW!!!
I HAVE TRIED EVERY WAY LISTED ON

Wrong forum, but how in the world did you "brick" your last phone? These phones from what lots of smart people say are not brickable, and these guys on here have tried. And if you did in fact brick your old phone why would you decide to put another ROM on?
First calm down. If it boots you are ok.
You can do what Akachay said. Or pull the battery unplug the usb. Start odin put the battery back in hold down both volume keys then plug in the usb cable it should boot into download mode.
It is very hard to brick this phone

Do this. The phone has to be off. Hold both volume buttons and plug in the usb. It will into dl mode. No power button necessary.

I second this method. Calm down and take your time. It WILL work trust me ive used it a few times on both my captivate and vibrant.

I third that the volume button method.... I pull the battery, reinstall it, plug in usb, hold down volume buttons. Works every time. Any other method is a total crap shoot.
If using Odin make sure its open before you do this so that it will recognize the connection.
If you can talk to the phone with adb you can also try "adb reboot download".
Good luck.

Why do people say its impossible to completely brick the phone? Unfortunately I did it due to stupidity, and it bricked quite easily.

People say that because the word "brick" is thrown around quite liberally. These phones have been nearly impossible to legitimately brick. About the only way I can think of is spontaneous hardware failure
OP, I thought I bricked it yesterday but d/l method works, don't worry...
moving my own issue here as i think i really HAVE bricked the phone. did alot of reading but apparently still did it wrong. flashed the PIT file only to the phone and now ive got a lovely and not very heavy paperweight. does not even turn on using the power or volume combo even after i pulled the battery for 5 minutes. Any clues? im pretty sad about this.. read that its pretty hard to brick these phones but im not so sure that is the case
ill also mention i was being dumb and didnt realize i was on the i9000 page reading instructions at the time. i was using the instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765032 and the problem occured after i flashed the pit successfully and then was resetting the battery when i found out it was completly dead

Seems lately over on the odin3 page alot of people are doing dumb things just like me. looks like ill be able to return it in the next few days but i just want to stress that while people are stating its really hard to brick these phones i would NOT recommend doing any kind of firm flashes unless you are totally comfortable with exact instructions or turning your phone into a complete brick and getting a warranty exchange. I hate to say it but im a little unsure of myself on these firmware upgrades now. its not really a click-and-be-done process yet so i think ill just hold out and hope the froyo upgrade fixes the gps issue because otherwise i still love this phone
Hi all,
A question for you smarter people, Can we somehow use the Captivate rom in our machines? I'm thinking we need to mod somethings here and there but is it a good idea?
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797374
Edit: Yes I think this should be in Q&A but I would like the question in Devs as it will give the modders/hackers/devs a heads up on the release of the rom
Edit Edit: Don't install this! Breaks ****
Yes, I would like to know if we can use this on our SGS.
Should be that we need to flash a 2.2 i9000 kernel for proper hardware support.

You might want to try a JPK modem with it too as I have feeling that it would work. Maybe if we extract the PDA file from the archive we can use odin to do it.

I don't know, you're the guy called "ronalGPS"
Kidding, kidding. Install GPS Test (if you're wifi is working). See how many satellites you can lock-in indoors and outdoors and how long it takes. But if you haven't done it before with the stock roms, not really sure if you would be able to assess comparatively.
What exactly is wrong with your phone, btw? What happens if you try download mode (VolumeDown + Power + home)?

Hi
I tried to upgrade my phone, I9000s, from 2.3 to 2.4 this afternoon via Odin and it has gone wrong and I think I have bricked the phone.
I cannot get into download mode now, I could before after bricking, but not now, and all I get is the phone and computer symbols.
Can anybody advise me what I do next.

If you tried to go from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 and you got screwed bootloaders, you might need to take your phone to service. But try reading this guide first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134975. Hope you get your phone up&running again

u mean from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. so the mistake is
when u turmed ur phone to download mode and connect to pc . Odin didnt regonized ur phone and u press start ? as many ppl want flash fast .
so try this
1st : Move ur battery out . plug ur phone to recharge w/o battery if ur screen turn on . then press vol down+home+power . if not do the same with battery .
if those doesnt work check the :
2nd : remove battery . open Kies to ur PC plug ur phone with USB cable to connect with ur pc , w8 some mins to regonize ur phone if ur screen trying to get on plug the battery to ur phone to recharge via pc then try to get download mode . if nothing of those doesnt work for u then u must
3rd Buy USB JIG from ebay or get ur phone to service (if u had rooted phone u will pay)
It happened to me before...
The only solution was buying a jig on ebay to unbrick the phone.
Before that i sent my phone to repairs and it was solved.
Good luck

The little compute symbol with the arrows is a version of download mode. It is the emergency flash mode and odin should still recognize it and u should be able to flash a full firmware that had bootloaders

its really rare to screwed ur main bootloader on the SGS.. maybe you could buy the jig but i`ve never tried the jig but maybe you could try to take out your battery and wait a couple of minutes.. maybe half hour to be safe, before you try to switch on your phone.. but after you place back the battery make sure you doesnt touch any button except the 3 button combo for download mode.. i`m not sure why but that has been the case for me when i got screwed during flashing new rom when i push other button such as the home button before the 3 button combo the phone just didnt respond..

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, sorry I have not been back on.
Not sure how I managed it, but I got back to the point of the yellow download symbol again and flashed the stock 2.3 Gingerbread I had on file.
All is now working again but it is showing as 2.3.4.
Something has obviously got mixed up though, as I am in the UK and now have Swisscom on start up and close down.
It all appears to be working ok and after a while I managed to root it again.
I suppose I should really looking in to flashing it again so I don't have the Swisscom coming up, but I will leave it as it is until I feel a little more brave after my near miss.
Thanks again.

Hi
Could somebody point me to the correct version of 2.3.4 for the UK for me to flash.
I have had another look at Samfirmwares but I am still unsure of the correct version for the UK.
Also, on checking my phone, it is marked as CSC unkown, it that something I need to worry about.
Thanks

HELP HELP HELP -- I recently plugged my phone into my com to transfer music. samsung kies then started up and told me i needed a firmware upgrade. I proceeded to upgrade and mid upgrade i received an on screen message that my device wasn't recognised and the upgrade was auto cancelled. I now have a message with bright yellow/green trianle that says "do not turn off target". I have reinstalled kies - no luck. knocked phone on and off -no luck. i'm at a loss with what to do with the phone now !! phone not even being recognised by com or kies. Can anyone help please??? many many thanks in advance... thanks. ian.
Seems that you're new to that, so let me explain: if you see the yellow triangle with the android, you're in download mode. Normally, you access it by pressing power+home+vol down buttons while screen is off. As long as you can access download mode, your device isn't bricked. Now that you can't access anything else than download mode, you have to flash a new firmware with Odin. I recommend you to search for the JW4 firmware here in general section. There you should find help on how to flash it(best is Faryaab's thread).
maybe you can try and do a hard reset and flash a ROM from yr SD card..reboot in recoverymode..if the phone does not reboot..try and run the rooting program, might work. But most likely you'll have to reinstall the firmware...

I don't really think that he rooted his phone ever before, so I don't think that he needs root now... but if he wants to try it out, CF-root or DoOMlords rooting kit are the right choises.
